This movie wasn't trying to be Deadpool, it was trying to be Guardians of the Galaxy. That's probably why they tried to make the characters act like they're all close to each other despite barely even knowing each other: One of Guardians' main themes is "found family." It also explains all of the licensed music.
The best part is that Warner Bros. literally hired the director of Guardians of the Galaxy to make the sequel to this movie, and the sequel fucking rules because James Gunn just did his own thing instead of trying to artificially replicate the tone and style of his other films.
Only that in GotG, the music was the connection between Peter and his mom. Here it’s just “Hey! You recognise this song, right?”. But yeah, both are about “bad guys” accepting to work together and… that’s where the similarities end.

It really sucks because the Enchantress had a really cool design, as well as some pretty cool moments with special effects, like her transformation scene, and the actress even did a good job at moving her body in these creepy, unnatural ways when she was the Enchantress, but then she barely does anything in the entire movie
That spooky-hand transformation scene is probably the only genuinely cool thing that happened in the movie. Like, the editing team popped off for that one specific special effect, and that was it.
My favorite idiotic decision of this movie is that the whole point of the suicide squad was to have a team of shady people you could use to do shady business and don't be blamed for it, and what's their first mission? Saving the world from the blue laser in the sky

I don't know if anyone has pointed this out but I'm pretty sure the reason that there's so much licensed music in this movie is because whoever did the soundtrack saw Guardians of the Galaxy and didn't realize that the music was being used in a meaningful way. It's like they just heard a bunch of the hit songs and were like "Oh, shit! This movie is good because of all the sick tunes bro".
It’s been well documented that after the success of the initial trailer (which played Bohemian Rhapsody) and after the poor response to BvS, WB tried to mold Suicide Squad (which was already well into post-production) into something that would more closely resemble Guardians of the Galaxy and Deadpool. WB even got a trailer company to edit the finished movie.

I think THE Suicide Squad did an amazing job with giving an excuse for Harley's inclusion, she was on the team that was supposed to die, but she ended up being one of the biggest assets to the real team once she was rescued
The best part about the licensed music is that they put out an entire album of original songs with big artists to support the movie, and none of them are used outside the credits

HQ being upset that he killed innocent kids was actually one of the good parts for her character. That's how she is to a weird degree. She's midfight with Black Canary when she realizes she is preggers and literally will not fight. She's twisted from her old non-insane self but loves kids still and wants them to be safe. I'm betting that line is left over from the good drama we did not get.
That scene in The Suicide Squad (the new one, not the 2016 one) where Harley just instantly shoots the dictator guy she'd previously had the hots for as soon as he starts monologuing about feeding children to Starro is honestly one of my favorite parts of that whole film, and the worst thing about it is that I technically have to give credit to Suicide Squad 2016 for establishing that as one of her character traits.
@@3n3my33 My personal headcanon for the DCEU is that the Crowbar Incident (TM) was the tipping point for Harley's motivation to split up with the Joker because she genuinely felt remorseful for her part in Robin's death (she probably assumed Joker was just gonna take the kid hostage and/or scare him a little bit), and the reason why she makes such a big deal about refusing to kill kids in all of her future appearances is because of the guilt and trauma she has about that moment. (And yes, I'm fully aware that this makes no sense if you think about it for too long, but the old DCEU continuity is a mess anyway, so who gives a shit.)
You say "that's just how she is to a weird degree" despite her never having this as a character trait in any other adaptation before this one. It's even crazy because in this movie universe she is complicit in the death of Robin who, is a child. I don't care if they wanted her to have this trait for the movies or even continuing on in her overall character outside of them but to have that kind of cognitive dissonance of a child murderer shaming another child murderer for murdering a child is utterly ridiculous. There's no defending this decision in story telling, it's just bad writing.
The best rebuke to the way Harley was so objectified in this movie is that literally the first words out of her mouth in The Suicide Squad are her announcing that she just took a dump.

my favourite things about this movie are a) killer croc's actor can't movie in his prosthetics, but they try to make him do push ups, so if you pay attention he's just kneeling down and bobbing his head up and down, and b) when rick flagg is given an ID badge to wear, he pins it to the cuff of his t-shirt sleeve instead of the neck of his shirt or his front pocket, a thing no human has ever done. It's such a small thing, but it's so jarringly weird when you notice it.
I don't even think they played "Spirit in the Sky" because they were in the sky. I think they played it because the team was finally all together and someone at WB clearly wanted audiences to treat this movie like it was Guardians of the Galaxy. That was the moment that broke me. I mentally checked out the last 10% of my brain that was somehow managing to hold on.

I've said it once, and I'll say it again: I find it really funny that "Suicide Squad" was made as a response to "Guardians of the Galaxy." Like, there are so many parallels but done so much worse. The licensed music, the use of morally grey anti-heroes, the "We'Re FaMiLy" line. And they wanted it to be GotG SO HARD that they hired JAMES GUNN to make the sequel.
David Ayer was originally gonna do the sequel but dropped out probably because he saw how they butchered his movie. James Gunn was fired from Marvel and went over to DC, not sure if WB called him first.

I had a crush on someone my freshman year of college around the time this movie came out. I asked her what she thought of Suicide Squad and she said "omg it was perfect, sooooo good" and my romantic feelings evaporated almost instantaneously. This is one of the few movies that is so bad it's actually offensive. This and R*se of Sk*walker lmao.
Don’t get me wrong, Suicide Squad is a bad movie, but it didn’t offend me the same way TROS did. Josstice League offended me more than Suicide Squad because WB took advantage of a real person’s death to mess with Zack’s vision.

See, I can buy the Squad surviving the initial helicopter crash - the movie has to happen, after all, and a world which has reptilian hybrids and magical zombie plagues bears some suspension of disbelief. The second crash is lazy just because both parties seemingly survive without even a scratch - Harley should at least make it out of that one with _more than superficial_ injuries. And right when I’m finished complaining about that one, the third crash happens, which has no consequences whatsoever. Fuck this movie.

And Deadshot isn't even supposed to be stoic. He's usually very charming and charismatic as can be. Total ladies man. It's just that he's is also a completely amoral murderer, and Will Smith does not play characters like that on principle.

It was unique in the sense that it made him materialistic, which is different than how the joker is usually portrayed. But in making him materialistic, it makes him like all the other’s in Batman’s rogue gallery, especially those who just steal shiny stuff because they like how it looks. I’m hoping for better portrayals in the future!

With the leaked image of Joker getting angry at Harley in the helicopter, that scene of her looking dejected on the car, and the deleted/unused footage of Joker with a burnt face dropping a grenade from the finale, I 100% agree with Marcus’ hypothesis that they just broke up in the original script.
I'm pretty sure it's been confirmed that in the original cut he literally pushes her out of the helicopter so that he can get away. Which is both, A.) a very Joker thing to do, and B.) a damn good reason for her to feel dejected and upset.

Harley Quinn is way more useful in every other iteration of her character, even in the 90s she had heightened agility and resistance to certain chemicals
Also in the comics the suicide squad often included less powerful villains who just agreed to the terms, it's just that usually they were killed off very early to show how expendable everyone on the team really was. So Harley being there doesn't confuse me, it's more just that you knew she was going to have plot armor thanks to being one of DC's most popular characters.
The fact that WB thought it would be a good idea to have a movie edited by a TRAILER editing company, rather than do what the DIRECTOR wanted to do, shows how little trust they showed in their filmmakers. Ayer’s style isn’t even for me, but I feel so bad for the guy as a filmmaker.

It upsets me whenever Harley is portrayed in a way that ignores the facts that she’s a Psychiatrist (even if she’s insane) and an Olympian-level gymnast. She’s both very smart and excellent in combat, but that seems to be forgotten sometimes

I normally don't care for overly negative critique, but your all of these notes are spot on. It is really hard to find any positives. I remember seeing it in the theaters and on the fist shot having unreadable text and the title being poorly revealed, not very readable, and on screen way to short of a time. That was the first shot, and one of the more important shots in the movie, and they edited it like they had never seen a opening title before in there life. How many people in the production saw this shot and said "yea, that will work." And it never got any better. I used raz the Transformers franchise as the most poorly written and edited block busters of a generation, but this is another level.
I feel like the entire DC cinematic agenda can be boiled down to: "We want to make the Avengers but we don't really want to make movies for all these characters individually."
This obsession with solo movies just needs to stop. For real. Cinema lived decades with uncountable millions of movies without solo movies before (and the ones who had was bad viewed), but then MCU created this formula and, boom, "LORD OF THE RINGS SHOULD HAD TWELVE SOLO MOVIES BEFORE EVEN THE FIRST MOVIE, SO I CAN PROPERLY CARE WITH THE MIDDLE-EARTH AND THE FELLOWSHIP!!!" @@RodrickMarsMoon the reason why is that they are adaptations of different mediums, LotR is as closed to the BOOK as it can be in a film, however the Avengers are comics, and how did they started? With solo issues of the heroes, nobody is clamoring for solo films for the Fantastic Four or X-men because the team origins is close to the characters, they are similar in powers or abilities (counting the mutation aspect, not the different powers). The Avengers, the Justice League and many teams like that are comprised of unique members with distinct abilities, personalities, stories and origins. That's why the solos matter
I NEED to see a movie with a soundtrack that plays rap whenever a black character is on screen, mariachi when it's a mexican, dudebro country (or at least boomer rock) for white guys, and kpop with asians. Also if it's a female character the vocalists must be female. They ideally should be singing about being a woman, or at least mention that they are. Anything else leaves me confused and is simply not worth my time or money. Get on this, hollywood, it's a gold mine waiting.

I remember seeing this with a bunch of my friends in high school because one of them was able to get early tickets through connections from his parents or something. I think I wanted to like it so badly that I made myself ignore everything I didn’t like about it, so I thought it was great after it was over. About a week later I stopped lying to myself and admitted it was pretty bad.

You know what would improve this movie? Swapping the Enchantress going nuts scene with the assembling the team scene. Her and her Brother start rampaging, the Superheroes either can't be found or are busy with other threats. Turn to this theorised suicide squad as the only option. They don't have time to be discerning because of the urgency, so they literally grab every jailed villain they can find and turn them loose on Enchantress.
When he when over all the movies and changed the scores, he gave Pacific Rim 2 a 1/10 and said it was the worst movie he's ever seen. However this is the first 1/10 he has given in this series.
The portrayal of Harley Quinn in the remake is more accurate with combat in my opinion. Sure she’s “just a girl” but she’s insanely well rounded, which is why I think she’s on par with the other characters. But in the first version she’s just kinda “sex appeal” Quinn instead of “roller derby neck snapping” Quinn.
The most that I took away from this movie was the line “What are we? Some kinda Suicide Squad?”. The amount of times that I’ve said this line is ungodly.

This movie wasn't trying to be Deadpool, it was trying to be Guardians of the Galaxy. That's probably why they tried to make the characters act like they're all close to each other despite barely even knowing each other: One of Guardians' main themes is "found family."

It really sucks because the Enchantress had a really cool design, as well as some pretty cool moments with special effects, like her transformation scene, and the actress even did a good job at moving her body in these creepy, unnatural ways when she was the Enchantress, but then she barely does anything in the entire movie
That spooky-hand transformation scene is probably the only genuinely cool thing that happened in the movie. Like, the editing team popped off for that one specific special effect, and that was it.

I don't know if anyone has pointed this out but I'm pretty sure the reason that there's so much licensed music in this movie is because whoever did the soundtrack saw Guardians of the Galaxy and didn't realize that the music was being used in a meaningful way. It's like they just heard a bunch of the hit songs and were like "Oh, shit! This movie is good because of all the sick tunes bro".
It’s been well documented that after the success of the initial trailer (which played Bohemian Rhapsody) and after the poor response to BvS, WB tried to mold Suicide Squad (which was already well into post-production) into something that would more closely resemble Guardians of the Galaxy and Deadpool. WB even got a trailer company to edit the finished movie.

I think THE Suicide Squad did an amazing job with giving an excuse for Harley's inclusion, she was on the team that was supposed to die, but she ended up being one of the biggest assets to the real team once she was rescued
The best part about the licensed music is that they put out an entire album of original songs with big artists to support the movie, and none of them are used outside the credits
they even had a music video starring Jared Leto as the joker.

HQ being upset that he killed innocent kids was actually one of the good parts for her character. That's how she is to a weird degree. She's midfight with Black Canary when she realizes she is preggers and literally will not fight. She's twisted from her old non-insane self but loves kids still and wants them to be safe. I'm betting that line is left over from the good drama we did not get.
That scene in The Suicide Squad (the new one, not the 2016 one) where Harley just instantly shoots the dictator guy she'd previously had the hots for as soon as he starts monologuing about feeding children to Starro is honestly one of my favorite parts of that whole film, and the worst thing about it is that I technically have to give credit to Suicide Squad 2016 for establishing that as one of her character traits.

@@3n3my33 My personal headcanon for the DCEU is that the Crowbar Incident (TM) was the tipping point for Harley's motivation to split up with the Joker because she genuinely felt remorseful for her part in Robin's death (she probably assumed Joker was just gonna take the kid hostage and/or scare him a little bit), and the reason why she makes such a big deal about refusing to kill kids in all of her future appearances is because of the guilt and trauma she has about that moment. (And yes, I'm fully aware that this makes no sense if you think about it for too long, but the old DCEU continuity is a mess anyway, so who gives a shit.)
You say "that's just how she is to a weird degree" despite her never having this as a character trait in any other adaptation before this one. It's even crazy because in this movie universe she is complicit in the death of Robin who, is a child. I don't care if they wanted her to have this trait for the movies or even continuing on in her overall character outside of them but to have that kind of cognitive dissonance of a child murderer shaming another child murderer for murdering a child is utterly ridiculous. There's no defending this decision in story telling, it's just bad writing.

my favourite things about this movie are a) killer croc's actor can't movie in his prosthetics, but they try to make him do push ups, so if you pay attention he's just kneeling down and bobbing his head up and down, and b) when rick flagg is given an ID badge to wear, he pins it to the cuff of his t-shirt sleeve instead of the neck of his shirt or his front pocket, a thing no human has ever done. It's such a small thing, but it's so jarringly weird when you notice it.
I don't even think they played "Spirit in the Sky" because they were in the sky. I think they played it because the team was finally all together and someone at WB clearly wanted audiences to treat this movie like it was Guardians of the Galaxy. That was the moment that broke me. I mentally checked out the last 10% of my brain that was somehow managing to hold on.
So if this continuity's Batman is willing to kill, why is this Joker still alive?

I find it really funny that "Suicide Squad" was made as a response to "Guardians of the Galaxy." Like, there are so many parallels but done so much worse. The licensed music, the use of morally grey anti-heroes, the "We'Re FaMiLy" line. And they wanted it to be GotG SO HARD that they hired JAMES GUNN to make the sequel.
David Ayer was originally gonna do the sequel but dropped out probably because he saw how they butchered his movie. James Gunn was fired from Marvel and went over to DC, not sure if WB called him first.
From what i've seen and heard, the new Suicide Squad is actually enjoyable too

Don’t get me wrong, Suicide Squad is a bad movie, but it didn’t offend me the same way TROS did. Josstice League offended me more than Suicide Squad because WB took advantage of a real person’s death to mess with Zack’s vision.
This is why I consider Suicide Squad to not only be the worst superhero movie I've seen, but the worst movie overall. Movies like "The Room" or "Catwoman" at least makes you laugh over how comically bad they are, Suicide Squad however is both incompetent AND boring which is the worst thing a movie can be.

See, I can buy the Squad surviving the initial helicopter crash - the movie has to happen, after all, and a world which has reptilian hybrids and magical zombie plagues bears some suspension of disbelief. The second crash is lazy just because both parties seemingly survive without even a scratch - Harley should at least make it out of that one with _more than superficial_ injuries. And right when I’m finished complaining about that one, the third crash happens, which has no consequences whatsoever.

one of my weirdest problems with Joker was that he was like insanely luxurious and decked out in all sorts of jewelry. I’ve always thought he was a character who didn’t care about the reward but the thrill instead.

It was unique in the sense that it made him materialistic, which is different than how the joker is usually portrayed. But in making him materialistic, it makes him like all the other’s in Batman’s rogue gallery, especially those who just steal shiny stuff because they like how it looks. I’m hoping for better portrayals in the future!

With the leaked image of Joker getting angry at Harley in the helicopter, that scene of her looking dejected on the car, and the deleted/unused footage of Joker with a burnt face dropping a grenade from the finale, I 100% agree with Marcus’ hypothesis that they just broke up in the original script.
Don't know why they didn't just keep things the same. Ending would have made more sense. She breaks up with him and gets back with him a lot.
I'm pretty sure it's been confirmed that in the original cut he literally pushes her out of the helicopter so that he can get away. Which is both, A.) a very Joker thing to do, and B.) a damn good reason for her to feel dejected and upset.

Also in the comics the suicide squad often included less powerful villains who just agreed to the terms, it's just that usually they were killed off very early to show how expendable everyone on the team really was. So Harley being there doesn't confuse me, it's more just that you knew she was going to have plot armor thanks to being one of DC's most popular characters.

The fact that WB thought it would be a good idea to have a movie edited by a TRAILER editing company, rather than do what the DIRECTOR wanted to do, shows how little trust they showed in their filmmakers. Ayer’s style isn’t even for me, but I feel so bad for the guy as a filmmaker.

It upsets me whenever Harley is portrayed in a way that ignores the facts that she’s a Psychiatrist (even if she’s insane) and an Olympian-level gymnast. She’s both very smart and excellent in combat, but that seems to be forgotten sometimes

I normally don't care for overly negative critique, but your all of these notes are spot on. It is really hard to find any positives.
I remember seeing it in the theaters and on the fist shot having unreadable text and the title being poorly revealed, not very readable, and on screen way to short of a time. That was the first shot, and one of the more important shots in the movie, and they edited it like they had never seen a opening title before in there life. How many people in the production saw this shot and said "yea, that will work." And it never got any better.
I used raz the Transformers franchise as the most poorly written and edited block busters of a generation, but this is another level.
It feels like WB just gave this movie to an AI and told it to make the movie like guardians of the galaxy.
I feel like the entire DC cinematic agenda can be boiled down to: "We want to make the Avengers but we don't really want to make movies for all these characters individually."
Basically DC is doing the universe in this order
Make The Avengers (ex. Justice League, BVS, BOP, TSS) -----------> Then Make solo films.
They actually had a single Superman movie before jumping straight into BvS, which is unreal
This obsession with solo movies just needs to stop. For real.
Cinema lived decades with uncountable millions of movies without solo movies before (and the ones who had was bad viewed), but then MCU created this formula and, boom, "LORD OF THE RINGS SHOULD HAD TWELVE SOLO MOVIES BEFORE EVEN THE FIRST MOVIE, SO I CAN PROPERLY CARE WITH THE MIDDLE-EARTH AND THE FELLOWSHIP!!!"

There are so many bad decisions there because you could make small scaled solo movies with lower budgets for individual characters and hopefully get a good profit in return and then jump to the higher budget team up movie. Why would you avoid all that? Oh right, money
@@RodrickMarsMoon the reason why is that they are adaptations of different mediums, LotR is as closed to the BOOK as it can be in a film, however the Avengers are comics, and how did they started? With solo issues of the heroes, nobody is clamoring for solo films for the Fantastic Four or X-men because the team origins is close to the characters, they are similar in powers or abilities (counting the mutation aspect, not the different powers). The Avengers, the Justice League and many teams like that are comprised of unique members with distinct abilities, personalities, stories and origins. That's why the solos matter
I NEED to see a movie with a soundtrack that plays rap whenever a black character is on screen, mariachi when it's a mexican, dudebro country (or at least boomer rock) for white guys, and kpop with asians.
Also if it's a female character the vocalists must be female. They ideally should be singing about being a woman, or at least mention that they are.
Anything else leaves me confused and is simply not worth my time or money. Get on this, hollywood, it's a gold mine waiting.
Thanks now I want to make a movie with good idea and story, but in the execution, everything shall be made really badly and not how it should be done.

I think I wanted to like it so badly that I made myself ignore everything I didn’t like about it, so I thought it was great after it was over. About a week later I stopped lying to myself and admitted it was pretty bad.

You know what would improve this movie? Swapping the Enchantress going nuts scene with the assembling the team scene.
Her and her Brother start rampaging, the Superheroes either can't be found or are busy with other threats.
Turn to this theorised suicide squad as the only option. They don't have time to be discerning because of the urgency, so they literally grab every jailed villain they can find and turn them loose on Enchantress.
A milestone for Marcus for this being the first ever, 1/10 movie score. And it totally fits

The portrayal of Harley Quinn in the remake is more accurate with combat in my opinion. Sure she’s “just a girl” but she’s insanely well rounded, which is why I think she’s on par with the other characters. But in the first version she’s just kinda “sex appeal” Quinn instead of “roller derby neck snapping” Quinn.
