Good to see 844 strolling along without the diesel. Clean stack too!

    • @bcbloc02

I believe they run a heavy fuel oil like #5 that is much thicker than diesel in the burner on the 844. I was referring to the lack of a diesel locomotive in the consist though.

Chin Sown he's talking about a diesel locomotive in line not the fuel.....

When is the stack not clean? This isn't Europe. Our "tree huggers" make us play by the rules in the U.S. They're not a bunch of anti-U.S. fucktard government plants being paid by foreign governments to attack the U.S. in order to benefit from the consequences.

up 844 is the only steam locomotive that was never retired from a class 1 railroad.
this engine was built in December 1944 and this video was made in October 20th and this locomotive still runs to this very day which is something for all of us to be proud of!!!!!!

Love the diesel locos honking back at 844! Like 844's talking to them!
GEVOs: 844! You're BACK!!! How ya feeling, grand lady?
844: Like an almost totally new engine! I feel much like I did when I left the ALCO works in '44! How's the traffic these days guys?
GEVOs: We're actually in a bit of a recession. Traffic's down because the bottom fell outta the oil market. A lot of the older units have been stashed in storage yards. You being back in action's gonna give everybody a morale boost!
844: Oof, the shale boom's gone bust huh? Had to end sooner or later. I'll ask Ed if I can visit some of the stored units if we go near a storage yard on this trip, to cheer them up.
GEVOs: They would appreciate it, believe us.

Skip, I'm not a train spotter or much of a follower for that matter, but watching this machine hammer across the prairie hit me on an emotional level, maybe because I remember the transition from steam to diesel here in Canada back in the '50s.
What a beautiful restoration! I just hit full screen, turned up my earphones and soaked it all up. Great work, my friend, great work. I'm going to download this vid for old time's sake and also as a testimonial to a time that has now, sadly, passed.
Thank you for your work and thanks for posting.
    I am now subscriber 16,106.

Back in the 50s? You sure you folks weren't running steam well into the 60s and 70s like the Brits? I find that hard to believe. After all, same backward-ass governments and "head of state" and "money before lives" mentality.

    • @deeremeyer1753

Go to any "developing country" that a former or current "British" colony or territory or victim and you'll find plenty of steam power in daily use. India, China, etc. You should move there. Then you'd be where the technology you love and miss is a daily reality. Sound like fun?

Was at the Steam Shop on Friday. Finally got to see all the engines and cars. They are doing limited tours on Fridays in Nov and Dec. Had to buy the ticket well in advance through the Depot. The last time I saw the Cheyenne Depot it was fenced off and boarded up. Glad to see it restored as well. Only a 1.5 hour drive away. Don't know why it took me so long.

Someone much more observant than I figured she was doing 63.78 average for the time between 10-11 minutes. I'm guessing he was shooting for 65, though UP speed limits out there are likely 70.
As far as fuel, she consumes only the finest Bunker B, or number 5 fuel oil.

I take it that the first yellow car carries the water for 844's boiler? Or would they be making regular stops to re-supply? Want to bet that BigBoy 4014 will be doing a national tour once it is brought back to working condition? Seeing both of these giants would be a tremendous draw for rail enthusiasts everywhere!

    • @uprr838
      @uprr838 8 ปีที่แล้ว +1

The third series of the 800-series Northers were equipped with Centipede tenders that carried both fuel and water. Generally, the fuel space (oil) is over the four wheel truck. The water space is aft, over the five pedestal axles.
Trailing 844's tender is an auxiliary tender which carries additional water. This gives additional range between water stops. The road numbers these carry relate to the first series (800-819) 4-8-4's the auxiliary tenders were previously assigned to.

Yes, the first yellow tender is the auxiliary tender. There's a video hovering around TH-cam called 844 In Depth. In that video Ed Dickens explains that it is a tender from the 800 series of FEFs that also served as a fuel tender (I think) for the Gas Turbine Electrics. Hope this helps!

How is it that the tender behind the loco, which looks like it has bogey in front but 5 fixed axles under most of its length, can travel curves without "straightening the rails"? Are the flanges located farther inside than normal wheelsets on these wheels? Thanks to anyone who knows the answer. The "Big Boys" were similar and of course many large steam locos have fixed multiwheel tenders so the answer is probably simple. Just if anyone knows.

its 611 that still exists, and yes it would be nice, as well as the T1 if they ever get her built, but I do have people I have met that have told me they went in the west usa in colorado on the 2015 cannonball run that said he was on a locomotive that was steam and went 130mph, I dont know which engine, or the guys name but I have it on video, of course that kind of speed would not be allowed on the up I dont think and the rails in america are not maintained like they used to be so arrow straight routes that were once the home of high speed sprinters are not good for that anymore, like the old van wert to fort wayne pennsy racetrack, its not in good enough shape to do what they used to do, and its a major rail corridor for ns and the chicago fort wayne and eastern, enough so that locomotive repair shops are there in the area, ns has one in new haven just outside fort wayne, and the chicago and fort wayne has a 2 bay repair house in the old pennsy yard at pique in south end of fort wayne, not huge but they can replace engines turbos and wheels when they need to, or at least in the part of fort wayne that used to be part of pique yard the other part of it has the old road railler place for tripple crown that was closed up now someone else uses it for transporting stuff I forget who took it over but it was not closed up for long.
oh and yes finally its pure steam no diesles or huge amount of cars but boo no revinue freight either.

12:10 to 12:40 approximately 130 revolutions. Driver diameter 80 inches = 6 2/3 feet times pi = 20.944 ft per revolution times 130 revolutions = 2722.7 feet in 1/2 minute or 5445.4 feet per minute. In 60 minutes, 326525.6 feet is 61.88 miles per hour.
