DIY: 1997-2004 Dodge Dakota 2WD Wheel Bearing Replacement

- Video tutorial on how to replace the front wheel bearing on a 2 wheel drive 1997 to 2004 Dodge Dakota with a 4.7L V8. When ordering a new wheel bearing, you will also have to order a new locking nut because this particular model uses nylon locking nut which cannot be reused. Other styles use a castellated nut which has a cotter pin to lock it into place rather than using a nylon insert built within the nut. This particular tutorial was done on a 2003 Dodge Dakota 2wd.

Tools/Supplies Needed:
-jack
-jack/axle stand
-large slip joint pliers or c clamp
-14mm socket
-21mm socket
-bungie cord
-hammer
-1-3/8" socket
-ratchet set
-emery paper or an abrasive pad
-degreaser
-rag
-torque wrench
-new spindle lock nut
-new spindle/wheel bearing assembly
Procedure:
-safety raise the vehicle using a jack, support with a jack stand, and remove the wheel
-loosen the master cylinder reservoir so when you depress the pistons in the caliper, it doesn't build up an access pressure in the system
-remove the two 14mm bolts from the caliper, then depress the pistons while the caliper is in place using a large pair of slip joint pliers or a c-clamp
-once you've removed the caliper, tie it into place with a bungie cord so there isn't any strain on the brake line
-next remove the caliper carrier which is held on by two 21mm bolts on the backside
-once the carrier is removed, remove the rotor next
-if the rotor is stuck on, you can hit the rotor with a hammer in between the lugs to rattle it loose
-now you can remove the hub using a 1-3/8" socket
-if the hub is slightly stuck on, you can tap the rear with a hammer considering you'll be replacing the bearing and it doesn't matter about the old bearings
-you can also use a puller if you wish
-clean the spindle shaft of any rust or grim in order for the new one to fit
-use emery paper or an abrasive pad to clean up the spindle shaft, then wipe clean with a degreaser and rag
-the new hub assembly is a sliding fit setup
-once the hub is in place, you can now install the new locking nylon locking nut (torque spec is 185ft lbs or 251nm)
-caliper slide pin torque specs are 22 ft lbs or 30nm
-assembly in reverse of disassembly

This is the very best video on TH-cam for my 2001 Durango SLT PLUS. I almost gave my mechanic $400. I paid $170 for two hubs/bearing, $20 for a few tools, and two hours later, smooth, quiet cruising. Thanks again.

That's awesome, but if your mechanic was only charging 400 for both bearings he's either a crackhead or just 1 of the very few great mechanics still left.

I removed the Caliper and nothing else; bungee'd it up & out of the way, and then gave the spindle a few very sharp hits dead center with a good heavy sledge. The self-tightening nut was really on there and I had to stand on the wrench with everything I had (all 270lbs)! But she came off with a sharp jolt. Reassembly was easy enough; nice system (I like not getting my hands in packing grease). Thanks -this video answered a lot of Q's

I have done dozens of wheel bearings over the years and I agree with everything this guy has done. The hub nut is actually a 36mm and can be rented/returned at your local Oriellys or Autozone. And use a 3 jaw puller. A lot less hassle then a hammer.but again. A great video.

The axle nut is actually a 35mm. Just did mine this week.

Possible it could be. Depending of the circumstances, you can jack the vehicle up and give the wheel a spin and you should be able to hear or feel the grinding. Other times because there is the full weight of the vehicle on the spindle, that's when the noise shows up. You can't repack these types of bearings with grease either.

Is there a speed sensor thing? My 03 Dakota cruise light will lite but won't hold speed. Its suggested it may be wheel bearing sensor...

Have you tried any other auto parts retailers such as NAPA or Autozone? But you can also buy them online too, such as Rock Auto or Ebay if you don't mind buying it online.

No grease needed to put the new hub on. After you've cleaned up the shaft, it should be a perfect sliding fit.

Do you mean with the new bearing??? The new bearing actually doesn't really have much free wheel spin because it is freshly packed with grease, therefore is does cause a certain amount of drag compared to the worn out bearing with no/minimal grease.

Amazon has great prices and replace both. I only say Amazon, because I recently did this on my 2003 Dodge Dakota 2wd and bought raybestos brand front hub assembly for both sides regular retail was 80-160 each and I paid 37.16 with free shipping and a 9.84 rebate for buying two. They are very high quality and arrived quickly. Autozone was 85.99 each and all of the other autopart specialty locations are atound the same.
That's a flawless looking hub. Q: When reinstalling the hub, do you need to put grease back on the spindle?
How much free spin should be in the actual hub once its off the ground . Should there be any noise when turning it?

Remove the caliper bracket and caliper in one piece. It's way easier
Does a brand new hub need to be greased before installing.
My brake caliper bolts were actually 7mm Allen head bolts

Anybody know what transmission is in a 97 dodge Dakota v8 magnum automatic ? I've already wasted a couple hundred dollars buying a trans out of a 96 ram 1500 but the bell housing didnt line up
i havent done mine yet but isnt it easier to leave the brake assembly on to break the spindle nut loose so someone can hold the brake so it dont spin im not sure just other vehicles i have realized its much easier
The nut is always stationary, it's part of the spindle. Unless you were working on a 4wd, then it rotates.
Hi I have n 03 Durango basic model no 4x4, the gets no cutter pin or nothing fancy just hub n retaining nut,
The bearing where shot ni was able to remove the nut with no force n don't know the torque to reinstall cause 185lbs seems like it would destroy the bearings can u help.
185lbs is the torque specs required for the locking nut which holds on the spindle. It is a very large diameter threaded stud, so it will handle that type of torque. Just standard lug nuts are rated for 100lbs on average.
Is it absolutely necessary to buy a new spindle nut too, or can I make do with the factory one?
The recommended method is buying a new spindle nut too, they are technically a one time use part.
I have a1997 Dodge DAKOTA SPORT im experiencing wheel bearing noise im not shure which side its coming from if I turn the steering wheel to the left it seems too get louder it houls like a banchie but when I turn the wheel to the right quieter is it the right side that's bad ?

Did this truck have all wheel ABS? my truck is a 00 dakota and i guess it has all wheel abs, and my hubs look like they have a gear looking back side, not smooth like the one in the vid and I am rear wheel drive, not 4X4.
+Eslamizar Only rear wheel ABS if I remember correctly and this was 2wd as well. Yeah the gear shaped portion on the backside of the hub is for the ABS sensor.

Can anyone tell me the part number or add a link for the replacement hub? Most of what I find are for 4wd.
Was told by my parts guy that there can be as many as 8 different hubs for Dakotas depending on 2 wd/4 wd and ABS configurations to name a few variables . The first time I bought these the parts guy went out, we clocked the wheels over and he got down and did a visual to select the right one. Thank you Eric of Merle's Auto Supply in Green Valley, AZ.
go to rockauto.com! They are the least expensive at $23.??. Don't forget to order new spindle nuts for $8.??. Making each wheel bearing hub under $33 (with new spindle nut). Shipping was under $10 when I ordered mine(ordered early Monday and had them late Friday). They have 2wd rwd wheel bearing hub assemblies and 4wd as well.
I'm looking all over and no help yet, maybe I can get lucky here. I have the new assembly all ready to go but the spindle on my truck is pretty tore up so what do I do? The threads look like they would just eat up my new bearing assembly nut so I don't want to install it until such time as I can be sure it will be ok. I don't know how to post a photo with this so I just have to hope my explanation is sufficient. Thanks.
my profile photo shows what I'm looking to find out about. It looks to be one piece with the surrounding unit, and I don't know what to ask for at the Junk yard or even order new online. It's going to take a bit to replace I can see that but WHAT THE HELL IS IT?
By the looks of that photos, it looks like the threads are stripped. If you want you can upload a higher quality photo on my 4DIYers Facebook page. I have the link posted on my channel.
You might be able to clean the threads up if they are not too bad with a die nut. If it's too far gone, you'll need to get a new spindle. The spindle isn't too bad to remove, should only be an hour job. You will need a tuning fork to remove the upper and lower ball joints and the tie rod.

does the hub nut have to be replaced cause the auto parts store told me no?
It is a nyloc nut and the nature of it's usage, yes it does need to be replaced.
It’s so much easier if you remove the rotor with the caliper still attached. No need to remove the caliper.
The rotor isn't attached to the caliper. You cannot removed the rotor without removing the carrier first.
So the wheel bearing is in the wheel hub Assembly
Great video of how to replace a hub assembly, but not how to replace the bearings on a hub like the video said..
From my understanding you have to buy the hub assembly as a whole you can't just replace the bearings.
Be careful other video's give the size of the center nut as 32mm but its 1 3/8 size like explained in this video

You don't, they're basically a sealed unit from factory with grease already. The only wheel bearings requiring grease to be added is a tapered roller bearing.
How do you keep the bearings greased???
They're pre-greased from new, they're not serviceable like the tapered style.

You should be able to. You'll just need the same amount of distance between the backside of the hub and spindle as the total stud length.

The nut does have to be removed in order to take the hub off.
4DIYers You left out some little details on the video that you understand but others my not. Like is there a race behind the hub that needs removed or do you have to re-install the new bearings in the new hub.
There isn't a race behind the hub that needs to be removed and the bearing is a whole assembly with the hub. Once you purchase a new hub, it already comes preinstalled with a new bearing.
i can't get the nut off my 98 dakota... i seems to be on there pretty good
A large johnson bar or an impact gun should able to help with that. Make sure you are also turning it in the right direction as well.

Depends which side you are replacing. Left side of the vehicle is left hand thread and the right side is right hand thread sitting from the driver's seat. If you are using metric, then 35mm is the correct size.
35mm is a perfect, very tight fit.

I want to see you get the hub off with the nut still on the spindle.
You arent replacing the bearings you are simply swapping out hubs.
The hub and bearing are a one piece assembly. At the time the video was made and I'm assuming it's still the same, you cannot get just the bearing.
@@4DIYers Yeah in the back of the hub there's a C clip If you remove that clip you can press those bearings out and there're a lot cheaper to buy just a bearing Because the hub never actually gets any WEAR

Title is misleading, you changed the whole hub instead of just the bearing
You can't buy a bearing, it comes in a one piece assembly. Many vehicles have a similar design.
