Faulty GoPro Hero 7 Silver | Can I FIX it?

- I saw a broken GoPro Hero 7 Silver for sale on eBay for the bargain price of £9! The seller said that a small child had inserted the SD card the wrong way round, and it was jammed in. Let's see if we can repair it!
I'm not an expert, but I do enjoy trying to fix things.

I cannot begin to imagine how you find the time to produce videos of fixing things. You could certainly expand your realm of content by simply showing more of your day to day life. Not that you should ever stop making buy it fix it videos. I learn a great deal from watching those. Thank you for creating this content.
Thanks👍, sometimes it is quite a struggle to get a video out, and I've spent (including editing) around 3-4 days making a video before. Even this one took over a full day if you include the editing time, then watching the video back, tweaking it again, repeat (sometimes I do this a couple of times) then doing a thumbnail. A lot of people have no idea what goes on behind the scenes, as I'm usually quite busy with things around the farm too, or fixing the wife's bloody car 😂😂😂😂
@@BuyitFixitLucky for us, that you like to share. I think that most of us are in awe at your life in that beautiful place and what you accomplish in your videos. I await your videos each week with much anticipation. This week's video was a bit shorter but the end was the absolute best with the footage from the GoPro. Thanks for replying to everyone here in the comments. Please don't ever lose that accent. 😁
I do try and respond to nearly all comments, sometimes I miss the odd couple or if people are being ****s. I doubt I'll ever lose my accent as I'm getting on in years now lol. Hopefully my eyesight and hands keep working 👍
@@BuyitFixit Editing work is top-tier. Great video.
Grind the worn part off your T3 bit Mick. Take it back down to a healthy shape
exactly what I was going to say, but i thought i'd wait till the end of the video before i commented in case he did just that, been there done that and looked like a twit..🤣🤣🤣
Great idea, cheers guys 👍
But spray it with water as you grind it as a bit that small will heat up fast and lose it's temper.
A great repair, the next one will be easier now you know some of the secrets to disassembling the little devils :) They give remarkable results don't they?
Good luck with the farm,
things are tough for you guys. Just a hobby farmer myself.
@@roy2689 lol ! ditto !
@@BuyitFixitin the past I've also had success with opening the T3 hole with a precision hand drill to slightly smaller than a T5, then gently hammer a T5 into the round hole, the splines should cut their own shape in the screw head. It works with any size torx or hex that's rounded out as well, drill it up a size or 2 and hammer a bigger torx bit in
None of the damage was caused by a child "jamming" an SD card in that camera. All of the damage happened when ham-handed adult panicked and went all Hulk-Smash on the card slot trying to get it out to help rescue their Instagram shoot.
😂😂😂😂😂
😂😂😅😅
Mick, what a beautiful farm you care for and live on! Thanks for showing the insides of the gopro... always wondered how they were put together.
Cheers mate 👍You're very welcome 🙂
Your dexterity is most envious, tiny parts even under my giant mag glass is the most troubling part of working on things. Fat fingers and old age don't help much either😒 Great repair, surprised you found the card slot module for sale, good old Ali. $400 camera for $20, not a bad deal bro. Landscape is breathtaking there, Wales or thereabouts I'm guessing?, beautiful country. Thanks for the video, well done and results were super. Enjoy the camera. See ya soon.
Cheers Terry👍, Cumbria in North of England. My fingers / eyes and old age don't help much either!
That was quite a fiddly little camera . I am impressed that you were able to get that working again ! Especially when I think they are probably not meant to be taken apart . Thanks for sharing your beautiful property with us , absolutely gorgeous!😊
Thanks 👍 It's nice in the summer, it can be very bleak in the winter months!
Beautiful countryside ❤
Thanks 😊👍
Wow reminds me of when I was based at Otterburn ranges, I used to hike all over the place sometimes wandering to over Carlisle way or over to Hexham where me uncle still worked at the bank there or up into Acomb Fell and set up camp and just chill for couple days with tent, cooker on the go for me tea and a little radio to remind me of humanity. Had immense fun around old Haltwhistle station as it was back then still fairly intact just no tracks :D Also walked the old line up to Kielder water very pleasant then back to base and shouted at by the sergeants hehe
Haltwhistle is about 20 miles North of me. We sometimes get "takeaway" from the chippy there as there isn't much around where we live.
Those connectors are a bit fidgety, but I usually have no problem with them. It's the antenna connectors that irritate me 😊 Great work 🍻
Thanks 👍Yes I think these and the antenna connectors are both fidgety!😂😂😂😂
And STILL 😂👍the undefeated fixer champion👍
😂😂😂😂👍
Oh Christ, a double "Plastic Plectrum" case removal job..... OOOHHHH it sounds like a rather painful medical procedure 😵😵😵😵😵🤣🤣🤣🤣🤣
Anyway, thanks for another great video Canny Lad.

👍👍👍👍👍👍👍👍👍👍👍👍
😂😂😂Cheers 👍
Internal design wise, it's amazing how little seems to have changed in this gopro compared to the older hero 5 black. I purchased a faulty gopro, where someone had inserted the sd card _next_ to the sd card slot (really easy mistake to make when looking at the design!), and that completely shredded the screen ribbon.
One new screen later, it worked!
Nice 👍It's the first time I've ever looked at one. It seemed very cheap so I thought I'd take a chance. I was quite surprised when it turned on! I was expecting water damage or something and the SD to be just a side issue (you know what some of these sellers are like on eBay 😂😂😂)
Nice fix and beautiful scenery on the test footage :)
Cheers Mr JSV 👍
"Hot Snot" love this expression for hot glue😂😂😂😂
😂😂😂👍
The Army had something called Rhino Snot while I was in. It could be used to create something along the lines of a helipad by mixing it with sand.
I did not expect to find this kind of video. A great job of filming and commenting all along
Thank you 👍🙂
14:17: "One moment, please" :) Just like Big Clive puts it, even though the follow up is immediate :D
😂😂😂😂👍
You can file the tip of your torx bits. 👍
Good tip!😂😂😂😂👍
My experience several years (decades) ago was access to replacement parts. Great repair!!!
Cheers 👍Yes it's usually a lot easier to get replacement parts these days from the likes of ebay or aliexpress.
Sehr guter Job, danke. LG
Danke 👍
I wonder if they use MIPI connections, like laptops all have unique LVDS connectors, but mipi is just 24, 30 or 60 - [ for the imx585 ].
I'm not sure, I didn't really look at the camera sensor part.
I do a lot of electronic work here and most of my problem is what you do and trying to figure out what is wrong with it. I have pretty much everything I need except for the oscilloscope which is kinda pricey here in the states but I made do with what I have tho.
Might be worth even getting one of those little Amazon DSO scopes. They aren't great but they only cost around £20-30.
Excellent job!!
Those tiny fiddly connectors and parts always give me palpitations, my meat-hooks weren't made for working on such delicate things...🤣🤣🤣
Cheers mate 👍Yes sometimes I struggle too, my hands are usually quite rough from doing things on either cars / tractors or just generally around the farm!
@@BuyitFixit by the way, every time you say "round the outside", about screws or clips, in any of your videos, like at 6:53 in this video all I can hear is Eminem in my head. In much the same way I hear Zombie by The Cranberries when anyone mentions "in their head", as I've just done... 🤣🤣🤣

@generaldisarray 😂😂😂😂😂
Another kind of magic. As always, another great find and fix.
Thanks again!
Cheers 👍
Awesome work.
Thank you! Cheers!
An excellent tricky fix. And unless I'm mistaken Northumberland's looking great too. Thanks for sharing.
Thanks Brian 👍Close...we're just outside of Northumberland, more North Pennines (Cumbria).
Great fix. You make it look pretty easy.
Thanks 👍
Well done Mick, a bargain, the farm is looking good 😀
Cheers Mike👍
Im new here and i find you're the best thanks for your afford
Cheers 👍
Very nice repair lovely job.
Thank you very much!
For such a price and parts this is a very good camera to have in collection.
Cheers 🙂👍
That was a very interesting video, mate. It is like miniature surgery. 👌👌😊😊
Cheers mate 👍
Fiddly but awesome result.....cheers. !!
Cheers Andymouse 👍Fiddly definitely😂😂😂
great fix mate, I'm jealous of those views mate in the end shots!
Thanks 👍
Brilliant fix Mick, still a pretty good camera it looked great thanks for the upload 😊
Cheers Gary 👍
Oh dear, seeing the frame for the protection glass being pried off was tough to watch :D Great repair otherwise, as always!
Thanks! 👍 Yes I did try to look at the how to disassemble it first, but there wasn't too many videos out there for the silver 7. One was a guy using a dremel and the other guy used a tool and it just seemed to pop off (I thought it must have been clipped on after watching him do it) so I pretty much did the same as what he did 😥
I wonder if you could sand your rounded off T3 bit down to expose a fresher profile
Good Idea Nick 👍
Incredible amount of internal damage to that SD card reader, so the sellers explanation seems a bit off. Great work as usual!
Cheers 👍yes it was well mangled!
Cut the torx bits down with a dremel if they round off 👍
Cheers for the tip Dean 👍a few others mentioned the same.
Those cameras are still going for upwards of $300 Canadian on the resale market. Great work!
Cheers 👍
I highly recommend using Rose's metal instead of low melting solder. It is basically the same but only costs a fraction!
Thanks for the tip. I'll look into that 👍
26:15 Looks like heaven on earth oh my god!
On my first navy cruise, I woke up one morning and went topside to see the most beautiful green hillside near Greenock, Scotland (June 1971)
Yes, glorious the last couple of days. It can be very bleak (wind / rain / cold) up here as we are 1500ft above sea level.
Tell me you’re from the NE without saying so: ‘Hot Snot’ 😂
😂😂😂😂👍
Not made to fix that one, well done.
Cheers 👍
Nice fix! However, you may find over time that that seal between the glass & lens isn't to make it waterproof as such, but moisture-proof, hence condensation build-up between the two may become an issue no matter where you use it, indoors or out :(
Good point. I've got some Aquasure or I could always run a smear of silicone around it.
@@BuyitFixit Hmmm.. I wonder how feasible it would be to adapt a cheap kitchen vacuum sealer unit into something you might use for this sort of thing..?
Can u do a video on how to test components in a PCB. Like when a transistor is bad vs good etc.
I did a few videos on this a while back have a look there was a set of 4. Sometimes parts in a pcb will give false readings due to other components in the circuit, so best to remove if you are not sure.
@@BuyitFixit I did see all 4 a couple days ago but in ur video 2000W Pure Sine Inverter. At minute 7:06 u did a couple very quick transistor checks but I did not understand how.
Looks like you live in a beautiful place! Where do you live? BTW- Nice job on the GoPro. 👍 Really like your video's - Subscribed a few months ago.
Thanks! 👍 Cumbria, near the North Pennines.
@@BuyitFixit - Thanks!
@@BuyitFixit That's a canny trek into Gateshead for your repair cafe stints
There's a one not far in Alston 😉
Wondering how you keep that blue mat so clean 😂. Mine is a mess every fix.
Small Milwaukee vacuum, then IPA with some kitchen roll 🙂👍
Respect to the low paid workers who make this stuff for a pittance
Are you talking about me producing the content 😂😂😂😂😂
*Hail!* Not a cent wasted, when all see & learn. "Read instructions", needed at times.
Awesome view, animal make the scenery. Saw your photo of Valais lambs few months ago, left comment, but gone now. hmm YT. My Uncle had 'small'^ homestead, baby lambs inside that time of year, too. Much Fun! Thanks for video. All the best, *Cheers!*
^ what is 'small'? : }
Thanks 👍 Not sure about the YT comment, strange. We only have a small homestead too around 30 acres, although as you say that might be large compared to others.
@@BuyitFixit If animals are happy and Garden grows well, All Good. : } With barn[s], trees, creek, & land to run, enough for all to Play.
a bit of rant - very troublesome ...
- just keep [US] tyrannical government from invading, as what's happening here. Pennsylvania Amish Farm[s] suffering much abuse, to point govt. (hints) threat re: [animals & disease]. Case on going, Amos Miller has Great Attorneys; Tyrants will lose. this Too, Teaches all ...
If that is your garden , you live in heaven...
Agree it is nice but today I''ve just been out twice with a large 15L backpack spraying weeds and it's not even 1/4 done 😂😂😂
@@BuyitFixit😁🐝🐝
The SD card is more than worth the cost of buying the GoPro :)
😂😂😂😂
Do you still get subsidy's for your live stock production, they were stopped here in the early 80s New Zealand that is ?
No. There used to be a subsidy for having land but even that is stopping, but because we only have 30 acres it wasn't much anyway. The sheep are more to keep the grass down than make any money.. Part of the reason why we got a few different rare breeds such as the Black Nose Valais.
@@BuyitFixit Nice response thanks
Hi I have a power supply for a notifier id3000 fire panel which as stopped working just wondering if you won't to take a look at it for your channel
Sure. Drop me an email at the channels name at out look dot com 👍
Life is good when your neighbor is 600 acres away.
😂😂😂😂Our closest neighbour is about 1/4 mile away.
What a coincidence... I bought one on ebay to repair too lol
Nice one 👍 Hopefully you don't make the same mistake I did when disassembling the front lens cover 😂😂😂
I have always wanted to know what makes the GoPro work. Now I don't have to open up mine. Thank you lol
Cheers Fred. Now that lambing is finished I should have a bit more time to get a proper look at your item. Those track repair strips came, but they are bloody tiny! more for like an HDMI socket, so I might have to resort to using wire like you did.
Happy days.
Indeed!
How long did the module take to arrive
It was quite quick. Only about a week 👍
555 likes as I finish watching this video. I have perfect timing.
Good work 🥳🥳👍👍👍👍
Because, let you show us the videos and photos from the previous owner's 128GB SD card 😳😳😛😛😛🤪🤪 pleeeeease.
Thanks 👍The SD card appears to be damaged. It heats up when inserted into a reader and only shows a raw partition of 6GB or so and won't format.
@@BuyitFixit this is certainly a super² secret secret memory card with the lottery numbers for next week. You must find the Information 😭😭😭🤪
Great fix. That's it, blame a small child (an adult, who gives a £220 camera to a two-year-old, is clearly not responsible).
Cheers 👍😂😂😂😂
Clearly not designed by Sony during their heyday!
Amazing what a cheap fix those cameras are expensive.
You ever consider getting a small electric screwdriver?
I'm not a fan of them as I like to feel how tight screws are so they don't strip in things like plastic. Although I've an impact driver, which I use all the time and that's brilliant for removing and putting screws into wood.
I have an old Hero 4 Silver and it came with a clear plastic waterproof case. The camera ISN'T waterproof on its own, so the later ones may well be the same. Maybe somebody who's got one can confirm this?
I just did a quick search and from the hero 5 they seem to be waterproof down to 10 meters with the side door closed (it's missing on this one but you can buy replacements).
@@BuyitFixit Ah right, I didn't know that. Great job on the repair btw!
How the heck do you find things like this for 10$ on eBay? Some of the deals you are able to find are insane
It takes time and refined searching skills with eBay. Using Google search engine I found to produce better results then the eBay onsite search.
I was surprised it switched on when I received it. I expected it to be a lot worse. It was just luck that it had just been listed when I looked.
Spectacular place to live. Jealous.
Thanks 👍 It's great in the summer, but it can be really bleak in the winter...
So you have a farm?
Yep
@@BuyitFixit wow what a lovely place
My dad you to tell never force anything that doesn’t want to go.
I thought it was just clipped on, most things these days are just clipped together with plastic clips, and it honestly didn't take a lot for force. You live and learn I guess...
@@BuyitFixit Yes sir I love your channel and thank you.
Gopro cameras are really expensive, so whoever jammed in the sd card is clearly a technical novice with more money than sense.
😂😂😂👍
If you need it I will send you the wire I used.
Too fast
GoPro junk , why bother ? 🙄🙄🤦♀🤦♀👎👎👎👎
Why not? It's broken and I like repairing stuff...everyone has their own opinion 🙂
