    I’m currently rebuilding my ‘99 7.3. It had 369,000 when I pulled it, could have gone a lot longer as I thought it was a head gasket going out, but was only an injector cup in number 3 cylinder. Nonetheless it was a great time to pump it up to 450 HP with upgraded parts. This is my first diesel build and you saved my cookies on this video. I did not remove the plugs under the timing gear, but I guess the machine shop do and did not replace them. I had the motor put together and had to unbuild it again to check that. Sure enough they were missing. Your video was a God send and truly believe God lead me to your video. Thanks so much! And God Bless.

      Glad It was a help. That's what I was after. Many sights don't cover the little things that can be devastating if not done. You would have had a no start engine with the galleys open.

      Thanks for the kind words. The 7.3 is a great platform to build power from.

    Every time I watch a video about my 7.3 I have to add another part I'm gonna replace 😂...I'm not going to rebuild the engine but I'm gonna replace everything around it..it has 325,000 miles..but then again I haven't taken it out yet to see how it looks inside.

      About the only thing that can bring these engines down is a severe overheat or something breaking. If you are worried about the condition of yours, I'd start with a compression check and go from there. My 96 daily driver has 355k and the compression is still around 385 to 390 on every cylinder. It has lots of life left in it. That being said, I'll probably pull the engine to reseal everything including the welded in dipstick adapter when this one is completed. While in there, of course I'll check all the bearings and clearances just to see if anything needs addressed.

    I a used Gates water pump on my 2000 7.3 & it lasted 3 weeks. Put a new one on & it lasted 6 months. Went OEM & it's been fine for about 5 years now.

      Interesting. I guess we'll find out. Many times in sand cast blocks trapped sand will let loose all at once. Are you running a coolant filter?

    • @bbrown9763
      @bbrown9763 2 ปีที่แล้ว

      @@phil-from-tn3000 No. had the original pump to ~250 k miles. Then the two gates, now have 335k. I’ve done several coolant changes over the years, most recent about a week ago when I replaced the oil cooler o-rings & the coolant has always been mostly clean. Like, less than 1/8 tsp of solid particulate in the drain bucket after draining the radiator. Anyway, the Gates experience was the straw that broke my back where aftermarket is concerned. I now stay OEM unless it isn’t an option or it’s a feature I just have to have. Aftermarket, in most cases, just doesn’t measure up. I was really disappointed bc I too have had great luck w/Gates products, but not here.

      You're welcome. That is exactly why I posted them. This series should get anyone that wants to from a broken engine to a great running machine.

    Thank you for detailed information. I am working on my 7.3 excursions. Where did you get the gasket for front cover?

    • @phil-from-tn3000
      @phil-from-tn3000  หลายเดือนก่อน

      I actually ordered a complete set of Mahle gaskets from Rock auto. They had the best price, and Mahle is an oem supplier on some of the gaskets.

    Hey Phil, on a factory LPOP what side does the “Damper” stamped gears go on? I don’t want to put it back in the truck the wrong way

    • @phil-from-tn3000
      @phil-from-tn3000  หลายเดือนก่อน

      I would put a Melling M208 pump in it. The impellers are redesigned and its a much better pump than the original. It also doesn't matter which way the gerotors are installed in the Melling. For the OE pump the outer gerotor is stamped either "Out" or "Damper", The worded side faces away from the engine.

    Thanks for the thorough step by step information 👍.... did you make a video on valve spring & push rod installation? Wanted to know how to adjust the valve spring height & seat pressure if that's what it's called.

    • @phil-from-tn3000
      @phil-from-tn3000  ปีที่แล้ว +1

      Yes I did. the valve spring height adjustment/seat pressure is covered in the Cylinder head work Part 2

    Great video, thank you for creating. I am curious as to which digital torque wrench you were using??

    • @phil-from-tn3000
      @phil-from-tn3000  3 ปีที่แล้ว +1

      I am using one of the new Quinn wrenches from HF. I had it checked before I started this project and it was dead on. Good enough for me.

    What type of sealant or loctite did you use on the npt plugs for the lifter galleys behind the cam gear? Or any of the pipe plugs on the block for that matter? I am in final assembly of my 7.3 build and wasn't sure what to use here so I used gasoila.

    • @phil-from-tn3000
      @phil-from-tn3000  2 ปีที่แล้ว

      I used Permatex number 2. You'll see it in a bunch of different videos as I used for the core plugs as well.

    You don’t happen to know where you can purchase the drain back valve towards the end of your video?

      I believe that's going to be a dealer part or maybe ebay

    I suggest you go to DieselSite.com and get a 203* thermostat, if you havent already.

    • @phil-from-tn3000
      @phil-from-tn3000  3 ปีที่แล้ว +3

      I have mixed feelings about the 203 thermostat. Seems there is opinions on both sides. I'll get her installed and see how she performs.
