  • How to wire up LED lights on a Polaris Ranger so they don't come on until you are in reverse. If you don't use a relay you lights will be on slightly all the time.

    Great tutorial man. I'm planning to use a couple of 4" LED bars as reverse lights and combo them as rear working lights. Your explanation of how their reverse light system works with the relay was exactly what I needed and even utilizes that constant hot post.
    In case anyone is interested, here's what I just tested that works like a champ:
    1. Accessory hot wire to post 30 on the relay
    2. Reverse positive to post 85
    3. Reverse negative to post 86
    4. Post 87a (Constant hot) to the input power of your "Rear Lights" switch
    5. The light's positive lead will be wired to both the switch's output and the relay post 87
    6. The switch and the light will both be grounded to the battery.
    With this I can use the console switch to turn on the "Rear Lights", or placing the transmission into "reverse" will switch them on. Good stuff.

    Can you show the final install how you mounted the lights and the wires? Nice start explaining the Polaris wiring. Thanks

    I ordered a weatherproof relay, but noticed that my wires aren't labeled the same as yours and I need a little help if you can
    87...yellow...open circuit
    86...white...switch
    30...blue...battery
    85...black...ground
    87a(center wire)...constant
    I'm confused as to which wires on the relay I hook up to the wires to the battery and then which wires from the relay to the 2 wires on the factory harness.

    Great video. What wire on the lights does the blue wire from the relay go to? How do you ground it?

    • @sm19058
      @sm19058 3 ปีที่แล้ว +1

      Red/Black relay wires to red Polaris wire; White relay wire to black Polaris wire, Blue relay wire to light red wire. Black light wire MUST be grounded to a bolt or it won't work. I didn't ground initially and thought I had a bad relay until I grounded the black light wire. Yellow wire just gets covered unless you want constant power somewhere else.

    On a related subject, do the tinted tail lights you installed earlier have reflectors in them? I have the un-tinted version of these and they don't reflect light like the oem Polaris lights do. So, I will have to put a couple of strips of reflective tape on each side of the tail gate. Also, there is no reflectors on the side of the lenses either. I cut strips of reflective tape to fit the sides also. Otherwise they look and fit great! They were about half the price of the oem Polaris lenses.

    • @mossman381
      @mossman381  4 ปีที่แล้ว

      I don't think mine has reflectors either.

    I want to do the same thing. But I do have some questions.
    Do you have ground the lights?
    Where did you attach the ground from the relay?
    Did you put any silicone or something like that on the connections?
    What did you use to crimp the connections?
    Where did you get the connections?
    Sorry for so many questions. But I want to do it right.
    Oh, and what gauge wire did you use?

    • @sm19058
      @sm19058 3 ปีที่แล้ว

      Yes I had to ground the lights or it doesn't work. I grounded up to the honeycomb metal frame to test it and will likely move under bed to protect from mud/water better. I mounted two pods and they work great.

    • @mossman381

      Pretty sure it's a switched constant hot but you can easily check with a test light to make sure. It will also stay on for a few minutes after the machine is shut off.

    How much power comes from the backup wires? Thinking of wiring a small light bar for backup lights

    • @mossman381
      @mossman381  3 ปีที่แล้ว +1

      You could run a really small light bar. If you run the backup lights with a relay like I show in the video you could get positive power from the battery instead of the wire going to the backup light switch. Then you could run whatever light you wanted.

    So as I mentioned in an earlier post I tried to follow your tutorial instructions and the lights are on with and without key when in reverse. I wired it - #30&85 to UTV red / 86 to UTV blue / 87 to LED red / grounded LED blk. Where did I go wrong?

    • @mossman381

    I’m gonna try this today. Yesterday I just took a LED light bar and hooked it directly to the harness. My problem is when the key is in accessory mode and machine is in Reverse, light is bright. When the machine is on and put in reverse, the light dims and flickers with RPMS. Hoping this with fix the issue….

      @regdodd3683 3 ปีที่แล้ว

      Yes, my Polaris Dealer said they do. But he couldn't tell me where I would find it and whether it was a 2 wire or 3 wire terminal (same as bus bar)?

    • @regdodd3683

      He also wasn't able to tell me if it was off the reverse mode and/or if needed a relay?

    • @mossman381
      @mossman381  3 ปีที่แล้ว

      It's going to be a two wire connector. Probably not the same as the bus bar. It will be towards the rear because it's really meant for a backup alarm. I would use a relay because I have heard of people having problems using it for a backup light without a relay.
