@@PurpleColonel It says on the steam page it's Barney. That's not something that was introduced later either, it was advertised as Barney Calhoun when it released in 2001, so they didn't retroactively change it to connect it with the Half-Life 2 character.

Now this is an old question. I also would think that the scientist that goes "My god, what are you doing?" is Magnusson. There is no way Magnusson is that petty that mid-catastrophe, he noticed his casserole was exploded and was told Gordon did it and was petty enough to hold a 20 year grudge about that, right? I'll also add that this vid's philosophical question at the end is pretty fitting for HL as a series.
Ha, I always thought how did Magnusson hear about the casserole so it makes more sense that he was the one sitting there. I also assumed Magnusson was the Slick scientist, not Einstein.
I remember Laidlaw said in an email that Magnusson is the Einstein at the test chamber airlock. Whether you consider his correspondence canon or not is up to you.
4:21 Blue shift takes place in black mesa. his job. Its just more professional to call someone by their last name regardless of role when your working with them. Half life 2 having barney be called barney is because they aren't in that professional environment anymore they don't have to say his last name. he's just barney. 1:35 well Eli said the last time he saw Gordon was when he sent him up for help, and the only scientist who fits the bill is the one we see after the resonance cascade
I don't think he was saying he was based on the Einstein model, he was saying that Magnusson's character was based on a character who used the Einstein model. They probably based Magnusson's HL2 appearance on the slick model because they thought it would be more fitting.
Considering how much Eli and Kleiner know about the resonance cascade and the xen tests, I don't think its nostalgia baiting, but just logical to say they were the two scientists in that room like Black Mesa does.
Laidlaw's said that he was one of the scientists in the test chamber airlock though, and the Slick there dies. So the only option is to assume either that Marc is full of shit or, more likely, that he is an Einstein.
@@AlphaGarg More likely, Marc is full of shit then. The Einsteins in HL1 very obviously look way older than Magnusson does in HL2 twenty years later and his design is obviously based on a Slick.
10:45 i thought "in the barrel" means Gordon is a bullet ready to be fire, just waiting for the pull of the trigger. Idk why i thought that, just sounded plausible.
No one belives Eli is that one HL1 scientist because of the strategy guide. It's because of the first line he says to Gordon when you meet in person. The Prima guide only backs it up, since a lot of those were written with help from the original developers. I know it's pretty common to find cut content in those things.
Kleiner being there in Black Mesa doesnt seem like a big stretch when you put in consideration the g4oup photo Kleiner has in HL2 which has him and a bunch of scientists (Gordon and Eli Included) posing infront of the Anomalous Materials lab lobby. Even if he wasnt that exact scientist, he would have most definetly have taken part of the experiment, and there arent much scientists left alive after that so i think the guys who made black mesa did their homework before makong that decision
in hl2 eli confirms that he told gordon to get up to the surface so the luthor model is confirmed to be him, and i think that kleiner is also there in the same room because he gets to study the trapped headcrab which shows up as lammar and they're seen as good friends in hl2 therefore those 2 are, atleast in my opinion, the characters we know and love
from what I remember: "In a barrel today" means something like you're in a the barrel today.. Not a dirty joke, but means something along the lines of: "It's your turn to do this stupid/unpleasant task."
@@BetterOnichThanSorry Honest from what I think it could really just vary from the tasks/things to do.. But yeah I just remembered the saying although I wouldn't necessarily know what it was ORIGINALLY intending that's all
If someone was in the HEV suit, you could definitely assume they’re “in the barrel” in the other sense too. Gordon is doing the other scientists dirty work and that’s what happens every time someone straps and HEV suit on in this series, Decay, the sequels, even those research members in Xen. So in a way, you’re kind of right. Every time someone puts on an HEV suit they’re metaphorically stepping into the barrel.
This conundrum is why I like how Black Mesa did it in this case. The security guard who opens the door on the train for you will say something like “Hey, catch me later. Me, you and Barney can go get that beer he owes you.” A new player will still get the reference in Half-Life 2 and the real Barney remains the one in Blue Shift.
All the Barney merge into one after the real Barney leaves the facility, gaining the knowledge, strength and bravery. Becoming the strongest character in the half life universe, where Barney fist fights the Gman gaining his abilities and power. After he brings down the combine by creating a unlimited amount of beer into the combine over world drowning them, and ending the combine’s rule
1:03 That theory actually comes from a line that Eli Vance says in Half-Life 2 “now let's see the last time I saw you I set you up for help after the resonance Cascade I never thought I would take you this long to get back to me” Pretty well inciting that the scientists with the Luther model who teaches you how to get the scientists to follow you to use the eye scanner was in fact Eli Vance
Maybe the "Catch me later I'll buy you a beer" might be an inside joke between the guards and the science staff, so they probably say it all the time after some occurrence. To which Barney says it to Gordon in HL2 as a quick identification, because only Black Mesa personnel would remember such a thing.
I simply gotta assume it's the Blue Shift one. It might be boring, but the name thing, the fact that we know he escaped, and that it gives him a cool backstory. I don't see any reason not to see Blue Shift as canon either. I think it's important to take into consideration that Gordon may know multiple security guards and has known them before the start of HL1. While it may all mean that Gordon never interacts with the real Barney in Half-Life 1, I'm fine with that. Interesting analysis though! :D
magnusson canNOT be that one einstain, magnusson himself told freeman that if the rocket will be launched successfully, then he'll forgive him for that meal gordon exploded in microwave
I think that he says "looks like you're in the barrel" because in italian he says "sembra che sei in una botte di ferro" (looks like you're in a Iron barrel). He talks about the suit!
Eli specifically says in HL2, "I haven't seen you since I sent you up get help, back at Black Mesa." That Npc tell you to get help after the RC.That specific npc is indeed Eli
Barney in HL2 says "Just like old times, eh Gordon?" So it is probably the one you meet once you exit the elevator. Edit: I missed my main point, if he says it was like old times, they must have fought together.
The Barney outside the elevator, probably escaped to surface and was one of the guards we found outside, maybe the one surrounded by rubble rigth before the Gargantua.
But by that point you aren't shooting guns or fighting enemies with guns. That voiceline from HL2 is just an easter egg, reading into it just makes things worse.
The area through the airlock that you can access after the resonance cascade where you said the extra Barneys probably came through is most likely the Sector B Coolant Reserve
@@vasikdlabal8252 the point of neglecting the “answer” is to theory craft and make funny and cool assumptions based on the facts presented. if that’s too hard to understand for you, go outside!!
You actually don't have to do that on youtube, really. But if I were to stretch a video it'd either be to get it to 8 minutes (min length for midrolls) or like, 20+ minutes to justify an excessive number of midrolls.
my headcanon is that the HL2 Barney is Blue Shift's Barney, both have the same full name, and the other security guards we see in Half-Life and the expansions seem like they're not very likely to get out alive, additionally we see Blue Shift's Barney get out of Black Mesa. that's pretty much all of my reasoning for Blue Shift Barney.
1:24 The hunter/strider thing actually has more validity then you would think. In episode one the model of the gray striders chasing moseman where labeled as "ministriders" in the files. It was in most likely hood just a placeholder name but i could definitely see some overworked prima writer preping with ep1 while waiting for ep2s release and making a connection.
Honestly I’d think the Barney at the door in the intro is the real one. I’d like to think the expansions are canon since from what I know the combine are completely new in HL2 and having race Xen in opposing forces implies there are many different types of aliens.
1:08 Eli mentions in the black mesa east chapter of HL2 that last time he saw Gordon was when he send him to the surface to get help the scientist here tells Gordon to get help, aka, he is Eli
The reason Barney is referred to by his last name in Blue Shift is because he's a security guard. In real life, most security companies refer to their officers by their last name like police and military do.
1:00 bro, in half life 2 Eli Vance literally says in the game that last time he saw gordon he told him to go find help on the surface, and that is the npc in half life 1 that says those words, i don't know what you're on about saying there's no official source
Calhoun from Blue Shift never offered Gordon a beer. The real Barney has the be the guard who offered Gordon a beer. Even if Blue Shift was canon, the only possible conclusion from that would be that Calhoun is Barney's brother.
The actual barney is the very first barney you encounter. Once you get off the tram if you interact with this barney barney will say. "Come see me later and I'll buy you a beer" then in half life two after barney reveals he's barney he says "about that beer I owed ya" this concludes that the first barney you encounter in half life 1 is the barney you meet in hl2
4:19 I worked in a private security company and always during work time we call each other with the last name. Outside job well, idk I just worked there 2 weeks before a supermarket company called me lol
1:03 Actually it is not just raising the bar. Eli Vance says a voice line in Half-Life 2 when you first meet him that is a direct reference to a voice line from this specific scientist. The HL1 scientist says "You have to get to the surface and let someone know we are stranded down here". Eli says when you meat him: "When I sent you for help, I did not expect it would take you so long, to get back to me.". It is pretty much obviously implied directly in the games, that this specific scientist is Eli Vance.

All Barney's in HL1 are the same person running really fast
Now this is an old question.
I also would think that the scientist that goes "My god, what are you doing?" is Magnusson.
There is no way Magnusson is that petty that mid-catastrophe, he noticed his casserole was exploded and was told Gordon did it and was petty enough to hold a 20 year grudge about that, right?
I'll also add that this vid's philosophical question at the end is pretty fitting for HL as a series.
Ha, I always thought how did Magnusson hear about the casserole so it makes more sense that he was the one sitting there. I also assumed Magnusson was the Slick scientist, not Einstein.
mayybe gordons just a pranker like tha!!

Either that or the barney we see in half life 2 is just barney the dinosaur in a costume

Blue shift Calhoun can't be the real Barney, as he never offered Gordon a beer. Barney Calhoun has to be the guard who offered Gordon a beer.
@@lordlammi1562 We only saw a single like normal 30 minutes of one day at black mesa, and Gordon was late. You think they never ever interacted any other day? Obviously Barney must have offered it to Gordon literally any other day. They both worked there for more than just that day.

Never have I ever heard someone say Magnusson is the Einstein model, I only ever heard people say he was the Slick model
I don't think he was saying he was based on the Einstein model, he was saying that Magnusson's character was based on a character who used the Einstein model. They probably based Magnusson's HL2 appearance on the slick model because they thought it would be more fitting.
I always figured the "you're in the barrel today" joke was referring to the fact that freeman was late, and potentially a step closer to being fired.

The one that tells you he’ll get you a beer first
No one belives Eli is that one HL1 scientist because of the strategy guide.
9:23 why is he getting absolutely grilled 😭🙏
Bro has personal beef with this one
"He's a nerd... he couldn't survive another 20 years in an alien apocalypse"
...Kleiner? Eli? Magnusson?
Ah well.
In other languages, that line about the barrel is replaced with "It seems like you're the main character today" so maybe that's what he means
That line is... weirdly meta and ahead of its time, wow
Kinda feels like a precursor to the jokes about avoiding being twitter’s main character of the day
Blue Shift and Opposing Force are canon until Valve themselves specify otherwise.
in hl2 eli confirms that he told gordon to get up to the surface so the luthor model is confirmed to be him, and i think that kleiner is also there in the same room because he gets to study the trapped headcrab which shows up as lammar and they're seen as good friends in hl2 therefore those 2 are, atleast in my opinion, the characters we know and love
I think Kleiner being with Eli was probably mainly done because they were close friends, so showing them working together would make sense.
from what I remember: "In a barrel today" means something like you're in a the barrel today.. Not a dirty joke, but means something along the lines of: "It's your turn to do this stupid/unpleasant task."
What do you think that "stupid/unpleasant tank" originally was?
A lot of common sayings come from the Navy, so it makes sense this is the origin.
@@BetterOnichThanSorry Honest from what I think it could really just vary from the tasks/things to do.. But yeah I just remembered the saying although I wouldn't necessarily know what it was ORIGINALLY intending that's all
9:58 I'm 99% sure Barney is just referring to the HEV suit as a barrel
I think the specific line references Barney "not being here today", which explains that Barney is likely off doing something else at the time.
