Making a 3D printed sign | Cut to the Point collab

  • Today’s video is a collaboration with Piotr Tocyznski of the Cut to the Point TH-cam channel. Over on CTTP, Piotr teaches lessons on the artistic and technical sides of digital video editing.
    So for his end of the deal, we worked together on a tips video for DIY/maker video editors, featuring some film editing tips I’ve learned over the years. You can see his video here: • Speed/Duration Setting...
    For my end of the deal, we’re going to make a raised-letter sign of his logo. I’ve made signs before on this channel by cutting wooden letters on a jigsaw or bandsaw. But this time, it’s different. The challenge for this one is that Piotr lives in Poland! So I need to produce this sign in a way that gets it across the ocean as safely and cheaply as possible.
    That’s why for this sign, I’m going to try printing the letters out on my 3D printer. I got this thing back in October, and I’ve used it for a lot of random stuff, but not for anything that needs to look nice. So figuring out how to smooth and finish these 3D-printed letters will be another challenge.
    To save on shipping costs, I’m going to be focusing on the letters only. Once they’re done, I’ll throw them in a box, and Piotr can assemble the thing in Poland. So that’s another challenge: Working together on a single, physical project with a guy 4,500 miles away.
    Let’s give it a try.

    Came here from Cut to the Point. I took a lot of classes in industrial design in college, a lot of it still helps me and I would love a shop someday. I'm a filmmaker so I think I'll definitely will be watching your videos. Subscribed.

      Good luck with your quest for a shop! If space is a concern, I highly recommend getting inspiration from Adrian Preda, if you haven't seen his stuff already. The guy is a master, but his shop is tiny in comparison to most. And it used to be even smaller! th-cam.com/video/kzmrSBL-yHU/w-d-xo.html
      And thanks for the sub! Subscribed to you as well! Take care!

    Great video! Seeing the whole process and trial and errors you went through is definitely interesting and insightful. As a thought, printing in ABS and treating it with an acetone vapor bath can be one way of smoothing out the layers. It might be a fun thing to toy with before the next project that might need polishing.

    • @AndrewReuter
      @AndrewReuter  5 ปีที่แล้ว +1

      Thank you for the kind words! Good call on ABS. I've been hesitant to dive into a new material, but I definitely have to just give it a try at some point here. Especially because of the vapor smoothing...

    wrapping eat letter in a paper towel them something cheaper (newspaper, kept packing paper, etc) then one bigger zip bag or, if you're rich enough, a vacuum bag. Would definitely test things with the vacuum bag before sending- the shrinking action could be too much on the stuff inside.

    • @AndrewReuter
      @AndrewReuter  5 ปีที่แล้ว

      Oh yeah, good call on both! The paper towel would be nice for protecting the letters against any ink transfer from the newspaper.

  • @AFAndersen

    Yellow is notoriously bad at covering because of low pigment%. I would probably have tried to print in yellow and then spray yellow over after. I know that when you're in the project it feels like "just one more try/attempt", but overall it might have saved some time.
    Loved all the walking up/down stairs in high speed, was really funny!

    Great work! Next time try to use Plasti Dip instead of regular spray paint. Plasti Dip may be good in some cases like 3D printed objects.
    BTW I'm here from Peter's channel.

    • @AndrewReuter
      @AndrewReuter  5 ปีที่แล้ว +2

      Thank you! Good to know, will definitely give Plasti-Dip a try. Seems like it'd be good to be able to dip some smaller objects where spray might not reach. Nice work on your videos!

      Regarding scheduling: Piotr and I actually started talking about the above collab in the middle of summer 2018. Because of my project obligations/feet dragging, I didn’t even get started on it till December. Luckily Piotr was extremely chill about things, which helped it remain fun. So I’m totally with you there on the scheduling!
