  • Changing the serpentine belt tensioner is an easy process that can be done with basic tools. This is shown for Toyota Highlander with 2.4-liter 2AZ-FE. See how to compress the tensioner to release the serpentine belt. See how to lift the engine to allow the tensioner mounting bolt to clear the frame. Same applies for Camry with 2.4-liter engine. Includes the serpentine belt routing diagram.

hey this is Frank this is a 2006 Toyota Highlander with a 2.4 L inline 2azfe engine this car is in the shop to remove and change the serpentine belt tensioner this involves also of course removing the serpentine belt these are both simple processes that you can do with commonly available tools I'm going to walk you through the
    process
on this car the first step is to remove the top torque strut or motor mount whatever you want to call it and this uh uh Mount is in the way of accessing the tensioner so let's go ahead and do that you just have three bolts with 14 mm heads I'm going to zip them off
this is an old engine that's sitting in the shop it's the same as the engine that's in the car and I've switched to it just to show you so you can get a clear visual you do not need to remove the engine from the car for this process this is just for demonstration purposes the tensioner has a nub right here it has 19 mm socket head you just slip the socket on it in the car and you pull toward you and this compresses the strut the damper strut of the tensioner and it allows you to remove the belt now the tensioner is bolted into the block with one long bolt that's right here and the damper arm it sits on a stud with just one nut these are both 14 mm and you can access them relatively easy in the
car so after loosening these bolts I've gone uh and removed the passenger side wheel and I'm loosened the top nut on this motor mount this is a 19 mm nut and it's on pretty tight and the reason that I've loosened it and removed it is so I can lift up the engine using a floor jack now I'm ready to lift up the engine so I take this floor jack with a wood block and I put it right under the oil pan then I lift up so that the engine mount is just at the top of the stud not much higher than that because then it might be become difficult to get it back on and when I do this the tensioner and the mounting bolt they wiggle right out through this Gap but if I didn't not lift up the engine then it would be impossible for this bolt this long bolt to clear installation is the reverse of removal you can see here how I've started the mounting bolt and I've also got the end of the damper strut onto the stud at the bottom and uh then I I can just drop the engine back back down and finish putting everything back together in case you needed I'm including a diagram showing the serpentine belt routing I'm including links to economy priced versions of this tensioner in the video description thank you for watching this video and see you the next time
