Super helpful. Picked up my EX30 last weekend and still getting used to it’s ‘personality’… overall it drives and behaves brilliantly - I’ve come to the EX30 after 15 years of owning Mini Countrymans so having to adjust to being a Volvo owner / driver… Yes, I’m disappointed by lack of CarPlay but I can live without until ready to ship / download. Being an Apple user for decades I’m well used to life as an early adopter and feel the EX30 is out in the world prepared to grow up and into adulthood - as early owners we have the advantage of being amongst the first to be on the road but the minor headaches of awaiting full features as they are rolled out and / or improved via software updates. I can live with that - I like the fact that my EX30 will continue to grow.
Thanks Thom! Got my EX30 two weeks ago with 1.3 installed by the dealership and we had good laugh, when we checked out the car setting menus (in German) and saw that, from the second level onward, everything was in Swedish ;)
Hi Tom, Thanks for this info. I have a MY 2023 C40 and absolutely love it, bar one thing… With each pending major update, I soooo wish Volvo would enable the phone as digital key function! My wife drives a Polestar 2 and it is so super convenient to have the phone as key ability as you always have your phone on you. Anyway, really enjoy your channel and your objective commentary on Volvos.
Again, you provide Volvo-related content at a detail level I don't see elsewhere. Thanks, Thom. I must say, having lived through a year or more of major software issues when my '22 XC60 was new, it's disheartening to hear they are having issues with the XC30. They'll get it sorted, but Volvo have to get better at fully baking what they release so they can spend their efforts improving it, not fixing it.
Thanks for the kind words Richard! Appreciated. Let’s hope the EX90 will be the first where they demonstrate that quality control is on top of its game!
Absolutely rubbish. First time Volvo owner and I’ll probably never, ever get one again. They need to sack their entire software development team, all of them and start again. Who the hell thought it would be a good idea the hide the “distance between vehicles” when in adaptive cruise control so deeply in the menu??? How is that considered safe??? Ideally a little dial on the stalk, or at the very least prominent on the screen when in cruise control. Or just remember your own settings, rather than having to re-set them every journey. Same for “4 wheel Performance”, why is the toggle on/off buried so deep in the menu??? That’s something you’d turn on when you need it, right?? Why is the music settings on the same side as the drive stalk and cruise setting on the other side? Surely it would be much more logical to have them the other way around? Why no volume dial? Still no AppleCarPlay, in fact no software updates since I received it in early March? So many bugs, the charging level one being a massive pain. Oh and there is water in my upper offside tail light, noticed it a few days after I collected it. The plastic behind where you wirelessly charge you phone is really easily scratched and looks really scruffy already. Finally the Bristol dealership, Waylands Volvo, terrible customer service, called several times and was told I’d get a call back, instead I get an email two weeks later, my reply to which has still not been replied to, two weeks later. Really annoyed, having just got a 45 grand car, no one can be bothered to reply to me??!! My last car was a Range Rover Evoque Plug In Hybred and that car had issues, but, the customer service was amazing and each issue was dealt with very quickly with very nice courtesy cars provided each time. I think a Google review for the dealership is on the way. It’s such a shame, the EX30 is a lovely car to drive and looks great.
Appalled with Volvo! The decision to withdraw the OTA upgrade is basically treating EX30 customers really badly. I wonder what recourse there is in law here in the U.K. Their literature clearly states what should come with the car. The most annoying thing for us is not being able to charge the car by schedule overnight with the cheaper energy tariff because our car refuses to charge at 32A despite setting it that way. Once we lock the car after moving the slider to 32A it reverts to 6A! As has been highlighted, there are many other software bugs which make this car a joke. We paid for Apple Car Play - where is it? We paid for a Digital Key - where is it? As for getting my dealer to install the upgrade, I was told two days ago that even they do not have the upgrade available. Why is that? This is a very poor show from Volvo.
They did not fix the radio stopping under braking in 1.3. The main fix from it was the charging limit of 6 amps not being imposed every time you restart the car. I did notice some new bluetooth connection problems with my phone in 1.3 though. They also translated a lot of things like lane stay aid into my local language. (dutch)
Thanks Bob 🍌 I read a lot of various ‘solutions’ and what not from EX30 owners. Seems that almost every car got something sorted differently, lol! Keep me posted :)
Really interesting comments on here, I really like the look of the XC30, was seriously considering getting one, but reading the problems owners are having has really put me off.
I would like to ask Thom, if he knows if anyone from Volvo actually test drove the EX30? There are so many flaws not just in the software but the design itself I can’t believe this was signed off for sale by a competent person.
I’ve updated my MY24 XC60 T6 and every time I start the car the air con switches on. It definitely didn’t do this pre update and it’s annoying as it uses battery capacity and you have to go into the sub menu to turn it off. I’m waiting for a call from the tech at the dealer.
Anyone who comes across this video, do not buy Volvo. Have an XC60, 13 months old. 3 times after OTA updates I've lost the centre screen, goes black and won't come back on. Have had to return to the dealer each time and they won't offer a loan car replacement for the day while they fix the issue. The software is so buggy. The irony, when the salesperson was selling it to me, they told me how Volvo chose to go with Andorid because Vovlo realised they are in the car business, not the software business. I can tell you they are in neither, and certainly not in the customer service business.
Think I may have been a little over the top. It turns out the 1.3 update was further updated to 1.3.1. My OTA update stalled at 91% meaning the car had to be taken to the dealer to be installed. This was done successfully this morning. Now we hope many glitches will be sorted out. Fingers crossed. The car really does drive brilliantly. Let’s hope the software does the same soon.
My ex30 has the 1.3 software and the brake / radio issue is NOT resolved. The Internet connectivity is pretty flakey on it so I wouldn't wager that's the reason OTA has been postponed.
In Danmark Volvo dealers charges around 2-300€ for upgrading EX30 to 1.3 by wire. They definitely do not want to fill their workshops with cars that just needs a software upgrade.
With the most recent update, on my late 2022 XC60 recharge with B&W audio, I’ve noticed that the surround doesn’t work until you change to another audio setting, then switch back to surround.. it comes back. Happens every time I restart my car. So annoying.
Its just unacceptable: what happened to thourough product testing before launch? This reminds me of Austins back in the 70s....😵💫😳 I understand that there will be gremlins, but this is simply not good enough. I have updated to 3.0.3 in my V60, and lost the sign recognition. The autobrake in reverse, is not good either, before I had no complaints. Next week, it will back to the workshop, this time for some mechanical driveline issues, that will take 2-3 days to fix.
Cars are thoroughly tested but software is insanely complex in modern cars. Just look at how many cars are delayed in production because of software. It does make me think that it’s best to order cars when they have been on the road for some time when most of the bugs have been identified and fixed
Hi there, Volvo XC60 MY2024 is here. After the 3.0.3 update I also lost the sign recognition. And suddenly today, when I was starting another trip (southern Europe) - a sign recognition began working! I can't explain it other then either miracle or either Volvo sent some hidden update. The only thing that was different for me this weekend - I had to park a car outside and the battery was at 0%. Maybe try to reset your console. But it is definitely super odd.
@@hdfly There is always hope! I have actually already both restarted and reconnected, without any result. Then I contacted the Volvo importer, and they stated that an update will fix this very soon. On my wifes fully identical V60, the road sign recognition, has actually never ever worked. The dealer/workshop has no clue why, and dont really care either. Its such a shame, as Volvo do make some fantastic cars; good looking, comfortable and fast.
Thanks for this. The only problem I have since updating my xc40 to the latest, is that when I park up and open the driver or passenger door Google announces that she did not understand the question - strange since I never asked anything?
hey Thom! thank you for the video and info. Do you have any indication on when these updates will bring Wireless Apple CarPlay? Will Volvo bring it to iCup vehicles as well? Thank you! (i have an EX30 and a XC60 Plug-in, would love to have the feature in both :))
Thanks! I have no firm date on Carplay for the EX30 yet but do know it's high on the list of items to be pushed to all cars by OTA. Though, similar to XC and C40 about 2 years ago, it can take a little while before it is 'quality-wise' OK enough to do this. I'd say somewhere this year. As for wireless carplay for XC60, that will not come. You could consider a carplay adapter which enables you to wirelessly use carplay. :-)
I got a XC40 P8 2020 and it took years for it to be decent software wise. The EX30 is too small anyways but I would never ever buy that car if the answer is “ It will get better “ that just gives me nightmares from my car. This is a huge red flag. Also the EX40 has the same interior as my old one. Fairly disappointed with Volvo and that is an understatement. I am changing to a different brand later this year
My MY24 Polestar 2 got the new 3 version and so far so good. Really interesting that Polestar and Volvo software and updates are still the same. I guess they will be forever. Not sure how this will work for the Polestar 3 and 4?
Glad to hear! As they share platforms I expect that e.g. P3 will share updates with the EX90. Though, the P4 is a typical Geely platform so I expect that one to actually have separate updates.
Hoping against hope that the flagship EX90 is fully tested before release £120k for a vehicle delivered with un ironed software issues will do the badge cred no good at all ..
Seems to be the problem of many ex30 owners, in my case it happens only when AC charging at my home wallbox and I have to manually increase from 6 to 16 amps every time (as I have a 11kwh charger) At a DC fast charger recently it was not a problem. Some users have posted in blogs that if you gradually increase the amp limit up to 32 (not in one shot but like 2-3 steps at a time) it should stay there. Will try that and see if that’s a fix until it’s fixed with an update.
