Volkswagen's transformation of Skoda, from poor also ran to competitive mainstream car maker, must surely be one of the biggest success stories of the motor industry.... Today's Skoda cars now stand comparison with any other brand at a similar price. And one thing you always see in Skoda road tests, is how good they are to drive...... The new Fabia I bought in 2001, had little touches I'd never seen in any car previously, like the little clip on the driver's windscreen pillar, to hold a parking permit, or the little sliding storage drawers under front seats, the little hooks in the boot for carrier bags, the little pockets on the side of the front seats, just big enough to take a mobile phone etc...... I personally feel the build quality of new Skodas now exceeds VW's...... it's almost as if Skoda were trying to prove something 😁😁
@@Brian-om2hh Totally agree. I can remember the old Skoda jokes before VW took it over (How can you double the value of a Skoda Estelle? Fill up the petrol tank.) They've done the same with SEAT (I own a 2020 SEAT León 1.5 which is a great little car). What a shame they didn't do the same to one of the now defunct British brands like Rover/MG or even one of the BMC brands.
From an economical angle it doesn't make much sense but from a restorative angle it's nice to see the car brought back to its near new form... Guessing that's why we keep coming back to watch more
Love stuff like this! I find unexceptional-spec older vehicles so much more interesting than the more exotic stuff. This gets my attention and appeals to me so much more than an equivalent age GTI. In another 10 years this will be appreciated a lot more - proper Festival of the Unexceptional worthy!
This is really cool. Going through the same thing with my late grandad’s 2014 Fabia 1.2TSI Elegance DSG, only 9900 miles! Washing off all the moss was so satisfying. It drives and feels brand new!
Well done Matt! What a transformation. Most people would just scrap these kind of cars but this one is near pristine and just needs some TLC and it will do someone proud. Probably is better for the environment keeping a older car on the road than buying a new ev, and for full disclosure I am all for EVs but I know they aren't for everyone.
The price breakdown always makes me appreciate working on my own car cause i personally think all the prices are absolutely insane. £462 on a service and MOT??? £300 on wheel trims??? But £350 for cambelt and water pump is pretty fair at a garage
Great video yet again Matt! I myself own a 2008 1.4 petrol tsi golf that has been parked up for around 4 years, it is a lot higher miles than this one but it’s so tidy and was destined for the scrap yard as the owner wanted it out of the storage unit so I saved it and need to get it sorted and back on the road!
A great job for Matt and his team 300 quid for those wheel trims could have had a look in some scrap yards I would put the car with a specialist auction house should find the right bidder
6 years is crazy. I had to let my car sit a few months and I was scared and was ready to replace every single fluid before I even really drove it again 😂
We bought a Citroën GSA that had been idle for 9 years. Asked the seller how to get it off the truck (they delivered it). His answer: "Well, you start and drive it". We completely assumed it'd not run. Thing ran great. Noisily, because no exhaust, but great.

Well done Matt , it’s so refreshing to see a car dealer/seller do what should be done, so many people cut corners . Spoke to a car dealership in Bolton bravoauto yesterday re a tiguan they were selling that was 12.5 years old. At no point in its history did it show a cambelt and water pump change and then the salesman there said that’s it’s only an advisory and because of the age of the car they wouldn’t spend that money. And then went on to say that they give a 12 mth warranty and denied that if the belt went on my drive home to wales the warranty would cover it . What a shambles of a garage no motor warranty would cover that if it’s never been done , keep up your sterling work
Fantastic work Matt. I'm like you, absolutely love the satisfaction of seeing a car go from dog rough to like new, this is probably the biggest makeover of that kind that I've seen. Someone will definately have a soft spot for it and want it.

I cant get over the price of the wheel trims. Over 300 quid for a few bits of plastic! All the hard work and expertise the paint guys put into the car for nor much more than the plastic trims that are only going to end up in a bus at the side of the road.
I had to rewind the video 3 times to make sure I hadn't misheard that price. £300 for a set of wheel trims feels illegal. Some one at VW must have got a massive bonus for thinking 'what do most people loose that's dirt cheap to make? Wheel trim! We'll gouge the cheap folk, who don't spring for the alloys, for replacements or it'll put them off and we do t have to waste time making spares'
Just choked on my coffee with the price of the wheel trims!! Bet that's the only set they've sold in years. However, I undersrand why you did it but not many others would. So easy to fit a set of alloys but that wouldn't have been right on that car. Top job as always. Great work. Keep it up.
A couple of months ago I bought a 22.000 miles Golf 4 from 2001. It got service each year. Also a 1.4. My list. New tires New belts New rubbers af the front Airco service Oil service The first few monts it had some oil consumption. But is improved to almost nothing.
The 1.4 are a low insurance group and very desirable for a first car . Early 1.4 s are belt driven (2x belts) later models are chain . I bought my son an 09 mk6 which I thought was low mileage at 38k ! 😂 in the very early days of lockdown , it’s worth more now than what I paid for it.
I don't even need to watch the video to know you'll turn it round. For me it's a no brainer 9k all day long the golf has a massive cult following a true golf enthusiast will pay top money for an old golf in mint condition over a newer car any day. Well done Matt
Stunning…. And the fact u never cut corners is so impressive, you’ll never get labelled as cheap Charlie …. This has got raffle shack written all over it Matt
I had an Alfa GTV that sat under a tree for several years. You couldn't even identify the colour such was the growth of moss and thick layers of tree sap. After about an hour of deep cleaning and power washing it came up like new. Far from damaging the paintwork, those layers actually protected it from the elements, particularly the sun which will oxidise paint finish. There was also zero signs of rust which I suspect were kept at bay by the same process of keeping the oxygen away from the paint. Great find and the right guy will pay big money. I'd sell my house for an original Alfasud or Citroën GS. CHEERS!
That should be in a VW museum, a very neat tidy like new old car! Strangely I have been subscribed to the channel for a while, watched this video then I realised I was no longer subscribed.
Constantly impressed by the resurrections of these cars, Matt. I don't know why, but "'Fuel tank 55 litres', written on the back of an EON bill" made me laugh. Great job on the final restoration, very tidy example now you've brought this low mileage belter out of mothballs properly. It looks stunning for a 15 year old motor.
Definitely done the right thing matt, car looks fabulous. I am a golf fan,got my bluemotion estate for me dogs and I love it,sounds strange but they seem to have a bit a of character and you get quite fond of em, Great video matt.
You already said it, Matt…. But unless it’s a collector, even with low mileage, who in the right mind would pay £6000 for a 15 year old bog standard golf. I’ve since seen it on your website for £10,000! Jesus! They’d have to be nuts to pay that but there will be a golf nut out there with more money than sense and someone will pay it, it’s just a waiting game for the collector. It does look amazing when finished though, fair play for bringing it back to showroom condition.
£10k for this is very high but I’m sure someone will take it off you. Great video my mate found a 5000 mile 54 plate golf and only paid £300 for it done what you done and drives it now. Great video yet again
My neighbours house has been going through probate for a while. They’ve just pulled out a 64 plate polo SE with 4K miles on the clock. It’s been garaged since new. He was 97 when he died and bought it brand new.
Wow! Yeah..... tricky one! The Carvertical valuation was £4,439 and you said initially you could get £6k for it maybe and tbh that was maybe a bit of a stretch so..... £8k? £9k? that's definitely a hook that's gonna have to be left in the lake and hope you get a bite from a fan of this era of Golf. You might be waiting for a while but you've definitely done everything right. You've given it the TLC it deserves even if £300 for the 4 original VW wheel trims is ridiculous. She looks absolutely fabulous Matt. Good job!
my TDI sat for 3 years outside the house. Car got filthy, battery died 2 times, one tyre somehow got a puncture, rear pads/disks got rusty, Diesel sat in it for 3 years, Charged battery, got tyre sorted, got brakes sorted, runs perfect! Two experiences with possessions of recently deceased. 1st was working at on old people’s home, clearing the rooms out when a resident died. Everything would get packed up and either saved for family or if there was none to a charity shop. There would always be chocolates, sweets or biscuits, or any combo of them. They couldn’t go so we’d always share them amongst the staff. 1st time was weird, but just became normal. One of the old ladies said she would have a new box ready for us when she departed, and she was true to her word. Next time was as an estate agent, old boy with no family passed away leaving no family. When we went in to value it nobody had been in since the paramedics. He’d died in bed and everything was as it was. Such a weird feeling, it was a shithole but he has some quite valuable stuff. Some things hit quite weird, like bookmarks halfway through books and sometimes part written letters. Haven’t thought about that for years. Great video by the way, done a brilliant job.
That was a treat seeing a derelict being brought back to life like that….if I was in the market for a replacement car I’d seriously consider that motor…❤
Great job Matt. I would rather have something like this which is far less complex than the current Golf's like a lot of the latest cars ...Complicated and Soul less ..then again I'm a 70 year old Ludite 😂
This is one of those cars that UK Corporate might be interested in. Manufacturers often like to buy-back cars that are extremely low and extremely high mileage. Try VW Stockport, if they don't bite try VW UK directly.
You know, I think the previous owners family (and the previous owner, looking on yonder from heaven, if one does indeed exists) would be very pleased with the way you have respectfully restored this car to a like new standard. Its always hard for family's to sell a car after its owner has died, especially when the departed was fond of it. So, nice to see this car was not cast aside to make a quick buck without any thought. I bet an elderly retired couple wanting a simple easy to drive local run about will buy this for £8,000 as their next and last car. Great video.
By the way Matt, I said previously that I can tell that we have very different world views but that I still found you intensely likeable and watchable. Well I was thinking about this whilst watching the white jag video - the reason is that I can tell that you share certain values that are very important to me - integrity, consistency, the belief in doing things properly, and most importantly, the belief in treating people fairly. With these ethics so many differences that cause friction between people would become insignificant. Definitely want to by my next car from you.
Recently rebuild one of theee engines, was quite suprised at the momentary 2 second piston slap sound on start up, known issue on these engines but they do go on forever. If belts and water pumps done regularly. Whoever buys this, if it’s serviced regularly it will go on forever.
I don't understand why people get so excited by older vehicles with such low mileage. Extremely low mileage usually means a lot of cold starts and stop-and-start driving. Because they do such a low annual mileage they usually aren't maintained that well. Usually a well-maintained vehicle with normal mileage where it goes on motorway runs and frequently reaches operating temperatures is in better mechanical condition.
Yeah, but as Matt knows, there are people out there who want v low mileage cars. That's just the the way. In all other respects it's like getting a new car.
I'd be really surprised if this sells for 8 or 9 grand. Despite the low milage it is still just a red 3-door 1.4 2008 Golf. It's not worth collecting those and this generation was one of the worst VW has ever built.
yeah, aircon does take about 2 minutes or so to kick in. I also appreciate that you try to save cars, when they can. Its really a breath of fresh air. I do think that it is worth 8k - 9k just because of what it is.
It'll be interesting to hear how much you do get for this one. My view is that some collectors will be disappointed that you've put a lot of new bits on the car as they will be looking for complete originality.
I disagree. There’s hardly any new bits anyway and just making it look like a new car, particularly with that low mileage, is the way to go. The new tyres and wheel trims are really good and show off the car.
A collector will want this. There is a niche of collecting for bog standard cars. Some display the most basic next to the top of the line of the same model for contrast. Also the bog standard ones are the worst survivors. Most become cheap runarounds or learner cars which gives them quite high attrition while the more desirable specs are cherished. Try finding a diesel or non-GTI mk2 Golf, you can’t, they’re all gone. Also sadly, with estate sales there is always a leech around who begs cars like these off the family when they are grieving. They have no interest i preserving it like you have. People wonder why cars disappear off the road. It’s because they don’t get the treatment that you have given it at this stage of its life. Well done. Best of luck with the sale.
I love how you do the whole process in one video, and not spread it across 5 episodes. Great work, keep it going. 👏
This format works so well for these.

Couldn't agree more. Spot on.
17:50 *Take it down the Winnats Pass soon sort 'em out Lad !*
The price breakdown always makes me appreciate working on my own car cause i personally think all the prices are absolutely insane. £462 on a service and MOT??? £300 on wheel trims??? But £350 for cambelt and water pump is pretty fair at a garage
Me too
Great video yet again Matt!
@@rollingtroll honestly, you only really need to change your oil regularly if you have synthetic oil.
Im overseas a lot. I disconnect the battery
Your mechanic must really like you, if you’re prepared to replace ALL fluids for a car that may have sat around for 6-8 months...🤣
@@CL4SSiCS No, that's absolute shady-mechanic-speak. Every type of oil should be changed regularly. Its lubricating properties and the resistance to shearing, among others, change as its being used. It also collects any contaminants that could otherwise harm the engine.
I got hold of a Renault Twingo MK 1 in exactly the same conditions. Not even 2000 miles on the clock.
I had everything buffed up and it came out lovely and absolutely everything works, including the AC and the cigarette lighter.
Strange feeling though, to sit in a brand new old car.
Finally, I decided to keep it.
Superb job, Matt. It really is wonderful seeing what was (once upon a time) somebody’s pride and joy being restored to its former glory and given a second chance. ❤️ Let’s hope it ends up with a new owner that looks after it. 🙏
Hi i have just sold a 21 year old audi a6 c5 2.5 tdi quattro sport with 6300 miles i didn't want to to drive it in case someone ran into me it has now gone into a car collection nice to see the your attention to detail keep up the good work
Genuinely loved that video yes it was a poverty spec Golf, but the fact you gave it a new lease of life was brilliant and with no corners cut no expense spared. It looked fantastic. Love seeing these older cars rescued and given a second chance
'Poverty spec ' cars are SSSSO desirable! Lovin' this one.
Lol bit disrespectful to the old boy if you ask me
@@BrandNew777 Really?
GREAT !!! now I have a Golf 2010 1.4 DSG 37,000 km original mileage! no accident, not painted! the best car!
What a stunning little car..Such a treat to see someone not cutting corners and doing a proper job..The car deserved it..Great job Matt
I got a Hyundai I30 from 2010 with only 4850km on the Clock i paid 2500€, it was Locking the same as your Golf. i done the same thing to it, Service/Mot/cleaning. Overall i paid 3200€ because i done everything myself. you will 100% sell it, low milage cars are always good for sell even it is older. i sold my 2 days after i put it on sell for 6800€. So GL on selling it.
Well done Matt, another one saved. I would've loved to watch the detailing process for this one, the transformation is so satisfying.
Buying genuinel wheel trims, replacing the aerial, and putting on quality tyres you took that golf to a whole new level. I hope you get all the money for it.
There's a lot of people who like the poverty spec cars. I'd say there are less basic cars, than GTI spec at car shows.
Red paint and lacquer peel...Years ago I had a Toyota Carina! It faded into the lightest pink. There were tons of them one time, and I can't remember the last time I saw one.
I think it's quite amazing that the AC works after so many years! Usually the gas can start to escape if you don't use it for longer periods of time.
VW AC systems 👌🏼
I have a 2003 beetle tdi and it’s ice cold. Obviously had it on today 🥵❄️❄️
@@Dan23_7 Wish the same could be said about Honda's AC systems. I've already spend a lot trying to resolve my old civic's AC issues, while my mate's equally old (but higher milage) VW Golf blasts out icy air ❄
£9.995 on your website! Fair enough, it’s pristine & you’ll probably get some cheeky offers
Glad to see you paid a fair price for the car and it wasn't sold for under a grand to someone taking advantage of the tragedy, you deserve a decent return for the integrity and dedication to restoring it to its near new condition.
I think he paid way too much. The risks that the paintwork would be uneven or that components might have seized up should have kept the cost lower. He was lucky, and I hope he gets a good profit for his outlay.
What a shambles of a garage no motor warranty would cover that if it’s never been done , keep up your sterling work
This wasn't quite a barnyard find, but it's so satisfying seeing what's underneath when given a proper clean.
Fantastic work Matt. I'm like you, absolutely love the satisfaction of seeing a car go from dog rough to like new, this is probably the biggest makeover of that kind that I've seen. Someone will definately have a soft spot for it and want it.
I'd have had the moss for my hanging baskets.......
Yes it is a Basic MK5 1.4 petrol Golf, yes it is 15 years old but its still brand new! The only person whould would do this to such a stunning well kept example of a MK5 Golf is Matt!
Great buy and great video as awlays Matt! :D
Thoroughly entertaining. One of, if not the best, car channels on TH-cam. New subscriber here. Going through the back catalogue at a rapid rate and genuinely loving it. Well done, Matt. 👏👏
Much appreciated!
Interestingly before they put the Concorde at MAN in a hangar they kept it with the grime on purpose, it kind of protected the body work. They informed us that the Bristol Concorde was always washed and it damaged the bodywork.
Looks amazing! Cant believe how expensive the wheel trims was 😮
Just passed this car on the way into work (after having watched this video during breakfast!). Looks great! Now to finish the second half of the video.
i'm amazed how good it looks after the clean up
24:00 *Would be prepared to go as high as £4k as my son {supply teacher} needs a new car (Present Fiat Punto 2004 with approaching 100k miles) Cut your losses totally overspent on Spark Plugs, Wheel Trims etc !*
This video and you’re last video with the jag have been the best so far , for most of us it’s not how much money you make out of the deal it’s the car and the journey to saleable condition, this video was absolutely brilliant !!!! As far value it’s literally a new car , hope you get plenty for it and someone is extremely happy with it ,we’ll probablyNever see one like this again
Now that's a minter. I enjoy these "restoration" videos more than I probably should... they give me the itch to do the same, that's the conern! Good job as always, Matt.
Glad you like them!
I`m a fan in Australia and was just going through your channel to find any last few videos that I`d not seen and came across this one. What a brilliant job you`ve done on this Golf,so glad you saved it and made a really excellent car.Maybe if any relations of the owner who passed away see this, they might like to buy a showroom condition car.
You sir have done something amazing for the automotive history!
Well done, for being sensitive and respectful. 10:51
I cant get over the price of the wheel trims. Over 300 quid for a few bits of plastic! All the hard work and expertise the paint guys put into the car for nor much more than the plastic trims that are only going to end up in a bus at the side of the road.
Oh so I did hear that right. Sweet lord that's pricey...at that point eBay some alloys and refurb them maybe?
A friend of mine has a new passat, diamond cut alloys were kerbed, dealer wanted 2.5k euros to replace one😂
Haha 🤣 over 300 pound set wheel tims they gold plated
@@columcreaven8860 alloys and trims are completely different
Lovely car that and despite the cost, you have done the right thing by it. Low mileage original cars like that need preserving.
Also a 1.4.
My list.
New tires
New belts
New rubbers af the front
Airco service
Oil service
The first few monts it had some oil consumption.
I've had mine 15 years and put 110k on without issues. Pretty solid really.
I winced when you read out the wheel trim cost! Nice car, I had a Mk5 1.4 FSI S as my first company car and loved it.
Love these kind of videos these are the best when you bring the old beasts back to life 💙
I had an Alfa GTV that sat under a tree for several years.
CHEERS!
Looking forward to this one 😁
Edit: WOW! What a turn around, sure is a beauty, great job Matt.
Thanks! 👍
Yes same here. Just a shame it’s red 😂

Just shows what a bit of “buffing” can do
a bloody proper Brit. a pleasure to see your love and dedication to older cars. watch every vid you make. Thank you from way down under.
What an incredible makeover! Great job Matt.👍🏻 I would definitely look for such cars which is just rare to find.
The gearbox can be suspect in those too. But at 1.4 engine is the PERFECT town car and shopping trolley. Short trips of say no more that one hour
You’re a sick man Matt… and so am I because I think the Golf is utterly awesome. Great job 👍
Thanks 👍
Thats a lovely little car, red 3 door golf will always be a smart motor. Worth every penny
Definitely done the right thing matt, car looks fabulous. I am a golf fan,got my bluemotion estate for me dogs and I love it,sounds strange but they seem to have a bit a of character and you get quite fond of em,
Great video matt.
Love seeing low mileage cars being brought back to life, currently have locked away a 11k mile 2001 106 1.1 Zest 2 5dr.
I agree!
I have a Mark 2 Gti,in good condition,and I don't think even that would fetch £10k,but,as Matt says,Nostalgia can be a powerful thing!
Totally agree! Wonderful content but It is still a 15 year old car.
Up on the website for £9999
I think the Mk5 is still years off being a collector / classic but great job keeping it original. 10k a bit steep IMO, maybe £6995.
Classic second hand car dealer stuff. "I think I overpaid at £3k, but it could be worth double that"
*Proceeds to list it for over thrice that*
As it is ULEZ compliant, advertise for London market in mind, as it will save the new owner a fortune. Great vid again Matt
£10k for this is very high but I’m sure someone will take it off you. Great video my mate found a 5000 mile 54 plate golf and only paid £300 for it done what you done and drives it now. Great video yet again
Maybe, I think it's going to struggle.
My neighbours house has been going through probate for a while.
They’ve just pulled out a 64 plate polo SE with 4K miles on the clock. It’s been garaged since new.
He was 97 when he died and bought it brand new.
Of course you can its a golf nothing is impossible if you put the effort in and money 👍👍👍
Wow! Yeah.....
Car got filthy, battery died 2 times, one tyre somehow got a puncture, rear pads/disks got rusty, Diesel sat in it for 3 years,
Charged battery, got tyre sorted, got brakes sorted, runs perfect! (Car needed to be washed twice and i had to get the toothbrush out to sort the moss in the rubber seals).
Oh yeah, needed to refil air con, my air con kicks in before i move.
Stunning job, Matt, well done. It looks incredible.
Haven’t watched this yet, I was actually mid-yawn about to put my phone down and just saw the title 😂 excited for this 1!
Great job Matt. I would rather have something like this which is far less complex than the current Golf's like a lot of the latest cars ...Complicated and Soul less ..then again I'm a 70 year old Ludite 😂
Totally agree
This is one of those cars that UK Corporate might be interested in. Manufacturers often like to buy-back cars that are extremely low and extremely high mileage. Try VW Stockport, if they don't bite try VW UK directly.
That business card (13:05) was indeed in Polish and it was for butcher. Cheers from Gdańsk, Poland :)
Ah thank you!
Very kind. Thanks
That's just the
the way. In all other respects it's like getting a new car.
@Matt Wright Until it is driven daily and it starts leaking like a sieve from perished gaskets.
23:19 the head scratch afterwards 🤣
We’ve all been there 😂
Nice one Cyril ( Matt ).For restoration of this car superbly done.
You will get £8000
I'd be really surprised if this sells for 8 or 9 grand.
What new bits? He’s just replaced the original bits with original new condition bits surely?
Haha really?
I would also like to know too!
Matt, could you not claim the VAT back?
Well done for restoring this car!! The difference between before and after is staggering!
