      I've done a lot of work up around the Chinle area....cell signal is poor to non-existent in most of that area outside of the town or a few miles one way or the other of the highway, and often it's not even that great in the town. Depending on the timeline between them getting out and Matt arriving, it's entirely likely that one or both spent most of that time outside of cell range.

      @@ericnoney3770 Cell service is not the point courtesy is the point, honour, care and respect. If they didn't have cell service there it's likely they could drive to top of hill and send a 1 minute text message when they got out. It looked like they cut and ran and didn't give two hoots about their rescuer. They need to pay for the call out regardless. I would get a $300 call out fee or whatever 2x 5hrs labour plus road miles after hours is worth, paid in advance just in case this happens, if they don't like that I'd say OK get yourself out then.

    I had one of these third gen tacomas. They have a huge design flaw, in that if you tilt the truck up more than a certain amount of degrees, all the oil will drain to a particular spot in the oil pan and leave the engine running dry. Huge flaw for a truck that’s supposed to conquer rough terrain. Get a 4runner or wrangler instead.
    You can TH-cam it or google it. There’s videos on it happening. It’ll first start bellowing smoke out the exhaust and then the engine will seize.

    Depending on the angle he was trying to climb that tacoma. He might have starved it of oil. Apparently on some of the new D4S V6's in these third gens dont have an oil return in the back. So if the approach angle is too extreme it pools in the back top of the motor. There's some talk of this on some tacoma forums.

    These trucks have an issue with steep angle inclines where the sump can run dry as there are no/insufficient baffles in the oil pan and will cause oil starvation issues along with oil to be sucked into the intake and burned causing smoke out the rear. The smoke and the "low oil" indicator are signs you should rethink whatever you're trying in this truck. Some have tried to modify the pickup to be lower and/or added baffles but factory this truck is not great with being on really steep inclines for long periods of time.

Garbage in the fact that it is nearly impossible to get the steel lower pan to the aluminum upper..

    • @JoeJ-8282
      @JoeJ-8282 2 ปีที่แล้ว +5

      Agreed. And it's a very unfortunate design flaw in that new generation of Tacomas. I remember watching more than one video here on TH-cam, including one where I think it was either the "TFL Truck" TH-cam channel or the "Sarah-n-Tuned" channel, (maybe both), where they were testing one of those new Tacos in totally stock form on a trail, and the "Low Oil Pressure" warning light kept coming on every time they would try to climb a hill, even though on totally level ground the oil dipstick was saying that the engine was full of oil, at least at the "proper" full level...
      So it's really a rather bad design in those new engines' oil sump if it does not allow for the oil pump to pump enough oil through the engine when the truck is on a steep hill, because MANY people use those trucks for off-roading, including even rock crawling, especially when they're lifted and/or slightly "off road modded", as many of them are!... Toyota REALLY needs to redesign that engine's oil sump and/or pump in order to better handle climbing while on an incline!...
      And I've additionally heard and read that it's not just that, but it's also a bad design where the oil "pools up" at the rear of the engine when on a steep incline, and sometimes in more extreme cases, (like most likely with the truck in this video), the oil then flows into the rear engine cylinder through the intake valves and floods that cylinder with oil, causing a major pressure buildup and therefore severe engine crankcase and/or rod damage... as what it sounded like on the truck here when Matt tried to crank it...
      I really feel sorry for the owner of that very nice looking truck, but it will definitely be a learning experience for him as to what NOT to attempt while off roading in the future!

    • @lewlewis6511
      @lewlewis6511 2 ปีที่แล้ว +2

      On the 120 series Prado (presumably the 150 series is the same, don't know about other Toyotas) with the 3 litre Diesel engine, the sump is a two level affair, there's a small lower sump where the oil pick up sits, unless you turned the truck on its side or upside down any oil at all in the engine will be in that lower sump so feeding the engine continually.
      I had a Hilux with the same engine and that had a different (normal sump), which wouldn't have been so fail safe for extreme angles.
      When Matt checked the engine oil on the Tacoma it was low, only just above the minimum mark.
      Feel sorry for the owner but the oil should be right up to the max for going such places.

    On those steep climbs, keep your oil level at the full mark and watch your oil pressure gauge. If you don't have a gauge, buy one. If the oil gauge goes to low, the climb angle is too steep for the engine and the oil pump is sucking air as all the oil is at the back of the engine. If you ignore this, the engine will grind itself to pieces.

    I honestly don't know how rod knocks are not a daily failure with the offroading at the angles you guys achieve while tasking the motors - and all on a stock oiling system. Depending on the motor and where the sump is, going up or going down some of these obstacles must be running the sump dry, one would think.

      @@CA11100 I wouldn't say low, as Matt said it was above the bottom line. I think oil got into a cylinder and hydrolocked it. That noise isn't a few bearings briefly being out of oil and there wasn't enough oil to completely starve the bearings. I'm assuming the oil in the back of the head was pooled up, it went through the valve seals/guides, and into the rear cylinder.

    • @Texas240
      @Texas240 2 ปีที่แล้ว +1

      Might depend on engine design too. The engine in my car has an oiling problem, but typically people try to solve it by putting in higher flow oil pump. This exacerbates the actual problem which is that there isn't enough drainage in the head to allow the oil to efficiently drain back down to the sump.

    Off-road vehicles take alot more maintenance. Every fluid needs to be changed way more often and checked alot. Otherwise you'll need Matt's number on speed dial.

    Knowing how much a normal tow truck costs, I cannot even manage the expense for some of these difficult off road recoveries.

    • @rsetha01
      @rsetha01 2 ปีที่แล้ว +3

      I sank my tacoma in a mudhole in the middle of a difficult off-road park in Kentucky, I was fucking blessed that there was a local mechanic that got a tractor to pull it out, rebuild my starter, put a new radiator and pump, all for $1800. Almost blew my engine when I sank it, 4hrs away from home, looked up initial prices...almost cried. Called 6 towing companies that all refused to pull me out. I really thought my new truck was going to be a total loss. This guy lived next door to the park and came by to help, he wasn't an official employee of the park, I am so thankful to meet him. It could've easily cost me more than 5 to 10k for someone else to do it.

      @@philiprogers4071 Yup, the Brits are not road trippers. I lived there and drove to Scotland and Wales and our Brit friends thought we were crazy for driving "so far". I mean a trip of a couple hundred miles was a once in a lifetime thing for many of them.

    • @gbgt2

      @@trevors8577 Generally a big road trip from the UK would mean driving over the English channel (not literally) to France. Then from there you can drive to anywhere in Europe. When I was 18 me and some friends drove for 27 hours from the UK to Slovakia. You can do some great Euro road trips covering lots of countries.

    • @GlossaME

      @@LudwigDrummer0013 But keep in mind you rarely find a 10+ miles straight road. So it's very bendy, up and down all over Europe. That's why it's a different story when you do a 400 miles trip over here.

      I would at least require a non refundable deposit via cc over the phone that covers the travel time/expenses. And the person is able to get recovered in the meantime on their own or via other means at least Matts getting paid something.
