  • Operation Cheap Jeep continues on BleepinJeep! In this installment I buy some cheap tires for a cheap Jeep. But hey, they look really good, they ride really good, will they offroad really good? Stay tuned to find out! But in this episode I want to talk a little about road force balancing or force matching. If you've never heard of it don't be ashamed, I had't either until I went over to Jason's shop at Rock Your 4x4! Ohh and by the way, we are raffling this thing off at the Jeep Invasion in August!

    Lots of people overprice their junk on Craigslist, but you can also find some good deals too.
    Like if the ad says "Would make a good project vehicle" it really means it's a piece of shit they can't fix.

    "$400 used but good 33" Chinaco mud claws. Around 50% tread left (1/64"), rims are good (only three of them leak but they'll hold air a whole day if you don't drive it). Will drop off at your place for an extra $50. No low balls; I know what I have."

    Well crap! When I was in college and it was just 10 years ago, I worked in a alignment and tire shop. Seeing this video made me realize how far even mounting and balancing technology has come along. Great video thanks for no music! Just watching a man do his job...something satisfying about that :)

    Finally starting my Jeep build! I have had da ton of ZJ's over the years but I finally get to build one the way I have been wanting. Picked up a new Iron Rock Off-road Premium 3.5" lift and a new rear sway bar. Also running some new 31" general grabber all terrains. Can't wait to get the axles trussed, lockers and a winch. I also have the np231 swap with the 5.2. Your builds are good motivation.

    The yellow dot on the tire is for aluminum wheels supposed to be lined up with the valve stem the red dot the same thing but for steel wheels if he would have done that the balance and run out all together would have been closer 👍😎

    @jwilb007 6 ปีที่แล้ว +7

    well for one that is a great machine but from what i saw at 9:20 there is a yellow dot on the tire that lines up with the valve stem and he didn't line them up so your tire will be farther out of balance than it's supposed to be

    i go to a tech school, and we have the tire and balance machines like those, and its nice to actually understand what the stuff on there meant. like runout. my instructors never taught me anything past putting the right weights on. that was some good info!!

    I have the same balancing machine at my work. Well used to. We have one left but we upgraded the rest to the newest model which uses lasers and magic to size the wheel and show where the weights need to be placed.

    That painted dot on the sidewall is suppose to be lined up with the valve stem.

    • @John-dz6vm
      @John-dz6vm 7 ปีที่แล้ว +3

      I was thinking about that around 9:08 Isn't it suppose to be yellow dot on valve stem unless you have a red dot than "red rules". Something like that. Probably not the end of the world but I was thinking the same thing.

    • @ANasCarBoi
      @ANasCarBoi 7 ปีที่แล้ว +7

      John true and true for both of you. You don't need to line up the dots, but if you can and remember to before you put air in the tire, you should do it. It just means you don't need to put on as many weights.

    • @MrMrsregor
      @MrMrsregor 7 ปีที่แล้ว +5

      why cant the folks that put on tires ever learn that !
      i have been telling them that for years and they all just look at me like i am making shit up

    • @kdigiacomo
      @kdigiacomo 7 ปีที่แล้ว +3

      Liam S - If he would have turned the tire he could have properly mounted it with nearly no weights. I don't always line up the dot, because I will position the tire until it barely needs any weight. Just because it zeros out on the balancer doesn't mean it's "right". Plus customers here like there tires "show mounted" to their wheels and don't care, so the tire sidewall lettering gets centered to the wheel and never put weights on the face of the wheel. That tire in this vid never should have taken that much weight. I'm not being rude, it's hard to explain correctly by writing on here.

    • @ANasCarBoi
      @ANasCarBoi 7 ปีที่แล้ว

      K Digiacomo of course that's ideal. That's similar what koeniggsegg does with their carbon fiber wheels. The add a few extra layers of carbon fiber to offset the weight of the tpms sensor so additional weights won't be needed. I work at a tire shop that requires speed because we get a lot of customers because we are in a highly populated area of Los Angeles, and also down the street from the notorious The Snake where jay Leno does his Jay Leno's Garage videos and car and motorcycle enthusiasts up and drive (and very often drift) up and down all day every day so we get a lot of performance cars. If I didn't need to be speedy with servicing a cars tires, I would do what you do, but alas I cannot :(

    You should see the balancers we have at discount tire. Ours measure with lasers only so you don't have to use the data set arm which he used to measure the wheel. it does automatic Road Force to measure run out and the hood automatically opens by itself oh I forgot to mention it's all touch screen too!

    We usually only road force if there is an issue balancing or an issue with a tire. same with run out, if it says it needs like 10+ ounces of weight you know you need to run those tests.

    Most all new tires have a dot marked on the side wall from the factory indicating the heavy side of the tire. This typically gets placed either near or away from the heavy or light side of the rim depending on type of rim alloy, steel, TPS. A welded steel rim is typically heaviest at the weld. Some alloy TPS rims are heaviest at the valve stem hole, some are not. These are the starting points before force matching.

    I noticed that your right rear has 2 weights almost 90 degrees away from each other. Your tire guy needs to calibrate his balancer. The only time you should have 2 weights on the same plain is like your right front where the weight calls for more than 3.00 ounces and they have to put 2 combined weights side by side to 0 out. The right rear is what is know as counterbalancing a tire.

    I noticed your headliner was stripped off. I did the same to mine and ended up spraying a coat or two of rubber undercoating on it. Scraped all of the headliner foam off before I did it also. Looks good, won't sag, and cost about 12 dollars instead of redoing the headliner. If it gets a scuff just spray a quick squirt on it and you are good to go. Just an idea for jeep folks out there who don't want to spend a whole lot or want to deal with headliner laying on the top of your head while driving.

      It's not about totally about caring enough, it's about the money. Flat rate guys mostly do care enough but if it's a true road force issue it's a pain in the ass to have to break everything down and do it right and it doesn't pay much, either. And most general service techs that do tire work either don't understand it, or they don't care.

    Cheap tires are perfect for what the jeep will be used for. Not like it's a daily or anything. I went with bfg AT ko2 on my xj but that's just because I couldn't finance cheap tires lol those are usually a cash deal thing. Took me 7 months to payoff $1000 worth of tires but nothing compares to bfg all terrain imo.

  • @elfirebeasto
    @elfirebeasto 7 ปีที่แล้ว

    Looks a lot better. Did you happen to look into a set of Treadwright Guard Gogs or Claws? They are a remolded tire. They used to let you request the carcass that was used. So, if you wanted good sidewall protection and flex, you could request the Claws on BFG KO2 carcasses. Just another cheap option for what I hear are decent tires.

      @MikeSmith-mp7lf 4 ปีที่แล้ว +1

      As a tire builder for the Uniroyal Goodrich tire plant in Opelika I can assure you that the "tire dot" on the side of a tire is simply a quality control stamp for a QC inspector. It has absolutely nothing to do with mounting purposes. We DO NOT mount every tire and run road force to determine where the heavy spot is. Secondly, it would not make any sense to do so as almost no rim is exactly the same, so one rim may be more out of round at the stem and another 180 degrees from the stem. The dot is only a myth! Yellow is Tuesday, red, Wednesday, and green Thursday. As the inspectors work 3 on 4 off shifts. It also coincides with the dot date code. Yellow 2218 would mean that tire was inspected Tuesday the 22nd week of 2018. Occasionally you have 2 dots. One will always be white. This second dot means the tire didnt meet QC but is still good for what used to be known as a "Blem" tire. It is safe for the road, but there is a noticeable defect somewhere. If you have 2 colored dots the tire didnt pass QC but was rerun through the banbury and passed the second time.

    I work for discount tire, and we use those same machines to balance! We use the balancers a little different, though. We use the changing machines WAY different, it was actually kinda hard to watch haha.

    • @bleepinjeep
      @bleepinjeep  7 ปีที่แล้ว

      +Garrett McDevitt do you guys use the machines to force match?, or do you just have the machines? I've always wondered how seriously these guys take their jobs... I've had hit and miss service from discount tire.

    • @NeoJelloBro
      @NeoJelloBro 7 ปีที่แล้ว

      BleepinJeep first off, I can all but guarantee that the hit or miss service is from new techs. There's a HUGE learning curve (usually around 6 or 7 months to get proficient)
      As far as force matching goes, we don't usually force match on the first mounting unless the customer requests it. The construction on modern day tires and wheels (especially on passenger tires, which is mostly what we do) is so good that it's rarely necessary. Big run-outs really only happen on larger vehicles, which have beefier suspension, and more tolerance for out of round tires. But if a customer complains of vibrations after the tires are balanced, we'll road force them. I hope that makes sense. If you have any questions, let me know!

  • @orgazmic13

    Most of those at the tire shop aren't legal to drive on the street here. Tires can't stick out more than 2" beyond the wheel well. And if they stick out at all. You are required to have mud flaps.

    • @Slaters_RC
      @Slaters_RC 7 ปีที่แล้ว

      Thom Geren all state laws are different. Here in Michigan your tires can stick out all you want. No flare or mud flap laws.

    • @orgazmic13
      @orgazmic13 7 ปีที่แล้ว

      Mr1998jeepcherokee I know they are different. That is why I made the statement where I live. Where you live they have frost laws. A lot of roads don't say if you are allowed to go down them certain times of the year. Until you get caught. Got busted twice there. Next time I want a map. Lol.😂 👍

    Personally on my own stuff. I road force everything. You should get a few miles on the tires before you do it tho. Brand new tires are never balanced after a few thousand miles

    If you by a new tire, there is a small yellow dot on the sidewall... this dot marks where the valve for inflating the tire shoult be. If you place the tire right according to the small yellow dot you dont need to ballance so mutch.

    • @veguardian9719
      @veguardian9719 5 ปีที่แล้ว

      Correct. It represents the lowest point of the sidewall. I nailed that dot *almost* every time

    Why didn't he match the valve stem with the yellow dot on the tire? If you match it up there's a possiblity little to no weight would be required.
