That heavier cab must be killing your mpg! I have a 2007 access cab 4x4 base, been my daily driver for three years, also 4.0 6MT. I get about 18-20 mpg. I agree about getting the options you want, I have manual everything, no sliding rear window, no foglights, but they are plug and play on these, all prewired. Only complaint is the clutch is getting weak but that's pretty standard and I still can daily drive it. Eventually I'll add some options and a small suspension lift, meatier tires, and bedline paint the thing.
Man $12,800 is a good price, I found my 2011 6speed manual TRD off road 4x4 access cab for $18,400 private party. My truck only had 47k miles on it when I bought it but they certainly hold their value. I like the 6 speed. The clutch does catch kinda high for my liking, I wish it was a bit lower on the pedal. The shifter throw was a bit long too,I’d hit my knee in reverse but after I put the URD short throw shifter on it makes the shifting experience feel more crisp and no longer hits my knee. It did make it require a lot of muscle to get into reverse though, but it’s a good thing. Prevents you from accidentally going to reverse when aiming for 1st
Same here... Just bought a 2011 with only 77k miles for 18,500 . Think they are a bit over priced, got a 6 inch lift kit. Every once in a while get a better deal. Under 15k in good condition. But hard to find.
I just towed a 5000 + Lbs Trailer to Arizona from the bay area in California i have the 2013 Off Road auto trans. and its better then any manual i have ever had,, i had no problem at all it is a very strong truck, its rated for 6500 Lbs,, it was amazing how well it drove and pulled that Trailer through California and the Tehachapi mountains in to Arizona,, Not sure why some of you guys thank the manual Tran's can stand up to a automatic transmission in the Tacoma's,, No wonder your having trouble pulling your boat,, its not the motor its you transmission,, Not sure what your truck is rated for since its a SR5..
It’s been a while since you made this video, just curious, how has the truck held up for you? I’m close to pulling the trigger on a gen 2 Tacoma. Yeah I know they freaking cost a bunch of money for High mileage, but in my research, they are worth it. Enjoyed your review!
Hey, friend! I'm so sorry for never getting back to you :( honestly, it was a great truck while I had it and never gave me ANY issues! Unfortunately, mine had a little bit more rust than I was comfortable with so I had to let her go. In my experience other than all the obvious stuff that you're probably well versed in, I would watch out for the rust :) I hope you got your dream truck! Thank you for watching!
15k for that truck. Hopefully i find a deal like all you guys here. Here in kansas cheapest ones are like 2006 with 150k+ miles for that kind of money. It sucks. I which I can find a 2010 around 20k low miles.
I believe the best thing you can do for these trucks is upgrade the rear leaf springs or get some helper spring/air springs. The payload is severely lacking and if you're towing and have weight in the bed forgot about it.
@@BurningRubberDC there was slight frame rust but nothing major and small front left collision it was a rebuilt tittle but holy shit its clean its at 124k right now but she is very clean on the inside and out.
Lol about towing… I remember towing 4900LBS with my dads 2002 Tacoma V6, max tow 5K… I remember 5500RPMS in 2nd gear because the trans wouldn’t downshift LOL. It was from detroit Mi all the way to Mackinac bridge. 4 or 5 gas stops never again did we tow with that 😂
These trucks are definitely not tow horses, that’s for sure. Tow rating is 5k, I wouldn’t want to tow any more than 3500 for an extended period of time. Small landscaping stuff, four wheeler, motorcycle, all fine. Side by side, 12 foot trailer, extra tools and equipment, 2 or 3 passengers and you really start pushing the thing.
@@uno3863 I did not, he never mentioned that the rockers were rusted all the way through. I found a rust free 05 for less money with less miles and I love it.
I have a 2017 V6 2 wheel drive. I get 25-27 mpg on the freeway and 20-23 in the city right now that there hasn't been that much traffic since the covid began. I'm still trying to get used to the seating position. It's definitely different from any other car I've driven.
Do you have the 3.5 V6? I know those get better fuel economy than the 4.0. 2wd helps with fuel economy a lot. Mine is a fully loaded crew cab 4x4 which gets the worst fuel economy out of any trim level. The 6 speed manual is geared lower than the automatic so it turns more rpm on the highway and gets worse fuel economy that way. Although, I love that because you always have passing power, you never have to downshift, and it tows like a dream.
@@ceaser4106 I came from a 2014 Ram 1500 with the Hemi (400ish hp) with 8 speed transmission. The 4.0 V6 is nothing like that but I think for what it is, it is a stout engine especially when paired with the 6 speed manual. I've heard the 3.5 doesn't have as much grunt as the 4.0.
I have the stock 4.0 V6, TRD Off Road, 265/70/16 Yokohama street tires, and 6 speed manual. It varies but after doing more testing I’ll get about 17mpg mixed driving. 16city and 20highway (unloaded).
Nice truck! How many miles does it have and how much did you get it for? Those things aren’t cheap. Edit- guess I should of watched the whole video 😂 man 12800 isn’t bad for that! That’s actually not a bad deal especially it being manual. Toyota’s hold their value so well. Where did you get it Craigslist?
Usually I’m a huge Craigslist guy. However, I actually found it on CarGurus. It was located at a small private used car dealership in Knoxville. I checked it out, test drove it, and talked them down from 13900 to 12800. I’ve never bought from a dealer before so I had to pay taxes on the purchase which sucked. But, it is a great truck so I really can’t complain.
i have an 02 double cab 2wd and man it’s so great i love the size but the tech and the parts are getting a little old and not as good. hoping to get a 2nd gen 4wd
It sure does! Coming from the 5.7 Hemi I am not disappointed. The 4.0 makes great torque down low and the variable valve timing makes good power up high. Combine that with the 6 speed and you really have a solid setup.
That sounds about right. It’s important to consider the cab configuration, options, engine, transmission, 4 wheel drive, bed size, tires, and lift. All of that plays a part in fuel economy. After doing more testing, I get about 16 mpg mixed and 19 on the highway.
For anyone who is wondering it looks like the automatic and manual average about the same MPG for this vehicle. Although if you're really tame I bet you can get 2mpg more out of the manual because you can decide to be efficient more directly. Kind of curious how it would tow with a tuned 1jz or 2jz in it instead. If I was going to get a new truck I'd get one of these but thinking of selling my 75 GMC shortbed 350 for a 68-72 gmc or chev longbed.
Worth every penny in my opinion. Toyota’s are more expensive to buy in the used market but, if they don’t give you much trouble then I think it’s worth it.

After doing more testing, I get on average 17mpg unloaded city and about 21 unloaded highway.
