In addition to the much appreciated clear explanation of the jhanas, thank you for the analogy about the kids playing on the sidewalk. I've always been the person who "looks out" and pays attention to such things, and have had the "worry wart" label etc. Of course, part of this maybe is related to long-term issues with anxiety (it feels like its more underlying than that though). But I also find in my practices that I can focus and concentrate of the object or attention quite well, not every sitting but most, and even bliss at times. I've been blessed with great teachers and mentors (present company included) but it never really occurred to me that something like over-worry or hyper-focus - with its "negative" aspects when it turns into rumination and fear etc. - has been perhaps a helpful quality when it comes to my practice. Kind of an A-ha moment for me (which are always nice). Talk about a double-edges sword :lol

Once I heard Ajahn Brahm saying that "kindness is the glue between you and the object of your attention". For me it was a game changer in my practice. I think that this is related to your wonderful explanation about how the Dopamine works. Thank you 🙏

You are amazing for making videos like these. Is there any way we can tip you for making them?

You seem incredibly knowledgeable in all of this You've written many books
when you first started out practicing meditation how difficult was it for you
I asked because it's highly difficult for me I have a really hard time keeping my concentration it seems like at all times and I'm wondering if some of that has to do with social media being on the phone gaming things that constantly need your attention I also have ADHD
Ultimately I want to learn how to calm my mind though be able to see my thoughts without attaching to them and feel my emotions without attaching to those should you respond Thank you
This was a very good video

Mike, I'm glad you are interested in meditation. You're right, the mind naturally tends to jump around, plus technology like gaming and smartphones trains it to REALLY want to jump around. And if a person is more distractible and stimulation-seeking by nature - which is perfectly natural, and really helped our ancestors to have people like you in their tribe! - then it's even harder to settle down and concentrate. The good news is that if you stick with it, you can feel calmer and more centered. I suggest starting with one minute. You could start the timer on your phone, breathe naturally, and count how many breaths it takes to get to one minute. Just this will make you more self-aware, especially if you do it every day. It's just one minute - but you'll feel a difference. And then try two minutes, and build from there. Also try staying aware of your breathing while walking in a relaxed way, for a minute or more. It's OK if thoughts bounce around in awareness, try to step back from them, like watching a movie *while knowing you are watching it." It could also help to deliberately relax your body while you breathe. And also bring in positive emotions like gratitude or friendliness or love; they will help to calm your mind as well. Stick with it! This will help you - plus you will learn good things that you can use to help others as well!

      @@RickHanson Hi Rick ,
I just wanted to thank you wholeheartedly for taking the time to respond to my message and to give me such a good description and explanation so thorough
That was really helpful Yeah I have heard before people with like ADHD distract people people were actually useful and tribes hunter-gatherers back in the day cuz they could notice things that could be a threat for the group
I also really appreciate the one minute meditation I'm definitely going to start doing that I'll start with one minute count my breasts like you said and really take the time to just feel my breathing let the thoughts float by watch them like a movie and just keep working on it
You're a phenomenal writer a great speaker I've also listened to your TED talk before It's very informative
And I really appreciate you taking the time to respond to me again Thank you have a great night and you definitely helped me out so I look forward to taking some of this and helping others!
      Mike

Oops! That is my friend Tom Brown, who helps me with the technical aspects of this Zoom recording. I don't know how it happened that the camera switched to him for a moment - and I'm sorry about that. We'll edit that part out, and try to prevent it in the future.
