This car lived over the road from me from new until 2018. Can confirm it was always garaged and meticulously looked after. I helped to jump start it once when it was on around 9000 miles and my jaw dropped at the condition. The original owner was a very fastidious man. Nice to see it being brought back to the condition it deserves to be in - well done.
The original owner would be turning in his grave to see the condition now (before being cleaned). Interesting to see the steering wheel with NO buttons.
I love seeing old low mileage cars. Others have said exactly what I was thinking, cherished by the original owner then trashed by the people he left it to. I don't know why but it actually upsets me. Anyway it fell into the right hands at the end. Hope it goes to a good home.
New sub here! Picked this car up Saturday and it's a dream. Few comments about rust protection - it's all booked in at local detailer for underseal and ceramic coating. Going to be garaged as well to keep it spotless! Happy happy man, thank you!
It always feels a bit incomplete when you don't say how much it sold for in the end and how long it took to sell, actually my favourite part of these videos is hearing how much interest it got up until it sold.
unreal and 18 years old! just shows if you look after a car.....and own a garage, you can keep a motor like this for many years (including the odd valet) great video mate

My 2.5 Omega TD auto - with 2.5 BMW 525 6-cylinder diesel - was bought new in October 2000 and has done 175,000 miles. Garaged nightly body work has been minimal and the car still pulls like sh*t off a shovel. Why get rid?!
Being a Škoda enthusiast, I have developed an interest in other VAG group products too, the Golf and Polo are particular favourites of mine, perhaps because the underpinnings of the Polo basically make up my Fabia, and the Golf gave life to the lovely Octavia. Anyway this particular one is a beautiful time warp example, it cleaned up really well, and should give years more happy motoring to someone, as always, great video Matt😊.
The way I think about them is an Audi is a VW in a posh suit, a Skoda is the same thing but in overalls, and a SEAT is the same but wearing running shoes. I have had a few VW group cars, 6 x beetles (aircooled), Mk1 and Mk6 Golf, Mk2 Jetta, 4 Passats, and now drive a Skoda Yeti. The Yeti is just a very solidly built car, no pretension, it just works.
Good to see another one saved. My dad once bought a 10 year old Focus with 18,000 miles on it. From the outside it looked like any other old Ford, but inside it was like brand new and being the Titanium model still had a decent level of kit.
Looks like an early '05 model. I owned an early '05 GTI with a few nice features before VW started cost-cutting. The aerial is integrated into the rear window - hence no bee sting on roof. Green tinted windows i/o blue. 3 internal rear lights i/o 2.
It was probably the pride and joy of the old boy and then it all changed when he moved on and it found itself in the hands of the outlaws .... Easy come easy go. PS - 1:40. Skillful bit of droning there :).
Nice find! I bought a new mk5 back in the day and although it handled well I thought the quality was poor compared to my previous Passat and Mk4 Golf. Used car prices seem mad at the moment, more akin to Australia where the climate means old cars don’t deteriorate hence are still worth strong money. Last time I visited my cousin he had on old Astra which would have been a £1000 car here. He’d paid about £8k for it!
Matt well done keeping the original number plates .The car looks great . Should get one of your 4 wheel vehicles out for a snow show experience take care .
Love the originality of a good honest low mileage car! So much life left in it. It’s possible to buy replica dealer plates online to keep the originality, they’re more than you’d pay than your average plates, but worth the price to keep the originality, especially for someone who’s a bit obsessive with originality! 👍
Matt, wow! Great VW, that interior transformation was stunning. This will make someone a great car for another 20 years if, as you always say, they spend the money to properly service it. I’d like to request you buy a first Gen V6 Cayenne and do one of these “keep it on the road videos”. The V6 is far less complicated than the V8 models and should theoretically need a lot less doing to prepare it for sale. Those first gen Cayennes have really aged well, I think the styling looks better today than it did 10 years ago or 20 years ago when introduced. As always, content just keeps getting better and better!
My dad bought a Nissan Micra K10 back in 2002 that was 12 years old with just 18,000 miles on it. It was owned by an elderly lady that had recently passed away. Dad bought it for my brother who had not long passed his test and within a year he put 22,000 miles on it!. He thrashed it and when I drove it, it still felt like new. For a 1.0 litre it was pretty nippy and the heater was awesome. I can see why driving schools used them because the all round visibility was excellent. My dad then took the car back as my brother got an Escort RS turbo phase 1 that he paid a grand for! The Micra met its demise in 2007 when someone crashed into it and bent the B pillar. Cars such as this Golf and the Micra are rare finds indeed. My old Volvo 340 had the same lady owner for 30 years from new and she only put 44,000 miles on it.
My sister bought an 1988 340 from the brother of the local Volvo dealer. When she got a company car, I bought it from her. I LOVED that car. Very comfortable, and surprisingly quick. Well, I had come from a 1.1L Fiesta, so it was quick for me :)
Great, interesting video. Amazing condition, just imagine if that had been JLR product? Good to see a happy ending and the car having, hopefully, a new lease of life with another owner. It really is the best idea to save the planet by keeping older cars going. Well done Matt.
It makes me chuckle when I see comments about your jeans Matt. I remember wearing a pair like that, my girlfriend wanted to stop at one of those out of town retail parks so while she was shopping around I thought I'd go into the Barker and Stonehouse to have a nosey around. The guy on the door looked me up and down, tutted and put his nose in the air. I just turned around. He looked really p'ssed off when we drove past him on the way out. I'd just picked up my 360 the week before 😂
Always a pleasure to watch your reviews, I will shortly be travelling from Kyiv to Prague in a 2005 mk3 mondeo tdci 130 then to Sweden to buy a XC90, then to UK including N Ireland before returning to Kyiv to open a small business, fec Putin 🎉 Your honest down to earth appraisals around the UK are a taste of home
Having owned both a Mark 4 and Mark 5 VW Golf, I also preferred the Mark 4. It felt more like a premium product than the 5 - almost Audi-like in terms of quality. Great video as always.
Reason for the no rot on the arches is due to the diesel versions having foam inside for sound proofing the rattly diesel engines. You will see this with the bora, passsat and golf of the same age all have rust on the arches if they are diesel.
Love this video! I remember driving one when they first came out and this video just summarises it! Just shows you can still get the new car feeling on a budget.
This is right up my alley, owner of a Golf, and a huge fan of the model. Although I must admit, mine is quite a fair bit younger than 18 years old. 😅 Joking aside it’s really nice to see that this car is damn near brand new after 18 years of life. Just goes to show that these cars are built to last so long as you’re willing to take care of them.
A very good car in the snow, strangely even with Conti Eco Contact 3 tyres! I found mine was sensitive to oil changes, you could tell when it had been done. Also timing belt changes, engine felt a lot tighter and better controlled (something to do with the tension?) It liked petrol from Jet, but not Texaco.
Finally Matt you bought a car that isn't a heap of shite! This is a rare find and should serve as a reliable daily for someone for a very long time. I prefer the mark 4 golf as well it doesn't look as boring in my opinion
You give hope to the owners of old cars. I’ve a mk3 14 year old Rav 4 the service records are ridiculous and it runs like a dream. Bought it from an old boy and he clearly loved it I owe it to him to continue looking after it. Getting a service this week and put a good chunk of £ aside to treat it to new springs shocks tyres etc. This is all down to your philosophy of keeping old cars on the road 👍. Ps an old land cruiser video would be good if one crosses your path.
My brother still has a 2007 SEAT Altea as his first car. He got it last year and even tho with 190.000km/118.000miles. Long story short my brother is not the best at maintaining cars he doesn't care BUT if one things true that that I have to say that the 1.6 MPi with 102hp is the best gas engine of the modern VW world quiet, enough torque and definitely reliable. Even tho some consume a little oil you can always add some, fuel economy is not good for an engine this size and power however I think especially compared to the current gas engines sitting at a traffic light these engines are just silent; I love it :)
Lovely example and yes I think a clean car drives better. When I clean mine and take it out that's just what I think. I'm glad it just not me. 🤣 great vid and well done it's come up great
Years ago I bought one like that, 16 or 17 years old very low milage, Immaculate Mk2 Driver not a rust spot on it. Problem was that it had not been driven enough and whilst it was serviced at the correct mileage, in between the coolant corrosion inhibitors had depleted and corrosion had set in, in the cylinder head and it failed not long after I bought it. It did go back on the road kept it for another 5 years or so. Been wary of very low mileage, one lady owner cars, ever since. I am very tempted by this car.
I have the exact same feeling driving a clean/ dirty car. Whenever I wash and clean my car on the weekend I automatically feel like it drives better 😅 it’s instantly quieter inside, drives smoother and feels like you just came out the showroom. I don’t know why, it’s just true. Great video as always, It’s amazing seeing an 18 year old car in such clean, mint condition. So much life left in it.
Lovely low mileage example. Maybe it’s the car trader in me but is the OSR door a slightly different shade? 😬 Not that it matters but I can’t help but notice these things 😅
Well done, hopefully you find the right buyer (someone who will keeps it as it is) I would buy it but the steering wheel is on the wrong side😁 Saludos desde Suecia!🇸🇪
It seems that everything will “buff up” - your excellent videos have inspired me to send my wife off to the spa and detailers for a good buff. I am expecting her to return looking 20 years younger. Worth doing because she is a one owner model and has been garaged for life. Lets see.
Oh oh oh! Talking of Golfs, I bought a 2003 Mk4 Golf GTI last weekend! Two owners, 154k miles, MOT until November. Needs a bit of work but most of it I can do myself. £500! Loving it so far
I had a mark 5 Golf up until last year and sold it to a mate for only a few thousand dollars. The clean absolutely changed it. Yeah I was caught out with old tyres on a previous Toyota. Tread looked fine but they were old and had started to harden up.
It's quite an abrupt sound isn't it that makes you think that something major has happened and when I had a faulty cam sensor that sound would indeed be linked to a warning light coming on (the EPC warning light) so I really don't like to hear it now. It also made that noise when a tyre lost pressure and I had a nail in a tyre. Another reason to fear hearing it then! However they also use the same sound for windscreen washer fluid low and the frost and since getting the sensor fixed that's the only reason it's come on.
Totally agree that a clean car definitely drives better than a dirty one, i don't know why either but they just do. Same as a triangle sandwich tastes better than a square one....
I love these old mint grandad cars. I saw a 2002 Volvo V70 the other day for a grand. 146000 miles. FSH. Always garaged and kept clean. Looked spotless inside and out. Needed a new clutch and the computer needed replacing. I instantly thought you'd be all over it.
This reminds me of when I found a car for my mother online almost 3 years ago. One owner 2011 Toyota Corolla 1.4l petrol with 16,000km on the clock, it was always kept in a garage and done most of its commuting to the shops or going to church. Couldn't believe the condition.
Yes I like the golf ive had two of them in my life they are fairly reliable. Glad you made a reasonable proftit on it as you say you can make a loss on some of your cars . Hope 2024 you make a profit on all your cars Kevin I definitely would recom anyone who is looking for a good car to buy it fro you Kevin
Hi matt, totally agree, I aways think my s type drives and sounds much nicer when it is clean and polished. Also virtually all cars I have driven somehow seem quieter in a light rainshower. Having said all that my s type is the v6 3litre petrol in masons black, light cream leather with only 80k on the clock. I love your presentation and humour but every time you show a car I like the look of I start thinking about a change. Won't happen I love my jaguar but you often put temptation in my way. Take care and thanks for the hours of pleasure I get from watching your videos. 😀
Older people owned cars are the best. I bought a 1995 Audi A6 from a used car dealer who got it from the original owners. The previous owners wife bought it new and when she passed away in 2014 her husband kept it till last year. The car had 2k of repairs done to it before he sold it to the dealer. New timing belt and everything. Had all original books and even the records on how much they paid for it when new. All original car but it had high mileage. It’s still not prefect, many cosmetic issues but it drives perfectly. With it being my first car I’m currently fixing those minor issues and then I’m hoping to keep it. Car won’t see another winter and will be kept all original.
When I was 19 I had bought my neighbour's 2007 mk5 golf which they had owned since new and only covered 19k miles when I bought it for 3k back in 2017. Was one of the tidiest examples but being a 1.9tdi with that mileage, it was gutless as it had never been driven hard in its life. Sold it for a few months later for £6k with 21k on the clock
About engine noise. I had an MB - W126 series 420. I had to look at the tachometer to see if the engine was going. Well, if I had opened the door, I would hear a low rumbling, as I would hear it when I was driving. Remarkably silent, especially with those tires I used to have.
@@DaleSteelI disagree they probably will given its condition, but probably not a few years ago though prices were lower, that’s why it’s such a mad car world atm!
I bought an X reg Mondeo a few years ago which 36000 from new. It was 14 years old and immaculate. That was till my ex found out it about and took a fork to every panel except the roof. The only panel she couldn’t reach, I’d had it 3 days I got quoted over a £1000 to repaint it. Needless to say I didn’t bother just touched it in as best as I could.
Sold my Mk5 1.6 FSI couple of months ago, had like 270.000 KM on the clock and still drove really really well. So much life still left in this perticular car!
@@daanwth checked the gov website and looks like this one might be ok by about a year Golf mark 5 - 1.6 litre (85kw) FSI made from August 2003 to May 2004 incompatible with E10
My cousin's had a silver MK5 Golf with 20000 miles or so after 12 years of use (they bought it new). It was a very unreliable car although immaculate to look at (timing chain went for one thing!). When they exchanged it there was a warning light on that the dealer hadn't been able to fix and every month or so it would be in limp mode. Loads of other things broke over the years. Hope this one is better. I can't believe they bought another new Golf (a Mk7 and thus far it's been perfect)
I see that you often keep your hand on the gear lever while driving, you should not do that because you will destroy the gearbox, the rings in it will wear out irregularly and you will get a wobbly gear lever. additional costs as a result. after shifting into the next gear, simply release it, the solution is that simple
Great review Matt, thank you for honesty. I think value is relative. Where would you get something of that size, quality, the level of specification and technology, for the money? Forget the badge… as you said, it’s better quality than the e-tron that you reviewed recently. I’m biased though. I’ve got a 6 seat GT-Line S on order
This car lived over the road from me from new until 2018. Can confirm it was always garaged and meticulously looked after. Small world.
The original owner would be turning in his grave to see the condition now (before being cleaned). Interesting to see the steering wheel with NO buttons.
12,000 miles later....Wow! She should be ashamed, sorry.
Yeah right- stop blagging
I'm liking the nice steady stream of videos...a good variety of cars and ones that suprise me now and then. Nice work Matt 👍
Thanks 👍
Clean cars are faster as well
You did the right thing in not replacing the plates.
Nice car for someone
I love seeing old low mileage cars. Others have said exactly what I was thinking, cherished by the original owner then trashed by the people he left it to. I don't know why but it actually upsets me. Anyway it fell into the right hands at the end. Hope it goes to a good home.
Nice one Matt, a little gem of a car. Well worth the new owner doing some preventative extra rust protection.
Absolutely

I am very tempted by this car.
Hidden Gems, seems your subscribers have got very interesting cars 👌🏼
Yes they do
I have the exact same feeling driving a clean/ dirty car.
You're not alone I feel the same when I wash mine.
12min video straight to the point I knew you bagged something good 👍🏾
I had two Mk. 5 Golf's from new, an 05 and 08 reg. Best cars I've ever owned. I only wish they were still making them!
Lovely low mileage example. Maybe it’s the car trader in me but is the OSR door a slightly different shade? 😬 Not that it matters but I can’t help but notice these things 😅
I always look forward to seeing your videos it’s the highlight of my week! Keep up the great work 😊
What a great transformation
I love a good old golf it really does look like new fantastic job
Love your videos:)
Well done, hopefully you find the right buyer (someone who will keeps it as it is) I would buy it but the steering wheel is on the wrong side😁
Saludos desde Suecia!🇸🇪
It seems that everything will “buff up” - your excellent videos have inspired me to send my wife off to the spa and detailers for a good buff. I am expecting her to return looking 20 years younger. Worth doing because she is a one owner model and has been garaged for life. Lets see.
Oh oh oh! Talking of Golfs, I bought a 2003 Mk4 Golf GTI last weekend! Two owners, 154k miles, MOT until November. Needs a bit of work but most of it I can do myself.
£500!
Loving it so far
A clean car drives better than a dirty car. That is so true. I've always noticed a clean car feels lighter to drive.
Good video Matt 👍🏼
Good video again Matt. I prefer these one with the more affordable cars that you have been doing lately.
I had a mark 5 Golf up until last year and sold it to a mate for only a few thousand dollars. The clean absolutely changed it. Yeah I was caught out with old tyres on a previous Toyota. Tread looked fine but they were old and had started to harden up.
I love these older low mileage cars too, Id buy that Golf in a Heart beat.
Love the new format for this video! Same amount of detail in less time.
I have the exact same reaction every time the frost-warning buzzer goes off on my VW. 😆
Dunno about the computer problem, sometimes with volvos it can be a electrical nightmare. Though you can get lucky
This reminds me of when I found a car for my mother online almost 3 years ago. One owner 2011 Toyota Corolla 1.4l petrol with 16,000km on the clock, it was always kept in a garage and done most of its commuting to the shops or going to church. Couldn't believe the condition.
I've walked farther than that golf's mileage since 2005! 😌
Hahah me too I bet
Do love a golf and my lupo TDI sport might need changing to something ulez worthy 😢😢😢
Yes I like the golf ive had two of them in my life they are fairly reliable.
Glad you made a reasonable proftit on it as you say you can make a loss on some of your cars . Hope 2024 you make a profit on all your cars
Kevin
I definitely would recom anyone who is looking for a good car to buy it fro you
Kevin
I have to agree Matt, after a valet the drive seems so much better lol :)
My family 2 months replaced our tired, old Nissan Almera Tino with a low mileage 2012 Nissan Note that had only done 43,000 miles. 😊
Nice to see you actually make a few quid! Lovely golf, I had that 1.6 petrol in an Audi, it was always smooth and economical. Great stuff
Beautiful Golf Matt well worth every penny
Such as beautiful Golf we don't see every day
Well done 💯
I agree, a clean car always seems to drive better than a dirty one. Amazing survivor that.
I love how they moved the wheel on the right side for UK but they kept the hand brake on the left side hahaha
This channel is great , love to c what your doing with the older cars brilliant
I have absolutely zero interest in cars, but after somehow coming across this channel last week, I have to say that I am really enjoying the content.
Wow, thanks!
We get it, you drive a Jag, very well done
What a crazy motoring world we’re in when an 18-year old car can potentially be worth £4k+ 😨 albeit with very low mileage😅
£4995. Its all about the mileage and the condition. The last 2005 Golf I had I sold for £650 but it was rusty and had done loads of miles
We are very lucky/spoilt to have depreciated cars...abroad thie will be worth like 10K
Nobody will pay over 4k
It's amazing for me to see such a car.
Almost every single used car sold in my country are 200,000 km or more.
Even 2018 models.
I wonder if Matt has told the buyer it has to be run on super. They can't be run on e10 apparently.
@@danmoney9932 they can be run on e10 just fine, that was i think only in older models...
@@daanwth checked the gov website and looks like this one might be ok by about a year
Golf mark 5 - 1.6 litre (85kw) FSI made from August 2003 to May 2004 incompatible with E10
@@danmoney9932 correct, so luckily only older models.
What a gem, great result
Wow! What a result on the valet absolutely mint. This belongs in a Museum it's that good.
Great vid great coat for the snow ,really straight car..👍👍
Great review Matt, thank you for honesty. I think value is relative. Where would you get something of that size, quality, the level of specification and technology, for the money?
Forget the badge… as you said, it’s better quality than the e-tron that you reviewed recently.
I’m biased though. I’ve got a 6 seat GT-Line S on order
Agree! I love driving my car when it’s clean I feel like it’s such a different experience 😂
This is the exact car i have, (not sure what year this is but mine is 2003) Golf works like a charm!
