Great video Cody. That 51 ES-5….wow. Looks and sounds great. A real beauty. Congratulations. And I’d go with round wound strings personally. It will give the low end a great piano like sound.
I'm a Gretsch Man .... but the Big Gibson Archtops have always been something of a lure for me..... L-5, Super 400's and my fave the 1956 ES-5 . Love your Guitar and playing...you also now have a new Sub
Stringjoy makes great strings. I see that ask Zac already recommended the pure nickles and I second that motion. They’re what I use on my ‘64 6120 (12-52 w/ plain .20 3rd string) and I love them, they bring out the best in that guitar.
Hi Cody! Which strings did you end up with? I have a 51 ES-5 as well and am still looking for the "perfect" set - I play a bit of jazz and mostly jump blues and fingerstyle/travis picking. At the moment I have 11 roundwounds on the guitar which feel kinda wonky. In general the guitar doesn't sound too bright and I am also looking for a set of strings that add some brightness. BTW: interesting to see that your guitar already has the newer dogear covers and not the older bakelite types which are different in shape (rounder) and colour (darker shade of black). Greetings from Austria, Michael
I just checked it for markings, and I am coming up empty on a good answer for ya... It is a Gibson case -- that much would seem clear by the "Gibson" logo on it. However, it is definitely a more recent case. I am sorry I could not be more help. I wish I had a better answer.
Great job on the video, and what an incredible instrument. Def go round wound. String Joy pure nickel are what I would check out.
Thanks Zac! I think you are right - those are the way to go. Awesome stuff!
Man, what a great sounding guitar, congrats! Gotta love a store whose street sign is a "bigger than life" sized telecaster.
Yeah! I love seeing that giant tele as you pull closer. They really let you know what they’re about before you even get in the parking lot, haha.

Thank you, and thanks for the string feedback! That seems to be the generally consensus. I think you guys are right.

Thank you! I am incredibly happy with this old archtop!

what is the replacement case, do you know? I have a 51 ES5 that has what seems to be a 60s case that doesn't really fit it very well..
