    As a black woman, I was soooo lucky to have a dermatologist smart enough to recognize I had rosacea acne. Other derms just didn’t consider it because my skin is brown and they associate rosacea with white people. Got me on azelaic acid, had me change my diet and switch to non-irritating products-cleared it up within 4 months. I am caramel colored but literally *anything* turns my skin red, even the smell of essential oils. The rosacea diagnosis changed my entire life.
    Holy smokes: I didn’t know the ph balance of cleanser was critical for rosacea.

    • @emily_257
      @emily_257 2 ปีที่แล้ว +15

      Wow I had the same experience! I’m Latina and when I went to this derm for the first time she said I had rosacea. I then said, “I thought only white people get rosacea?” She said that’s a huge misconception and people of color often get “shafted” by the medical system and ignored.

    • @emily_257
      @emily_257 2 ปีที่แล้ว +18

      @@vibgulati my dermatologist recommended just washing my face with warm water in the morning and vanicream products for moisturizing my body and face. (I wash my face in the evening with a gentle cleanser). If that’s unavailable, even Vaseline works as a moisturizer . She said not to exfoliate because it will irritate my skin. For body wash, she recommended kiss my face olive oil bar soap. It was really about keeping it as simple and natural as possible. For medications, she prescribed me azeliac acid (you can get your own at The Ordinary) and metronidazole cream. For food, avoid spicy food, processed food, and things high in sugar. For home, avoid using fragrance and dyes in things like laundry detergent. I hope this helps!

    Check your vitamin levels!! I’m basically rosacea free now. I know there’s no cure but the only thing I changed is I started taking multivitamins. My vitamin D levels were 19. I bought vit d and a multivitamin and I use the eucerin rosacea cream. I used to have pustules and so much redness only on my cheeks and it was worse on one side. Now I only get a very light rosy glow on my cheeks. Thought I’d share what helped me.

      The medical industry in general seems to leave darker complexions out of things. And most medical providers don't know that people can need to be treated differently with the same illness because their ethnicity is different than white! They are really only taught how to treat white people.

    Such a helpful video! I recently got diagnosed with type 1 and 2 and for anyone struggling with sunscreen, I have to second that the EltaMD UV Clear is amazing!! I actually enjoy putting it on and it soothes my skin. I use the tinted version. I also recommend the Vanicream cleanser and the Neutrogena fragrance free hydroboost extra dry skin gel cream. Not a fun skin condition to have at all and I'm still very much in my journey. Would love a video on the laser options!

    I watched your retinoid video and you guys mentioned at the end that people with rosacea should think twice before using it. I'd love it if you could do a follow up video on other treatments to avoid for differing types of rosacea (i.e. chemical peels? Retinoids? Etc.)

    “Avoid anything that anyone with eczema would avoid,” unfortunately I have both rosacea and eczema 🥲
    Thankfully, I don’t get eczema on my face, but this is super informative to those who have this condition!

      I have both also, Connie! Just an atopic wonderland, aren't we? LOL My eczema is atypical in that it is not "in the creases" like the books always say. I have patches on my hips, my back, and my abdomen.

    I just want to say THANK YOU!! My husband has been fighting, what I think is, Papulopustular Rosacea. He has seen his primary that diagnosed him with something else and gave him creams that did not help. Because I’ve been doing my research and thankfully stumbled upon you guys, I bought the products you recommend. Those being: Cetaphil redness relief day time and night time moisturizer, Prosacea, and Naturium azeliac acid 10%. His skin has cleared up astonishingly within a month! I wish I could add his before and after pictures on here!

    Thanks for sharing, all great info; anytime anyone gets a flare up (type 1) they immediately get asked 'are you ok' cause anyone around you thinks your about to pass out for being so red. I'm a mild case of type 1, prescription meds are harsh on my skin always trying to find more gentler products to use.

    Thank you!! so much for the information in this video
    (I've been looking on and off for effective/knowledgeable information about rosacea for maybe a little over a year, I started to really have the type 1 symptoms about 2 years ago.)
    It's not easy with my medical insurance and the pandemic but hopefully I can see a dermatologist sometime this year and start to get treatment, until then now I know some product ingredients to look for and what to avoid.
    Thank you!

    I was diagnosed last April at age 37 - I always thought what showed up on my face was just irritation, but nope. Gentle skin care, protecting skin barrier, Soolantra, diet changes and my skin is quite ok. I also did laser out little capillaries out of my face so for now it is under control. Also learned recently that products with urea are no no, which is interesting. Great video!

    Thank you, Drs. Maxfield and Shah. Y’all are not only thorough but so very pleasant to watch. You both come off as truly caring (but fun too!). There’s a lot of synergy between you-but y’all already knew, I’m sure. 😃😃
    I’m wondering if you’ve looked into IF. I’ve tried Intermittent Fasting on two separate occasions for health and weight loss. Although it’s done wonders (lost 30 lbs. in 6 weeks) it’s also been counterproductive with regard to the Rosacea-setting me back to the point of needing antibiotics for several months. I found a TEDx Talk where the speaker mentioned that people with any autoimmune disorder cannot go into IF and reach Autophagy. Any comments?

    I was diagnosed with rosacea over 30 years ago. I’ve been off rosacea meds for over 20 years. Through trial and error I figured out which skincare products I can use and which lifestyle changes to make. (FYI I’ve been using Paula’s Choice Skin Recovery Cleanser for years. Paula’s Choice also has a rosacea line which I haven’t tried. I believe you can order sample sizes of the products so you don’t waste a bunch of money.) My skin is beautiful. Don’t give up!

      Yes! I’m 26 and beginning to think I may have rosacea. I’m so very sensitive to any skincare and stay red for a while after application, stay blotchy after working out, and get red immediately when I have alcohol.

    I think I seem to have a combo of one and two, bit of redness on the cheeks with little pimples in the same area. I’ve ordered a few of your suggestions to try.
    If I were to get a handle on it either way, is there something you would suggest anti-aging wise?
    Thank you ☺️

    Thank you for presenting this topic. I have both vascular and ocular rosacea. I’m more concerned about the latter, as I’m very fond of being able to see. I don’t use perfumed products, and don’t drink alcohol, but I haven’t (yet) given up spicy food.

    You guys are amazing with breaking all the noise down to digestible info! 💖 If I take a coconut charcoal capsule with a drink, it significantly reduces the redness/rash/flush reaction. Definitely NOT an expert here, just a vain/stubborn women whose tried everything to still enjoy my happy hour and not look like I fell into poison ivy! (Side note* charcoal can also absorb any medications or supplements, so take within two hours of anything else.)
