Rightly, the presenters recommend smaller wheels for performance (as do many reviewers for many cars). However, all the manufacturers' websites offer larger wheels for higher trims with no option to get the smaller wheels from the base trim. Why is this? Should the reviewer community pressure the manufacturers to offer this.
When we purchased our 2024 kona from nottm , the N line S ev, were were offered the smaller 17" wheels as a no cost option.my wife decided to keep the 19" wheels as they look better and range isn't an issue.
Atleast Volvo does it just call them say you want the mode with longest range and then but small weels on them. I know Volvo and polestar in Sweden does it. Make a call to them
So, update. I've just received my 64kWh Kona Ultimate. I have to say that I'm astounded by the refinement and build quality. Having the physical buttons is just a godsend. Everything is in usable reach and intuitive to boot. OTA update gave us wireless Android Auto and Car Play to appreciate the not-too-bad Bose OE system. The tech is amazing and once you've figured the shortcut key can be programmed to vehicle assists, you can turn the driver alert warnings and speed alarms within 2 seconds, as part of your pre-ride ritual. Living in hilly rural area, it's great to get all that regen. Life on the twisties doesn't invoke much body roll or lean, so I'm impressed. Ride isn't crashy and I'd say it's nicely damped on our overbanded, potholed roads. A comfy family cruiser it is. The cabin, finished in white leather is light airy and roomy. Rear facing child seat fits spot on and the reclined position means that my youngest doesn't stamp her feet on the backrests, unlike on my X5. Relegates my my X5 for local journeys when carrying our mountain bikes and kit and the wife's countryman for pottering around. Wanted a car that was slightly bigger than the Countryman to swallow up the kit for 3 mountain bikers and a bum shuffler, and this delivers! We've only had it a day. but I'm growing to love the EV life. Also going to quite enjoy the massive fuel savings with Hive charging.
You're like early iPhone vs Android users. 😅 On another note, my opinion is that cars with all the features buried in the touch screen should be forbidden. It is not allowed to even have your phone in your hand while driving, but it's allowed to look away from the road and search for essential features buried in the computer. Also, does the sensor beep when the driver is fiddling with the control screen? And not looking at the road?
@@DeezjaVu I agree with @zarodkiewicz. Voice requests increase cognitive load too. Especially when you need to repeat them because you're misunderstood. When the car basically drives itself and makes these decisions for you, it'll be fine not to have buttons. For now, not having them is dangerous.
I have a Tesla Model 3 and to be honest I no longer look away from the road to locate the switch/knob/button. Most settings are done and changed before driving. Sat nav can be set prior to driving or using voice. The temperature setting is within a finger reach to tap plus or minus, or again use voice. I thought it strange that stalks and buttons were gone from the Tesla but it made sense and it works out to be far easier.
@@MyOtherCarsAZeppelin Quit clutching at straws... By that argument, never take any passengers with you. If you do, don't talk to them, don't interact with them at all. Never take your children in your car. In fact, you should drive all by yourself at all times. Effin idiots...
Greetings from Norway….the land of the EV’s. Great video, but I must make a couple of comments. The new 2024 Kona (which I now own) is made as an EV to start with, with the internal combustion engine as an option, unlike the previous Kona which was first designed as a fossil car. As for the annoying warning chimes, I turn them off every trip and takes just 6 seconds. I have saved the settings page on my “Favourites” star button on the steering wheel which I access at start up. It’s so simple and straight forward. Another feature not mentioned is remote parking with the use of the “smart key”. Parking in a tight spot? No problem, get out of the car and move the car backwards and forwards by using the smart key. This is a completely new car with only the name “Kona” remaining. It’s an absolute joy to drive, and as for charging speeds, not sure what all the fuss is about. I charge my car overnight in my garage to 80% which gives me 350km (218m) in winter which is plenty for my daily use. In summer at 100% I get nearly 600km (375m) urban driving with minimal use of climate control. Another important feature the 2024 Kona has is the “Over The Air updates” (OTA) which is a must these days. I have driven many EV’s for 8 years here in Norway and I must say that the new Kona is fantastic value for the money, and one of the best cars I’ve owned.
Just an FYI..the UK has currently band remote driving/parking abilities. So that feature can't be used here and why you'll never hear the review it or really discuss it.
The Kona is still on an ICE platform, maybe they designed the sheet metal as an EV first but the underpinnings of the car are still underpinnings of an ICE car, which then got a battery and motors shoved into it in the case of the Kona electric.
I really wanted the EX30 but couldn't wait. I bought a Kona and am in LOVE! I honestly smile while driving this car. So much power for a small price tag.
Yeah, the Kona EV has always been seriously under-appreciated. As a company car TM3LR driver for the last two yrs, if it was my own money I had to spend, I would go Kona without a second thought. The Volvo is Chinese, not so different from MG4 etc., which brings it's usual compromises.
Volvo EX30 is chinese car based on Geely, so I my choice would be Kona! :-) I would like to support "west" manufactures like Hyundai in my country Czechia, where Kona ev is producing... and the battery Kona is also from EU - LG chem Poland...
Volvo looks great. But I would take the Kona every day of the week. Buttons, Knobs, HUD, more space, V2L and... some instruments behind the steering wheel. Plus it's a second generation, I hope they learnd some things in the last generation kona and made it more reliable. I'm not a badge snob.
You totally Right! I don't care about fast charging if the car is really efficient and the Kona is efficient! I own a Kia e Niro 64 KWh and for the daily driving, I never need to use the fast charging.
Good comparison. EX30 has huge potential but terrible real world efficiency. 170-200 miles at best. Cramped rear. No buttons and numerous software glitches. Kona all round more solid, efficient and reliable.
That's quite something to say that a Hyundai is 'more solid' than a Volvo...but I would tend to agree having owned a Kia e-Niro from new for 5 years now. The cars coming out of the Hyundai Motor Group are just as well built as any German, Swedish or Japanese car I've owned in my 50 years of driving.
Not sure what car you were driving? There is a smaller battery version in the UK but the EX30 shown here should comfortably do 400kms highway and 450kms around the city.
That’s the point. It “should do” much bigger range but is doesn’t. Please see YT reviews from Volvo_Christiensen and Kris. They have both confirmed the poor range. And we did test drive the bigger battery version (69kWh/65kWh useable). Nice car to drive but not good enough.
I have the new kona 65kw as my first EV and I'm no expert! What i will say is it is a joy to drive, very easy and has everything i need. Buttons were a must for me, but each to their own!
The look at the screen in the Volvo has got me thinking. It would be interesting to take a group of cars to a test track to see how easy it is to do common functions while driving at around 40mph without cruise control. Somewhere with lane markings like Millbrook could be ideal for that sort of test.
That's where the voice controls come into play, with google voice and the system is getting another update very soon OTA with Volvo already said things are changing with updates coming soon. Ultimately this is just the same as mobile phone manufacturers doing exactly the same for your mobile, so no issues there. Saves touching the screen, yes I agree at lower speeds it's slightly different if in busy traffic but very little traffic and motorway driving a different ball game. Also all the other tech available on both like lane keep assist, lane departure etc all helps.👍
What things are people trying to change while driving? For me, temperature is 19 degrees all the time so I never change that, headlights are automatic, wipers are automatic. If I'm using the satnav I put that in before I set off. I generally have the radio set to the same station but if Im using spotify I use siri to control it.
I want buttons for heated seats, heated wheel, lane assist (off or on), driving mode, fog lamps, heated rear window. And to sensibly adjust wing mirrors and open glove box. The Volvo doesn’t do that. Never mind no rear space or HUD.
A fan of the EX30 design and offering but just BEWARE that the cheapest version does NOT have a HEAT PUMP so expect to have at least a 30% reduction of the range when running in colder climates, which is very poor considering the max range is 209 miles!!! So getting only around 140mile range for a £33k electric vehicle is shocking and no excuse and heat pumps should be standard on all EVs.
I'm in South Africa and hippo's are not silver, they're mostly purplish-grey or blue-black, but brownish-pink on the underside and the eyes. 😮 Oh, milk is white or off-white/pink, because it secretes two kinds of unique acids.
I personally wouldn't want to get close enough to a Hippo to find out... aren't they one of the most human-killing critters out there? Possibly second to the big Croc, but a nasty fella to deal with. Actually, you have a number of the most people-hating animals there, Buffs, Flumps, pussy-cats of various types, hissing-sids, and The Lord knows what else... plus your every-day human bandits.
@@wilsonwwy Do those centimeters make so much difference? And why call cars longer than 4 metres B-segment? The first C-segmenter, the VW Golf was 3,75m long or short.
Drove the EX30 at the Everything Electric show in Excel Centre London. It is small ! The back is very disappointing and the single screen is truly awful. For the styling the EX30 looks great from the outside, but inside it is a bit meh ! Very light steering that really makes you feel totally disconnected from the road. Nippy it is, worth the money it is not. The Kona feels like an altogether different car, familiar comfortable and as a driver you just feel in control. Loads of space in the back seats, the boot feels bigger. It’s pretty nippy and plenty fast enough. It may not have the styling of the EX30 but it is worth the money. It just feels solid and roomy.
Interestingly the first gen kona was similarly just a little bit too small in the back and boot too (as were the first gen Nissan jukes) £1 says the next version of the Volvo gets bigger as well.
The steering is amazing. My daily is a 911 so I can fairly say that the driving experience and steering is utterly pleasant in the EX30. I don’t know what you were expecting. It is also possible that the steering sensitivity was set differently (you have 3 modes). You can’t look at the Kona without throwing up, come on!
@@StephenColes we've got the ex30 coming soon (motability, woo!) and the turning circle on it was very good. Currently drive a tiguan which has the worst turning circle ever, previous to that a Yeti which I loved and was great to park.
It really isn’t, lights and wipers are automatic, gears are on the stalk as are wiper speed and washers, volume and cruise controls are on the wheel, stereo, heating, satnav are all controlled by voice - what buttons do you need? I just did a four hour round trip in light, dark, rain and shine and I needed to touch the central tablet all of four times.
In the next few years, the EU is going to stop it for safety reasons. Imagine thousands of drivers weaving into each other because they are not looking at the road. And speed freaks doing 140 and someone crosses their path! I don't trust the car's safety systems enough for that. Neither should anybody else.
The EX30 has been designed to look good, and it does, but at the expense of inside space, this is highlighted by the Smart #1 which is on the same platform but is much more spacious inside.
@@fredbloggs72 I know :) I was able to compare both of them during Everything Electric last month, and literally last Friday we decided to get Smart #1 as temporary Enyaq replacement. You got matrix lamps, HUD, much more space in the rear and you can slide the bench. and 22kW charging for Type 2
I am a huge Volvo fan and i am in love with my 2007 C30. But when I went to try EX30 a big no for me. I get the progres, but many peoplče stil love some simple solutions in cars with buttons. Too much sensors and electronics for my tase. So i guess i will stick with my C30 for a bit more. Am I really the only one left that likes manual things over electronics, buttons ower touch screen?
I tried both of these last month, as need to change company car early next year. The Volvo is very stylish and the Tesla like interior is great, but it is actually a pretty small car and not cheap in the bigger battery version. The Kona is more middle-of-the road on everything but you get a lot more spec for spec for similar prices. I’d take a Model 3 over either, but then I looked at leasing rates on our company scheme and the Kona is over £100 a month cheaper than the Volvo and £200 cheaper than a Model 3. Given the Kona is an all round bigger car, I’ll probably order one, especially as I can get the top of the range Kona for way less than the Volvo.
Great comparison, here in Canada however the Volvo EX30 Ultra is nearly $12,000 CAD more than the Kona Electric ultimate. Making the decision much easier.
A roof that opens is soooo useful for cargo possibilities: paddle board, small tree stand8ng up, long pieces of lumber etc. I dont care for panoramic roof. The kona can also st9re a spare tire, an actual one
Kona all the way, and mine has been a treat. Comparatively much better value. Tons of space for a family, heat pump, and FWD with winter tires sorts out the North Vancouver hills
Some time ago I walked into a Volvo dealership to enquire about buying one. I was told that a heat pump was only available on the top of the range model. A heat pump wasn’t even an option on anything less. Next stop Hyundai. Heat pumps are INCLUDED in the prices of the Kona. That was it. I ordered a Kona. Since then I have learned from Electrifying that the Volvo has software issues so deliveries are being delayed. There can be nothing worse than a high spec car with software issues IMHO. Good review ladies. Right result. 👍
I got in the last 2 years with my Polestar 2 more than 7 OTA updates which improves the car very much even the range was better. This the same Google automotive system as in the EX30 (only the GUI is different). The Kona before got in 2 years only small updates in the workshops, not to compare. Voice control , Google maps integrated in the car, some nice apps from the google store and so on. Best system (only Tesla is really good, maybe a little better.)
I have a EX30 for a month now. Coming from a 2014 V40 it was a big change. But now everything is so easy to use. You have voice control, the Speedometer like Tesla has. So no problems with missing physical buttons.
we've got ours on order and when I tested it i was expecting to HATE the no buttons and just one screen thing, but even just on the test I didn't even notice it really. Glad to hear you're enjoying yours!
I like the fact the Volvo has a sensor so that it can tell you off for taking your eyes off the road to navigate the touch screen menus for basic functions.. which should have had buttons. Must be Volvo's commitment to safety.
The humor in this video is so entertaining. lol thats why i've subbed. I mean most people that watch car reviews dont really go out and buy the cars. especially immediately so it helps if the video is fun to watch😂
Kona EV platform Actually, the Hyundai Kona does have its own EV platform because that’s how designed, and then they added in the hybrid and petrol technology. Heated and ventilated seats
I had the old Kona the 22 and i had high hopes for the EX30 but the number of issues with the volvo smells just like fisker...totally unfinished while the kona is a tested and tried car and it just..works. We also have an 8 year old Kia niro recharge hybrid and that car except for services has cost us a total of 1000$ in a full brake change this year..and the kona cost me 0 bucks in 50 000km. I am not buying another stupid non software ready car (had ID3 as a company car and we returned 36 of them since they were shitty and stood more still then driving. Right at the moment i would def pick the Kona and frankly i live in a HEAVY snowy area in the winter with extreme cold and tons of snow and i have never ever needed 4x4 to get around and neither ever needed studded tires. If the price is equal i would any day go for the kona. Now daily driving an MG4 electric and had 1 single update of the whole car and it is great. So for me no EX30 with all the issues it has.
I think comparing EX30 to Fisker is really inaccurate. Fisker actually has major functional issues, and that company is about to go bankrupt. The EX30 just is stylistically plain/boring like a Model 3 interior. That's not on the same level as Fisker's nonsense at all.
People have an issue with lack of buttons and all on 1 screen yet they fail to mention the best selling ev car brand, yes Tesla they been doing this for ages and Tesla owners love it.
when i am driving, whenever i mess around with the 'one screen for all', say to turn on the heated seat, my wife just panics and thinks we are going to crash; so i ask her to mess around with the screen for me but she won't look away from road in case we crash; therefore no changes can be made via the screen 🤔; i am not sure if this says more about my driving, the cars controls or the her fear of crashing...
The proportions of the EX30 have always confused me a little, surely the bonnet could've been shorter? It looks too long for the car and the rest is left with cramped seats and boot.
What a brilliant review! Two of the most entertaining, intelligent, observant ladies on the web. So hugely entertaining, thanks ladies - you're wonderful!
Thanks for the video. The Kona looks like 2 car-engineers had order to create a new car; one was responsible for the upper part and one for the lower part. Unfortunately, neither knew about the other and so two suggestions were made, which were then simply glued together. It´s a pity because the upper part looks really good... =/
I guess the issue with these versions at this price is the Tesla Model 3 with similar range is cheaper. Yes it’s a saloon, but if that’s not an issue, I can’t see why you would get either of them over it. Cheapest versions make a lot more sense.
@@btnbiker Why would anyone want a Chinese owned and made car like a Volvo? Same point you’re making on Tesla - people prejudices mean some won’t buy them. Vast majority don’t care they’ll just want the best car.
@@btnbikerTesla is much better product for the same price. You are a real moron if you are a musk hater. These other guys would not even have a decent EV on the market if it was not for Musk. For criticism of Musk follow the funding of the critics.
Model 3 is a big car. Better software. Faster. Better charging. Boot is big. Cheaper than both of these. A couple of grand more would get you the much bigger model Y.
Having a single screen with small buttons to press and multiple menus reduces safety. You have to take your eyes off the road for too long to make some of the changes. Not good. One big screen is a gimmick in my opinion. Great video, thanks.
Nicola's argument about buttons and knobs rings true with me. It just makes sense. Add also that the Kona has more options really ends the competition. As much as I like Volvo.....cramped back seats and an ipad standing up in the way, on the dash, just isn't my cup of tea.
Why do no reviewers ever test the voice controls in these cars? Does it ruin the 'no buttons are bad' narrative? the Ionic 6 I tested worked perfectly with the voice controls and it was perfectly usable.
I drove a Volvo for 24 years. I considered the EX30 but the lack of physical buttons, lead time, and the absence of Carplay ruled it out. I got an MG4 instead. The MG is much cheaper, has buttons and Carplay - perfectly adequate.
Yes, the design language of the Kona is all over the place; some are lovely and sweeping curves, and then there are all sorts of jagged edges...it's a crazy mixture. I prefer my Smart #1...noticeably cheaper than the EX30 on a 3-year PCP (a very nice looking option), plus the driver cluster and HUD.
I’ve had the XC40 recharge for two years. The google android based infotainment system is horrible. Often crashes, lags for no reason, has to be rebooted often, remnants of android for phones occasionally rears its head and updates seem to have slowed it down. The google voice detection is good but often for no reason, it will understand what I’ve said and then say it’s not connected (no signals randomly occur in the same places that previously it was fine). Oh and once it randomly lost all my saved radio stations! They did add car play but it took a looooong time from when they said they would. It’s a reason NOT to buy the Volvo! The Kona could be a good replacement but the bing-bongs are an immediate no-no so while I enjoyed the video, I won’t be considering either car!
Great review. NOT a fan of the Tesla mono-screen where all the options are hidden... I like Volvo, but for me, I'd personally go with the Kona for the buttons, additional rear passenger room and the significantly larger boot space..
I was listening to the video and when someone said ‘Hey google, turn on….’ My phone said ‘OK. But you’ll have to connect to your car first!’ I really like to the look of the Volvo but.. it’s small. No way can it be a family car. Maybe a single person or no kids couple’s car! What I would really like is an EX40 on this ev platform rather than its current ICE chassis. So much more practical space. I think we make too much of the screen though. Thousands of Tesla drivers can’t be that wrong surely? I tried the voice controls in a non driving test and they really are very good.
The 2024/2025 new EX40 EC40 are much better in range and charging and have RWD (!) . I drove many EV (also Kona and Polestar 2), in EV FWD is really bad. Volvo are really good in winter and there have a heat pump.
EX30 all day long. Volvo looks way better, it’s a prestigious label, much better build quality. Drove the twin and it’s got super car beating performance. Agree a bit cramped in the rear but that’s the only negative for me!
Nicola -- THANK YOU for actually pronouncing Hyundai similarly to how it sounds, as opposed to how the condescending marketing team has told you to because they assume English speakers are idiots. Neither of you mention a heat pump. I think that's one of the major points you have to cover in any car -- 310 miles of range turns to 200 miles in the winter without one, though front and rear heated seats mollify that well. Frunks are direct indicators of front hoods which are too large and should be derided. The Kona has an excuse -- it's a gas car converted to EV. (I sure hope we see the end of those soon -- front wheel drive in an EV?) The HUD does not just look neat -- it makes the car much safer. I don't understand why that's not on every new car.
Hello Dai. Yes, Brits typically pronounce hyundai as the name Dai which has Welsh use as the short version of David or Dafydd and is in common use. So saying day for Dai isn't natural for us. Using a different pronunciation for car brands is common compared to their country of origin eg BMW and VW. Let's not make a big deal out of this.
Great joint review. I have a Hyundai and it is a bit grey, but all the materials are really hard wearing ..... and mechanically, brilliant. Very, very efficient.
For me the Kia Niro exterior styling with the Hyundai Kona interior would be the perfect car. My initial thought on the exterior style of the Kona is it is quite ugly but the look is growing on me. I was planning to get a Kia Niro but the interior design of the Kona is so good I would be willing to drive a car that looks like a hippo for that interior functional and spacious design :) It isn't just the buttons that are spot on for me but also the placement of everything. The center console area in the Kona isn't full of knobs, gear shifter and buttons but rather provides ample storage/drink area instead.
I will pick Nicola..... Hum, I mean to say that I pick whatever Nicola picks, but that Volvo is handsome... The Kona is cute in its own way, just like Nicola. I have driven the Kona N in Boston, and I absolutely loved it, so I think this Kona is perfectly fine, ....just like Nicola.
Beautiful Volvo. I tried it the other day and it looks to have nice finishings but it is lacking space inside and boot. I ended up getting a BYD Atto 3 which is 10.000$ cheaper and more spacious.
IMHO the biggest downside for EX30 is the range. 295 miles of WLTP mixed range (=200 miles highway range) isn’t great by today’s standards. In comparison the new ID.3 GTX has 372 miles of range. Volvo has worse drag coefficient too, meaning that the difference in highway range is even larger.
Unless I missed it why didn't you cover efficiency actually driving them? Comparing range specs and battery sizes is useless if one doesn't actually deliver what's advertised and the other does
I like Hippos, but prefer my Ioniq 5 Limited over them both. I do wish it had the Kona's cargo and frunk space, however. Nicola always has the clever video tricks! Makes my day!
This is one of the best fun comparison video's on the channel. At the end of the day it all boils down to the use case of the cars. Both have plusses and minuses as far as performance (Volvo) and practicality (Kona). Ultimately what are you going to use it for? To cover most bases for me I would have to agree the Kona would be the more likely option. But I'd decline both at the moment as I do not have the ability to fit a wall box where I live. Would I hire one? yes and the Kona would win again for its practicality. On todays British roads there are very few occasions that I could enjoy the acceleration of the Volvo but it would be fun to try although the tyres might wear a tad more. Top job girls and thanks for sharing.
The Hyundai Kona is just WAY more practical...the EX30 is basically a two seater. And having to dig into a menus to access key features is just impractical...and no HUD. ugh! I guess you could call the EX30 "minimalist". Again I'd choose the Kona over the EX30 any day. I'm jussayin....
I actually really like the EX30, just wish it had more buttons. But it being smaller is actually a + to me. Too many cars are aimed at people who should just be buying a mini-van to haul all their kids and gear around basically. Stuff like this should fully embrace actually being small and aimed at single people or couples with no kids. There's not many options for those people other than super super tiny cars like Fiat 500 or Smart 2-4 type cars.
@@VMYeahVN True....my feeling is that had they just added 4 inches to the platform it could have served a much broader audience. But I'm sure they have to rationalize where the EX30 fits into their overall product offering.
Great review ladies! Thank you. Now I am sure that they stripped the EX30 too much. I like the philosophy of making cheaper car by just not giving you too many thinks... because that costs, but now they have to make EX60 and that would be an interesting car. They try to save the environment by putting less materials into the car, but now you have to add another car to your EX30 for weekends and longer trips with your family and that reverts the effect, right?
The Kona platform is designed for electric first. And the bing bong well you can turn a lot of it off. I know as I live in Wales with our stupid 20mph. Mmmm
That's really not true, as it was designed as a gas model initially. The refresh was optimized for the EV version, however it's still not a dedicated EV platform like the GMP vehicles.
@@jamespaul2587 The first Kona electric was indeed built on an existing ICE platform as ICE version of the Kona preceded the electric version. In this second version the car was designed with the EV in mind first and adapted for the petrol versions. The Niro EV and Niro hybrids are also built on the same platform
The Volvo looks all about design and nothing about practicality. If looks are what matter to you, go with the Volvo. In all other cases, Kona is clearly the better choice. And that's coming from an XC40 driver...
Agree. We bought the EX30 for my wife, I have an older 911. Love the EX30! That thing (once software is updated and configured right) is hassle free and shoots like a bullet! It’s an amazing driving experience! Yes, it’s cramped in the back. Reality is, 99% of the time you don’t need the space nor the extra range. It’s calming and thrilling at the same time!
- Speeding 1km DING! - Looking sideways to check the road DING! - Farting with the windows closed DING! Hope this can be permanently switched off, or will earplugs come as a standard? I understand the need for safety, but exaggerating seems to be a form of art with modern car manufacturers.
WTF. When Nicola said, Ok google, turn on the heated seats, my phone launched a search on heated seats. Moving on, the EX 30 isn't available in Australia yet, hopefully we go straight to the MY25 which has some minor improvements, and more software updates to fix some irritations with charging etc.
If space and practicality is the issue then surely the new Scenic is an even better option? It also has a way nicer interior and avoids looking like any kind of hippo. Or moose come to think of it 🫎
The Renault Scenic is a much bigger car, more VW ID4, the EX30 is smaller than an ID3. Renault design and quality is right up there these days and the starting price for the Scenic is below both of the cars tested here.
The Scenic does look nice, but sadly it's not available yet, I can't find any dealer with one to test drive and they say they won't have them until September
Kona should have had a tidier design, with a central or side(winged) charge port… the offset one spoils the look! But it has a much more sensible and useful interior, and probably that bit better range and warranty? Size wise, the Kona for me also has the edge. Volvo is a tad on the small side (though neither could be described as big cars). So, here I’d go for the Hyundai. That said, if Volvo go on to make an EX60 I’d be very interested to assess that car.
I've never driven a Kona, so cannot compare these, however of all the EV's I've driven the EX30 was the worse, it's 'sibling' the Smart #1 is considerably better.
I'm sensing a bad pattern with the English review channels: They often overlook the importance of giving the exact model year of the models in question: For example The 2023 KONA was re-designed with a Sunroof and larger 10'' screen in the SEL Trim, so any comments left regarding earlier model years are less important to a viewer who is looking for exact review content relative to the exact model years which can vary greatly in there features and options.
Another great video but I have a nagging question, with some many functions built in the tablet how can this get around the law which stops me changing the satnav or answer my mobile as all of the above distract you from the road! Points on my licence for one but not for the more distractions from the tablet. Please help
voice control. I don't generally fiddle about changing things in my car anyway while driving (other than maybe turning heated seats or heating on and off) so when I tested the ex30 I was expecting to hate the single screen thing but to my surprise I loved it and it didn't feel dangerous.
It wasn't designed in China at all. It was designed in Sweden. And even the Geely provided platform was engineered by a Swedish engineer, Kent Ove Bovellan.
It's all very well reviewing New cars But what are they like on the used car market? That'll be interesting to see and how they fare their values their range.
The Volvo and the Hyundai Kona really need to have a baby! It would be a lot prettier than the Kona with a lighter, brighter, cleaner designed interior, bigger and more internally spacious than the Volvo also just having a sprinkling of buttons. Both slightly disappointing cars as they are in their own way.
I mostly agree, but me personally i don't relate to why people want the EX30 to be bigger. The whole point of compact crossovers/hatchbacks is for them to not be big bulbous family vans. The EX30 actually being properly normal/small sized as a big + to me personally. Great for a single person or a couple who don't have kids and might maybe need a small bit of cargo capacity but not always. But of course, the car market majority just caters to families, so i get it.
@@VMYeahVN well we’re the second demographic you mention (our children have grown up and left home). We have a Peugeot e-2008 which has got good rear leg room and is a lot smaller than our outgoing Jeep. Useful for when our daughters and their boyfriends visit. A slight stretch on that Volvo might help. Then again that would probably be an all new ground up EX40 to replace the current XC40 Recharge?
Rightly, the presenters recommend smaller wheels for performance (as do many reviewers for many cars). However, all the manufacturers' websites offer larger wheels for higher trims with no option to get the smaller wheels from the base trim. Why is this? Should the reviewer community pressure the manufacturers to offer this.
When we purchased our 2024 kona from nottm , the N line S ev, were were offered the smaller 17" wheels as a no cost option.my wife decided to keep the 19" wheels as they look better and range isn't an issue.
You can get smaller weels just do your order while at there store or call them and they will fix it for you.
Atleast Volvo does it just call them say you want the mode with longest range and then but small weels on them. I know Volvo and polestar in Sweden does it. Make a call to them
All good. We will see what happens when I need to order through a 100,000 car fleet operator at work :-)
Renault does it in the Scenic top spec, the configurator calls it max range pack or something like that.

Glad you're enjoying the new Kona! I've had it for 3 months and loving it!
+1 I vote for obligatory buttons for essential functions.
Erhm.. voice control...
Lovely. Looking forward to test drive the new 2024 Kona this weekend 🤩
Thank you for the range overview, that’s really good to know.
I'm not reading all of that
The Kona is still on an ICE platform, maybe they designed the sheet metal as an EV first but the underpinnings of the car are still underpinnings of an ICE car, which then got a battery and motors shoved into it in the case of the Kona electric.
Volvo is a chinese Company now LOL
Volvo EX30 is chinese car based on Geely, so I my choice would be Kona! :-) I would like to support "west" manufactures like Hyundai in my country Czechia, where Kona ev is producing... and the battery Kona is also from EU - LG chem Poland...
Volvo looks great. But I would take the Kona every day of the week.
Buttons, Knobs, HUD, more space, V2L and... some instruments behind the steering wheel.
Plus it's a second generation, I hope they learnd some things in the last generation kona and made it more reliable. I'm not a badge snob.
i wouldnt call it second gen, the charging speed is almost same as the old one same with the battery size. Its more of a facelift.
You totally Right!
I don't care about fast charging if the car is really efficient and the Kona is efficient!
I own a Kia e Niro 64 KWh and for the daily driving, I never need to use the fast charging.
It's the 3rd gen Kona, I think most of the changes over the years have been small.
@timscott3027
1 to 2nd is really a small change it's rather a facelift. 3rd, you say, that's another EV, big change!
and a place for four people, not two + two hamsters
Good comparison. EX30 has huge potential but terrible real world efficiency. 170-200 miles at best. Cramped rear. No buttons and numerous software glitches. Kona all round more solid, efficient and reliable.
That's quite something to say that a Hyundai is 'more solid' than a Volvo...but I would tend to agree having owned a Kia e-Niro from new for 5 years now. The cars coming out of the Hyundai Motor Group are just as well built as any German, Swedish or Japanese car I've owned in my 50 years of driving.
@@kiae-nirodiariesencore4270 But this sweed is a chinese ;)
@@doobieters1234 True.
I’m convinced it’s a safety risk having everything on a central screen
That's where the voice controls come into play, with google voice and the system is getting another update very soon OTA with Volvo already said things are changing with updates coming soon. Ultimately this is just the same as mobile phone manufacturers doing exactly the same for your mobile, so no issues there. Saves touching the screen, yes I agree at lower speeds it's slightly different if in busy traffic but very little traffic and motorway driving a different ball game. Also all the other tech available on both like lane keep assist, lane departure etc all helps.👍
YES! SCIENCE!!!!!! Make a hypothesis and TEST it.
What things are people trying to change while driving? For me, temperature is 19 degrees all the time so I never change that, headlights are automatic, wipers are automatic. If I'm using the satnav I put that in before I set off. I generally have the radio set to the same station but if Im using spotify I use siri to control it.
What Car? have a test just like that in their April 2024 issue.
Oh, milk is white or off-white/pink, because it secretes two kinds of unique acids.
The EX30 is bigger than a VW Golf. How did Volvo manage to get it so cramped in the back?
long nose
It's 6 cm (bit over 2 inches) shorter than a golf mk8.
@@wilsonwwy Do those centimeters make so much difference? And why call cars longer than 4 metres B-segment? The first C-segmenter, the VW Golf was 3,75m long or short.
@@doordedeurwe’re not in the 70s.
Thanks
So you mean they make it bigger in the next version? I thought car don't get bigger that soon for a new car with a new structure?
The steering is amazing. My daily is a 911 so I can fairly say that the driving experience and steering is utterly pleasant in the EX30. I don’t know what you were expecting. It is also possible that the steering sensitivity was set differently (you have 3 modes).
You can’t look at the Kona without throwing up, come on!
Nicky and Nichola are fast becoming my fav motoring journos ! These reviews are so much fun. Fantastic job!

Very funny test. Enjoy this greatly. Thanks for mentioning the turning circle. Most testers forget this important detail.👍
Wish they had compared the two. Only heard about the Kona’s.
@@StephenColes we've got the ex30 coming soon (motability, woo!) and the turning circle on it was very good. Currently drive a tiguan which has the worst turning circle ever, previous to that a Yeti which I loved and was great to park.
I like buttons. I am a tech nerd, but while driving, a button is just easy.
And delving into endless tiny icons on a screen away from your view of the road is downright an accident in waiting! Shame on you Volvo.
Madness extends to a car (forget which one) that you need to use the screen to open the glovebox.

The big let down with the Volvo is thelack of physical controls 😩
Agreed. Doing everything on a screen is patently unsafe.
It’s cost saving measures to narrow the gap with ICE vehicles but I’m not in favour of it.

I couldn't believe how cramped the back seats are in the Volvo.
this is indeed a car for two. and I have no idea how 95% of reviewers totally ignore that fact
I got in the backseat of the Volvo after adjusting the driving seat for my height. I was shocked and appalled at the lack of rear legroom!
Yes, plus the Kona has been beaten with numerous ugly sticks, that exterior is hideous 😊
Kona is for gay boys.
Volvo is for men.
EX30. Way better.
The Kona doesn't come in awd version for Canadian winters either.
@stevecade857 true, but in many regions, a good set of winter tires will be sufficient with the improved stability and traction that EVs have.
"And that is how babies are born" 😂🤣😂Oscar-worthy storytime.
Definitely not in the back of the V30...
A roof that opens is soooo useful for cargo possibilities: paddle board, small tree stand8ng up, long pieces of lumber etc. I dont care for panoramic roof. The kona can also st9re a spare tire, an actual one
In Canada, the base model EX30 is about $7k CAD more expensive than the Kona base model.
I've been driving my new Kona EV Ultimate and I love it! Really the enjoy the quiet fast take off.
I'd take the Kona any day, especially with its more ergonomical dashboard.
And more space, it's an upgrade compared to the older version!
Our EVs so far have been Nissan, Hyundai, Tesla and Hyundai again (Kona). Hyundai make the best cars for UK commuting and today's dreadful roads IMO
Nice review. I have to say I wasn’t shocked. Come to think of it, I don’t remember ever being shocked by a review on cars.
Kona EV platform
Actually, the Hyundai Kona does have its own EV platform because that’s how designed, and then they added in the hybrid and petrol technology.
Heated and ventilated seats
No matter what spec the EX30 is in the poor rear passenger space/legroom is a deal breaker.
Nicola and Nicki is always a joy. You can feel that they enjoy making these videos.
I agree with Nicola; three buttons on a big slippery screen while driving in bad weather seems at odds with Volvo’s reputation for safety…
when i am driving, whenever i mess around with the 'one screen for all', say to turn on the heated seat, my wife just panics and thinks we are going to crash; so i ask her to mess around with the screen for me but she won't look away from road in case we crash; therefore no changes can be made via the screen 🤔; i am not sure if this says more about my driving, the cars controls or the her fear of crashing...
Volvo warranty is only three years. 22kW changing is standard on the ultra not optional
Good comparison. Tbh, I have no idea why the EX30 was hyped up so much. It's an average vehicle.
Love the EX30 just wish it had the driver side display, I can't stand the speed displaying on the center console.
I thought i was going ot hate it but the test drive was fantastic, didn't bother me at all! (i also tested ev6, audi q4 and enyaq on the same day).
But why would you want to do anything associated with Elon Musk
@@btnbiker Why would anyone want a Chinese owned and made car like a Volvo? Same point you’re making on Tesla - people prejudices mean some won’t buy them. Vast majority don’t care they’ll just want the best car.
Who in UK wants a saloon in last 50 years?
Great video, thanks.
the charging port location on the Kona is a deal breaker, regardless of anything else
Nicola's argument about buttons and knobs rings true with me. It just makes sense. Add also that the Kona has more options really ends the competition. As much as I like Volvo.....cramped back seats and an ipad standing up in the way, on the dash, just isn't my cup of tea.
Big let down is the 2024 Hyundai Kona is only 4☆ safety rated. What is the Volvo?
But you’ll have to connect to your car first!’
I really like to the look of the Volvo but..
Thousands of fart obsessed Yanks can't be wrong - have you seen who they vote for?

EX30 all day long. Volvo looks way better, it’s a prestigious label, much better build quality. Drove the twin and it’s got super car beating performance. Agree a bit cramped in the rear but that’s the only negative for me!
A bit cramped, you must be blind!
I think heat pumps are standard in the Kona.
Buttons are important for safty. Screens bad buttons good.
Apparently there has been an update recently to silence the bongs for each trip.
I reserved an EX30 here in the states, but the lack of V2L is making me reconsider.
V to G is the deciding factor for me. Why spend at least $40,000 on house batteries when you can buy them in your car.
Unless I missed it why didn't you cover efficiency actually driving them?
Comparing range specs and battery sizes is useless if one doesn't actually deliver what's advertised and the other does
Plus what is the insurance, servicing and value after 3 years?
I like Hippos, but prefer my Ioniq 5 Limited over them both. I do wish it had the Kona's cargo and frunk space, however. Nicola always has the clever video tricks! Makes my day!
Ioniq is for gay men so offcourse you happy with it.
Doesnt the Kona still fast-charge pretty slow?
Plus no heat pump or opening roof!
The KONA is built on its own EV platform and then adjusted for ICE versions
Wrong. Platform itself has based on ICE. Only the exterior was designed first followed by ICE.
Kona is trash
No it’s not. It is built on an ICE platform
@@TheSgtsMess agreed, however the refresh was optimized for the EV version
@@jamespaul2587 The first Kona electric was indeed built on an existing ICE platform as ICE version of the Kona preceded the electric version. In this second version the car was designed with the EV in mind first and adapted for the petrol versions. The Niro EV and Niro hybrids are also built on the same platform
Great episode and well presented! I enjoyed that positive video experience after a proper rats day! Thank you!
The Kona takes a spare wheel too which is a big bonus.
I've never driven a Kona, so cannot compare these, however of all the EV's I've driven the EX30 was the worse, it's 'sibling' the Smart #1 is considerably better.
I need a screen in front of me, I also like a few buttons! I love Volvos but it is lacking a little bit. When will we see a new model xc40?
I'm sensing a bad pattern with the English review channels: They often overlook the importance of giving the exact model year of the models in question:
For example The 2023 KONA was re-designed with a Sunroof and larger 10'' screen in the SEL Trim, so any comments left regarding earlier model years
are less important to a viewer who is looking for exact review content relative to the exact model years which can vary greatly in there features and options.
The Volvo's speckled interior reminds me of public toilets.
Exactly what I was thinking.
Dodgy eco disaster frying pans!
It's a bit of a lie to say the EX30 was fully designed in China. The Volvo headquarter and product development is located in Gothenburg, Sweden.
It wasn't designed in China at all. It was designed in Sweden. And even the Geely provided platform was engineered by a Swedish engineer, Kent Ove Bovellan.
That was a LOT of details (Great) but WONDERFUL story and VERY entertaining. MORE REVIEWS! I love them!
Why is the volvo's inside so small though. It's equally big outside. Like would it kill them to add 2 inches more of leg room
I'm against having a gigantic screen, but it's too early to have it before the car drives fully automatically itself.
