Fantastic videos but you're confusing the audience you want to educate!
One little known thing about the Tacomas is that at the beginning of Operation Enduring Freedom in Afghanistan 2002, the U.S. Special Operation Forces purchase a lot of these trucks from U.S. dealers, modify them and them ship them to the Area of Operations (AO). There were many reasons for that. 1. The Humvees 6.5L diesel engine is very noisy and is inefficient, compare to a gasoline one. 2. Both Northern Alliance and the Taliban forces used Toyota Hilux trucks and they were somehow similar to the Tacomas (at least in shape) and they are more under the radar than a Humvee or any other U.S. Military Vehicle. Perfect for cover U.S. Special Operations in the area. 3. In case such vehicle was destroyed in combat operations or forced to abandon it was easy to replace. Leonardo Andres Garcia Pedraza I used to work on a national guard base in VA and the special forces guys had a bunch of Hulixs the were able to have them in the US under government plates
@Gabe Well, an American truck is very rare outside North America specially in Afghanistan. Remember that US SOF missions need to draw as little attention as possible and the Tacomas were perfect for that role. Using American truck would ruin their missions.
The Toyota Hilux trucks we had overseas were absolutely INDESTRUCTIBLE. Along with cockroaches, I'm pretty the Toyota Hilux could withstand a nuclear detonation.
the older ones could have you seen the topgear segment on the dam thing they set it on fire drowned the dam thing and most of all set it on top of a building that got demoed it still ran
Yes, they did the same exact thing multiple times in the 4runner video. I commented and pointed it out there, but got down voted lol. Personally I think it ruins the credibility of the videos and makes me want to stop watching, seems like more effort went into the jokes and animation segments than actually making sure their facts are straight and line up with "their" footage.
I'm from Tacoma, Washington and I remember in 1995 when the news announced that Toyota was going to call their next truck "Tacoma." My family just looked at each other and asked, "Why? Have they not been here?"
@@abet5303 While there are a million beautiful and lovely areas around Tacoma, the city itself is an uninteresting, kinda dirty, working-class dock town. For the record, I have a Tacoma and I love it.

Oh, come on, we all fell in love with the 1985 Toyota SR5 in Back to the Future. One of the best looking Toyota Trucks. Heck, it was probably the best looking small truck of that day.
Actually, the Tacoma was a totally new model apart from the previous pickup. The model that was known as "Toyota Pickup" later became the Toyota Hilux and continued to be sold in other markets. For North America, it was discontinued and a new vehicle was developed and sold: Toyota Tacoma. The Hilux (previous pickup) is still being sold in many parts of the world today.
Was the hilux then later because just toyota truck in the US. Everywhere else, it is still branded as a hilux. But yeah like mentioned above, the Tacoma is totally different than the hilux. Theres no demand for the hilux here in the states because we have full size half ton trucks as compared to other countries where our midsized trucks would be their fill sized trucks. Hell its like we get the Nissan Frontier yet everyone else gets a slightly larger and definitely tougher Nissan Navara or Patrol Safari.
@@neomeg2232 Yeah, because America is the only place that uses LHD🙄. It is different. I'm sure they share some things, but they are different, different engines, exterior, even the chassis codes differ. Do a little research.

the tundra (hilux where i'm from) is by far the toughest car made in my opinion. topgear demolished a multi-story building on one. and it still started. i've seen people hydrolock their motors and get 'em running again just by dragging it outta the water and turning it over until it starts. my personal car is a 4x4 diesel hilux and i've taken it places no car should go. it'll conquer anything. i drive it like i stole it and it gives me nothing but gratitude in return. at well over 450,000 km's and no rebuild it shouldn't run at all. when i worked for toyota i'd regularly see these things approach 750,000kms no issues. hands down the best ute ever made IMO
They have different front ends. The grille looks different on the tundra from my hilux. The cab and tray look to be identical. Same with the driveline. Not sure if the diesel was something they had worldwide but mines got a 3l diesel 4 banger

Cameron Wallace best gen is ?
I have a 91. Not a hilux or a Tacoma so what's that
Its Zendro Toyota pickup here in the states
My dad's taco lasted 300k miles even with how much he completely disregarded scheduled maintenance. He eventually scrapped it. I think he spent 1.5k total on maintenance over 20 years. Unreal to me. So I found a 2011 with 15,000 miles on it, jumped on it, and it's the best thing ever. They're so easy to work on. I love my goddamn Tacoma.
Your pictures are out of sync, you show a facelifted 1st gen and talk about it as a 2nd gen, then you show a 2nd gen and refer it as a 3rd gen
Rev glad I’m not the only one that caught that. I was starting to question that the 1GRFE was available in 1st gen double cabs. Of course, it wasn’t.
Fun fact, the 1st gen double cab was also never available in a manual. Otherwise I’d have had one.
Ya i was about to say, ive worked at toyota and Lexus for 10 years and i have never seen a 1gr in a 2nd gen taco. Thou im sure someone out there has swapped one into a 2nd gen like i did for my pickup.
noticed it too. I'm sure there illustrators/editors are kicking themselves now
@Donut Media for timestamps, 7:40 you refer to the face lifted 1st gen tacoma as "a new taco" but it's not a 2nd gen. You show the X-runner which was on the 2nd gen platform and proper to what you were trying to say.
Then at 9:35 you show the 2nd gen and claim its the 3rd gen. You only show the 3rd gen tacoma at 10:14
I notice you guys did this with the everything you need to know about 4runners and pickups as well, c'mon guys!

Its coolwhen the military uses civilian cars, like the 1st gen silverados

Still got my '98 Taco, it was my first car, and it's been with me all the way to hell and back it's now got 375,427 miles, and it ain't slowing down.
This episodes ilustrations are pretty messed up. As James talks about the next generation, the video continues to highlight the previous one.
Not only that, but later on in the video they do the exact opposite, they showcase the 3rd gen Tacoma while still talking about the 2nd gen
Yeah, the generations are off each time
They got it all messed up.
Did bug me a bit...
Sorry I didn't get it? Plz explain
@@abet5303 While there are a million beautiful and lovely areas around Tacoma, the city itself is an uninteresting, kinda dirty, working-class dock town.
The Hilux is the name they use for the Tacoma in foreign markets. Like every car it goes through generations. Still the same car though
@@neomeg2232 The Tacoma is totally different to the Hilux
Was the hilux then later because just toyota truck in the US. Everywhere else, it is still branded as a hilux. But yeah like mentioned above, the Tacoma is totally different than the hilux. the tundra (hilux where i'm from) is by far the toughest car made in my opinion. topgear demolished a multi-story building on one. and it still started. i've seen people hydrolock their motors and get 'em running again just by dragging it outta the water and turning it over until it starts. my personal car is a 4x4 diesel hilux and i've taken it places no car should go. it'll conquer anything. i drive it like i stole it and it gives me nothing but gratitude in return. at well over 450,000 km's and no rebuild it shouldn't run at all. when i worked for toyota i'd regularly see these things approach 750,000kms no issues. hands down the best ute ever made IMO
