Okay great video, my wife just called me and her 1996 850 Volvo won't start, I told her to get out lock the car wait a few minutes and try it it worked it's the alarm system might want to add that one
Thank you again Robert! Wow! Five reasons numbered in order all in one video. This is so awesome! Thank you again for being my go to man for my 1994 Volvo 850!
The lawnmower affect is 100% real. I experienced it myself today. I was replacing my odometer gear yesterday and had briefly started the car and shut it off. Today when I went out to start the car it started but stumbled then stalled. when I tried to restart it and the motor would not fire it sounded like it had no compression when turning over. I tested everything from spark to fuel and discovered I had both. I pulled out the spark plugs and poured a bit of oil down each cylinder and put the pedal to the floor and cranked it like crazy till it finally fired up. Thank you Robert, you are the Man!!!
I noticed that effect on my V70, but I could drive the car about two miles, and still have issues. Drive it half a mile more, no more starting problem! Weird or what? Never had that on any other car in all my 45 years of driving experience.
Tried just about everything including new fuel relay but intermittent stalling/ not starting/ running roughly, remained a problem. During a vist from the NZ Auto Assn the serviceman happened to start it first time! While running he touched the positive battery terminal which was loose and the the motor almost cut out. The terminal was loose. Appears that the bolt head and the nut both needed to be tightened to make a secure connection... Hey presto! Now starting and running like a dream.
That fuel pump relay was causing my 94 so many issues. Not starting. Starting barley and dying. Or the worst it died while driving. Thank God I was able to pull off to the side of the road. Installed the new relay and have had none of those issues since and have done at least 4-5k miles! Robert saved the day. Part was only about 35$! Just replace it! Side note I did break some of the plastic in the whole fuse box area and it was almost a nightmare trying to get the relay in. Praying I don't have to change any others in there lol
Hi Robert, this is very helpful information! I was about to investigate the cam sensor, now that I've established fuel pressure in the rail, but since I already know I have spark, I guess that eliminates the cam sensor. My next move is going to be the injector relay above the radiator. Thank you 💕
@@RobertDIY Me too.... I didn't find an injector relay on the radiator shroud, because it seems this model doesn't have one. Now, with a splash of fuel straight into the manifold, it starts up straight away and runs for about ten seconds and then dies. So spark is apparent, valve timing is good, compression is good, so it only leaves fuel. Looking at the fuel pump relay at component level reveals at least one out of spec capacitor, and one suspect, so tomorrow, I'll be borrowing a fuel pump relay just as a double check, but it's beginning to look to me like the injectors aren't firing. I think I might try my oscilloscope on the injector connectors to see if I can find a signal. They are fed at a constant battery voltage, and it looks like they are pulled low by the ECM to fire them. Beyond this, I'm going to need a fault code scanner, or call in the local garage mechanic.
Dang Robert...#5 bit me during a crank-no-start scenario. My '97 850 has 340k on it and it has suffered the lawn mower syndrome on a previous occasion. I quickly confirmed I had spark and good fuel pressure so I pulled the plugs and put in a little oil, no luck. I could smell gas and thought it might be flooded so I didn't really suspect #5 but tapped on the relay anyway. I did the tapping/start attempt several times but still no luck. I then took ohm readings on the cam and crank sensors and the idle air control valve... all in spec. Finally out of desperation I revisited #5 but this time did the tapping with the ignition on and bingo, it fired right up. It just did not occur to me to tap it with the ignition on but in retrospect it makes sense. Anyway, many thanks and by the way IPD VOLVO sells an aftermarket 3545803 for $14.
I always thought this rough starting issue after a 30 sec run was just my engine being worn out. Actually happened to me accidently a few times, now I know why, thanks! The old pre '95 Models seem to do that more often, I have a '94 with the old 103kw 10V engine.
I watched the video for 5 main reasons my 850 won’t start. Fuel pump has pressure. It started before I changed sensors without a problem. Appreciate any input you may have
I have a Number 6 for you.... Water in the gas. I checked spark, fuel pressure (40PSi), compression (4 around 200, 1 around 160), tried disconnecting the MAF, tried disconnecting the TPS. Confirmed the readings on the TPS using my Autel scanner. I tried your idea about the Lawn Mower Effect. I got it started once... it idled a while and then died after moving about 20 feet. No power at all. Would not start again. Plugs were wet but didn't smell much like gas. With plugs removed could not smell gas coming from the cylinders, Finally attached a hose to the fuel rail Schrader valve. Turned the key on and off a bunch of times since the fuel pump only comes on for a few seconds unless you're starting or running. I filled a pint pyrex measuring cup with a clear liquid that smelled only very faintly of gas. Then again. then a third time. I finally got something that smelled and looked like gas. Same color as water, but clearly a different viscosity. Hard to tell since gas isn't pink any more, but the smell was distinct. NOW I could smell gas from the cylinders. Car started right up after that. More than a pint of water. Yikes. Gas cap was on tight, so I doubt it was the car and condensation. I'm still waiting for a call back from the gas station that robbed me of two days of my life :) . By the way, YOU ARE THE MAN! I have learned soooooooooooooo much from you. I did the dash tabs on this car using your instructions, and lot of other things. So thank you thank you thank you for all your help.
Robert, you are da man! You have fixed my wife's 850 so many times and I need to thank you! Today it was the dreaded "lawnmower" problem. She moved the car in, then out a couple days ago, and today it wouldn't start - sounded like it was flooded. I put some oil in the cylinders, and it fired right up, and treated us to one heck of a smoke screen! Question - what can be done to avoid the "lawnmower" problem, or do we just need to drive around the block and warm it up good before pulling back in the garage? You rock!
I also has a very bad experience with the fuel injection relay. I got a PO120 code. i replaced the Throttle position sensor. Somehow the TPS and relay are on the same circuit, because the relay was the problem with intermittent stalling and no a start condition. To make things worse, the replacement brand new F.I.R was defective and would cut out on the highway, give me a P0120 code, after I reset the code, the car would run fine for a while and then repeated it until it finally died a year later. It was a very difficult problem to find. But surely it was the Fuel injection relay, because the car is running great now.
@@RobertDIY last night I drove to the Safeway 1 mile away and 850 would crank but not start when trying to come home. I walked home and returned to the car 90 minutes later, checked the injection relay, tapped on it, and it started. But the problem could have been lawnmower thing. Not sure. It’s also been raining a lot here lately. Anyway, thanks, and I hope your move is going well. Sorry Ohio didn’t work out.
I'm currently troubleshooting the following: 96 850 non turbo. All summer it starts just fine. Once it's below 50ish degrees outside, it will start momentarily (rpm up and then instead of dropping to idle after half a sec, it just dies. Then, if you keep cranking without turning off the key, it will not start again. If you turn it all the way off and try to start again, it will start exactly as it did the first time, then die. Repeat this 10 times or so and then it stays running. It's cold today, 48 degrees, but the sun was shining on the car and I tried it and it started normally.
@@RobertDIY THANK YOU!! For the great idea. I just did and the only one was 'P0300 random misfire'. The guy at O'Reilly's said it was 'stored'. I'm not familiar with ODB at all but if you have any ideas let me know, I really appreciate your help!!!
Hey you forgot when you think its the starter, replace it, hook the battery cable back up and low and behold it was the battery cable all along....lol...remember that Robert.
Hi Robert, I have an 850 that I believe is lawnmower locking all the time (once or twice a week) even after highway driving (car is a manual turbo tho so I do my best while driving it to keep the revs as low as they will smoothly go without dogging out, so it may not have exceeded 4000 revs in quite a while if that matters.) I haven't checked sensors or relays but i get a strong fuel smell from under the oil filler cap so I'm pretty sure that is the issue. I just replaced my spark plugs as they were somewhat fouled and I was going to do them anyway, however the car is now bricked and wont start at all. There is a lot of loose oil under my plastic engine cover that I assume is from the totally shot PCV that I just had replaced at a volvo shop. The shop did not replace the oil covered spark plugs or ignition coils when they did the PCV, which had gotten to the point it was on the verge of blowing my cam seals. What should my next move be as this car is my daily and I rely on it.
It's running SUPER rich. May need a temp sensor or something like that. Have you checked for codes or made sure all of the vacuum lines and piping are good?
@@RobertDIY I actually did some more testing and found that my engine will spark right at first but then will immediately cut out the spark after the first few sparks leading me to suspect the cam sensor may have been damaged by the bad PCV leaking all over it. It has for sure lawnmower locked before so I believe that you are correct about the running rich. The previous owner swore up and down that the car managed a dyno run at 284bhp and having driven the car hard a couple times I believe him. Without any obvious modifications to the engine or turbo I would guess he managed most of that with a pretty aggressive tune. I live in CO though so running rich is fairly common so who knows though. On a side note I just realized that my idle air controller is unplugged and makes a constant grinding noise when plugged in so perhaps that could be affecting my idle mix.
hello Robert greetings from Argentina, I have a volvo S70. Sometimes it starts and sometimes it doesn't, but if I push it it always starts. If you can help me, there are not many spare parts here and they do not want to repair this type of car. greetings, you are a genius
@@RobertDIY The car always started fast, two weeks ago it started to cost him, but he started and now I know that it will not start, when the starter turns very slowly and on the second attempt it does nothing. when I push the car it starts and the starter turns normal again for a few days. the battery is in good condition
I would like to add one reason. Because a bad ignition switch by where the key turns The key hole is on the right side the ignition switch is on the left side It also effects the turn blinkers and head light from turning on ( if you have to wiggle the key backwards alittle once it start after a million tries the lights and turn signals work try it)
My 850 didn't start because I didn't replace the timing belt so when it broke, so did the engine. Womp womp. But that's ok, it was a 92 and I'll eventually get around to getting another one.
Hey Robert. Where is the starter located in a 2003 volvo s40 1.9T. I see no information on youtube about it. Recently I replaced my transmission and I feel they left the starter bolts loose. Since I found few nuts around the tranny.
First of all, thanks for all the great videos you have! Helped me with a lot of maintenance to my volvo v70r 1998. There is however 1 problem I can't find a fix for. I do not have any warning lights, or any fault codes. But my volvo has a bad cold start, where it will crank for 6 to 10 seconds before it runs. No matter the weather (-10° or 30°C, always the same issue), when the engine is warm, it will start perfectly every time. Have you got any idea? Thanks in advance!
@@RobertDIY, I wanted to update you on my progress, so you can use the tip to. You were right at the beginning, because it did involve the ETC sensor . After a lot of searching I've found the issue. The wires of the ETC ran just a bit to close to the alternator, what caused the problem. I've zip tied them up to the powersteering hose, and that solved my starting issue, now it starts right up. Thanks again and keep up the great work you do!
I hope this is the correct place to post a question. I have 99 V70 2.4 turbo. Last week I broke the upper coolant tube and sprayed coolant all over. After I got the car home and replaced the tube I tried to start it. The engine turns over but no compression on all 5 cylinders. I tried several of your suggestions, good fuel, timing belt OK and spark plugs OK. What else can I try to fix this?
Hi Mr Robert l have a problem with my Volvo S60 l put the crank on mark, camshafts on marks with timing tool but l couldn't start it after doing all that l removed the fuel rail all injectors was spraying fuel l tested the coil packs with a spark plug on it l was using top cover to get negative l couldn't get a spark at all please kindly help me what could be the reason of a spark not to show up
I don't understand what problem you're having. Are you saying that you have no spark? Why did you pull the fuel injectors? What job were you trying to do? Just a timing belt replacement?
@@RobertDIY Good morning Mr Robert l was doing the cylinder head l was given that Volvo and the owner told me that he drove it but it wasn't having power then he took it to other mechanic they changed a fuel pump and a cooling sensor and still the car didn't start that's when l was visited to my workshop so l checked l found out that the engine was having issues on over heating so l removed it and took it to engineering l got it back and put it setting timing but the issue now it's not giving a spark that's my challenge taking out fuel rail l wanted to see if l am getting fuel from injectors definitely l got fuel on injectors but spark is my problem l tested camshaft sensor with a multimeter l got the data but when l tested crankshaft sensor l didn't get data on those 2 wires so now l am not sure where the problem is? no spark on spark plugs that's the issue now
Robert, brother my 850 is cranking and seldomly it will fire however fail to start. The fuel rail has pressure. I’m thinking that it’s losing its spark, I tap on the sensor as suggested and then it will not even seldomly fire. I’ve checked the battery connections and basically everything you’ve suggested. I get frustrated and leave it for a bit. Return and it will fire again but not start. I need help brother . This wagon is killing me.
Got one of these free, replaced fuel sending unit and got pressure, has spark, didn't notice the puff of gas gonna check that fuel relay. I do here a buzz sound under hood that I assumed was fuel related but who knows I'm a Jeep guy
Mr. Robert, what is that silver cylinder with hoses under the throttle thing? When my 850 won't start, it's because that hose popped right off on top. I want to get a new one. Thank you for your awesome videos!
I got a problem with the starter engaging the flywheel but dropping off before the engine has started. Causing the starter to rev without load. I wonder what replacements I need to fix the starter. Solenoid the bendix on that starter? What could cause the starter to engage and disengage
I'm having a slow cold start issue on my 98 v70. It starts but cranks forever before finally starting. Once started and warmed up, it will then start no problem. I've replaced the fuel pump, the fuel filter, the fuel pump relay, the vac purge valve, the spark plugs, the plug wires, cleaned the throttle body, and i replaced the coolant temp sensor. Could it be fuel pressure regulator? Maybe cam sensor? Also it is coding on PO410. could a vac leak cause slow cold start?
How long is forever? ECT and cam old sensors are usually what causes long cranks. You can also have low compression due to a rich condition causing it.
@@RobertDIY Replaced coolant sensor... but not cam sensor. Has new fuel pump, new filter, new relay, new MAF, new O2 sensors. It takes about 5 to 10 minutes of trying to start it for it to finally catch and fire up. current for is 410. I've heard it can also be the throttle sensor or the cam sensor. It also has new plugs and wires but not a new distributor. It could also be bad connector on the ECT. One side is broken. It's connected but the plastic casing was damaged. I cleaned connection and put dielectric grease on it. I'm wondering it the vacuum issue might be causing pressure regulator to fail?
Hey Robert, working on a 95 na 850 wagon. was running fine then wouldn't start one day. Replaced the fuel pump relay and still nothing. Put a battery booster on and it started. Then realized the battery was old so got a new battery and ran fine for a day, started several times okay. Next day it's back to just cranking and no sign of starting. Any ideas what to check next? Thanks
Robert, please help! My 97 Volvo won’t start. I have checked the relay, the fuel pump. There is fuel at the rail. I drove it in extreme cold and the throttle cable got stuck and I had to turn it out in gear. Started 2 times after that but now cranks but no start. I’m at my wits end.
Thanks bro, i have a 245 bf motor, 2,3 liter, year91 no spark, no fuelpumpaction....i guess i dont have camsensor, can that be? I already changed the crankshaftsensor....
My 850 has an immobilizer thingy that does not work and the dip stick smell a bit like fuel. Not sure what to do with the immobilizer that has a separate plastic key.
Hi Robert, fault on my 850 r when i turn it over i have to turn it over for a while and gradually it starts to fire on a couple of cylinders and then gradually runs and ticks over ok but has no power to move itself as though there is enough fuel to tick over only. I have changed the fuel puump relay, but have been told it could be a blocked fuel filter, a bad petrol pump a fuel pressure reg, or the reostat on the throttle. I dont know where to start, any suggestions, i have always followed your videos but this problem has me beat
@@RobertDIY I've checked the fuel --OK. I've checked the spark --OK. I've checked the compression. I have one cylinder -15psi, another cylinder -5, and two cylinders at 120psi -- this is for a s740. I assume the psi for these should be 120? But the thing won't start again. My mom stalled out just before she arrived to my house the other day. Then, it started back up after several minutes, enough for her to pull into my driveway. From what I have read and seen, have I exhausted all possibilities except the relay? I'm now at the point where I need to get access to the relays but I can't figure out how to take the casing out, above the ash tray.
My car turns over but wont start. Tried the "lawnmower syndrome" scenario but it didn't fix it. I do smell fuel so I think fuel must be getting to the cylinders.1995 Volvo 850 GLE...Any suggestions?
I have a s60 volvo and it will run then while your driving it will cut off. It will start back up and then do the same thing over again. What could be the problem
Hey Robert. My '96 850 will not start every week or so. I turn the key, and then everything electrical dies (the clock goes blank, etc.), it acts like the battery is disconnected, and turning the ignition does nothing (no crank), no lights, nothing. If I unplug the negative terminal of the battery and plug it back in, then start the iginition again, everything starts up and runs great. Any ideas? This happens randomly, maybe every 10 starts or so and only unplugging/reconnecting the battery makes everything work again.

Hello Robert. I change the fuel pump and relay but my problem continue. My volvo 850 only start on second try( on second try always perfect!) when is off more than +-1h. If i start and try again in next 30minutes is perfect. Solutions? Thank you.
Hey Robert! I picked up an 02 c70 hardtop with a t5. This will be my 6th p80. The car won’t rev over 4K rpm. I’m thinking it’s an etm problem. No cel, but the alternator is bad and she’s only putting out about 10v. Your thoughts?
I’m thinking about converting my c70 from etm to a cable throttle. Besides changing the TB , running cable and Ecu cartridge, will it require any other mods?
Hey Robert, my 1996 850 will crank for a long time before starting, it usually takes three tries to start it and it runs fine, not sure what it is. any ideas?
@@RobertDIY i think its even worse, the car was cranking, the next day it stopped cranking, charged up the battery, put it in, still cranks, checked the spark plugs 3 of 5 are covered in oil
@@RobertDIY Could be. Its been just going around here in Finland that valves are sticky and not closing making the loss of compression. "on the 850 models, is that the hydraulic tappets do not close properly when the engine is switched off. Oil gets behind them stopping them from closing fully"
I just wanna admit personally hard to believe fuel making cylinder to lose compression but i believe you in that (not saying here you are wrong here at all!) as you have good experience (and i still not) and i have read threads too people going around believing of it after testing or facing issue itself. Sorry but i guess i was wrong too about valves being responsible of it.
I’ve had 5 Volvo’s and never had a bad battery cable - not sure that should be in the top 5 - as well - I find the coolant temperature sensor is something that commonly fails and can create a very hard start or none at all with a poorly tuned car!
Robert DIY BTW I love your channel and am a subscriber and you have helped me through quite a few things - thank you - I am pretty much a Volvo guy myself so I thought you might respect the input and keep rolling - 1989 760 Turbo Wagon - 1996 Turbo and A Platinum Edition - 1998 R and my 1998 XC which I just finished rebuilding from the ground up - you’d love it!👍
Hopefully I can get my car to start I replaced the spark plugs and we flushed the transmission it ran two day then never turned back over the alternator is changed and maybe I didn't fully charge battery but tried to get jump start and no luck
My 850 Volvo will not say anything you can turn on the ignition switch the fan comes on the emergency flashers goes to flashing but car will not make any noise not trying to crank you won't hear anything you just turning the switch and you hear nothing what could be the problem had to give it a boost off for days ago now try to crank won't say anything won't make any noise when she turn on the switch Jeff hazard lights flashing and the fan stays on had to unplug the fan to keep from running battery down
@@RobertDIY it turns over but doesn't start. Guy who owns it says it's the crank but I don't think it is. What do you think. I asked if he checked to see if it has spark and fuel and checked the relays just waiting for a text back.

There is video of symptoms: th-cam.com/video/_ZaZ6hmW1jk/w-d-xo.html When i turn key to start engine, his can do some rotatation (more often - not at all) i hear JUST a car starter work, and when i release the key, i hear the solenoid relay returning. Can it be the result of a bad wire (one of your "reasons")? (Volvo 850, 1995, B5254FS) P.S. Sorry for my english, I hope I could convey my thought.
@@RobertDIY no, no. It's happens with any fuel. Increase the volume of the video to hear what is happening. I turn the key, the starter turns on and turns, I hear the crankshaft spinning and at the one moment everything turns off and audibly, as only the starter rotates, until I release the key.

Man, that would be so far down the list it's a shame. Glad you got it going. The going rate for getting water out of a tank is about $1100.
Hi Robert! Usefull information as always! thx
Glad it was helpful!
Thanks, hope I don't need to. Just got one, been sitting gonna be proactive with common failures.
cool
Robert, you are da man! You have fixed my wife's 850 so many times and I need to thank you! Today it was the dreaded "lawnmower" problem. She moved the car in, then out a couple days ago, and today it wouldn't start - sounded like it was flooded. I put some oil in the cylinders, and it fired right up, and treated us to one heck of a smoke screen! Question - what can be done to avoid the "lawnmower" problem, or do we just need to drive around the block and warm it up good before pulling back in the garage? You rock!
Always let the engine run for at least 1 minute before you turn the car off.
Wow, thanks for sharing.
Thanks Robert! I'm adding all these parts to my stage 0 tune.
Perfect!
No, lawnmower syndrome will not go away with time. Also does NOT happen on a warm engine, only cold engine.
It's cold today, 48 degrees, but the sun was shining on the car and I tried it and it started normally.
have you read codes?
@@RobertDIY THANK YOU!! For the great idea. I just did and the only one was 'P0300 random misfire'. The guy at O'Reilly's said it was 'stored'. I'm not familiar with ODB at all but if you have any ideas let me know, I really appreciate your help!!!
Thanks. Will give them a try, despite the lousy weather. :-)

Yea man. lol
Hey you forgot when you think its the starter, replace it, hook the battery cable back up and low and behold it was the battery cable all along....lol...remember that Robert.
In the church parking lot? Of course I do. lol
When it fails to start, is it cranking?
@@RobertDIY The car always started fast, two weeks ago it started to cost him, but he started and now I know that it will not start, when the starter turns very slowly and on the second attempt it does nothing. when I push the car it starts and the starter turns normal again for a few days. the battery is in good condition
I would like to add one reason.
Because a bad ignition switch by where the key turns
The key hole is on the right side
the ignition switch is on the left side
It also effects the turn blinkers and head light from turning on
( if you have to wiggle the key backwards alittle once it start after a million tries the lights and turn signals work try it)
🙃
thanks Robert that’s very helpful.

Fuel injector relay! Forgot about that one. I've ordered another and just taken the cover off the existing one to re-dress the contacts.
Ok
My 850 didn't start because I didn't replace the timing belt so when it broke, so did the engine. Womp womp. But that's ok, it was a 92 and I'll eventually get around to getting another one.
That'll be #9.

What else can I try to fix this?
if compression is low, I'd put oil in the spark plug holes.

Got one of these free, replaced fuel sending unit and got pressure, has spark, didn't notice the puff of gas gonna check that fuel relay. I do here a buzz sound under hood that I assumed was fuel related but who knows I'm a Jeep guy

I don't know, you'd have to google it or ask someone who repairs starters. I would simply replace the stater.
I've also replaced the MAF sensor and both O2 sensors.
I'm wondering it the vacuum issue might be causing pressure regulator to fail?
current code is po410
Hey Robert, working on a 95 na 850 wagon. was running fine then wouldn't start one day. Replaced the fuel pump relay and still nothing. Put a battery booster on and it started. Thanks
Is it missing spark?
Robert, please help! My 97 Volvo won’t start. I have checked the relay, the fuel pump. There is fuel at the rail. I drove it in extreme cold and the throttle cable got stuck and I had to turn it out in gear. Started 2 times after that but now cranks but no start. I’m at my wits end.

Thanks bro, i have a 245 bf motor, 2,3 liter, year91 no spark, no fuelpumpaction....i guess i dont have camsensor, can that be? I already changed the crankshaftsensor....
If the distributor is on the back of the cam, it could be the sensor in there.

My guess would be that it has a bad ECT. It's probably trying to idle extremely rich.
th-cam.com/video/NhtUXZTurzo/w-d-xo.html
Does the engine have to be turning over in order to check the voltage at the injectors or does the key just need to be on?
Injectors only fire when engine is turning.

@@RobertDIY Could be. Its been just going around here in Finland that valves are sticky and not closing making the loss of compression. "on the 850 models, is that the hydraulic tappets do not close properly when the engine is switched off. Oil gets behind them stopping them from closing fully"
