13:42 while seafloor levels have been cut, the concept of the Combine draining the oceans was not, and it is still canon in Half-Life. If you look at the seaside levels in hl2, you can see that the water is several meters below what it should be, leaving huge stretches of beach that didn't exist previously and shipwrecks everywhere. When you look at the docks you can see the marks of where the water used to be before. This is also noticeable in a few areas in Water Hazard. There are also gmod maps on steam workshop that restore these locations to how they were before the 7 hour war, making it very obvious just how much water was drained. Seach for "gm coast pre war"
I feel the more severe seafloor drainage was probably cut because such highly open areas would have presented challenges in keeping the player on track. The sea works as a more natural obstacle than having endless lines of sunken ships next to rocks next to fallen piers, or having the particle storm kill you if you go too far or something

Pretty sure the “On a Rail” screams can be heard in Xen too, during the alien factory scene in “Interloper” Edit: thanks to Dario Casali’s playthrough of HL1 on his channel this month, we know the headcrab zombie sounds _were_ Laidlaw.
TBF, I'm pretty sure it was Laidlaw who said that, especially in smaller teams and especially in roles like his, you end up potentially doing a bit of everything just to help where it's needed at a given time. I mean, he did make some test maps. I'm not sure how the G-Man getting flown through the air by crows could've aided development, but I trust the guy. He's a good writer and apparently not bad at screaming either.
20:15 The Nihilanth was designed to look like a baby because the concept artist asked Gabe what was the scariest thing he could think of. At the time Gabe‘s son had just been born, so he answered that it was probably a baby. They went along with this design as a joke. (From an interview with Gray Newell.) 21:00 The zombie sounds are indeed voiced by Marc Laidlaw himself. Laidlaw said that he'd been trying to get into professional dubbing, but unfortunately can't reach that level. He also voiced Doug Rattmann as well as a lot of placeholder lines in various beta maps. You can hear the resemblance. It is clearly his voice.
Kleiner was actually not at MIT when he wrote From Here to There in Under a Second. He was an emeritus professor, emeritus meaning "having retired but allowed to retain their title as an honor." It's likely he was already at Black Mesa but, due to its secretive nature, wasn't able to put that on the book.

To me it looks more similar to a Vortagaunt, a grunt or even a controller given that it has 3 arms and two legs. It seems like most of the creatures from the Vortagaunt homeworld are that shape.
20:21 I imagine the reason why Headcrabs don't drown in the first Half-Life is purely due to the devs never bothering to add any code to make them drown. All the other entities in HL1 can't drown and the Icthyosaurs and Leeches can't die from being out of water. Hell, I'm pretty sure the entities in Half-Life 2 that aren't zombie-less Headcrabs or Antlion Soldiers/Workers can't drown either. I think it's also worth noting that Headcrabs are never encountered near radiation in HL1, only appearing near it in Op4. Basically, what I'm getting at is that there's a lot of parts of HL1 that were just never fully finished.
Actually there is one spot in half life 1 where headcrabs can fall in radioactive liquid: at the beginning of residue processing, when the guard is shooting headcrabs before he runs into a corridor and gets caught by a barnacle. The headcrabs can jump and fall in the green liquid in the corners of the room. And they take no damage. So op4 is the game that got it wrong

14:50 I imagine IMO '36 after 7" is supposed to reference the clocks found after floods and on the Titanic and such that stop at the time the tragic event happens, meaning this could be interpreted as the 7 our war stopped 36 minutes after 7pm/am because and this was the moment "all clocks stopped" because of the sudden collosal tragedy.
@@deusexmachina2938it could still be interpreted this way because it's a reference to a time of day, not a duration. 36 after 7* isn't how you'd say 7* hours and 36 minutes. It is how you might refer to a time of day if you're being poetic. I still think it's unlikely because the war obviously happened in multiple timezones and surrender was probably declared at more or less the same time everywhere. *Or 6, 8 whatever

19:41 The OAR screams also show up in the Nilhanth portal (the one right before his fight) and in a hidden area in the final ascending room of interloper
I think the devs meant to change Eli's sweater to differentiate which of the endings were canon but they later changed it back so that they could keep the ending up to interpretation
Lovely! I'm looking forward to watch the rest. I appreaciate the Freeman's Mind reference in the video so I don't have to just play them in my mind. I hope the afterthoughts of Laidlaw about Epistle 3 are also in the iceberg. He analyzed what was wrong with his story or why it wouldn't work as a video game, but I think he later deleted it. It's an interesting read. I hadn't heard Merle's voice for HL:A before. I have to agree now she sounds too old for the role. The "Universal Union" mentioned I think it's intersting too. IIRC Laidlaw just used it without much thought and later regretted it when fans gave it too much importance. I was sure Thirty Seven After Six was the time in a clock found in that map, but now I'm not sure where I got that from and I can't check. I hope someone with a VR headset can confirm it. 19:04 oooooohhhhh so that's what that is
I've had a pointless conspiracy theory for like 15 years and no one believes me, and it's that the zombies crying for help wasn't planned. It's definitely true that if you reverse one of the voice lines you will hear the zombie saying, "Oh, God, help! Help me!" but what no one else seems to acknowledge is that reversing all the other files will reveal that they are also all the other files. As in, fully half of the zombie audio is just the other half played in reverse. So my pointless theory is that they told the guy in the sound booth to "make some pained moans" and while just yelling and groaning into the mic he said the now iconic line. Then during editing they decided they didn't want the zombies to say words, but they also didn't want to cut out their limited audio or worse try and bring the guy back in, so they instead just reversed the clip and then realized they could get even more life out of their audio by reversing the rest too. I have absolutely no proof of this besides that yeah the other clips are also backwards, but I do know that art isn't always as deep as we want to think and that sometimes the coolest fine detail was just some tech who did a thing because it made his job easier, and knowing sound guys this sounds exactly like something that could happen. Thank you for coming to my TED Talk, if you read all this then no refunds.

I'm not completely sure what makes this video so "ULTIMATE", considering how you've cut a ton of interesting detail from the various points that you mention. 14:50 I imagine IMO '36 after 7" is supposed to reference the clocks found after floods and on the Titanic and such that stop at the time the tragic event happens, meaning this could be interpreted as the 7 our war stopped 36 minutes after 7pm/am because and this was the moment "all clocks stopped" because of the sudden collosal tragedy.
nah its clearly a mistake. it's supposed to be thirty-seven after six
@@SineN0mine3 i made the iceberg image. its a mistake on my part, but that's an interesting theory.
though saying it as thirty-seven after six makes sense, as in 'thirty-seven minutes after six o'clock'

Borealis In iceberg?!?!?
half life 3 is coming out in only 39041296746012089246712 years
@@bruhgod123going to release after the extinction event
@@H.E.C.U_amugos Not that long.
Part 2 is gonna be released the same day as Half-Life 3
Out of all the video games I have played (S.T.A.L.K.E.R. series, among others) Half Life is the most dauntingly, horrifically-feeling I have played.
You play as Dr. Freeman, after all. Imagine waking up to City 17 after 20 years of stasis.
Where is part 2 plssss
Oh btw, the only reason the big pink cookie recipe came out was due to Electra trying to get me a valve themed Christmas present, and worked with Kelly Cline to make those cookies.
Wait, aren't you that controversial guy?

This iceberg is massive, excited for the other parts!!
Damn, I can’t wait for the next one! I’m definitely subscribing 👍🏻
God, I can’t wait for the next episode.
When i heard "The Black Mesa Incident" the first thing i thought of a certain microwave casserole
I didn’t see this video when it came out but your new short led me to it. And I’m a subscriber! That really does work
Really well produced video, congratulations. I can't wait for the next part
Excited to see part 2 boss! Picked up the orange box after watching this, I’ve gotta say people dont lie when they say half life 2 is one of the greatest games ever made.
15:50 " a few VAG physical simmilarities" lol
5:36 some of these samples are also used in the first Postal game.
It's nice to see (what I think is) a nod to one of my shitposts at 13:16. And all around this video is great! Hope to see part 2 soon
Imagine not mentioning the Horror1-4.wav files were later used in Left 4 Dead as the sound the horde makes.
10:25 - wait... that vort sounds like... TONY TODD?! GOD! DAMMIT! WHY DID WE HAVE TO LOSE SUCH A LEGEND?!
I'm... I'm gonna have a cigar... and a beer... first time I saw Tony Todd was in Star Trek TNG. His voice, much like James Earl Jones, who also passed this year, is beyond distinctive. It is UNMISTAKABLE.
11:10 the unnecessarily rude comment on the Alyx developer is so funny lmaoo
Half life is one of my favorite games of ever, can’t wait to watch
Can't wait for part 3
Wait
i think you mean part 2:episode 1
21:06 In Dario Casali's recent HL1 Playthrough Im pretty sure he also said it was Marc and that he heard them being recorded
Where is the next part
I think from the view count he thought it wasn't viable to continue the series due to the research and work put into it. Sad, I got really invested.
"We don't know much about the Vault", Well we know that the Vault is powered by Vortigaunt energy
Fun fact the music in the playground plays even if you have music disabled.
2:10 the fact that there is a high likelihood that Laidlaw wrote Eli getting his fucking brain eaten by a giant grub while he was eating a bigass cute pink cookie actually kills me im so happy
this video is so good dude! i know u were worried about the performance but i bet when you put out more parts of this badboy youll see the algorithm scoup it up
deadass set the video to 0.5x speed to listen to the explanation at 0:12 even though I've been bingeing 'iceberg' videos for the past 3 hours
If Duke Nukem and doom guy had a nephew it be ivan the space biker
I imagine that Duke and Doom Guy's brother is the quiet one of the three. I guess their dad would be B. J. Blazkowicz from Wolfenstein
9:44 I'm pretty sure it's talking about the cat that made Barney turned right side out again to make sure it was a cat,
Whoosh
Oh sweet something to look forward to after work
19:41
The OAR screams also show up in the Nilhanth portal (the one right before his fight) and in a hidden area in the final ascending room of interloper
I guess it's fitting that on the Half-Life ice berg we're still awaiting the next part.
2:59 i saw that image and was like "this has to be one of my wallpapers now" the art is legendary imo
wow, such cool and gigantic work've been done. very enjoyed my time watching it. now waiting for the next part, keep going dude!
So glad this got recommended to me. Subbed so I don't miss out on any of it. Looking forward to the rest!
This video stayed so long in the oven by now the iceberg has melted
He just needs to freeze it again
Congratulations to 40k subs
Been looking for this particular iceberg for ages, glad you're covering it
we need more please
I think the devs meant to change Eli's sweater to differentiate which of the endings were canon but they later changed it back so that they could keep the ending up to interpretation
Will we be getting a part 2? It's been a year
I may be wrong, but there was an original recasting for Alyx in half life 2. You can hear the original voice actor who was recasted , in the beta.
I'm super excited for the rest of this series. Thank you!

The ULTIMATE Half-Life Iceberg (part 2) is going to end up on the next iceberg
I'm not completely sure what makes this video so "ULTIMATE", considering how you've cut a ton of interesting detail from the various points that you mention. And while I'm glad you're giving other creators credit, it really helps deliver the "ULTIMATE"-ness of the video when you don't explain anything and just say, "Go find it somewhere else".
Part 2
wheres part 2
FINALLY A LARGE HALF-LIFE ICEBERG
Dude this video is booming so fast great job
9:45 In Red Letter Day, Barney mentions that he has nightmares about some cat that he saw during one of the teleportation experiments.
And in HL2 files, there is an unused weird cat model and people speculate that its the same cat that Barney saw
What's interesting about that creepy music is that at some point I discovered where it was being sampled from (which was a while ago, forgot where I found it) and I also discovered that a playstation 1 racing game called "Vanishing Point" sampled from the same track, except from a different part of it.
The trumpet music appears in Alyx, too. On the radio in the very opening, hinting at what's to come.
