INSECURITY [SFM]

- Barney Calhoun, hired as a security agent at Black Mesa Research Facility in New Mexico, is going at work like usual. Except that this day won't be like the others.
I made this shortfilm on SFM based on Half-Life Blue Shift as nobody ever did an animation focused on Barney when he was working for Black Mesa's security. It was an opportunity to realise a work for all who consider Blue Shift as a wonderful Half-Life expansion. Barney deserves his own film too!
I couldn't imagine finishing that titanic life project after one year and seven months of work, and it's thanks to your comments and the incredible view count on INCOMING [SFM] that INSECURITY can see the light of day. Without you, that project would never exists, and I thank all of you very much ❤️
I keep continue to get SFM animations on Half-Life Expansions.

I can't believe of much effort you put into this, you've done an amazing job man. You deserve many more subscribers!
Funny seeing you here
Normally I never say this in any comment but why the actual hell are you here
Your one of the last I thought I'd see here
Hello, pony dude
WHERE THE HELL IS JOSH AND WHAT DID YOU DO TO HIM?
I do love how when the Scientists are having a mechanical failure with an Elevator, instead of calling for Facilities/Maintenance, they call for Security.
Literally how it be though.
Makes sense in game, as the maintenance staff were overwhelmed
yeah... or like their security staff are their IT guys
Half life orange shift when
When blue shift came out the guards were supposed to fulfill the role of maintenance personnel
Can we just admire the pure undefeated smirk Barney always has.
You ever worked security? Sometimes forcing a smirk or laughing spontaneously at nothing at all is all one can do you get through a shift. You need a _"I'm going to eat shit today and not only will I like it, I'll thank my superior and ask for second helpings!"_ kind of attitude. Barney's better than most guards I've met though; the negative ones tend to eat optimists like him alive.
@@Mr.Ambrose_Dyer_Armitage_Esq. Damn, is working security really that bad?
@@Gravity_studioss
In California? Yes.
@@Mr.Ambrose_Dyer_Armitage_Esq. there's no point griping on an optimist, you're basically pulling everyone down.

Barney looks too happy for someone starting a work shift.
Helloooo Endo)))
@@gahler8552 oh hi!
You never work a day in your life if you love your work!
Well he does get to have a gun as part of his shift
To be fair, working as a Black Mesa guard doesn’t seem too bad
If you don’t take into account of the Black Mesa incident
07:27
"HAHA! Looks like I'm not the only one late for work! SUCKER!!!!"
A man of culture I see.
Yes my friend, you are definitely not alone :D
I love how well this sells Black Mesa as a setting. It’s a city sized facility full of thousands of employees, and places to accommodate them. The day of the cascade just feels like one of those regular unlucky days where nothing seems to be going correctly, something we’ve all felt before. Then it all goes to hell before anybody even gets a moment to assess what’s happening
Black Mesa Research Facility is my favourite video game setting ever.
Black Mesa Research Facility is my favourite video game setting ever.
@@thiagovidal6137 yeah same
I really like how busy you've made Black Mesa feel. Not just scientists and guards but janitors, technicians, and administrative folks. It really brings the facility to life!
Thats the power of a mod called ‘BMCE’ and ‘BMCE:R’
This Is now an game An FAN game due to Valves fail of half life source
Hell gwah brother
A dream of a perfect day ar work if you ask me
@@oldrichhorsky1707 This is an official Valve game, not made by a fan
Fun Fact: If the facility had better maintnance then the elvetor wouldn't fall down, as the retroactive systems would kick in and slow it to a halt.
Black Mesa definitely has priority issues, there are plenty of emergency systems that work way too well, or doesnt work at all.
@@DrSabot-AI get the “doesn’t work at all” but where does it work too well? I’m assuming you’re talking about the blast doors?
@@OneFreeMan17 The blast doors that traps personnel, yea. The sprinkler systems that still work even when the building is being bombarded and half destroyed in Surface Tension, and the waste processing equipment that's still operating and ends up shooting flames and toxic sewage everywhere
@DrSabot-A under the emergency, the system was set to automatically cycle to repeat task until stopped manually, but everyone died and it tried finishing task before failure occurred. Sheppard did had to run around finding paths around the hazards
I have a feeling that the elevator was a bit too busy being on fire and getting shot at with xen rays, but I'm not an elevator expert..

9:33 *Me And The Boys when there's a problem with the main access lift*
aww yeah
This did not have to go that hard!
Black Mesa Security be BALLEN!
It is only now that I realized how ridiculously over the top the Black Mesa Transit System is. And I still love it.
Like 90% of the ridiculous caverns, railtracks, and maintenance tunnels could just be a single hallway with a road topside, LOL.
True. But we gotta remember most of the important facility was underground. Those employees need transportation somehow.
@@kevinbaris3238 They need transportation, not over the top transportation.
You wouldn't expect a video of a dude just walking and going through security protocols for 15 minutes would be interesting, but i was so absorbed by the atmosphere that i seriously didn't see the time pass !
yeah, same, i thought it was gonna be boring, but i came impressed.
god damn that's the best half life's sfm i have seen, the facial expressions, and movement, everything, i wish this has more recognition
Soon it won’t be a SFM it will be a game
Ofc it has barely any recognition,it just came out

In the newest update of Blueshift mod, Freeman actually waive back to Barney when Freeman's tram passed by the security facility
With Animux doing Gordon's timeline in SFM, you should do Barney's, there's so much potential here. The small tweaks in elements from gameplay lore do help with the cinematic flow without steering outside (i.e Elevator Sequence).
All these assets appear to be from the blue shift mod for the black mesa game.
That’s what I thought too
Id love to see that as well. I might do my own take on this from the HECU Marines only its called the Lunar Incident.
11:42 Damn so fcking handsome!
Btw this is definitely the best short film / SFM for Barney Calhoun. I love this one so much and he's my most favorite character in the Half-Life series so really appreciate this.. Thank you for making this!
whenever i see that scene of gordon passing by barney, that scene in freemans mind where gordon goes "Ah I'm not the only one who's late, SUCKEEEEERRRR!!!" in like the first episode
16:06 So thats how Barney got that scar
Barney is a cool dude and is the best friend to Gordon Freeman.

WE ESCAPIN BLACK MESA WITH THIS ONE!!🗣🗣🗣🗣🔥🔥🔥🔥🔥💯💯💯🔥🔥🔥🔥
That soundtrack is ‘The Keeper’ from Black Mesa: Blue Shift!
The level of detail in this video by showing the daily routines for the Black Mesa personnel, like custodians and maintenance workers in the background doing things as simple as mopping the floors and fixing certain key systems to administrative personnel heading to their offices makes this feel all the more alive and realistic.
Incredible work. Congrats on the release 💯
Holy shit its lambda generation
Once my half life game bugged and disconnected rail after it was conneced softlocking the game in the tram.
Omg its keithkevinryan
I remember seeing that symbol in entropy zero 1!
Or at least I think I do
Missed opportunity: Gordon not screaming "SUCKER!" at the top of his lungs while passing by Barney
Freeman's Mind?
@@Not_AnSpy Yeap.
imagine how awesome a full movie like this would be...
Maybe a movie about Eli rescuing his daughter Alyx (who is around 2-3 years old during the Resonance Cascade) from the Black Mesa daycare facility and escaping Black Mesa?
Yes, she was also near Black Mesa as a toddler as both her parents worked there.
This scene (8:47 - 10:03) is in my heart now.❤
Thanks to such works, you realize that the Half Life community is alive and thrives
The starting point did feel rough, and there was some minor clippings. But the moment I saw the cinematic finishing of the whole thing. I was just amazed how they made Mister Barney actually examine the whole thing. The way he just stared as it all went in vain, with him just being stunned right before getting ready for impact. It doesn't feel like SFM, this whole thing is pushed way further than anomalous materials. The dudes who made this have way too much time in their hands.
10/10 best SFM I have ever seen.
This feels like a sort of opening act to an potentially great adaptation of Blue Shift. It’s fantastic!
I like how this animation leans to the more casual and normal side of black mesa, yaknow, before everything when downhill?
Very well put together. A bit on the slow side but the camera work, lighting etc is pretty nice, and well a nice slice of life so to speak on Barneys side of things
The chills, man the chills from this point on 13:40 are just pure gold, Bravo, exactly like in the game. Your job and effort are amazing, really Incredible work.
It’s the little movements that are so outstanding! The way Barney smirks just a little bit when his colleague misses the team.
One of the things that can make or break the pre-disaster portion of an animation is how much activity they have visible during pre-disaster. I'd say this animation had a good, healthy balance. Not too sparse, and not too overstimulating, either. Just right!
Gordon’s unintentional(?) look if superiority as he passes Barney on the train was beautiful
Also aren’t they friends? I just think it’s funny how despite them being friends they don’t look at each other
But still I love this! Blue Shift deserves more love
I think it's because it's not clear what Freeman's personality really is, so they prefer not to risk making him too smiley, although making him so serious doesn't help either.
@@_.paranoid its the Im waiting on a bear face.
@@_.paranoid It looked to me like he makes eye contact with Barney and gives him a slight nod. Gordon is walking quickly and stands at the very edge of the platform with his arms folded because he's late for work and probably pissed off about it because it was going to be an important day. So, it makes sense he'd be a bit frowny but still acknowledges Barney. I'd imagine he'd be a man of subtle ways, wouldn't be open or chatty, I just get that vibe.
@@bluegum6438 i agree
@@bluegum6438 Or it could just be that he noticed Barney but didn’t react quickly enough (probably since he’s late for work).
Ik its not a parody but it would of been funny if the female security still gave off the default barney lines. Prob why they didn't add female guards, the funding needed to record tons of lines.
The Ministry of Silly Walks proudly presents: The best thing about Barney Calhoun to date.
Now THIS is what I call a masterpiece, you definitely nailed it, great job!
devil
Wait, im familiar with ya
Interesting
Absolutely felt the horror of being in black mesa during the resonance cascade in a way that has never been conveyed before. This is a treasure!
GOD DAMN, THIS IS GOOD, only problems I see is flickering at 13:11,
The Source 2 Gordon and Gman look very out of place, with everything being Source 1, and the use of the old compressed HL1 voices. (There is a full audio remaster made by a person called senn, you could ask them for permission for use, maybe.)
Overall, it's perfect
8.5/10 I want moar
Totally agree about the models. It's kinda confusing that no one used Gordon's head from HL2: Survivor (even mod developers), despite the fact it's official Source model too. The only videos that utilized that head were two animated versions of Freeman's Mind moments, if I'm not wrong (and I saw one on this channel as well).
@@RedBarsik1997the funniest thing is that the Survivor Gordon model was the only official one before the Alyx model and it wasn't even made by Valve.
The intro is really good as its unused from the leaked dreamcast port, very good attention to detail, love it! a masterpiece, more than it!
As if Barney wasn't badass enough you made him even cooler. Congrats man!
11:39 Man this is the first time in all SFMs that the main character using a flashlight by hand 🔦✋
Someone make this guy famous, all of his effort doing this was worth it
And to think that for Barney that fatidic day started just as another day at work, the same we can say about Gordon and for Shephard it was just a normal mission (because he never recieved his actual orders). Neither of them could imagine the world would never be the same after that day.
the parallels to barney and gordon's perspective is easily one of my favorite things about this
Dude this looks amazing however 1 small criticism has to be the walking animations, it's hard to say but it is noticeable for example when Barney boards the tram or the backshot of Gordon walking. However this sfm has so much love put into it and I love it! Keep up the amazing work.
I played Blue shift numerous of times but I still wasn't ready for these scenes. Absolutely brilliant work.
This has some of the best environment/world building that I have seen in an SFM.
I know plenty of other people have said this, but it really does bring Black Mesa more to life than ever!
Love the attention to detail showing how he got the scar on his face in HL2 :)
Holly shit man, this was good; this felt like an official secret cutscene!
So much polish and quality.
TH-cam recommendations worked.
Now, I wanna read up on the lore.
It was nostalgic to see the scene play out from a different perspective.
This should become a series it’s so good
I know I'm a little late, but this is, the BEST thing I have seen in a LONG TIME!!
I would LOVE to see you make more of these! Absolutely phenomenal!
All things considered Barney probably had the luckiest situation of the three, damn fine work nevertheless
J'en reviens pas de la quantité de travail dans ce projet, j'aurai jamais cru qu'il était possible d'accomplir un truc pareil sur SFM. Bravo l'artiste !
Love how at 8:27 everyone has Glock but one Female guard has a Magnum lol
Beautifuly animated! Damn, must be one of the best animations I have seen, the amount of cool details and all the expressions and movement from the characters, love it!
I feel Jake Gyllenhaal would absolutely kill if there was ever a half life movie starring Barney.
YES! Jake Gyllenhaal is always amazing in these military/secret roles
To me Barney always looked more like Ron Livingston or Kyle Chandler.
Calhoun on the Blue Shift boxart always vaguely reminded me of Matthew Broderick.
Matt is probably too goofy to play a live action Calhoun, though.
Definitely would love to see more of Barney’s escape from Black Mesa reimagined as a cinematic experience. This was absolutely friggin’ awesome by the way! Good job! 😁
i was half expecting Freeman the to yells sucker when he went by
Nice animation of the opening of Blue Shift. If people haven't played Blue Shift made for Black Mesa yet, I'd highly recommend checking it out. It's not 100% yet but what they have done is phenomenal.
It would be so cool for someone to mod the barney lines used here into those moments of the game. (Maybe even giving him some grunts and such) barney canonically talks, and even if it’s reused dialog, it’s still pretty cool seeing him respond to people. (Gordon should stay silent forever tho.)
0:46 Is this a nod to the canceled Dreamcast port intro? That's cool ;)
Also, the girl from 3:15 to 3:30 reminded me of Kate from Azure Sheep a bit.
Yep, congratulation for the reference ;)
That was an amazing film to watch, loved every second, and the little details placed, from background characters seen around the facility, to the protagonist himself Barney!
Amazing work, and it directly follows the Blue Shift opening. I honestly didn't expect the voice lines to be included but it was fantastic. The attention to detail and the interactions, phenomenal.
Expertly done. Way better then anything Hollywood could ever do.
well now im gonna go play blue shift again. thank you for such a well put together and faithful tribute to that memorable opening, very well done
Fun fact; in reality, falling elevators are basically an impossibility outside of decades of egregious neglect or wilful sabotage. For one thing, elevators have brakes that automatically engage if the other safety mechanisms fails, but more importantly, an elevator has *eight* cables holding it up, each of which can individually support the entire weight of the cabin at double its listed capacity. Being injured or killed in an elevator-related incident is something like a 0.000013% chance of happening, and even then that statistic is skewed because the majority of people hurt by elevators are elevator repairmen.
Truly a blessing that I got this recommended only 3 days after uploading! Bro I dont even know what to say, this is exactly the kind of stuff I always expected as a kid when people did those "X series: The movie" videos and it was just a compilation of trailers... But you actually made it reality so awesome job to you and everyone involved!
Trully a best animation showing the events of Half-life esp Barney's story during the incident
Duuude, that was freaking magnificent!
P.S. And You added women guards. Like it.
6:19
Aahhh the Freeman!
15:36 I don't think that nuclear waste actually explodes and I don't know why people think it does, maybe because they associate ionizing radiation sign with nuclear explosion idk, but this video is amazing and i'm loving it.
This is how I pictured an SFM movie showing the perspectives of HL1 and the expansions from the point of 3rd person for years. You have done an amazing job!
Pretty cool, if you dont a second part I will find where you live and send you a box with my fecal matter.
9:33 this is brilliant
No, whole movie is masterpiece!
Holy shit that is good. Having animation for the other protagonists of Half Life is a very awesome idea ! Shepard and even Gina and Colette from Half life opposing force and Decay could get something out of an animation, this is a swell idea that you got doing Barney.
the elevator part gave me the chills, really well done man
About that beer he owes ya.
Amazing job man, nice job porting Black Mesa's lighting system to SFM. And the blue shift rendition of the resonance cascade was perfectly done. I would have used an explosive barrel instead of a radioactive one tho, that is if I could even accomplish anything close to this. Amazing job!
Holy crap, the entire disaster sequence was a work of ART. Well done! Absolutely phenomenal work capturing the mood of Black Mesa, both before and after the moment of impact!
This took me an extra 10 minutes or so to watch because I kept rewinding to catch all the details. This is one of, if not the best sfm I’ve ever seen
You can see the production quality get better the more you watch this video. Good job man!
Nicely done! loved the female guards abd the berets. Nice touch wit Bareney speaking too and home bracing for impact. One thing I love I particular, is how you used advantage of the pips exploding from pressure as you must do in the mod, good thinking! Man, I really loved the little details in the mod, like the first person animations
That is Art. Really. It's so well animated ! I love it ! Black Mesa feel so real, it's really one of the, or probably, the best SFM i never seen !
The only problem is sometime the textures are buggy, but the rest wow ! I'm so sad that there is no movies about Half-Life, because like, this look like a real half life movie ! Great Job buddy !

Wow, amazing if they still made saxxy awards, it would really be a good one. This, remiss blue and we are only at the start of the year.
I feel like I just found an intriguing new sci-fi thriller series while flipping through the channels on TV. You made this so beautifully cinematic while maintaining subtlety. Very modern style of intro credits and the way you superimposed Barney's character label/description over the adjacent empty tram seat would fit right in with anything contemporary you might see on an HBO or Netflix series.
So awesome! I would watch an entire series of hour-long episodes of this stuff if you ever end up making it. Bravo!
Love the mixture of old and new sound and music, Joel Nielsen's tracks are great but Chris Jensen's ambient growling tracks make for some good tension.
Is Chris Jensens the name of DAVER, the guy who wrote the music for Blue Shift?
@@tankingbeast1132 Chris Jensen wrote the music for Opposing Force and, by extension, Blue Shift.
@@racer927 ah for the original blue shift. I see
