Used them on what appeared to be a great car at a reasonable price but discovered more than a few gremlins in its past. I bought my son one of these for his 17th birthday (5 years ago) .... same model, but a 55 plate. He's still got it, and its still going strong. It has needed some maintenance, not surprisingly, and the bodywork is very disappointing (wings and sills on their way out), but I paid £2995 when I bought it (70k miles), and 50k miles later, its still worth £1,500 or so. That is good going, and inside, it still feels tight as a drum.
    It's just a shame VW didn't put as much effort into the bodywork ... but, a great 1st car - not too quick, not too slow, most jobs DIY etc.

I actually bought one for a relative awhile back, was a cheap eBay auction and I fixed it up myself. Plenty of warning lights, needed the obligatory VW coil pack replacement as well as a few other bits. Sometimes I wish I had one of these instead of my 1.8 Honda Civic of the same age, for one simple reason; the ride quality in the mk5 Golf is superb for the type of car it is and sometimes that's all I want in a run around/commuter car.

    If it gets through an MOT wth no advisories, it's clean enough and low enough miles to be worth spenfing a little on. New cambelt and water pump. Be patient and you can probably find a pair of wings in that colour. And a grey and clear rattle can would easily tidy up where the roof bars have been. Then it'd be a good tidy car that could last for years. It's probably ULEZ compliant, and the minor dents wouldn't detract in outer London. A cheap, respectable, and fairly economical family runabout in the making.

    Intriguing options. That rusty set of front wings looked truly sad. Who in their right mind puts water-retaining foam in a wing? Your mate has got a bargain, as far as I can see. As always, your local carwash did a great job and all for 20, when my local would charge 70 for that amount of work.

      MK5 Golf is the worst Golf of all time IMO. The front wheel arches rot from the inside out as they put a stupid piece of foam in there to apparently reduce noise but it actually just acts like a sponge and absorbs water and dirt and rots the unpainted metal until it reaches the other side of the wing. The Headlights have the worst clouding and oxidisation of any car on the market too and even the lower sills at the back rot and in doing so eventually make the car uneconomical to repair. The DSG boxes were notoriously unreliable and the 1.4 turbo had issues too the Diesels were all good but not as good as they were in the MK4. Electronically its also a very iffy car.

  • @aaaaplay
    @aaaaplay ปีที่แล้ว +1

    The thing I like about the Mk5 is that it was the technical blue print for most Volkswagen, Skoda and Seat products going forward at least a decade. It makes retrofits and mods super easy. I'd toss the Pioneer head unit and replace it with a RCG-330g for the modern convenience of CarPlay and Android Auto with a factory look and integration. I'd also chuck a set of used alloys on - but only if it were my personal car and not a flip.

    It's interesting hearing you say cars from Scotland are often rotten. Just over two years ago I bought a 2015 Honda CRV from a dealer in Burton on Trent, show room condition. 4 months in I put new pads on the back just to find the underneath absolutely rotten, checked the service book, it came from Scotland!Thanks to mad used prices and WBAC I just about got my money back after 11 months.

    Another great video, and an old story for you! I bet you can’t wait! In the 80s VW kept the price down, by making unusual things, options. A dealer received a Mars Red, under a year old 5 door Golf, low mileage that would normally fly out the door. But the one person who didn’t spend £145 or so, meant this one wouldn’t shift. So he bought it a new gear knob. With 5 written on it. On the test drive the new owner didn’t get beyond 4th, and never brought it back. Yes….5th gear was an option 😂

    My daughter has one of these mk5 1.6FSI’s, albeit in 54 reg year. Remarkably it’s got no rust at all on the front wings (or anywhere else for that matter) which must be a first, especially since it’s done 147k
    I was expecting the EML to be on on yours as these engines should be run on Super Unleaded but no one ever does and normal unleaded eventually knackers the catalytic converter, my daughters has been on since she got the car at 125k. It’s a bit of a shed, central locking don’t work on the drivers door and the OSR door won’t open most of the time but the engine, gearbox, brakes etc are sweet and it feels solid and safe to drive - I suspect it would go on for many 000’s more miles, especially since the bodywork is not falling away from it.
