    I purchased one of these when they first came out with the intention of making a freight version of 844. After a few days of running it I decided it was time to decoder swap it. I chose a competitors decoder (sorry) but ran across the same issues with the lights that George did here. I am not sure what the electrical engineer at BLI was thinking when they came up with that board design, but it made for a good "WTF" moment when I had the same realization regarding the locomotive lights that George did. I ended up replacing both the head and mars light with a 3mm LED bulb, drilling out the casing just enough to accommodate the LED. The number boards and class lights threw me for a loop too, but I ended up using the stock LEDs and just running new wire to the board and jumping them together. Typically on a steam locomotive, the number boards and class lights would be on the same circuit with other auxiliary lights, so it wasn't completely un-prototypical and it did not bother me. Unfortunately, the competitors decoder I installed messed up and the engine has been sitting on my workbench ever since.

    Incredible installation, I bought one of the Greenbrier from BLI and was only able to run I’m twice before the decoder shorted on me, bought a tsunami2 about a year ago and want to install it in my BLI, but was always afraid to due to me never installing a decoder before, now with this video, I will try my best to follow along and hopefully have my model running again. Thanks for sharing.

    Great install video George. I changed the BLI sound out for a TSU-2200 installed in the tender with cube speaker up front as well and setting up the graphic equaliser and other back ground sounds. Like you the front headlight throw me as well when I thought they were wired up correctly. Fiddly job changing those LED's.
    Keep up the great work on those installs mate. Look forward to see what you do with fine tuning of it.

    I love the look of the BLI models… I hate the sound and motor control. I have both a BLI, FEF and challenger, I have entertained the idea of swapping them out with tsunami 2’s (they are the only models I have that I haven’t swapped out for soundtraxx yet) but I’m a little intimidated because of the way they are wired up from the factory. I took my challenger apart, took a look at it and put it back together because I didn’t dare tackle it because of all of the different circuit boards it had (I wasn’t sure exactly what I was looking at). Thank you for this video. After watching this I may be willing to give swapping the decoder a shot.

    Just a thought on this installation. Any wires the go into the locomotive or tender shell you can use one of those pin connecters so you can separate the two if needed.

    As always George, a very good instructional video. I find it fascinating with some of the extra care with wiring. Never to old to learn new tricks but I will not be switching my BLI over because the grandkids love the smoke. A few years back I stopped buying Broadway Limited locomotives because of the issues with converting to Soundtrax decoders and for the same reason, I will not buy Scaletrains locomotives. Athearn Genesis locomotives have far surpassed these companies with much better sound and lighting effects. Propitiatory decoder setup has hurt their reputation. The extra detail you put in the cab was amazing.
    I'll take my money elsewhere. Rob

    the installing is very good but I prefer ESU loksound for the UP 844, it’s the original sound of 844 and don’t sounds like the big boy.

      They are very similar locos, but different, but we also have done recordings on all three of their locos. We have a great working relationship with the UP Steam Crew and look forward to more recordings to come in the future. But also note that I did not use the Big Boy Chuff. I’d encourage you to give it a chance. Anyone can record a loco from afar.

    whooped my ass just watching! I'm with you on the frustration levels of 'just why do they do that stuff?' BLI has the building knowledge of how, I just don't understand why they dummy down the models with Crew Chatter or Paragon? Their smoke units suck, I'll bet my vintage lap-top sound volume did not just fail at the end but you want to go back and tweak the system, you are a master at DCC and installs, I only wish I was as savvy and skillful as you, now if I could take a moment and dream machine the prefect import from BLI, Soundtraxx Ready, just drop in the decoder, thanks George, k

    • @SoundtraxxDCC

      We understand some installs like this are not easy. Thats why we film and do everything we can to help customers figure it out. More and more manufacturers are going to plug-in style boards like the TSU-N18 or TSU-21PNEM8 so hopefully installs will continue to be easier. But when they do not follow the standard or have proprietary circuitry it can still get tricky.

    Five thumbs up! One question: Are all four speakers wired together in one series or are the two pairs connected in parallel to the decoder?

    • @SoundtraxxDCC
      @SoundtraxxDCC  2 ปีที่แล้ว

      Speakers are wired in a series-parallel configuration. The 2 cubes in the boiler are wired in series. The 2 speakers in the tender are wired in series. Then these pairs are then wired in parallel, dropping it back down to a 8-Ohm load.

    It’s a shame BLI just uses recycled and cleaned up QSI sounds. If they kept their models how PCM had them (DCC ready/21pin sound installed) doing this would’ve also been a cake walk.
    Only reason I haven’t done the conversion to my FEF yet is I like the smoke and smoking whistle but at the same time also waiting for the decoder to fry on its own.
    While loosing smoke, especially the whistle, is kind of sad to me it is a great spot for a boiler barker while the tender could house the Big Boy speaker from Scale Sound Systems.
    I will definitely use this as a how to for when I have to switch my engine to a quality sound system. Sorry BLI if your watching and reading this, good models poor sound.
    Great video! Looking forward to the next round of videos to help make my models better than stock!
    Edit: from 2:05:30 to 2:06:40 there is a muted section. I don’t know if it was intentional or not just letting you know. :)

    Hi George ,
    I have been watching and following a lot of your videos on installations into different locos, and I must say that the Tsunami2 Decoders have got me very keen on giving this a try.
    I am a very loved fan the Broadway limited locomotives, bur I must agree that the sound of the locos have become some-what a very common sound.
    It just so happens that the sound decoder of my GS4 4452 Southern Pacific Daylight has given up the ghost and bit the bullet.
    Can you please help me in the direction of what would be the best Tsunami2 decoder to install to replace the old and return life to my now silent ghost on rails.
    Bring life back to the Daylight 4452.
    PS is it possible to maintain the smoke unit to synchronise with the sound?
    Manythanks

      @SoundtraxxDCC  2 ปีที่แล้ว

      soundtraxx.com/products/tsunami2-digital-sound-decoders/tsu-2200/ You can mount it in the tender. The loco will likely need to be opened to confirm which wires are for what purpose, and likely some re-wiring will need to be addressed. I have not had one of their GS4 locos personally, so I cannot comment 100%, so use the test and confirm method. In my case, I just remove all their circuit boards and wire the loco up directly, so I know that the wires are where they need to be, just like in this video.

  • @bobmorning
    @bobmorning 7 หลายเดือนก่อน +1

    The 4-8-4's have a connector at the rear of the engine that is a PC board with the 8 pin male connector, if you unscrew it from the frame and look at the topside of it, it clearly identifies which wire does what. Not sure why this individual needed to disassemble the engine; tender yes, but engine is wasted effort.

    • @SoundtraxxDCC
      @SoundtraxxDCC  5 หลายเดือนก่อน

      This in-depth video explains why I did this. This was intended to show how I did all the modifications to the model, added more lights, more speakers, and a CurrentKeeper. Not just install sound. If that’s all you want to do, yes, your labeling is right. But in this install, I added more lights. Therefore I did not have enough wires between the loco and tender to make those connections, so the decoder was located in the locomotive, along with a CK, and I added speakers in place of the smoke unit (smoke fluid can be a carcinogen) and rewired the entire loco. But adding under walkway (running) lights, firebox lights and more took a lot more work. So watch the entire 2 hours and you’ll understand why I did not do the shortcut. I wanted it to work properly.
