Great performance from their European tour in 1992. Sax: Michael Brecker Trumpet: Randy Brecker Keys: George Whitty Guitar: Mike Stern Bass: James Genus Drums: Dennis Chambers
This is how all jazz should be filmed. With these random cuts to super high contrast, black and white, shots. And all jazzists should dress like Mikey here.
Jonathan Aviles I get that Coltrane has that legacy but I truly believe that Brecker took Coltrane’s technique and just somehow made it even better man.
The recorder player is Benoit Sauve, I am a recorder player myself so I have watched that clip many times. Note that Benoit has his right hand on top, normaly you have the left hand there. If you think the clip has been reversed, I can tell you its not, he is playing that way. This also means that his recorder/s has been changed, for example placing the finger holes in a different way and also the way you drill and shape the holes. It is quite complicated to manufacture a high quality recorder. If you want to listen to maybe the best recorder player today, search "Kristine West recorder - Full Movie". This swedish girl is an outstanding musician, listen f e to the first piece by Vivaldi. The recording was made in Vätö church, Sweden. Enjoy!
I saw Michael Brecker at a jazz club in Uppsala, Sweden, in the mid-90s. On the last song he impressed by putting away the saxophone and sitting behind the drum set. Regular drummer hit with a trumpet and played amazing trumpet solo and Michael Brecker played amazingly well on the drums. I'll never forget this.
Fantastic. Randy Brecker did a master class at my high school in 2005 and I got the chance to play this song with him. He was amazing to work with. It's pretty sad, Michael got sick shortly after we worked Randy, and Randy broke contact with our band leader at that time. RIP Michael
Of all of Micheal’s solo in Skunk Funk, this solo was the best version. This is the ultimate solo to learn for any jazz musician especially for a tenor sax player.
What people gotta realize is that improvisation is like justice (well suppose to be) , BLIND. If you play blues, latin, funk, rock, swing, whatever.. you can improvise over it...Jazz has found it's play in almost all music forms. You don't gotta like what your listening to. Just respect it cause thousands of jazz musicians died so Michael brecker and you and I can learn there really isn't any boundries in music. especially jazz. Brecker is one of the few guys in his time that did it WELL in all!
Hey, ALL of these players are monsters, truly, there isnt even the remotest weak link on stage, but Chambers freaks me out, damn! Guys like that block many from ever playing, simply for the reason, they know they'll never get close.
Some of the best drummers in the world have played this tune with the Brecker Brothers. But none of them can touch Dennis Chambers. I hope he is in good health.
His technical ability I feel is still unmatched to this day. Look at his ability to switch from normal notes to those that are harmonic or altissimo notes. Never ceases to amaze me
What a genial piece of music!! It's got everything, the funky groovy hook, mind-blowing jazz improvisations, enough complexity but also great melodies, all performed flawlessly by skillful technicians. Top5 track to bring to a desert island in my book.
Wow I didn't expect to find this. Summer of 1992, I was there, in the audience recording the set to my portable Sony DAT machine. Michel Camilo also played that night with Dave Weckl and Anthony Jackson. - an evening to remember......
RIP Mike Brecker. Even though I've played tenor myself since 1973, your stunning virtuosity never ceases to amaze me. Thank you for everything you' did for the saxophone, for music, and for humanity.
Michael Brecker takes that horn to places it's never visited before.....and us along with it.....RIP Michael , bet you"re raising some musical hell in heaven !
one of the things i love about the breaker Brothers band is the rhythm section is always on point. the Bass player and the guy on drum set were ridiculously tight. Its amazing i love it!!
randy came to a town near me and played with my schools jazz band as well as like 5 other schools from the area. one of the greatest moments of my life.
Something cool: I thought at times James Genus was playing slap, but it looked he wasn't doing it except after the start of Randy's solo, but then I realized that the bass drum and the bass had a hit at the same time, so that made it sound like slap.
have you seen the solo he does in the 1993 version of this song? Its so incredibly fast and awesome that I couldnt believe what I was watching. Just type in "Brecker Brothers- Skunk Funk 93"
this song works like this: listen a couple minutes then open new tab window from browser and start to play this song again from the beginning (or random point). On top of each other...yeah xD
31 years ago, I watched the Michael Brecker Band in Tokyo (with Mike Stern, Kenny Kirkland, Jeff Andrews and Omar Hakim). I split a cab back to the hotel with Michael. It was my first trip to Japan and I was really jet lagged. On the way back, we discussed this tune.
Definitely how you should lean into a solo break. So many players leave it open. You gotta carry the energy and intensity from the rhythm section, or create it yourself.
This was my wedding song. It always makes me cry.
Rob Carter you sir have huge balls to play this at a wedding. Major kudos
Good choice. I bet your wife cries a log (for different reasons). Anyways, I'm on your side :)
bruh momentum didn’t know he married your mom
@bruh momentum i laughed ouut fuckin loud bbvahaha
check out romanian saxophone music, they play crazy stuff and it’s all double tongued, but they usually play at weddings. 😂
Steve Jobs is killing it on sax!!
Josh Smout lol
Ha
Funny, I thought was Steven Segal
Wait wuuuuut
Josh Smout Haha this made me laugh
Playing this song should be considered a sport.
Playing jazz is a sport*
no doubt, unbelievable,
Lol
Watching it certainly is, I just lost 5 pounds...
This is hard-jazz-rock! or hard-fusion if you like.
This is how all jazz should be filmed. With these random cuts to super high contrast, black and white, shots. And all jazzists should dress like Mikey here.
the Chick Corea Elektric Band music videos from the early 90's tick all of those points haha...

" I have a weakness for horns like the Brecker Brothers ..."
Who said that?
Ridiculous bass playing
I transcribed it it's on my channel :D Took me a whole month!
Best solo ever. There's no argument . Michael is the most technically sound tenor player that ever lived.
Lester?
Alexander Johns he's close but brecker is king
Chris potter can't play blues though. brecker is the package
estouffl stouffl If Chris Potter can't play blues then I may as well throw my Alto out the window! Haha

My god, that section of the solo that starts at 2:36 is absolutely INSANE!!! It makes my head explode....in a good way.
Randy - "Just stop the song after his solo..."
We all know what head Michael makes explode😂❤❤ 🎷

Right to the flat 5 but then a great line after that chord their playing on is tough
The bass is thundering the whole

Le jeu de Randy Brecker est tellement clair et propre ! Wahou ! Enorme!

I nearly cried of disappointment when I listenend to brecker solo and then listened to those musician at Eurovison with their fucking child music...

Something cool: I thought at times James Genus was playing slap, but it looked he wasn't doing it except after the start of Randy's solo, but then I realized that the bass drum and the bass had a hit at the same time, so that made it sound like slap.
