  • We are often obsessed with the fear of making mistakes, because society has always taught us to be ashamed of them.
But according to Norma Cerletti it is mistakes that allow us to excel in life and to learn, even when it comes to a new language!
Can we find a way to make learning fun? This is the question that Norma's talk is about, conveying the importance of changing this paradigm of our culture.
Norma Cerletti is the most famous English teacher in Italy, with her community Norma's Teaching, founded in 2020 on social channels offering free English mini-courses. She learned English with perfect pronunciation in the United States in her fourth year of high school, and her first book was released on June 15, 2021.
    ITALIANO:
This talk was given at a TEDx event using the TED conference format but independently organized by a local community. Learn more at www.ted.com/tedx

A very inspiring speech on what scares many people when talking a foreign language: making mistakes and reactions that they provoke. Norma has given us an important lesson, which can be resumed perfectly in her last phrase: sometimes you win, sometimes you learn. Making mistakes is part of the process, so we don't have to be afraid of them, instead, we should embrace them and letting them being part of the complex. I really liked the call she made to students and teachers, hoping that our school system can change little by little (especially here in Italy). Thank you, Norma, you're such a good source of inspiration!

The more perfectionist we get, the more biased we become. (I loved every minute of this talk)

Commuovente.
Grazie Norma. Sei la nostra voce. Studiare deve essere divertente ( con impegno, logico).

Norma, congratulations on your achievements, your communication skills and inspirational attitude! We teach Italian, focusing on English speakers in particular, and it can be quite difficult to encourage students to put themselves out there and actively use the language without being paralysed by self-doubt. To all language students: you can do it! Forza! 💪🏻

Brava Norma!

Cara Norma, facile insegnare a chi è motivato. Ti piace vincere facile.

Troppo comodo dare tutta la responsabilità all'insegnante.

Sometimes you win, sometimes you learn! I didn't know this espression as long as I met your Instagram page! Since the very first time I though you could be THE BEST English teacher EVER, the one I was looking for to feed my passion for this wonderful language! We all know that perfection doesn't exist...but coming across your way of teaching I imagined how deep could have been your education and your effort to make yourself better and better, without giving up. I recognized myself in you... You couldn't have failed at talking like this in front of a hundred people or even more...because before being a spectacular teacher, you are a wonderful person @Norma'sTeaching

I really appreciated your point of view about teaching and making mistakes, it has been really helpful in order to bear in mind the final goal, learning a new language cannot be easy but it cannot be impossible as well 🙂 It’s evident you were so excited during the talk, I’m thinking about buying your new book but I don’t know if it can be helpful for my personal objectives, what do you suggest? Any advice is really appreciated!

In my opinion school doesn't work that way, right now. Right now, if a student makes a mistake, it is the teacher's fault and it becomes a teacher's problem. Parents blame the teachers. Feeling guilty depends on each person, on personal sensitivity. Forgetting a date can be a mistake for someone but not for someone else who doesn't know date, people, arithmetic operations and so on and doesn't want know these things because prefers playing.
No teacher makes tragedies for small mistakes, perhaps in the past.
The teacher makes the students try to learn, but sometimes, most of the time, the students don't want to try to learn and the parents just want good grades

I’m not sure if you were a victim of society but maybe victim of perfectionism 💗 Not all teachers are perfectionists and many people teach having fun, work having fun and have fun working is something humans should remember. What a horrible teacher you had, art cannot be red marked !!
True that parents often push too much their children and want them to achieve sometimes more than they can, and by doing so scar and sometimes destroy their children; it’s also true that some teachers are so full of their professionalism that sometimes fall into the red destructive pen mode..
Any scar can be healed luckily 💗I found the source of healing ………it’s amazing….Hope you do too, forgiving your teachers, forgiving parents and forgiving ourselves will become a lifelong wonderful project💗Have a good journey! 🤍
