I bought a Barclay USA Archtop guitar with the f holes and a white pick guard on it that has Barclay imprinted on it. At a garage sale today. For $25. I have no idea what I bought? The old fellow selling it said it was from the 60s.

I have bunch of old music Instrument company/Dealer catalog /brochures that I’ve had for 35+ years. That old Kay I’m sure is in one of em. Some them old pre war Kay’s are pretty decent. I picked up a 1941’ Kay flattop 35 years ago in antique/junk store. It’s solid Mahogany/Spruce- killer Bottle neck Blues guitar. It helps to be a luthier’ when buying old acoustics-because yup-you can get yourself into a can worms

    Ey up there Ken,
A big hello from Derbyshire. I've just discovered your refreshingly down to earth videos.
In an effort to keep my crying towel dry, do you have any specific advice for a chap (me) meeting up with a Kalamazoo KG-21 in a car park?
I'm hoping to buy, but I reckon you'd be surprised by the prices these command here in the U.K. Ouch!
The guitar in question looks superb from initial photos.
    Footnote -
Charley (Charlie) Patton is THE MAN...

Hey there thanks for watching. My experience is that people who meet you with high-quality guitars in parking lots typically have other guitars and they don’t want people coming to their house and then suddenly there’s a break in mysteriously a few days later. When it comes to the guitar you’re talking about of course you want to look at the neck body junction. Do you want to shake it around a little bit to make sure that you don’t have loose bracing. Tap around the edges where the top and back meet the sides. Just tap your finger and look for tone variations as you tap and move inwards. See if there are unexplained additional holes where the tuners are or should be as they may have been changed. Finally, Make sure that the heel does not have checkmarks and superficial cracks because that is an indicator that something might be breaking loose. In the US that Guitar lists for somewhere between 1200 and 2500 US$. Oddly enough the vintage guitar 2021 price guide shows that guitar in good condition to range from US$775-US$1025. Send me an email I’ll give you a shout out on a future episode I’m doing about the price guide kpcbgs@gmail.com

but sometimes....if you are really lucky you get a gem in one of these and they sound great for what you play on them. More misses than hits by how they were treated throughout time .Have you ever come across a 1950's Stewart Oriphonic? Iv played decent early SS.Stewert.... Gibson made body. I've had great Kays and total wrecks. Everyone thinks they have a Gibson L5... or something of that high plateau. Cool Patton pressings....I didn't know Jack had done that for Charlie Pattons catalog. Some of my favorite blues players played these dept. store guitars.

i have two 1940s kay acoustics
both with good seals on the bindings & no cracks
tunes up (softer open chord tunings)
they wont be in heavy rotation - likely only the couple tracks in those specific keys
ladyfriend doesnt want to detune/retune durin the live set
