Would love to hear from anyone out there that had a similar issue with their GoPro and how you ended up resolving it! Thanks again everyone, tight lines!
I had and have the same issue. The interesting part is that I dive, ride and fly with the same camera and have been for a couple years. I have a 6. I just recently ran into this issue so it’s not something I solved but I do have a good card V30. The batteries are something that could be a problem due to their age. One is OEM others are from eBay. What I wanted to add as anecdotal evidence is that it seems that the files I have issues with were recorded during very turbulent motion. I never had this issue diving for example. But have it when I fly and look around a lot. Maybe this has to do with image stabilizer process overwhelming the video buffer or the current draw is high during that time and the older batteries can’t keep up? I wonder if anyone has this issues without IS being on. (Update. The issue was the older battery. I got a new battery and can replicate the issue at will. When I record 2k at 60 frames and have remote control turned on through my phone, this hang will happen on the older battery. Never with a new one.)
Whatever MIC that was used here sounds so bad that it's painful! JC! Have all the same issues on this new to me camera, but also have freezing browsing clip list and playback.
Hey I want to update you on this thread as well. It was the aftermarket battery. I noticed that the problem was only happening when I used aftermarket battery. Even when I used old GoPro battery, it would still work. I got GoPro labeled battery and haven’t had any issues since. I suspect the aftermarket batteries just don’t supply enough power to run the camera processor and it crashes but doesn’t error out.
Dan, you're the man. For the first time I had the very same problem today, all the videos I've taken with the 8 never had this problem until today. Looks like it's an after market battery. Big thanks for your information. Big 👍up to ya
Awesome, I'm glad the video helped! I don't know what happened with the design of the GP but anything before the GP7 is fine with generic batteries but then everything 7 and above seems to be prone to this issue. Thanks for the comment and 👍👊
Dan! You are the man! Your video saved me from declaring my GoPro 8 dead! Thanks so much for going to all the work experimenting and researching, and also the work of making this fine Tube explaining it all so well. I'm a pilot, not an angler, so - "tailwinds!" to ya.
Thanks, Dan. I've got the Hero 7 and, now, the Hero 10...the 7 I use for b-roll and the 10 for the main event (in this case, riding my motorcycle). I was out yesterday and the 7 filmed for about 20 seconds & then just froze (audio continued the whole time, though). I also had a MIBOTE battery in it at the time. I've got 3 of them but I'll be disposing of them in a responsible manner and have ordered 2 additional batteries direct from GoPro for 41 euros (with my subscription).
THANK YOU!! I realized I was using an Ultra micro SD with my GoPro Hero 7 so will try an Extreme now (from your linked of list of recommended cards) - kicking it back down from 4k to 1080p in the meantime.
I had no idea this was an issue. I just bought a gopro 7 hero black at best buy yesterday and have no clue how to use it. I'm an old man who hates technology and I don't use my phone for anything except making phone calls. I bought this thing and of course it didn't come with the microSD so I went back out to target and bought the only 128 GB hanging on the pegs and it is in fact SanDisk Extreme PLUS so I think I'm all set to attempt some recording. I did not update my camera yet. Not sure how I want to go about doing it but I can't use the little adapter for it because I think I need an adapter for the adapter to go into the usb port. I'm going to try it out without updating it but thanks for this video. Maybe this old dog can learn something.
Hi Joesep, thank you so much for watching my video and taking the time to leave a comment! When it come to GoPros, you should always keep it updated as they are constantly fixing glitches, and I always recommend using the SD Card method to update, especially if you're having freezing issues with your GoPro! And you lucked out when you bought that card, it is the right one for that camera, and as you mentioned, devices never come with the card, you always have to buy that separately. Best of luck with your new camera and let me know if you have any more questions! :)
Even before i saw this video i noticed that ist freezes more frequently with my third-party batteries. Happy to see That someone else noticed this too. I ordered a new battery and Hope this will fix the Problem for me
I’ve been dealing with this freezing problem too. And as much as I like this video, it WILL NOT fix the freezing in All cases. I’ve changed the battery, bought and formatted the best scan disk sd card, updated the firmware both on the camera and on the computer, spent an hour + on the phone with GoPro support, and now 4 weeks and 150 bucks later, it still freezes.
Same thing on goproMax. Hyper fast sd card (120bucks), brand new original battery and fresh firmware update. Still freezing. I bought 2 Insta360, no issues and top quality
I just want the basic reliability of the old Hero3. Sadly what I have found is once we had new releases the problems with these cameras became worse. I have 6 GoPros, and the only ones I still totally trust in my 2 very old Hero 3's. Just sad how this company totally tanked, they had the whole action camera market but not anymore.
Heres a twist for you, My 7 black will freeze when you turn it on in the holder. but not if it is not in the holder, nothing has changed since last week . battery is the same , tried 2 different holders. same problem.
I just encountered this problem the other day. Never had any problems for a couple of years. Always used original batteries. Used the recommended SD cards, and always recorded in 1080/60 fps. I recently bumped to 120fps and the freezing happened. Hopefully changing back to 60fps will help.
@@DanRichardFishing thing is that’s the only thing I changed. Is the FPS. For a few years it has worked with no freezing. I’ll look up better SD cards before upgrading the GoPro itself. Thanks your tips. I’m tossing my older GoPro hero batteries as well. The all black ones
Even GoPro batteries will age. It’s like what apple was fighting with iPhones a few years ago. Battery would be at 40 percent but then some app starts loading the cpu and the phone shuts off. This is exactly the same issue. GoPros now have lots of post processing with video stabilization and they are susceptible to the aging battery current supply limits. Meanwhile there is no way to know how much battery has degraded. iPhones throttle themselves now to prevent shutdowns. GoPro needs to do something similar meanwhile I would replace any battery older than 2.5 years.
Well you are the first video I found that really addressed all of the possibilities. In my case it now looks like the batteries are my issue. I was using the cheaper battery and lost out on some fantastic footage. Very frustrating. Haven't done the real test yet but thanks for a great video!
Hi, Dan! Thanks a lot for your viedo, and your efforts to find out possible issues with GoPro freeze! I got GP Hero 8 which gave me some headache on those freeze issues. Now I can try to test it with your suggestions! Thanks again, Peace!
thanks Dan!!! i updated using the "manual" update. now going to try using just original battery while connected to the power bank...hope it wont freeze! thanks again!
Ahhh I am having the 7 black stop recording and over heating. I just ordered New generic battery to see if my brand batteries were old. Need to look at type of SD card. Just started happening after 2 years.
Thanks for the video. Any idea about what I can do to solve a problem I have with my GoPro hero eight? The solid red light on the front of the camera that won’t go away… The camera will not function at all. I’ve tried everything.
Hi there TFF! Unfortunately I believe that is what they refer to as the red light of death. I read someplace that you can plug it in to a charging cable and then hold down the mode button for 8 - 10 seconds to reset it. There is also this page that has some troubleshooting to try: community.gopro.com/s/article/GoPro-Camera-Will-Not-Power-On?language=en_US I did see a couple of people post your exact issue and the camera needed to be replaced. Let me know if any of these work and best of luck!
Yeah, no... I have the Hero 8 Black (upgraded from the Hero 5 Black, which also overheated and had write issues) and I ALWAYS use original GoPro batteries and ALWAYS use the Sandisk Extreme series micro-SD cards (also on my Hero 5 Black) and I STILL get these issues. The cam is fully patched (firmware) and I veeeery often format the memory card before a session... but it still overheats or produces these unusable clips with frozen frames. Hell, it even overheats and freezes the video when I mount the cam to my motorcycle helmet and go for a ride! And summers are not that hot here in Denmark.... I REALLY hope they have fixed this on the Hero 10 Black, because it's SUPER annoying.
I'm definitely hearing more and more from people saying their cams are simply overheating and locking up, that's pretty silly for a camera that is made to film outdoors. I've had my gopro7 out in blazing sun at 32C for 8 hours and it never locked up so something they did with the 8 really screwed it up.
Thanks for the video. In my case I have a GoPro Max and its the new GoPro original battery that’s causing this issue! If I put in the old GoPro battery the video recording works fine but if I put the new GoPro battery in, then it freezes up. Updating the firmware didn’t make a difference. Going to try returning the battery and getting it replaced.
Thanks for the feedback, you're definitely not the first person to mention that it's the OEM battery that was defective causing the issues Hope you're able to get it swapped out!
thanks so much for this video. i had the samen problem and it was driving me crazy. i used the gopro on track and hit a new PB 2 times. both were not recorded due to this issue :(
Thank you for your vid, well done. I have exactly the same problem with my cam and I am so angry because I lost a lot of footage with this issue. Will try your advice step by step, nothing more anoying in filming when you lose your trust in your camera
I have GoPro original battery and using SanDisk Extreme as recommended but my GoPro Hero 7 still freezes, especially when I use it near a pool. 🙈 What else could I possibly do now?
Have you also done a full update via the SD Card method? You may also want to do a factory reset and then update all over again via the SD Card. If it still freezes after that, you may want to try a different battery and SD Card to see if that helps. When you say near a pool, do you mean in the pool itself and the camera is getting wet?
@@DanRichardFishing i checked the update, it's at the latest version. Sure, i did factory reset last night, will try today now. Both inside and outside the pool, not very deep, just on the surface sorts. It takes only 15 second shots and then video freezes and only audio gets recorded.
I have a GoPro Hero 6 Black with the same freezing up issues. I've done everything EXCEPT try standard original GoPro batteries, I'm using aftermarket brand now. Thank You, I will order some & try it out.
@@DanRichardFishing I just ordered 3 batteries from the GoPro website, for my Hero 6 Black, only $11.00 per battery plus $10 shipping- was cheaper than Amazon. Thanks for the information!! I'll test it out.
Hey man. Thanks for this! I have the same issue and it was driving me NUTS!!! I ordered some official GoPro Batteries and hopefully that will do the trick for me. I have the correct card and everything is updated....so we shall see!
I have a 1 year old gopro 8 that first the screen starts glitching while recording then freezes and only records audio. I confirmed that it had the latest version but I followed the steps anway for updating. Im using the exact sd card you recommend in this video. I also put the original gopro battery back in the camera and tested it today and it still freezes. any other ideas?
Thanks a Million, this Problem drove me nuts while filming my sled runs with friends. I tried to fix it with the update and I only use the correct SDs. I definitely hope its the batteries, since I use the same models as you did.
Dan thanks for the very informative video. I was considering upgrading my 7 and 8 black because of the same freezing you experienced. I will try to update them and see if it works. I do use a yolotek powerstik so I am not sure if the battery would be an issue. This gives me a starting point.
Mine started freezing at 1 minute the same time I had the screen saver set too. I thought that was the problem or glitch so I up the screen saver time. (Same result) I am running a few aftermarket batteries in my cameras so I’ll switch them out and try it! Thanks for the info!
Let me know if switching to GoPro brand batteries fixes the issue! For me I had 1 GoPro brand that came with the camera and like 4 fake ones. When I started wondering about the batteries, that's when I realized it would never freeze when the GoPro brand was in there and the light bulb turned on in my head lol
@@DanRichardFishing I ordered 4 batteries after watching your video, so Hopefully they’ll be in week. Oh and it wouldn’t let me ship batteries by air, but switched to ground ship with no problems.
thank you..its the battery solved my problem for gopro hero 8...if the batteries level is 30%..its started freezing...the sd card is good, firmware is good..then i changed the battery..really works.thank you for the tips..👍👍👍
Combination of things: 256 GB Samsung Evo cards claim to be U3/10 but I can't capture more than 2k at 30 frames or it freezes. Also, was using the Telesin batteries... not sure if the batteries are an issue, or not, but they definitely don't have the same run time. Thanks for helping me figure this out!
I, too, lost a lot of footage on one camera, and the brand new match to my older 7 wouldn't work right outa the box (PWC in foul weather). Now that I think I have a handle on this problem I'm feeling a lot less angst.
I run a 256GB Evo on my Osmo at 4K 60FPS and it doesn't freeze at all, maybe it's just on the GP? Yeah I stopped with the off-brand batteries and it hasn't frozen on me since!
I will try the firmware update. Mine has been shutting off after a minute or two of filming. When I first used it with the SD card that GoPro sent with it, the video was also getting corrupted. I bought an extreme SD card, and the video is great now, it just still has the shutting off issue, which I can't figure out. Thanks for the video it was very helpful.
Absolutely do the update first, use the manual method to make sure it completely updates and resets. Please let me know if that works, hope you get it solved!!
I have a problem with temporary freezes when playing back GoPro Hero 9 4K footage on my PC. I have upgraded the camera firmware, am using a GoPro original batter and a GoPro-supplied Sandisk Extreme 64G (red and gold) micro SD card. If I load the 4K video into a video editor then play the video back at a lower resolution, it's fine. If I play it back at the original resolution, the freezing issue occurs. My PC is a X64 i5-6400 CPU 4-core with Z170X-Gaming 3 Gigabyte baseboard, 32Gb RAM, geforce gt730 graphics card running 64-bit Windows 10. I think the issue is that the graphics card cannot handle 4K videos.
Definitely sounds more like a hardware issue on the PC versus an issue with your GoPro. Have you tried playing the video in a couple of different video programs such as trying it once with VLC and then trying it again in the Windows Media player? I've actually had high resolution videos play better in Windows Media player than VLC.
Well you may have solved my problem. I use both GoPro and Wasabi Power but my GoPro 8 keeps freezing up. I bought a new Scandisk SD and GoPro even replaced my camera under warranty. It still freezes up. I’m tossing the knock off batteries so I’m hoping this fixes it for good.
I still use my GP7 as my chest cam and love it, zero issues with it once I figured out the third party batteries was what was locking it up. I also now have a DJI Osmo action on the back of the boat and I can say the GP7 has better low light quality.
Questions : 1. OSMO ACTION - is OA lag still exist even after the latest firmware update? Coz it’s annoying when u need to record a video n it catches up later on in the film... 2. GO PRO : in some GP9 review it still has freeze, glitches n bugs 3 times after a few hours owning it... coz it’s ridiculously frustrating when u need to record a footage but it froze n u miss a lot of good footage... wz d price.. is it a deal breaker?? 3. INSTA 360.. some review has a low quality audio.. n a choppy slow motion... is it worth buying wz a USD$700+ price tag?
Hi Asik! OK not going to lie, I don't know what OA lag is, (I even tried to google it) but do you mean the onscreen lag people have mentioned? I personally don't seem to have that issue, or at least I didn't notice it. It's been very easy to use and haven't had any issues with it. It is most definitely inferior in low light vs a GoPro. I don't know about the GoPro 9 but my GP 7 has been working fine since I stopped using the third party batteries. Based on that and the superior low light capabilities, I personally would buy it if I needed a new action camera. for the Insta360, I honestly have not tried it at all. I just felt the price is WAY too expensive for my needs so I haven't touched it. Thanks so much for your questions and checking out my content!
So I purchased a used gopo 7 black and started thinking it was defective because it would pixelate and freeze on play back. (Settings 1080 / 60 / L & latest firmware was 01.90) After watching your video purchased a Scandisk Extreme - didn't make any difference. For some reason when setting changed to 1080 / 30 / L it was better but resolution was grainy. When mp4 file was played from sd card on usb port (Windows 10/ i7 - early version - windows player) through usb it would do the same thing. So ran it through the Corel video studio and rendered it to XAVC S MP4 HD 1920 x 1080, 60p, 20Mbps and it would do the same thing. Decided to render same file to MPEG-4 AVC 1920 x 1080, 30p, 15Mbps and it was perfect with no issues. What is really going on here? It appears older pc's have issues with the GoPro files?? Your thoughts? Will work on other fixes otherwise I am limited to 1080HD.
Hi Dan, I liked your video for the Gopro 7 ....I only used it once and it overheats. Do you know why it gets so hot that it turns off ? I got mine about a year an half and its very hard to use it.....would it be a settings issue? any insight would be helpful thank you for a great youtube video
Hi Brandi, thank you for the question and I'm sorry to hear you're having issues with your GP7. There was definitely some software updates to help with overheating so make sure your unit has all the latest updates and make sure your screen auto shuts off fairly quickly and isn't set to always on or something like that. Give it a shot and let me know if that helps!
Hi Dan, I am from India. Faced exactly the same issue. I was pissed off because my GoPro was just 1 year old, Tried everything but failed. I did not face any issues when recorded with USB charging, it worked super smooth. The issue is probably with my batteries now. Unfortunately, I am using 2 brand Gopro batteries but they are 1 year old. Wondering how both batteries are causing me the same problem at the same time. Need to know the reason now before buying new batteries. Anyways thanks so much for the video.
I just think the GoPros are super sensitive to voltage fluctuations and perhaps cheaper batteries are not as stable as their higher quality ones. Honestly that's a guess but I suspect that is the issue.
After my app update, my GoPro was still freezing with the official batteries.. The problem would be the sleep/auto power off function, when it turned the screen off after 5 minutes of inactivity it would not turn back on (or wake up) until I reset the internal battery placement (which is a hassle when it's in its case clamp). Do you use yours without the "auto power off" function?
Actually, as an update, I find that my GoPro does not freeze if there is no memory card in the slot. I can turn it on and off repeatedly without it freezing as long as there is no memory card. Then, I formatted the problem memory card and found it could turn on and off with no problem. It made me wonder whether videos stored on the memory card at different resolutions were a problem, or whether it was a memory card incompatibility problem (But GoPros website recommends my current 128GB SanDisk extreme pro card). It’s all a bit of a mystery at the moment.
That is really strange but definitely it seems like these newer generations of GoPros are very sensitive to SD cards, so does it seem to be working 100% now?
This is a tough one because a TON of people complain that they have issues with GoPros in freezing temperatures locking up or horrible battery life in and around the 20f area, although they are supposed to be good in something like up to -15F or something. One of the issues is that these newer GoPros no longer have cases, which actually helped contain some of the heat in the unit and keep the batteries a bit warmer. Some of the recommendations I've seen are to get a waterproof case and use that in the winter and some have bought those handwarmers that are in small packets that heat up when exposed to the air and use a rubber band to hold them against the back of the gopro to keep it warm. Have you tried a second GoPro brand battery to see if it still freezes? Hope that helps!
Also the issue on gopro is the battery. I had 3 gopro batteries gone i charge it and then i couldn't use it for 3 days and when I used it, power on the Screen, is black and white hanging my firmware is updated always, start thinking buy battery again and again
Have you had any experience using a Yolotek power pole? I am having the same issues using it with constant power applied. Also these cameras get hot and shut down alot.
Hi Mark, YES!!! I use a Yolotek Powerstick on the back of my boat so all my fishing videos where you can see the angle from the back of the boat, that's on my powerstick :) BUT I don't use a GoPro on there, I use a DJI Osmo Action right now. BUt with that said, I do run my GP7 on my chest cam for hours at a time and while it does get really hot, it doesn't turn off. I've hear someone suggest get a white case for your GoPro and it will help keep it cooler... which makes sense... a black gopro in the sun would get way warmer than a white case. Give that a shot and that might help. Good luck!
GP9 was freezing. went home and did (another) firmware update via mobile app. Next use/trip, it froze again (last video only, after about an hour of recording, with battery and room on SD card to spare. I only ever used SanDisk 128 Extreme. What am I doing wrong?
Hello Dan, I have a brand new go pro 11, it worked fine in the beginning but for some reason, the video footage has this "stop/continue" thing, so it freezes for a 1/10 of a second and then continues, and this happens 2/3 times a second. its all brand new, the sd card is a 256 gb samsumg evo ( so not the best, but it should be good enough), do you have any idea?
If the unit is brand new, I would just call up GoPro support and see what they say, I'm honestly not sure what it is you're seeing. You can the sequential recording enabled right?
I have Hero7 Black v1.90 firmware and it freezes often. GoPro has not improved the software since Nov. 25, 2019. Some people have suggested SanDisk Extreme Pro microSD 256GB memory card might have an issue. I reformatted the memory card but issues continue.
If you did all that and you're using OEM batteries,I'd call them and get a replacement. Last ditch thing would be make sure you upgraded manually (using the sdcard method) and then do a factory reset. If it still does it, you should get it replaced.
@@DanRichardFishing yeah, that's my next step. In my case it only freezes when mounted on a motorcycle, probably because of vibration. I'll give it one more test after manual update and if it doesn't work will send it back. It's actually the camera they sent me as a replacement for my first one with broken screen, so I'm really disappointed
Dan thanks so much for the video brother. I have SO many issues with my GoPro Hero8 Black so I feel your pain! I have two and they overheat, freeze up, shutdown . . . etc all the time. I'm going try a different micro SD card as you suggested, however the ones I'm using should be fine (SanDisk Extreme PRO SDXC UHS-I U3 A2 256GB). I have about 9 batteries I use also and they are all GoPro brand. Thanks again Dan.
I'm hearing a LOT of people mentioning overheating on their GP8s, is this just in general or only when you're outside in the sun and warm weather? I was thinking of getting an 8 or a 9 but now I'm worried!
So funny that I ended up here for this reason...as I'm a fisherman too and so pissed of losing so great action of pike attacks etc....btw... I updated the sw / firmware....using the fastest sd card but still is freezing !! It may be also due to the very cold situation while using it ?? Thanks man....you rule... subscribed 😉
Hey thanks for subscribing, and yeah I really get your frustration! If you've updated your firmware via the SD Card method and you are using a SanDisk Extreme or a Samsung U3 and it's still freezing, I would suggest trying a new GoPro brand battery. Let me know how that turns out and thanks for the sub!
@@DanRichardFishing i tried to update the sw by phone app....then formatting the SD by computer as initializing the SD again....and seems to work...but...i believe this also is related to the cold situation once outdoor.... 😓
Thanks a lot it really helped. Updated the software, got additional original batteries and SDXC card instead of the SDHC I had :), all good now!, in my particular case it was always freezing when files reaching 3.9Gb or with low battery when skiing.
So helpfull information, but I have another problem when I try to see the media inside the gopro thru the camera it self, when I swipe up, it's suddenly blank for a sec, and then it going back to the camera standby. So pain.
@@DanRichardFishing I did, just doing a factory reset, and like you said it's because of the ultra sd card now I didn't use 4K for a while, until I buy the xtreme one, lol. For now the problem is solved, as long I recorded not using 4K. Once again, your information is really help me to get this things fixed! Thanks man!
I wonder if its the amperage in the remaining battery that causes the gopro to lock up. Hmmm tempted to get a GP7 as they have been on sale recently ...
I'm honestly not sure but I can confirm that ever since I switched to only GoPro brand batteries and since I made this video, my 7 has never locked up again. I'm just happy I'm no longer losing my footage!! I'd say go for it, I want to get another one to replace my old 3 on the back of the boat.
happened to me too with my hero7, but it seemed most often happening while skiing. But the thing is, it doesn't happen always, its like 1 out of 20 videos, independent of the settings. I filmed on a ski slope once, all ok, then later I did the ski slope again and also wanted to film again because weather cleared up, but then the camera froze. So can't be the card. Very annoying when you start filming on the top, arriving in the valley you check the camera and see it froze... the video freezes after 20s. Even though the battery was like 50%. Its incredebly how weak these batteries are, especially if you're in cold weather. I was using cheaper ones I bought online
Do bear in mind the cameras will lock up in cold weather and yeah, the battery life is severely cut in cold weather. That's why I laugh when I see the promo videos of people skiiing with the gopros. If it's really cold, the camera will lock up. I think anything past -20c is risky.
Bear in mind that using stabilizing and light changes combining on top of each other will overload your processors and cards. Your gear needs to all be top notch to match the commands coming from the cpu. Also PRO TIP, when skiing what are you doing with your go pro on rides up the chairlift and your spare battery? For cold weather sports like skiing and ice fishing and snowmobiling it is recommended to keep a spare battery in your pocket and when your riding up the chairlift take the battery out and put it in a warm inside pocket under layers where it can warm up and stay dry. Try holding the battery against your skin after a run down the mountain and compare it to a battery you keep stored safely. It will be ice cold and you need to change batteries or at least let the battery have a break like a chair ride or possibly an entire run down mountain if you only have 1 battery.
Excellent video my friend. I'm from Brazil and I also have a kayak fishing channel. My GoPro H7 has the same problem as yours. I am thinking of using a powerbank. Very good video
Thank you so much for the comments! I use a powerbank or brand name batteries and haven't had any issues. My only problems were when I used the generic batteries. All the best!
Thank you mate , I will try with new Gopro battery, because I had 2 battery one Gopro and one like from ali express, as soon I drowned the original battery I started to use ali express one's then my videos start freezing... Thank u let see
My hero7 black also have some issues... It shows up repairing device after a while I start recording... And then battery percentage goes down from 60 - 80% to 4 - 9%... I also have freezing problems same as with your footage... I use the original battery which i got along the gopro and sandisk extreme version sd card as recommended... Very disappointing with this thing... Anyways I am gonna try out the update trick... Do you think that might work?
Definitely you need to do the update via the SD Card method but if I were you, I would try a new battery even if your original one is a GoPro brand. Good luck and let me know if you fix it!
@@DanRichardFishing updated it to the lastest version but that didn't work... Anyway I would try out on a new battery... Hi Dan, I bought a new GoPro 8 Black, when I connected it to my Phone app it asked me to update go pro software. I proceeded with the process to update my software, but it stalled at 10% then I tried again later that evening and this time it updated up to 50% and then would not update any further Since the 50% update, my GoPro does not work None of the functions are working, also nothing is displaying on the display screen. No menu or view, it is blank In-short my GoPro is not working. I have tried all the processes available short. cuts online such as hard reset, and reset, etc. nothing seems, to work... kindly help me if you have some fixes for it

Hey I just got back from going to the pool with my gopro hero 7, and I noticed the wrench icon as well. So I don't know if I have to get a new battery or what, I'm just stuck right now.
Ok so after three weeks of using the new batteries from gopro my gopro black 7 seems to be filming again with out freezing the video. I've made three videos but all were under 15 minutes so far its been good. But soon I will be going on vacation where I will be filming all day for several days so I'll see if it holds up to hours plus video recording. Tight lines......
I've got freezing problem. I have that exact same gold sd card. mIne still freezes and I also have extreme shake when walking which no one has been able to tell me why
Hero 7 black, Firmware 1.90, two original gopro batteries with good health, formatted, new and gopro list compatible sandisk extreme sd-card (checked multiple ones, all the same issues), but nevertheless anything below 5 °C causes recording crashes and card errors. At first I experienced this only below -10 °C, but now it got worse.
Unfortunately this is not what happened in my case... if the camera froze for the next hour then it would record an hour's worth of Frozen video until the battery died. Even if I tried to stop the video and just let it sit there it wouldn't do anything until the battery died or I pulled the battery. Very frustrating!
This is totally normal, this is to ensure if something goes wrong with a video, it doesn't ruin everything and to make the files sizes manageable. But no worries, the videos can be joined in any video editing and it's seamless where it gets cut so you don't see any kind of pause or whatever in between. Hope that helps!
I have the recommended SD card using GoPro batteries and even reinstalled the firmware and are having the same issues. Even did a full factory reset and reformatted the SD card on the computer. Same Issues. Looks like i will be buying the DJI Osmo Action 3 that just came out. I have the original DJI OSMO Action and have zero issues with it.
That's wild how the battery was causing your GoPro to glitch like that... you would think it would either work or not work at all if the battery was acting up
@@DanRichardFishing I wonder if the GoPro Hero8's firmware was programmed purposely to lock up the device once a generic branded battery hit around 25% mark. It would be a good idea to run an average/run test on both batteries to see if the problem is that the generic battery comes with less amp than what advertised or if its GoPro screwing up the user by placing unsuspecting "booby traps" when they use generic batteries in order to force them to use the more expensive official batteries.
@@yafilmDOTcom I’m having the same issues on ski trip atm, using a generic battery. I’m gonna try this fix tomorrow. Will post an update on my findings.
After I had updated the gopro 7 via SD card many and many times but it still goes frozen..i m getting mad about this please help..tell me a solution i cant able to take atleast one video with my hero 7
I have two batteries i changed it both when it shows freezing issue ...if the battery gets charged full, but after freezing the cam then the camera shows battery only have 3 %. Left ...it make me mad..please tell me a solution
Hi there and sorry to hear you're having so many issues with hour camera! Are both batteries real GoPro branded batteries that you are using? What you're describing sounds like battery issues but it seems weird that both would do it if they are OEM batteries. What SD card are you using?
I think the battery is my issue as well. I'm testing it right now. I'm using artman batteries and it's been driving me up the wall that this thing has been crashing.
@@DanRichardFishing I ran my gopro battery that was shipped with the gopro from 100% to 0% while recording and sitting on my desk and that was succssful. Strange thing is...I have also done this with the artman batteries too while simply sitting them on my desk and running and there was also no issue with it. It only seems to occur while moving/recording/doing something. I ordered 3 more OEM gopro batteries as i have a trip coming up soon. Will do more testing while riding my motorcycle in a week or so, hopefully with the OEM batteries I ordered.
Following up, I've been using my go pro for the past week with only the go pro battery. No issues at all. Thank you for posting this. th-cam.com/video/ye6HZrCX-FU/w-d-xo.html
Good information In this video. My GoPro freezes all the time. And it does it more now that it is cold out. I use the GoPro so that is most likely not the issue. But I think for me it might be the memory card. I’ll have to check after work.
i watched your video, did everything and still i kept getting the same problem. BUT here is how i fix it, i was recording on 1080p 120FPS so i changed the settings to 1080 60FPS and the problem was gone. so i think the problem was the microSD card. i bought a microsd card without looking which is the supported on the GOpro. ( Sandisk 128gb (3) A2 image mate pro 170mb's read ) strange because it says i can record at 4k lol. maybe its not supported. any how i hope this helps to anyone that is having issues.
Hey man, nice video. I have an other issue with the hero 7 black. When I try to put my footage on my pc, the gopro will not send all the files to the pc. If I, for example, have 9 videos on my gopro, it will send 7 to my pc. Only the fourth and the eight video file/ footage will not sznd to my pc. This happend a few times. Now the last time it happens, my sd card has some GB less because the data seems to be on the memory card (probably vid 4 and 8) but the files are gone. What do you think this ?
Hi Robrecht, I'm afraid I only use the SD Card directly for file transfers because the wireless is so slow. I'm not sure at all what could be doing that, sorry I can't help :(
Would love to hear from anyone out there that had a similar issue with their GoPro and how you ended up resolving it!
I'm trying to use mine for live streaming, and it immediately freezes when I hook up the HDMI.
My hero 8 freezes been trying going to try batteries now
Dan, you're the man.
Thanks for the comment and 👍👊
@@DanRichardFishing actually gopro 6 has sam freeze problem... and cant belive that old gopro 3 black is top-notch,,, :(
My HERO8 locked up for the first time while flying yesterday...The wrinkle is I too was using brand new off-brand batteries. This is great info.
Yep, stick to OEM for awhile and see if it still freezes. So far mine never froze again!
Want a gopro for my birthday and almost said forget it because of the reviews about it freezing up...this was a HUGE help thank you! 🙏
I would still buy one, mine has been fine since the battery change :)
Let me know if going with the OEM batteries solved it! Thanks so much for letting me know and I hope it works!
THANK YOU!! I realized I was using an Ultra micro SD with my GoPro Hero 7 so will try an Extreme now (from your linked of list of recommended cards) - kicking it back down from 4k to 1080p in the meantime.
Yep the Ultra is just too slow. I hope you got your Ultra and it's working great now :)
I found that even with the GoPro battery, it freezes once it gets below 30% battery.
I would recommend you try a new GoPro brand battery to see if it makes a difference if you've already upgraded the firmware :)
I ordered a new battery and Hope this will fix the Problem for me
Yep, it took some time but eventually I figured it out lol! Let me know if the new GP battery works for you!
I found that the off brand batteries are the culprit too. Sourcing genuine GoPro batteries for older units is a challenge though.
Excellent it helped me a lot greetings from Chile
Awesome I'm glad it was helpful and thank you for subscribing to my channel!
Wow that is crazy! Which model do you have? And when you updated the firmware, did you do it via the app or the SDCard?
That is REALLY weird. Not sure wtf, might want to contact GoPro with that one!
I just encountered this problem the other day. Never had any problems for a couple of years. Always used original batteries. Used the recommended SD cards, and always recorded in 1080/60 fps. I recently bumped to 120fps and the freezing happened. Hopefully changing back to 60fps will help.
If bumping up the FPS freezes it, I would suspect something with the SD Card you're using...
Found your channel via GoPro trouble, stayed for the fishing!
Mah man! 👊
No worries Arnold, did it work?? :)
Ahhh I am having the 7 black stop recording and over heating. I just ordered New generic battery to see if my brand batteries were old. Need to look at type of SD card. Just started happening after 2 years.
Good luck to you, I hope you're able to get it fixed! A solution I see people doing for heat is using white cases.
There is also this page that has some troubleshooting to try: community.gopro.com/s/article/GoPro-Camera-Will-Not-Power-On?language=en_US
I did see a couple of people post your exact issue and the camera needed to be replaced. Let me know if any of these work and best of luck!

hey Richard i want to ask u i have a problem with my gopro hero 7 white , it's working but the LCD touch not working what's the issues ?
Have you tried doing a manual update of the camera software? I'd do that first thing.
Dan Richard Fishing yeh i did it but it won’t active
Thanks for the info! My gopro hero 7 black is working great again!
Awesome, glad the video was helpful!!
Thankyou hope this will improve the issues of this device

Thank you for your vid, well done. I have exactly the same problem with my cam and I am so angry because I lost a lot of footage with this issue. Will try your advice step by step, nothing more anoying in filming when you lose your trust in your camera
I feel your pain! Even now I still stop and restart recording a LOT just in case. Good luck, let me know if it works!!
My case, freezes on beach. If check video, bling like flash then freeze.
I have a GoPro Hero 6 Black with the same freezing up issues. I've done everything EXCEPT try standard original GoPro batteries, I'm using aftermarket brand now. Thank You, I will order some & try it out.

Dan thanks for the very informative video. I was considering upgrading my 7 and 8 black because of the same freezing you experienced. I will try to update them and see if it works. I do use a yolotek powerstik so I am not sure if the battery would be an issue. This gives me a starting point.
Thanks, Brand new gopro but using old Micro SD card. New card all good. Well done 🙂👍

When I started wondering about the batteries, that's when I realized it would never freeze when the GoPro brand was in there and the light bulb turned on in my head lol

thank you..its the battery solved my problem for gopro hero 8...if the batteries level is 30%..its started freezing...the sd card is good, firmware is good..then i changed the battery..really works.thank you for the tips..👍👍👍
Yeah first time I lost footage I was so pissed off... took me months to finally figure it out.
Good video. I am also considering buying gopro 7 for fishing. Do you still using 7 ? How are you satisfied ?
I still use my GP7 as my chest cam and love it, zero issues with it once I figured out the third party batteries was what was locking it up. I also now have a DJI Osmo action on the back of the boat and I can say the GP7 has better low light quality.
Questions :
My Hero8 stopped recording with no battery as I have it plugged in externally and a SanDisk SD card.
Does it start working again as soon as you put in a battery?
Awesome 👌 thank you was a great help

@@DanRichardFishing thank you, I will try that! =D
Yeah, thanks so much 😊
After my app update, my GoPro was still freezing with the official batteries..
VERY helpful information. It works!!!
Awesome, glad it helped!!
my hero 8 has v 2.5 the latest firmware and was freezing when i went snowboarding in 22F weather. is that normal?
I honestly believe that a TON of people have an issue with the battery and don't even realize it. The GP is incredibly sensitive to the power source.
Good luck!
@@DanRichardFishing thank you for the reply!
If you have constant power you can take the battery out and plug it in and the will help with overheating
GP9 was freezing. went home and did (another) firmware update via mobile app. Next use/trip, it froze again (last video only, after about an hour of recording, with battery and room on SD card to spare. I only ever used SanDisk 128 Extreme.
What am I doing wrong?
Do the firmware upgrade via the SD Card method and if you're still constantly locking up, try a new gopro brand battery and see.
@@DanRichardFishing Hi, thanks for your answer, sequential recording? is that looping?
I have Hero7 Black v1.90 firmware and it freezes often. GoPro has not improved the software since Nov. 25, 2019. Some people have suggested SanDisk Extreme Pro microSD 256GB memory card might have an issue. I reformatted the memory card but issues continue.
Same issue with my hero 8 black. Updated firmware, did factory reset and used multiple different SD cards, but the issue is still there.
@@true_cnstntn Did you ever find a solution?
@@ghost.97 nope, had to send it back to them. The replacement works fine
@@DanRichardFishing I’m mostly using mine outside.
@@NomadByFate how cold are we talking? I've used my GoPro in minus 20° c weather and it was okay just the battery doesn't last as long.
@@DanRichardFishing external temp was 2 celsius degrees and water temp 3° 😟
Thanks alot mate, for me it was the battery issue, problem solved!
Awesome glad to help!!
So pain.
Oh by the way, I'm using gopro hero8
That's really strange, did you run through a full reset and firmware update?
@@DanRichardFishing I did, just doing a factory reset, and like you said it's because of the ultra sd card now I didn't use 4K for a while, until I buy the xtreme one, lol. For now the problem is solved, as long I recorded not using 4K. Once again, your information is really help me to get this things fixed! Thanks man!
Wow awesome info, Thanks a lot
Glad it was helpful, thanks!
@@DanRichardFishing thanks for the reply. I picked up a Hero 7 Black last week, Look forward to using it.
I just got one of the 7 black cameras, brand new. I'll have to check for firmware. I've had it stop recording.
Definitely start with updating the software!
nice video, went here because my video freezed today :( i was using Telesin batteries. tahnks!
Glad it helped! Yep, it's a shame but those dang aftermarket batteries are a killer :/ Thanks so much for the comment!
happened to me too with my hero7, but it seemed most often happening while skiing.
@@johnlewitsky9915 yea but that doesn't solve the freezing problem
Exactly what is happing to me! Seems to be an issue when cold rather than warm i.e. the beach.
Thank u let see
@@TSWildlifee awesome I'm glad the video was helpful, I guarantee you that's what the problem is!
The camera does not freeze on the original gopro battery? I understood?
In my case, the GoPro was freezing when I used generic brand batteries. As soon as I switched to a GoPro brand battery, no more locking up at all.
Hi Dan,
I bought a new GoPro 8 Black, when I connected it to my Phone app it asked me to update go pro software.
I have tried all the processes available short. cuts online such as hard reset, and reset, etc. nothing seems, to work... kindly help me if you have some fixes for it
Have you tried updating via the sd card method?
@@DanRichardFishing Yes, in this case my GoPro 8 display screen and power red light start blinking but not showing anything on display screen or front status screen.. 🥺😢
Every year i look into gopros as a Christmas present and every year its the same thing. I want to buy one but im deterred every year lol.
I can confirm my DJI Osmo action has been great so far, but awful in low light.
As a GoPro 8 owner I feel your frustration man
Thankfully it all went away as soon as I switched to the right batteries.
Hey I just got back from going to the pool with my gopro hero 7, and I noticed the wrench icon as well. And the screen started glitching, I tried all sorts of stuff like removing the battery and SD card, while charging it. Well the little screen on the left turned back on, but my screen won't turn on.
EXCELLENT!! That sounds promising!
That helped a lot. Thank You
You're very welcome sir :)
I've got freezing problem. I have that exact same gold sd card. mIne still freezes and I also have extreme shake when walking which no one has been able to tell me why
Have you done the full factory reset and then run all the updates? And silly question but do you have the stability enabled?
@@DanRichardFishing I have tried all that. Will try again. Hyper smooth is enabled
Hmmm pretty sure they're supposed to be good until -20c, I've used them in -15 on the ice. Did you try calling GoPro to get their feedback?
When it is freezing...wait for 10 minutes!!! Dont take off the battery. It will save the footage you filmed...
Unfortunately this is not what happened in my case... if the camera froze for the next hour then it would record an hour's worth of Frozen video until the battery died. Even if I tried to stop the video and just let it sit there it wouldn't do anything until the battery died or I pulled the battery. Very frustrating!
I've done this too and it would worked, but then the timing started to get longer and longer to the point I had to reset by pulling the battery.
Hi Dan,my GoPro 7 black keeps on recording only at 8.52,stops,8.52 & so on,can this be fixed?
Thanks
That's wild how the battery was causing your GoPro to glitch like that... you would think it would either work or not work at all if the battery was acting up
EXACTLY! This is exactly what I thought, I was blown away when I realized it was the battery... talk about picky!
I'm 100% certain it's the batteries let me know how your testing goes!

Good information In this video. My GoPro freezes all the time. And it does it more now that it is cold out. I use the GoPro so that is most likely not the issue. But I think for me it might be the memory card. I’ll have to check after work.
I hope it helped, let me know if you're able to get it to work!
i watched your video, did everything and still i kept getting the same problem.
Yep I would have said try another SD Card, glad you got it fixed!!
