    Thanks for your video. We fish for steelhead and salmon under a bobber here in the rivers in north west Oregon on the coast. Looping mode is going to be a big plus as we can now capture the bobber going down then hooking and landing the fish without wasting a ton of sd card memory. Plan on using this feature for our TH-cam channel Fontana Outdoors.

    I totally misunderstood the concept. I did a trial run walking my dog after seeing this with it set up to loop at 20 minutes. When I got back I had 2) 5 minutes clips plus a partial? Still don't undertsand why that's happening.
    My goal is to record 9) 20 minute segments of a 3 hr MC ride. I'm now guessing I don't want to loop the video. Great feature to know about and I appreciate your explanation!

    My preference would be to have a 1 or 2 minute option. On a motorcycle trip, the events that you want to review later (scenic view, big truck going by, wobble on the gravel road, …) happen quite quickly so having a 5 minute window can be a bit much. Especially when you have to review later.
    The shorter option would help you find the event you wanted. I tend to try an mentally count the next five minutes to hit the button so the event is always at the beginning and of course I have more data on the card then I actually want.
    However, I do run a big card but I might be using the card over one week so I could run out of space, but I should calculate that.

    Good explanation for those that do not understand looping.
    I do run my hero 8 on a 20min loop. Just makes it easy for me when I edit.
    Only one of my cameras is a Gopro. The other 3 are Victure cameras. Cheap but work well and the looping saves different. If it's set on 5min it saves in 5min and not one min intervals.
    So depending on the cam used features can change with brands.
    Nice to see you use the same software I do. It's easy to learn.
    Love your teaching videos.
    I have a Fishhawk 1750 and try to set cams up in the same fashion as yours.
    Question though. Have you used the Dakota Lithium battery's for your cams so you do not have to run off your boat power?
    A power use video would be cool. I do not use the camera batteries at all other than my chesty.

    This is the most detailed video about looping ever made.

    What a well presented explanation of the use of the looping feature! Thank you very much! I'm considering buying a GoPro to film my fishing and will remember this. Seems like the way to go. Another option is using "hindsight" to capture 15 or 30 seconds prior to hitting recording. Have you considered using that? Pros and cons of that feature? Thanks a lot!

    • @AnglingAnarchy
      @AnglingAnarchy  9 หลายเดือนก่อน +1

      @marathonkev I'm glad the video was helpful! I don't think I would ever consider the hindsight feature, at least for musky fishing, because you would miss way too much. By the time the fish strikes, you fight it, net it, and compose yourself, there just wouldn't be enough time.

    • @marathonkev
      @marathonkev 9 หลายเดือนก่อน

      @@AnglingAnarchy I've thought of that as well...when you get that first strike for any fish....would be hard to reach up to start the camera.....I'd want to be in the moment with making sure to enjoy the action of fighting the fish.

    Great video Brian! I have been looking at gopros to get my first one soon. This is the most informative video I have seen on recording.
    Each time you stop it saves, then do you just hit reord again right away so it starts again? Also if you have on 20 min loop is it the same concept/process?
    Keep up the great work.

    I'm so confused, I just got a 9 for bass fishing. Used it for the first time today on a chesty and used 5 min looping. I'm only getting one minute chunks and none of them sync up to make the complete 5 mins, I just started my camera in looping at the beginning of this video and once it got to about 7 minutes recording in looping mode on my hero 9 I clicked stop recording, but only have a one minute video in my GoPro's gallery. Any insight??

    • @AnglingAnarchy
      @AnglingAnarchy  5 หลายเดือนก่อน

      @swimjigjake3567 that's odd that you would have all those 1 min pieces of vid but they don't sync up. Unless they're in a folder with other pieces of video and the clip numbers assigned by the GoPro have it so they're not in numerical order, if that makes sense. I feel like I'd have to actually sit down with the cam and have a look at what it's recording on the card

    • @AnglingAnarchy
      @AnglingAnarchy  ปีที่แล้ว

      Christopher Eric I don't for the following reason. It's very rare that on any given catch I need to stop all of the cameras in the boat. Most of the time it's only 3 of the 5 that are running and if I stopped all of them, I would just be wasting SD card space on the cameras that didn't capture anything useful

    Thank you so much for your time and explanation on this. There is still a part which confuses me a tad. I think I know the answer, but it would be good to hear your input. I wish your example had continued for at least 10-12 more minutes. My camera is on 5 Min looping. I came home from a day of fishing. I tried to be diligent about stopping the video after every catch. When I got home, I found 108 files. I lost an absolute ton of footage and have no idea where it went, since I tried to always stop the filming after the catch. Once you stop videoing, you are saying it saves 5 clips and then a bit of the clip it was recording when you pressed Stop. Now, let's say you instantly start recording again and 60 minutes go by before you catch another fish. Once you land it, you stop recording. Then you go home. What would you expect to be on the card? Fish 1: The original 5 full 1 minute videos, the partial 6th video, then Fish 2: 5 full 1 minute videos and another partial video? Total of 10, 1 minute videos, and 2 videos of less than one minute? Another way to ask the same question, once you stop recording, does it permanently mark the previous 5 minutes and the one partial video as not overwriteable? I sure do appreciate the video and your help!

    • @AnglingAnarchy
      @AnglingAnarchy  ปีที่แล้ว +1

      Paul's Outdoor Academy I'm glad thus was a bit of help to you. So when you came home from the trip where you ended up with 108 files, the math says that you started filming 18 separate occasions (6x18=108). It's odd that you were missing footage though. To answer your question if you catch a fish and stop the camera, you will have 5 full clips and a partial. Then film for 60 min and catch another fish and stop it, another 5 full clips and a partial for a total of 12 clips, Ten 1 min clips and 2 partials.

      @712Lifepersonal I've never come across that, unfortunately. If it was set to the 5 min loop, evertine you start and stop after more than 5 mins of filming, you should be left with 6 video files, 5 full 1 min clips and one that will be somewhere between 1 and 59 secs long. There will be other files as well that will end with .LRV and .THM, but I never save them.

I figure if I am going to film I would want at least 2 or 3 cameras but I can’t currently afford the brand new ones. Do the hero 5’s have the looping feature? Isaiah Bettinger Great Question! The looping feature first became available in the Hero 3 models and pretty much anything after that has it, with the exception of some of the white and silver versions, which they've pretty much done away with as far as I know. I really like the Hero 7 Black and they are usually pretty easy to find refurbished on Amazon in the $220-$240 range. The editing software I use is Cyberlink Powerdirector. For around $140 it's really powerful software and just a notch under what would be considered "professional" grade software. Hope that helps! Feel free to ask any other questions you may have.

    What's the use of looping when it's just gonna delete the other video if it's over the time loop

    • @AnglingAnarchy
      @AnglingAnarchy  ปีที่แล้ว +1

      @marieldugenia7336 For what I do, looping is almost essential. I fish for hours on end and need to capture the moment a fish finally strikes. So what looping allows me to do is to continually film so that I can capture that moment, without filling up my cameras SD card. Whether that happens in the first few minutes, or 6 hours into the day, all the camera ever saves is what has happened the last 5 minutes because that's all the footage I'm concerned with. Hope that makes sense.

    @winchestermodel7044 ปีที่แล้ว

    Why not just use hindsight mode which when you hit the record button it goes back 15 or 30 seconds and the recording lasts until you stop recording? For example, a fish bites and you hit record. The saved file will go back 30 seconds and it saves the file, from the 30 seconds prior to hitting the record button until you stop.

    • @AnglingAnarchy
      @AnglingAnarchy  ปีที่แล้ว +1

      @winchestermodel7044 The hindsight mode isnt available until the Hero 9 model, and I've got all Hero 7's for the most part. Even if I did have that function, I would definitely still loop. If it only goes back 30 seconds, there's a lot of action that would be missed by the time someone in the boat had time to hit record. The way muskies act boatside, the Hindsight function just wouldn't be a good fit. I'm sure it's great for other things, but musky fishing is definitely not one of them.

    nice details on looping... though the clowns at GoPro in my opinion, could care less or are forgetting about a huge segment of customers... this is us fisherman because with the new and much more expense GoPro 10 they have created serious issues with being able to run the camera(s) at even 2.7k @ 30 or 60 fps for any length of time... I don't know how the heck you'd run any length of time with 4K or the newer 5k+ stuff... I'm also a muskie hunter in the fall periods (mostly lmb smb during season... though I'm not the guy going Mach II with my hair on fire up and down the lake).If you've hooked a four footer it take more than few minutes to land them... so we need longer runs times. I like you also like to run the cameras all day long on power packs or plugged into usb ports around the boat, or yolotek devices... the GoPro 10... which means this is their tenth crack at creating/improving a camera! They've taken 5 steps backwards... in my opinion they the 10s have serious overheating issues which again in my opinion started manifesting itself in the 7 series of cameras which I own two of those and struggle to shoot 2.7k @30 for any length of time... We're not sky divers who flight time might be a couple minutes and when they hit the ground they can rave that the GoPro is the greatest thing since sliced cheese... we're fishing... at least we're trying to and our run times are much much longer... sorry for the rant but it just burns me... their attitude at GoPro these days, turn this off, turn that off, lower this setting lower that setting... what's the point of the camera then? You're details on lopping are very good. thank you kindly... jk

Now, let's just be honest about it ... we all know the GoPro media mod is a worthless add-on simply because those microphones are terrible. So, as a serious videographer, I need to use my own external microphone.
    My question is this: Can I use a USB-C splitter on the Hero 11 so I can simultaneously connect the Volta (for longer shooting times) and an external microphone like the Rode Wireless Go2 or the DJI Mic? Will it work? If yes, what USB-C splitter do you recommend?

      Izak Niemann Well unfortunately I won't be a ton of help either as I've never tried to do that, but looking at what is required, (a usb-c splitter and then perhaps a usb-c to 3.5mm dongle) you should be able to get what you need on Amazon for around the $30 mark. I wish I could be of more help. I would like to think that you could run 2 "channels" (one being power and the other being audio) into the same port and have it work, but never having tried it, all I can offer is pure conjecture. Sorry I couldn't be of more assistance.

      2. I can just use the DJI Mic completely wireless and simply sync the video with the audio afterwards during editing.
      3. The GoPro Pro 3.5mm Mic Adapter has a 3.5mm mic input AND a USB-C input too. So, I can buy the Ulanzi G9-4 as well as the GoPro Pro 3.5mm Mic Adapter that has a 3.5mm mic input AND a USB-C input and that will also do the job.
