The reason for the audio desync in the clip is due to how premiere handles Variable Frame Rate videos that OBS often puts out, when the models switch it causes the OBS video capture to freeze for a few frames while the audio keeps going, but sense OBS is recording in variable framerate, the media player can readjust and resync it. However premiere is notoriously bad with VFR so that's what causes the desync. Would recommend in the future re-encoding your OBS clips with handbrake to CFR (Constant Frame Rate) before importing into premiere to fix the issue.
The "M4" in the HD pack is a Colt M727. The tells are the upper receiver having the solid carry handle with adjustable height and the 14.5" barrel with the upper half of the short round handguard. It's also period accurate for the time these models were made.
@Adriethyl Yes it doesn't, buy it didn't bother me much. Not playing Half-Life for hyper realism, same can be said about MP5s. Not saying that one is better then other, to each their own, and luckily we can choose which models we want to play with.
@@Adriethyl Ironically, it kind of does, as there are AR-15 variants that use 9mm as their ammo. Granted, the magazine looks rather whacky as it would be basically just a thin stick in the massive mag-well, but they do exist. Killing Floor 2 uses a far more accurate one (it's the starting gun of the Commando class). Not the M727, that's still 5.56 NATO. And supposedly, in the Beta, the HECU were supposed to bring AR-15 weapons of some kind, too. On a slightly related note, the 92FS (the pistol, which isn't a straight M9) also is technically fully accuate with its 17-round-mag, as there exist 17-round-mags for it. It's also not modelled correctly with the wrong magazine, but they do exist, too.
I still appreciate that the robots that replace the marines in the German port have completely updated models on the PS2. It's kind of nuts that they went through all that effort to make them look nicer.
4:40-6:23 About the editor note, it's because somehow, sometimes, Adobe can't deal with Peak Framerate (or Variable Framerate, I don't remember), which is what I assume the source was recorded. You can use HandBrake to "fix" by changing it to Constant Framerate, but you will have to mess with the settings to make sure there's no quality loss
Thanks! I'll have to see if there's a way to change it in my recording software. I use shadowplay and I'm sure I've had it set to constant framerate the whole time though
I just wish original Barney didn't look like an 80 year old man in a security officer suit or HD G-Man didn't have the goofiest smile pasted on his face. If one of those were fixed i would happily pick that texture pack.
Also, HD pack’s Beretta 92 is weird as fuck. It’s like they took 2D flat texture and dragged it across the 3rd dimension, giving it a weird, unnatural, blocky shape, unlike real 92f, which is very elegant. In the game it’s thick as hell, has weird thin hammer, slide cycles too slowly, and shells eject from a wrong place. Recoil animation is exaggerated too, like it’s a 44 magnum or something.
I think it's because they reused the Desert Eagle animation for it. I personally don't mind the animation itself, but the incorrect ejection and lack of magazine is disappointing.
It's a shame too, because the Beretta in Azure Sheep (a really old HL1 mod made around the same time the HD pack came out) actually looks really nice and fits with the GoldSrc engine's general style quite well, in my opinion.
Yeah. The shotgun is honestly the only part I kinda like. Though, maybe they should play with it's levels a bit, because yeah it's definitely peaking the mic.
I never forgave game developers for getting rid of the comical looking blood and guts. Everything, EVERYTHING was lazy ragdoll slop after a certain point in the 2000's. I loved watching human and alien blood and guts, skulls exploding all over the place and mixing around during epic battles and calamity, guts spewing down a hallway from laser mines and explosions and the trails of blood behind them; shooting out vents like a fire hose or the sudden cartoonish death of various Barney's and Kleiner's getting popped into guts if they got caught by so much as a door closing or stepping on a thumb tack. Then, there was the sounds, the gurgly meat smacking sounds that came with it all. I loved when explosives would soften up target's -be it a grunt or an alien grunt or a vort and the burst into laughter when a single .357 to the head would rupture them into guts. Anytime the meat flew around the level you knew shjt was going down. The satisfaction of throwing a hand grenade that looked the size of a Wilson Football into a cave, hearing it explode, and then a hail of guts flinging gloriously down the cliff face (surface tension) Oh man... Getting rid of the guts took away so much of the play value. Hell, I would have accepted the ragdoll if the guts stayed, would have looked even better!
I can get why people don't like and don't use the HD models, but I just use them anyway because that's because I didn't realise the other models existed because of them being pre-loaded ones when I first played and it just looks weird when I use the low def models
I also played with HD the first time. The textures make the game feel like a “rewinded” version of a modern Valve game to me, like you could take even a game as new as CS2 and feel like it’s an evolution of the HL1 HD textures. The original textures feel more like Doom to me, they seem darker or less lively/polished.
Here's some minor Details, errors, and miscellanea about and relating to the HD models that I just so happen to know in no particular order: (I don't know how I've learnt this much, I've never used them once, even in mods that come with them built in) In addition to the Snarks gaining antennae and yellow markings in the HD pack, whey also gained claw feet; a trait that carries over to Half-Life: Alyx's Snark. HL1's HD Barney is Different from Op4's and Blue Shift's, having blurrier textures, differently coloured clothes and skin, and a broken mouth. The only non-Barney.mdl Barney model in Blue Shift's HD pack to use the Op4/Blue Shift HD Barney textures is wrangler.mdl, the model of the Barney who gives you your pistol. Interestingly though, despite using the HL1 HD Barney's textures, the other non-Barney.mdl Barney models don't have broken mouths. For some reason the Female Assassin's, Alien Contoller's, Gonarch's, and Nihilanth's models were never given the HD treatment, meaning that the models stand out horribly the console ports and that Female Assassins still have their Glocks. In the Console ports of HL1, the Op4 Female Assassin is used instead of the HL1 one. The Dreamcast Alien Grunt uses textures that are far more faithful to the Hl1 textures. Of course, these textures were replaced in the PC version's HD pack. Bizarrely, the Dreamcast Houndeye closely resembles the Half-Life alpha's Houndeye. The Blue Shift HD pack's Beretta is the only one to have a working slide for some reason. The Grip of the HD revolver is actually just a colour edited version of LD revolver's grip, which, side note: is a desaturated brown, not jet black. Op4's HD Vortigaunt uses slightly different, far lower resolution textures, for some god forsaken reason. HL1's HD grunts use a far lower resolution body texture. The HD G-Man isn't able to move his eyebrows, unlike the LD one. The HD Cleansuit Scientists don't ware the HD ID cards that the rest of the HD BMRF personnel have, instead wearing the original Op4 Cleansuit Scientist IDs. At least someone at Gearbox decided that Rosenberg needed a completely new head that barely resembles the Blue Shift one when making Decay. The PS2 port features unused model versions of the HECU's M44 cargo truck and M2A3 Bradley. Black Mesa SUVs also got model versions, but those are used in Decay, and only decay. With the HD pack enabled, Vortigaunts don't take any extra damage from being shot in the head. This is a mistake made with several other NPC models that Gearbox made, including, most annoyingly, the male Black Ops. That's why they can survive a Deagle shot to the head on hard. The HD grunts move slower than the LD grunts. I also heard from someone who looked at the HD grunt models that they fire slower and less accurately, but I don't know where to look in the model's files to verify that. Also I'm not sure if any of this applies to the HD Opposing Force grunts. Speaking of the HD Opposing Force grunts, they're more than just slapping the HD weapons on the LD marines; in fact they're surprisingly different (and also bad). They have the HD vests, backpacks, and boots, the HD gas mask and balaclava heads, and a new SAW gunner torso. That's about where the objective positives stop though. Now onto the weird and bad: All the Op4 grunt heads (barring the engie) have dislocated jaws and just look a bit worse in general shape-wise, they don't have any of the enemy HD grunts' animations, have many UV errors litterd all across the different parts of the models, the into_commander and medic models have hew face textures for some reason, the balaclava grunt is white and not black (Gearbox never made skin groups for Op4 grunts), and there's no unique shotgunner torso. Most of Blue Shift's HD viewmodels have at least some low resolution textures that are either worse resolution than the LD Blue Shift viewmodels (for the hands and sleeves), or for the other games' HD viewmodels. This is a remnant of the Dreamcast version, which had to have very low-res textures to even run in the state that it did. Rosenberg's HD head isn't just plastered onto the LD scientist body, in reality it's plastered onto a version of the LD scientist body that's been lazily stretched onto the HD scientist model's skeleton. This was most like done so that Gearbox didn't have to create any new animations for them (despite them doing that exact thing for Blue Shift's LD Barney), and also results in them looking kinda weird and them healing you with their syringeless hands. The HD pack Zombie has a bit of the top of its back move weirdly. I'm surprised I've seen no one vocally say they know this, but the HD pack Zombie's green blotches were probably added to tie it closer to the Gonome, which also has weird green blotches on it for some reason. The head of the LD model of the dead armourless barney found on Blue Shift is quite clearly just a slightly edited version of the HD dead armourless barney head, with different textures, and being slapped on the LD barney body, again, with different textures). The most notable evidence of this are the LD head's fully modelled ears, a trait no other official LD model has. The mask texture of the Op4 and HD pack gas mask grunts is for strangely derived from Day One's gas mask grunt mask texture rather than HL1's final gas mask grunt mask texture. If Gearbox HD'd the Nihilanth I bet it would've looked like Black Mesa's Nihilanth. I think about this a lot, but I'm never able to decide whether the Opposing Force HD pack of Blue Shift's LD models had less time and effort put into them.
Thank you for this detailed breakdown. This is what I was looking for in this video instead of the unhinged Sega rant and overextended better call saul joke
“They stink, and I don’t like ‘em!” Though to be honest, I use them when I play opposing force because I like the idea of the HECU using different weapons like the AR or M9 rather than coincidentally the same weapons as the BM security detail.
it would make more sense to use sd though, considering that: a: black mesa is mostly corridors and close quarters combat, so it’d figure that they use an mp5, a submachine gun b: this was still during the mp5’s big heyday as THE smg, so of course everyone would use it c: the hecu is a special ops unit, and for this mission they specifically go into black mesa, so they wouldn’t just use normal standard issue weaponry d: black mesa is a government facility, so it would figure that they would use some of the same weapons as the military e: the glock 17 was newfangled, but nearly everybody was praising it at the time, so of course a specialised government facility would use it, and of course a specialised spec ops unit would too
I played Half-Life as a kid and loved it. Then when Blue Shift came out and updated the style I loved that too. As a 11 year old it was just awesome. I didn’t know or care about artistic style, bullet calibres and all other stuff, it just looked cool and was such fun. And that it could apply to the older games was even cooler. It got me into modding, and even now, 20 years later, i still run with a bespoke heavily modified set of the PS2 models in my Half-Life playthroughs - though with a reimagined HD MP5 and Glock. It all feels like a comic-book vibe and I love it.
@@juonovomThe HL community uses a few different terms to classify the models based on their level of detail: LD - Low Definition: the default Half-Life models from 1998 HD - High Definition: the Gearbox models that came with Blue Shift in 2001 SD - Super Definition models: the PS2 models and any fan made models made in the PS2 style like Ambient Impact and Romka UD - Ultra Definition model: the Black Mesa models ported to GOLDSrc, or any models made in the Black Mesa style like the Trusty Packs I also came across MD - Mixed Definition: fan made models that are basically hybrids between the LD and HD models as they take parts from both and combine them
I'd even argue that REmake has more of an art style than the original game does. The world is hauntingly beautiful and gives off such good ambience that just isn't there in the original. And the Orignal Resi has definitely aged since the release of Resi 2 and 3 which improved the visuals in every way, and also still look impressive on a ps1 technical level.
I didnt have THAT much of an issue with the HD models. NPC models are fine for most part aside of weird looking zombies. The fact its optional and still relatively close to the style of texturing in og game is okay. Its a far cry from how awful and ruined games can be with GTA "Definitive Trilogy" or Warcraft 3 "Reforged"(it turns a comic style game i to Raid Shadowlegends-like mess).
16:14 I dont know how many people pointed this out but with the disc version of blue shift if you install the game theres another option to install the hd models and you get to choose which games to install them to, one of which actually being opposing force !
The sounds for the rifle and shotgun being too loud is really my only complaint, but I will admit that the sound for the shotgun is quite nice; sounds powerful.
I don't know why but I always had a soft spot for the HD shotgun. Something about the SPAS-12 design and the extra loud sound effects just feel more satisfying to use.
The Dreamcast is looked back retrospectively fondly due to it having a lot of substantial instances of things that have carried over to modern consoles: Internet connection where you could actually buy things (I have no idea if anyone actually used that). The ability to download DLCs, patches, and updates for games. There were also non-extremely gimmicky accessories for the console like a mouse and camera. You could also browse the internet and email. It was technically better than the PS1 and N64 and wasn't supposedly a pain to make games on like the Sega Saturn. Unfortunately, the PlayStation 2 killed any chance the Dreamcast had and it more or less being forgotten. Its appreciation is retrospective admiration post mortem. Not sure why Valve would want a port of a PC FPS on a console with a controller that had 1 analog stick making looking around extremely tedious and troublesome for something like an FPS.
- the internet connection was dial-up only, right before people started switch to broadband. - DLC was for very few games, and subjectively isn't a step forward in gaming - it's a 6th generation console that released too early, making it the least performant 6th generation console - no dvd playback (which is almost the sole reason the ps2 was so popular) sorry dreamcastbros, take the L P.S.: i am a dreamcast owner
@@SuperM789It's wasn't just dial up? You could replace the modem with an ethernet adapter. The ps2 didn't even have a way to connect to the Internet by default.
10:56 to give some credit, sa1 does look beautiful, especially with those lightning effects …which nintendo completely butchered during the porting process to gamecube for sadx. hey this feels familiar.
@@teaoftraffic Ah right. I didn't know it was rushed. I know it's bad nowadays, but back when it first released, it was just mediocre in terms of a "remake" or remastered, but it wasn't bad by any means.
The discussions around the HD Pack are some of the most annoying circlejerks in the Half-Life community. I'm really sick of people who don't like it constantly reinforcing eachother's opinions of it to the point where people shit on it every chance they get and are convinced they are objectively correct.
Yeah you're not wrong. Always annoyed me too, and I'm not even a diehard HDP fan (I'm more someone who likes certain things in the base game more and like certain things in the HDP more).
It make sense for hd models to be in blue shift. rosenburg is already hd, so using low def models seeing low def walter beside a rosenburg with high def face but low def outfit looks so out of place.
Ok, but counterpoint: the Dreamcast is awesome. Its memory card acts as a mini console. You can install officially sanctioned homebrew onto as well as acting like a second screen, and the controller uses a Hall-Effect analog stick so it never gets stick drift. Plus, as you said in the video, 2 analog sticks wasn't a standard yet, and this is still far better than the N64 controller comfort-wise. It was also a major pioneer in online console gaming. Microsoft actually helped create the system, and it was a heavy inspiration for the original Xbox.
Don't care what people say, I love the HQ models. I especially adore the PS2 version's ULTRA HQ models, with animated facial expressions, full 5-digit hands, and animated Health / Recharge stations. Said version also "fixes" the M4 rifle by giving it its own ammo type.
Hey! Don't you poop on Game Banana! Modders are the heart and soul of the Valve community. Otherwise I mostly agree with you about the original SD models being the best way to play Half-Life, but I liked the new snarks and always disliked the original revolver.
Weirdly, having played HL relatively recently, I had the HD pack weapon models by default, but the classic HL scientists (and presumably other models). This was before the 25th anniversary. Regardless, and insult me for this take as much as you like, I much prefer the HD weapons.
Well, either that or I saw the ugly new scientists, panicked, set the game to classic models, and purged the memories from my mind before the stains set in.
@@FlamingLily judging by how "valve_hd" only contains the new models, i think that any assets not in valve_hd just use valve instead. that could be it
The circa 2006 version of Half-Life Source was honest to god really decent. Except for the invulnerable cliff-side helicopter, everything worked just fine.
It's such a shame. They broke it around 2010 with the orange box update and then kept breaking it further and never looked back. I loved my funny Half Life with ragdolls
The HD models were actually the first way I played the game since I didn't realise they weren't the originals. I do prefer the originals to the HD, but generally I think that the HD models suffer more from being in the wrong environment, with the exception of the NPCs, which I think you described excellently with the uncanny valley thing And based asf on the Super Mario 3D World + Bowser's Fury thing btw
how long does the chat last after the main thing ends again? This live event is over. Chat is no longer available. anyway honestly first one of these i didnt like tbh. instead of an analysis it was just constant rants and insults ...feels weird ending a comment like that so heres some trivia i guess in hl1 og models, gman is the only human(ish) model to have seperated fingers and even a moving brow cool little thing that makes him a bit more alien ..it's a shame, i enjoyed the stream leading to this.
The Glock and the Beretta are still heavily associated with Americana because of their widespread usage in American police and military though. Its actual country of origin is irrelevant. The M1 Garand was made by a Canadian, but it's still a very American weapon.
@@snowblind9551both Glock and Beretta see international use though, saying they have widespread use in American police and military is an understatement, pretty much the entire world uses them (and with good reason, they're solid handgun choices)
"I just think the (Dreamcast) games look dumb" "I'm still not going to play Sonic Adventure either" This man really just had to make this video as an excuse to shut on both Sega and the Sonic franchise, bro singlehandedly lost all credibility I gave him
@@wumpus976 Also I heard that the Online Servers for Phantasy Star Online and Quake 3 Arena are both still Online on the Sega Dreamcast and have people playing daily Is that true?
i think that the dreamcast hate is unearned. especially considering this video isn't even about the fucking dreamcast it's supposed to be about hit video game half-life and also you haven't even played any dreamcast games, except for half-life but that doesn't count! also dreamcast got at least 3 good games (sonic adventure 1 and 2 and hit video game, knights) so it's a good console. ps5 got like 1 game (arguably good) and people be liking it. but when sega makes a game console that not only has a bunch of games but has 3 GOOD ONES (at least, i haven't played any other ones) people hate it. literally so sad. anyway i agree with your takes on hit video game series half-life so i'm not going to unsub and block you for now, unless you piss and shit on the dreamcast again. oh also sonic adventure has a very similar situation to half-life. it was released and looked super cool and epic but then in a rerelease they fucked it up, except for in sonic adventures case you have to use mods to fix it or just play the original release.
Bro the Dreamcast has a ton of classics. Phantasy Star Online v1 and v2 - the best game ever Soul Calibur Shenmue Sonic games Nights into Dreams Jet Set Radio Crazy Taxi Evolution The World of Sacred Device Evolution 2 Gauntlet Legends Skies of Arcadia
@@jigzyonline2 when i said knights i meant nights into dreams lol i thought it was spelled with a k. anyway i know that the dreamcast has a bunch of good games that's why i said AT LEAST 3. it's just that i've only played 3 dreamcast games.
man all these are luxury problems compared to what we had to endure in germany with robots instead of soldiers, no blood when hitting meelee or with guns, not even alien colored and people just sitting down when you shoot them
The hd shotgun looks miles better than the original The original model is completely out of proportion compared to a spas 12 The hd model actually resembles it though
I always play Half Life and Opposing force with the standard-def models. But whenever I play Blue Shift I always use the HD models since they were designed for it.
@@Nolant. I honestly fail to see how the HD models make the game look worse. The only thing I can agree with when it comes to the HD models being worse is the fact that they changed the guns. Like the SMG being changed to an assault rifle. But stuff like the crowbar? Nah, I think that's just being nitpicky. Crowbars look dirty like that in real life anyways.
Back in the day installing the hd pack from the blue shift cd was an impressive improvement. I was also a young teen at the time , and any graphical improvement was a good thing . Back then the hd pack worked on all 3 as far as i remeber . This was all pre steam realeases
22 minutes when it could have just boiled down to "I hate the models because I think they're bad" with no substance whatsoever, that's some classic HD models discourse right there
is the point of the rifle and pistol sharing ammo pools not making sense with the hd pack since the default model is an smg considered "they're bad" or like what lol
The chicanery bit is about the best thing i've seen on TH-cam in about 4 years. I went from laughing my ass off to my jaw dropping as soon and you said USB drive cus I knew exactly which Gearbox employee you were about to talk about, then back to laughing. Bravo.
Jetset radio looks amazing my man, and the controller isn’t that bad looking compared to what you play bowsers fury on (jk) also play sonic adventure on steam with the Dreamcast conversion mod, probably way better than your sponsor game
Okay, gonna take my stand on this: When I first played Half-Life, it was the Steam version. I thought the HD models would actually make the existing models look HD, but I was wrong. They were just new models, but I actually stuck to them. I've seen some of the original models many times before, and I can see why people hate them. The MP5 was changed to an M4, but now I do see how the grunts originally had M4s in Half-Life alphas, so I didn't worry about it too much. The Glock also was a Colt, but I didn't worry about it either because it's still a pistol in any way. I have a WON version of Half-Life on my computer, without the High Definition Pack installed because I didn't feel like installing extra content just for the base game and I truly wanted to experience the game in its original glory. So yeah, WON HL without the HD models, Steam HL with the HD models. That's how I go. But I only decided to play without the HD models once, specifically to see what the LD models looked like on Counter-Strike. I thought I was going to see the weapon models used for pre-Steam versions of CS (because the knife was so high-poly), but it seems that it was only just the player models. Yeah, I indeed new the HD models for Counter-Strike were just Condition Zero's playermodels. But yeah, I do see that Steam Half-Life makes it easier for people to put HD models in their mods. But I've also played some mods that were made with the HD models in mind, as they were put in the mod directory itself. Yeah, even I've seen people port the PS2 HL's models to PC, with the name "Ultra Definition Pack" or something like that. A few mods I've played make use of this, like Induction, Echoes, and the recently-released Escape remaster. They weren't a problem to me, indeed. Oh yeah, I've also played Half-Life: Source with the HD models before, just so I could have a "consistent" experience with GoldSrc HL1. But yeah, I did know that the pack was fan-made from GameBanana. I also tried using that pack on HLDM:S as custom models, but the experience was odd since the weapon worldmodels were positioned at the characters' crotches. So yeah, after a while, I just stopped playing those games with the HD models altogether. One more thing: I'm not gonna complain about the sponsor, but there is one thing I'm gonna complain about: KILLING THOSE INNOCENT SCIENTISTS!!!!!!
"sometimes gordon is holding the patrioric glock 17 while other times hes holding the beretta m9" i guess the glock 17 (a non american gun) is more patriotic than the beretta m9 (the standard issue handgun for the us army during the events of half life)
16:15 Opposing Force definitely got its share of the HD models pre-Steam. If you look up old trailers made to advertise Blue Shift (or get a good look at the OG retail box with Barney on the cover), it was actually sold as a combo with Opposing Force with a CTF mode added to its multiplayer. The same adds made it a highlight to "enhance your [games]" with the HD pack. Interesting video. I saw the HD models early on when I got into Half Life content and with their packaging with Blue Shift I was sold on them pretty quickly. Spent a lot of modding years tinkering with HD packs and even finding some for some of the other OG mods like Azure Sheep/Point of View. The HD Barney is honestly my favorite over the SD one, I've grown attached to his look and as a representation of Mr. Calhoun. I still want a physical copy of the PS2 version of Half Life. Maybe one day.
To be honest, you can hate on things as much as you want, but I personally don't care about those HD models. If the game runs with them, it's fine, I don't care. Same if it runs without them. I just don't care. Like, if game works as it should and nothing was broken then what is there to complain about? And models... well, they are the models. They don't change how any of the game technical aspects work. That is why I don't care if they are there or not. As for the Half-Life Source. Same here. You can hate on it as much as you want but, I don't mind it too. I played every single Half-Life game, except Decay and those multiplayer based ones, and it was fun. And yes, I know about the bugs in HL Source, but did you know that in the very first release of that game there was no bugs at all? So yeah, the only legit way to play Half-Life Source, is to get original release version from.. um.. let's just say a free websites, if you know what I mean, and play it that way if you want bugs free version of that game. If not, then that's on you. I beat the game, had no problems with it and enjoyed it very much. As well as OG Half-Life 1 and rest of Half-Life games.
The beauty of risking taking as long as you did to voice over a scene from Better Call Saul that some people will click off of for completely misunderstanding what was going on. Love it.
4:05 Im 99% the M4 model is just a colt 727, an 80s predecessor to the classic M4 and M4A1 unpopular opinion too but I love the colt 727's sound, it sounds so awesome, and its model is probably the best looking model out of all the hd weapons I wish it didn't replace the mp5, it would be so cool if it was like its own gun.
5:50 Have you considered that perhaps it's the game rebooting that desyncs the game? I could see some recording program doing something like that (When the footage is being recorded, that is). To be honest, I always thought Opposing Force WAS the one made for HD models in mind, after all, the new weapons all fit right in with said models. I also expected you to not be so up in arms about said models lol. (Also in the 25th anniversary update the option is "enable original models" and is checked by default, instead of "enable High Definition models" and not checked by default).
You thinking that Opposing Force is more in-line with the HD pack makes sense, as Gearbox's Stephen Bahl, the guy who created the all HD weapon and HECU grunt models (and presumably their textures) also made most of the new models (and possibly the textures for those models) in Opposing Force; including, but not limited to all the Race X creatures and weapons, all the HECU soldiers, and other weapons such as the Displacer Cannon. He also probably made the M249 SAW and Sniper Rifle as they fit the HD pack's style quite well.
Sometimes I use the HD models purely for the shotgun sound. I don't care that it's badly recorded, it sounds like I'm splitting the sky open, and base Half Life's shotgun pump just sounds anemic. I'm not sure I've ever found a shotgun in gaming I like the sound of more.
13:12 TomSka lookin' ahh. Also, I wonder if the reason the pistol and SMG are inconsistent between LD and HD could be because perhaps the Beretta and M4 were at one point originally intended to be entirely new weapons for Blue Shift specifically, and not base Half-Life.
@@PurpleColonel But you were complaining about the Dreamcast version of Half Life only using one stick, which was industry standard at that time. You even point out that the dual stick dual shock was out a this time so there wasn't an excuse for the dreamcast not to have one. This man is just saying that even the dual stick controllers rarely used its second stick for aiming in FPS games in comparison. Hell, Alien Resurrection got completely shit on by critics for doing just that, and using what is now considered a modern control scheme. Sure the dreamcast having one stick is silly in hindsight but no one was really using a second stick back then. That didn't really become a thing until the PS2 standardized it, as most games were still developed with no sticks in mind for the playstation's original controller
@gamerboy218 I give Sony a lot of credit for having the foresight for dual analog, and regardless it meant sega's next gen console just didn't have one and died off pretty quick.
One thing that saddens me is that Sven Coop uses these by default, luckily there is a classic definition pack for Sven Coop that creates a ton of custom models in the original style.
The PS2 port was my first ever experience with Half-Life. I loved it, and for the longest time I never even knew the original PC models existed. These days I replay HL on PC once a year, and refuse to have the HD models on at all because yeah... they look awful.
Don't forget that the original Counter-Strike also has an option for HD Gearbox-made models for the characters. The original models are actually done by Chuck Jones, the guy who did a lot of aliens and human models in Half-Life. If you look at their faces, you can really see his exaggerated cartoony style, then you look at the Gearbox models and you see the neutral, more realistic faces and proportions that are present in Half-Life's HD models. I wish you actually went into more detail on why different designs were good or bad, I dunno, you just kind of youtuber'd it with "look at this thing. JUST LOOK AT IT" which doesn't always mean something. Observations like how the black soldier's stogie made the HECU seem more villainous/badass, or how the HD beret soldier has a cartoonishly exaggerated face despite everyone else having realistic faces. Or the change from red to black beret not only making his color scheme less interesting, but it's harder to identify the beret model at a glance (which I don't think has any sort of gameplay purpose, but design wise, it makes him stand out, which is the whole point of putting in the time to make more models in the first place, which was also harmed by giving the black soldier a beret too.) It might seem autistic but considering an artist had to model, animate, and texture each little thing in the game, there was probably a decent amount of thought put into "do I really need to add this detail?"

Would recommend in the future re-encoding your OBS clips with handbrake to CFR (Constant Frame Rate) before importing into premiere to fix the issue.
love how a solid minute of this video is dedicated to re-creating a scene from better call saul but making it about randy pitchford
That caught me off guard lol 😂
The "M4" in the HD pack is a Colt M727. The tells are the upper receiver having the solid carry handle with adjustable height and the 14.5" barrel with the upper half of the short round handguard. It's also period accurate for the time these models were made.
It always made more sense to me, fir HECU to have M727 then MP5 with GL. Probably why I'm in the minority that likes HD pack.
@@eoneedbut now the ammo sharing doesn't make sense :(
@Adriethyl Yes it doesn't, buy it didn't bother me much.

About the editor note, it's because somehow, sometimes, Adobe can't deal with Peak Framerate (or Variable Framerate, I don't remember), which is what I assume the source was recorded. You can use HandBrake to "fix" by changing it to Constant Framerate, but you will have to mess with the settings to make sure there's no quality loss

I just wish original Barney didn't look like an 80 year old man in a security officer suit or HD G-Man didn't have the goofiest smile pasted on his face. If one of those were fixed i would happily pick that texture pack.
Yeah I guess since he looks more like Barney from half life 2
Also, HD pack’s Beretta 92 is weird as fuck.

And actually looks like a SPAS-12 unlike the whatever the heck the original toy shotgun was (that is way off from a SPAS-12).
Who’s to say that it is?
I mean it’s SUPPOSED to be but idk
I mean, considering they were made by just one guy.. they're pretty good
As far as I can tell they weren't actually made by one guy, Stephen Bahl only did the soldiers and a few other models
I always had a soft spot for the HD pack's SPAS-12... but only because I adore the SPAS-12 in general.
SPAS 12 gang, rise up
The folded stock and the sound on HD shotgun is sexy af
It actually looks like a SPAS-12, the original is way off, like Valve shortened it and it's just hilarious.
>fires both barrels
I can get why people don't like and don't use the HD models, but I just use them anyway because that's because I didn't realise the other models existed because of them being pre-loaded ones when I first played and it just looks weird when I use the low def models
I also played with HD the first time. The textures make the game feel like a “rewinded” version of a modern Valve game to me, like you could take even a game as new as CS2 and feel like it’s an evolution of the HL1 HD textures. The original textures feel more like Doom to me, they seem darker or less lively/polished.
Here's some minor Details, errors, and miscellanea about and relating to the HD models that I just so happen to know in no particular order:
(I don't know how I've learnt this much, I've never used them once, even in mods that come with them built in)
In addition to the Snarks gaining antennae and yellow markings in the HD pack, whey also gained claw feet; a trait that carries over to Half-Life: Alyx's Snark.
Now onto the weird and bad:
All the Op4 grunt heads (barring the engie) have dislocated jaws and just look a bit worse in general shape-wise, they don't have any of the enemy HD grunts' animations, have many UV errors litterd all across the different parts of the models, the into_commander and medic models have hew face textures for some reason, the balaclava grunt is white and not black (Gearbox never made skin groups for Op4 grunts), and there's no unique shotgunner torso.

Though to be honest, I use them when I play opposing force because I like the idea of the HECU using different weapons like the AR or M9 rather than coincidentally the same weapons as the BM security detail.
it would make more sense to use sd though, considering that:
a: black mesa is mostly corridors and close quarters combat, so it’d figure that they use an mp5, a submachine gun
b: this was still during the mp5’s big heyday as THE smg, so of course everyone would use it
c: the hecu is a special ops unit, and for this mission they specifically go into black mesa, so they wouldn’t just use normal standard issue weaponry
d: black mesa is a government facility, so it would figure that they would use some of the same weapons as the military
e: the glock 17 was newfangled, but nearly everybody was praising it at the time, so of course a specialised government facility would use it, and of course a specialised spec ops unit would too
@@themilkman6969 also hecu uses the desert eagle, the g17 is only used by the guards and im pretty sure the mp5 is only used by hecu in the game too
I played Half-Life as a kid and loved it.

@@TheRabbitPoet Yeah I know some people in the half life community call them super definition models

Resident Evil Remake aged fantastically outside of the backdrops, you're insane
I'd even argue that REmake has more of an art style than the original game does. The world is hauntingly beautiful and gives off such good ambience that just isn't there in the original. And the Orignal Resi has definitely aged since the release of Resi 2 and 3 which improved the visuals in every way, and also still look impressive on a ps1 technical level.
Fr the remake is more immersive
The Dreamcast is looked back retrospectively fondly due to it having a lot of substantial instances of things that have carried over to modern consoles:
Internet connection where you could actually buy things (I have no idea if anyone actually used that).
- DLC was for very few games, and subjectively isn't a step forward in gaming
- it's a 6th generation console that released too early, making it the least performant 6th generation console
- no dvd playback (which is almost the sole reason the ps2 was so popular)

Ok, but counterpoint: the Dreamcast is awesome. Its memory card acts as a mini console. You can install officially sanctioned homebrew onto as well as acting like a second screen, and the controller uses a Hall-Effect analog stick so it never gets stick drift. Plus, as you said in the video, 2 analog sticks wasn't a standard yet, and this is still far better than the N64 controller comfort-wise. It was also a major pioneer in online console gaming. Microsoft actually helped create the system, and it was a heavy inspiration for the original Xbox.

man all these are luxury problems compared to what we had to endure in germany with robots instead of soldiers, no blood when hitting meelee or with guns, not even alien colored and people just sitting down when you shoot them
The hd shotgun looks miles better than the original
The original model is completely out of proportion compared to a spas 12
The hd model actually resembles it though
Holy Crap, PurpleColonel got a SPONSOR AWWW MY LOOOOOOOOOOOOORRRRD!!!!!
(Hey good for you man!)
ngl, the chicanery bit was amazong
I always play Half Life and Opposing force with the standard-def models. But whenever I play Blue Shift I always use the HD models since they were designed for it.

this whole video feels like a schizo rant
It is
a guy ranting about optional models that imo make the game look better

13:12 that's not Gordon, that's the WarOwl
I wouldnt mind the AR-15 models if they had a separate ammo pool, i find it hard to believe the military is using 9mm ARs or 5.56x45mm pistols.
The HD Shotgun is so goddamn juicy, I love it. The SD shotgun looks like a gnarled turd.
This was he moment Purple Colonel became Chuck McGill
22 minutes when it could have just boiled down to "I hate the models because I think they're bad" with no substance whatsoever, that's some classic HD models discourse right there
Yup, agree
Yeahhhh I caught myself rolling my eyes at a lot of the stuff hes talking about.... The ammo pickups.... Like dude
Guess he's running out of things to talk about.
is the point of the rifle and pistol sharing ammo pools not making sense with the hd pack since the default model is an smg considered "they're bad" or like what lol
@@GreenTeaTheTea that's what I meant I was like.... Seriously this is his complaint 😭😭😭
I think the Automatic Rifle in the HD pack is based off the CAR-15 with an M203 attachment.
too long to be a CAR-15

Oddly enough, the Dreamcast controller was the basis for the original Xbox controller. Just add another stick on the right and it's golden.
I think I hold more hate in my heart for Xbox than the dreamcast
The chicanery bit is about the best thing i've seen on TH-cam in about 4 years. I went from laughing my ass off to my jaw dropping as soon and you said USB drive cus I knew exactly which Gearbox employee you were about to talk about, then back to laughing. Bravo.
Jetset radio looks amazing my man, and the controller isn’t that bad looking compared to what you play bowsers fury on (jk) also play sonic adventure on steam with the Dreamcast conversion mod, probably way better than your sponsor game
Okay, gonna take my stand on this:
When I first played Half-Life, it was the Steam version.
"sometimes gordon is holding the patrioric glock 17 while other times hes holding the beretta m9"
i guess the glock 17 (a non american gun) is more patriotic than the beretta m9 (the standard issue handgun for the us army during the events of half life)
16:15 Opposing Force definitely got its share of the HD models pre-Steam.
As well as OG Half-Life 1 and rest of Half-Life games.
well different models mean different hitboxes but thats it
Unpopular Opinion: I like the HD Models more than the PS1-Esque Low-Poly ones
11:01. I don't care about the dreamcast, but considering you look like a discord mod, you have no right to be critising anyone other than yourself.
The beauty of risking taking as long as you did to voice over a scene from Better Call Saul that some people will click off of for completely misunderstanding what was going on. Love it.
4:05 Im 99% the M4 model is just a colt 727, an 80s predecessor to the classic M4 and M4A1
unpopular opinion too but I love the colt 727's sound, it sounds so awesome, and its model is probably the best looking model out of all the hd weapons
I wish it didn't replace the mp5, it would be so cool if it was like its own gun.
Got all the classic half lifes for like $3 and I gotta say, half life source has the best hd models.
I very much enjoyed the hd models, but more importantly I enjoyed all the classic games.
Ah, the classic tale of the HD models vs standard the models. Thank you for reminding me why I hate the Half-Life community.
Same
i played half life 1 vr and had to activate hd models because my eyes started to hurt
@@Gulliblepikmin Yeah that was my basis, though the map textures or maybe it's the lighting kinda fit the HD pack too.
Tbh HD models are overhated
So what is valve's models are better the HD models are still really good and they have a lot of charm
The PS2's Decay mode was delightful, though even better when modders added it into the PC
4:20 most AR-15 style rifles fire both .223 and 5.56, 5.56 which is NATO standard but so is 9mm
I gotta say that M-4 was so satisfying to mag dump on a room full of grunts and aliens.Felt like Dutch from Predator.
I like HD models and don't understand why people hate them
because reddit said they suck so they must suck
I like the way the scientists in the low def look like cartoons
@@kaaos_1 you know that reddit is not an entity but it consists of people, right? a site can't say it sucks but A LOT of people say it sucks
13:12 TomSka lookin' ahh.
Also, I wonder if the reason the pistol and SMG are inconsistent between LD and HD could be because perhaps the Beretta and M4 were at one point originally intended to be entirely new weapons for Blue Shift specifically, and not base Half-Life.
completely forgetting most ps1 fps with dualshock support didn't even really use the second stick proper either.
hl1 was only on ps2, no way the ps1 could've handled it
@@PurpleColonel But you were complaining about the Dreamcast version of Half Life only using one stick, which was industry standard at that time.
On the contrary, it's great! people won't get used to good models.
bro has beef with the dreamcast
The PS2 port was my first ever experience with Half-Life. I loved it, and for the longest time I never even knew the original PC models existed. These days I replay HL on PC once a year, and refuse to have the HD models on at all because yeah... they look awful.
You've become more stupid.
0:33 are you austrian?
Or the change from red to black beret not only making his color scheme less interesting, but it's harder to identify the beret model at a glance (which I don't think has any sort of gameplay purpose, but design wise, it makes him stand out, which is the whole point of putting in the time to make more models in the first place, which was also harmed by giving the black soldier a beret too.) It might seem autistic but considering an artist had to model, animate, and texture each little thing in the game, there was probably a decent amount of thought put into "do I really need to add this detail?"

whats with the weird hyper focus on the dreamcast?
my take is the hd guard, scientist and gman models are blegh
the hd models for the hgrunts, zombies, aliens n weapons are all way better than the standard ones. (hd spas-12 my beloved)
the dreamcast port turned gordon into that swedish guy that eats a pepper and drinks a bunch of sweet chili sauce after calling himself a "hard man"
I actually liked most of the HD models for the guns, becuase It seemed more realistic like the crowbar... no tool that is out of the factory is gonna peak prestine condition I have handled tools of various varity with multiple individuals and never do I see them not get immediatly scratched and slightly dented. as for the NPCs those where absolutley terrifying, Esspecially barney except for the enemys my favorite was the zombie. But yeah over all the contrast of the sudden slanted tonel shift is way to striking and apparent to alter my perception of the game and de-emerses me despite me saying I said it made it look more realistic. also the berreta sucks fuck the berreta
