Why a Superman Game is so Hard to Make

  • It had long been suspected and rumored that WB games was working on a Superman video game. The game never came out and fans assumed that it was either just made up rumors or pure speculation, until recently. Recently, it was leaked that WB had been working on a Superman game of some kind since 2013, but that game never came to fruition. Today, we wanted to take a look at why Superman games are so hard to make, even though the Batman Arkham games like Batman Arkham Origins, Arkham Knight, Arkham Asylum and Arkham City were so successful. #SupermanGame #WBGamesMontreal #BatmanArkham

These problems assume a Superman game has to take place entirely on Earth. Make it a space travel game. Have him go to Apokolips and fight Darkseid, Kalibak, others, and parademons. Have him go to Warworld and take on Mongul and other supergladiator type enemies. Have him go to the negative zone and fight Zod and other enemies in there. Have him go to an alien planet and fight Brainiac. Puzzles with Mr Mixyzptlk. There are plenty of options to keep Superman powered and give plenty of options
This only solves premise and threats though. It doesn't solve gameplay problems.

      This is very true.
I'd say my dream Superman game is very ambitious idea. I would honestly like for there to be a main Metropolis map, a Fortress of Solitude home base area, as well as a story that takes you into space and on to other planets for missions (not entire planets of course but world space instances. I guess this game's "dungeons"). But like I said that's super ambitious and I don't realistically see us getting something like that soon.
But yeah you would definitely have to be fighting powerful enemies for combat and if they do bring in the less powerful ones it will have to be delicate situations that you might have to solve with fact thinking and perhaps with puzzle elements.

These days we get space games, beyond good and evil 2 where we can go to space.Maybe this maybe a thing in ps5 or ps6 (unlikely) consoles. If they make this I guess Dragonball games would be heavily inspired to improve flight boundaries. These days Batman Arkham and Darksouls games are a major inspiration for modern games. I bet superman will be an inspiration to other games

Which leads to Man of Steel's problem with Zod overcoming the Earth atmosphere illness he had for... What, 5 minutes? Clark had asthma and fought to breath earth air for a LONG time, according to Martha.

    Just my thoughts :
Make it so that Superman is starting his career, and is still learning the way to do things, then you can have dialogue and choices that impact metropolis and Superman's friends in the long term, ( for this the writers have to make us care about said characters).
As for the combat, normal thugs should be of no harm to superman, but to metropolis, making it so that the priority isn't to defeat these criminals, but to save the people they threaten, and if you don't, metropolis will deteriorate.
Lex Luthor's thugs should have kryptonite bullets making it so you have to dodge them, then disarm them, or just punch them and deal with the story consequences.
Then you can use the more powerful villains to let Superman use his full power, be it in metropolis (where you'd have to worry about defeating said villain without destroying the city), or in space, where shit gets real.
All of these choices would culminate in the final state of metropolis and public approval of Superman, making for different consequences throughout the game (more criminals, with more resources, and characters start to dislike you), and different endings. It would also allow different playstyles.
Superman should unlock more powers as he levels up, and you shouldn't be allowed to destroy metropolis simply for the sake of making the game work.
TL;DR : You try to be Superman, if you do it right something happens, if you don't something else happens.
Just my thoughts, if you have anything to add or want to point something out, be my guest.

This is how I thought to do it as well. I was thinking about making it to where if you engage with street level criminals, you have to defeat them gently/indirectly or you'll kill them and ruin public perception of you. I was also thinking about Lex Luthor minions appear sporadically with the Kryptonite like elite mooks so that way it doesn't feel like there's suddenly a factory producing kryptonite bullets and weapons for everyone. I would want a couple of instances of Mr. Mxyzptlk appearing just to screw with Superman, Lobo, Bizarro, and then cap it off with Darkseid or Braniac. Maybe have him do a forced team up with Lex. Just to get a bit of his "rogue's gallery" showcased. And like you said, do these boss fights without causing damage to the city. Other than that, not really different than what you were suggesting.

I really don't think the 'he's too OP' argument is valid anymore. Look at Kratos and his new game. We knew Kratos was going to destroy the Norze mythological gods because he destroyed the Greek ones and yet we loved the game all the same! The main thing that people forget is that "people with guns" aren't the only villains for characters. Like with Kratos, use people who challenge the majn character. Darkseid, Apokolips, Kalibak, Mr. M. Go to other planets, make the justice league fight against him or something!

@Conrad Kujur well I was in reply to his comparison to GOW
And no offense but those game don't hold a candle to GOW
I guess if you want to make a Superman game like the DBZ games that are more fighting mashing game type esc that try to be adventure then sure, but those games are pretty bad imo(except DBFZ or old Tenkaichi games but those are more towards fighting/anime games)
If they want to go for GOTY superman that rivals Spiderman or Batman and is more action adventure, then that would be more difficult for Superman

    • @minorears5205
      @minorears5205 4 ปีที่แล้ว +17

People would only want to fly to other planets as much as they want Spiderman to go to other cities - so use a barrier like every game. A key feature of the game, to make him go to other planets would be the Watchtower. Easy.
YFN, just because Superman is tied to media doesn't make him any different to another character like Spiderman. Spiderman has his own lore, yet they didn't follow it in his game did they? Batman has his own lore yet they make games wirh Batman time and time again. Lore isn't a problem.
Bruce, the combat system is not a problem. Numerous games have their own combat systems. That's like saying Spiderman would be more difficult because he doesn't use swords. They both punch. It'd be the same as Goku, Batman + Marvel games.
As I've shown, Superman is entirely possible to make, it'd just require a willingness to do so and a clear goal whilst doing so. The reason we think it isn't possible is because nobody has really gave it a good shot.

New York and Arkham city have a lot of depth for a reason and those aren't that easy, yet you want planets...

To tie into the “city heath” feature give him full access to his powers and make the world fully destructible. Have a populated city where bystanders can be hurt or killed if Superman doesn’t control himself or isn’t aware of his surroundings. The more damage he causes or allows the more the populace turns against him. He really cares how people see him after all. When the super villains show up it’ll add extra challenge and dimensions to combat. Imagine slugging it out with Lobo and trying to not destroy the city.

Possible solution to Superman being OP: You know how he holds back and pulls his punches depending on the person he is fighting? Like for doomsday or Zod he goes all out but for stopping the average mugger he pulls back a LOT of his punches, turn that into a game mechanic that changes how difficult it is to beat a character without killing them.

    • @ChefofWar33
      @ChefofWar33 4 ปีที่แล้ว +10

That should be a player choice in my opinion. Otherwise it would make the player really frustrated. I think it would be awesome if they had a morality meter just like Infamous. Superman can easily snap a man in half. But resisting the urge to do that because it would be the easier option would make for a great gameplay mechanic. It would make the player restrain his power but actually have the choice to give in and take the easy way out.

  • @Britton_Thompson
    @Britton_Thompson 4 ปีที่แล้ว +236

No, It's not difficult. It just requires creativity.
    For example....
*▪Don't reduce his power; replicate his responsibility of controlling his superpowers so that he doesn't overdo it.* If you pour it on too much, you create collateral damage in the environment through the reckless use of your superpowers
*▪Game play should be based in having to hone his powers by hitting a 'sweet spot'.* Superman's perpetual challenge is to use Kryptonian superpowers to save the world when they could just as easily be used to break it. Simulate this challenge that he's always had to navigate in the comics
*▪Put a timer/destruction meter on each task.* Superman's job isn't to just beat up the bad guys. It's to save lives and property. Stop the redundant NPC enemies you have to wade through in level play before too much damage is done, otherwise Superman's not really saving the day now is he?
*•Remove these barriers in the boss fights.* Crank it up and cut loose with his powers when fighting supervillains in the boss fights
*▪Explore all 3 aspects of him -- Superman (hero); Clark Kent (investigative reporter); Kal El of Krypton (alien).* Have levels that require him to sneak around and uncover evidence as Clark Kent, the investigative reporter; levels where he can't use his superpowers. This incorporates the same fun of Batman and Spiderman games by using Clark as the detective
*▪Use corresponding villains for his three identities.* The Kal El/alien missions should see him facing General Zod, Brainiac, and Doomsday. Superman/hero gets Darkseid, Mongul, Bizarro, Cyborg Superman, Metallo, etc. The Clark Kent/investigator missions should put him on the trail of uncovering Lex Luthor
*▪Take him everywhere he has connections.* Don't just keep him in Metropolis the whole time. Take him to Smallville, the Fortress of Solitude, the Hall of Justice, even to outer space (to assist the Green Lantern Corps on a galactic mission or two!)
*▪Increase XP with heroic last second rescues that amazes everyone.* Get bonuses whenever you stop bullets, bombs, and trainwrecks at the last possible moment. Ya know, like a superhero!
*▪Use Superman to inspire hope.* That's why he's here in the first place, is it not? Make gameplay affect public opinion of you in Metropolis, and have the choices you make when stopping other supervillains earlier in the story determine the ending. If Superman has to always make the correct decisions every time, so should you
*▪Lex Luthor should be responsible for the most wretched things imaginable, but will get away with it no matter what.* Superman should personally know all the top secret science projects & classified military operations Lex is involved in, but Superman can never gain the indisputable evidence he'll need that'll stand up in court to legally bring down Lex. Have the people of Metropolis continue blindly adoring Lex as a genius & philanthropist. Since the point of Superman is to inspire hope, the point of Lex Luthor is to frustrate Superman so much that even he starts to question if it's hopeless in a world where men like Lex Luthor can rig the system and get away with their crimes
*▪The overall experience should not only be fun, but to emphasize the immense responsibility Superman has.* Storytelling in gaming has advanced enough by now that gamers could handle such a meta message. Who says a video game can't also have artistic merit?
*▪And for Chrissakes, no Batman appearances!* He's had enough movies, games, TV shows, and animated movies by now. The objective here is to establish Superman as a viable franchise character. If it's a hit, you can bring in Supergirl and Superboy into the fold for the sequels, but the focus must always remain on Superman
That's it, guys. That's your recipe for a good Superman video game. It can absolutely be achieved as long as you approach it with creativity, and honor the most storied source material in comic book history. It won't be easy, but a great Superman game never should be. Making good games for Superman is supposed to be difficult, otherwise the character would never evolve to overcome contemporary challenges

I agree with the spirit of this, but all of these things sound like they would make for an incredibly tedious, and, to put it frankly, unfun game. All of what you described are things people complain about in modern games, and... like... just wouldn't be fun. There's a fine line between "challenging" and "tedious" and the game you described would probably skirt the line at best. After all, you're not talking about punishing mechanics in the same sense as Dark Souls, where the game is punishing your misuse of it's mechanics, most of these mechanics seem to punish you for using them, which isn't fun.
All in all nobody wants to play a game to find out that being Superman sucks balls (which it does, being most superheroes would suck serious balls). We want to feel the power of being Superman, the fights that only the Last Son of Krypton can have, and to feel the righteousness that can only come for fighting for truth, justice, and the American way swell in our chests. If I wanted to play a game that is designed to frustrate me, I'd just play "Get Over It", not a game where I should feel like an untouchable monolith of justice..
Maybe I'm being whooshed, I don't know, I'm inclined to assume you're serious because of your responses prior but... regardless, I liked the thought.

And since I mentioned this in a reply, I'd like to put it on the main thread: What if Superman's powers work differently than we assume. What if he can't do everything all the time and has timers, cooldowns, exhaustion and such, but never TELLS anyone so they can't exploit these limitations. I'm not saying there should be an array of meters cluttering the screen, but that there are ways to generate tension. Heat vision, cold breath, super speed and super senses can't come cheaply (in a biological sense), or else we'd see him use those abilities far more often.

He does have a cooldown for his cold breath, and its how long it takes for him to breath in again. Putting that kind of thing on powers would get annoying pretty fast also. And he does get tired. Though hes immune to most damage, that doesnt mean he doesnt get tired of carrying things. I imagine he might sometimes just sleep when he hits the bed like humans do when theyre extremely tired. But, there i believe there are also powers, even if they've been added recently, that superman only uses when hes truly out of options. Remember that one adult cartoon, ( atleast i assume its adult, or atleast mature, since it has swearing,) where these... either three or four ppl fight him and almost kill him. After he gets beaten to near death, he seems to show signs of having telepathy and telekenesis, and some kind of crazy ability to destroy ppls power at the source. If anyone knows what show im talkin about, plz tell me the name.
Edit: the name of the show is superman vs the elites.

@Intensity Fit Club It's strange. I do keep running into this attitude of "Superman can do ANYTHING and EVERYTHING at ANY TIME and I won't accept that he has any kind of limitations!!" I'm no expert, but those citations sound like Golden- or Silver-age Superman back when he was so OP he was rearranging solar systems and such. I understand the sentiment, but in order to have a compelling character with obstacles to overcome and room for growth, that simplistic, almost childish hero worship needs to be tempered with some modern-age reality if we are to bring this idealized god-being into focus and tell good stories.
I also hesitate to draw a correlation between those who have this attitude and those who believe very strongly that "might makes right" in all situations and would make Superman their king if they could, but there has been a lot of overlap. Again, I don't wish to draw too fine a point on this subject, but that is why it doesn't surprise me to see the previous comment come from "Intensity Fit Club".
As with all of my what-ifs, take them with a grain of salt or dismiss them entirely. I just like to get people thinking in new and exciting directions.

When I think of Superman, I think of part of one of his quotes:
“I feel like I live in a world of cardboard, always taking constant care not to break something. To never lose control or someone could die.”
Personally, I think restraint should be a theme in a Superman game. It should really put you in place of Superman and give you the ability to destroy everything around you if you aren’t careful. Allow for public opinion to shift against him if you do. The way I would do it is:
Have Superman getting frustrated in the beginning and struggling with control. Lex Luthor starts campaigning for mayor or president and to help his campaign - he has a robot reeking havoc on the city, Superman shows up to fight it. Robot self destructs and blows up a decent chunk of the city. Lex blames Superman for it and starts holding anti-Superman rallies.
Public completely turns on Superman and demands he turn himself in. Lex wins president/mayor and starts putting Superman security measures all over Metropolis or the US or maybe he even talks the UN into making the entire planet anti-Superman and puts security measures all over the planet. Superman doesn’t risk going to the fortress of solitude and goes to space. He spends some time wrestling with the idea of going back to earth and questioning whether earth really needs him.
He decides he’s going to make a home on another planet and ends up caught in one of Darkseid or Zod’s plans for that planet of beings that are similar to humans. He gets his aggression out in the scheme of things and finally tests his strength against a being that can handle it. Back on earth, Lex has started to show his true colors and is running the city/country like a dictatorship. The people regret electing him and some even start a resistance. Lex starts publicly executing members of the resistance.
Back to Superman, after he defeats Zod/Darkseid and gets his bravado back he realizes that people will always need protecting. That just because earth doesn’t want him doesn’t mean that they don’t need him. He returns to his home to see the crisis at hand, saving part of the resistance from execution. The resistance rallies behind Superman, more people join because Superman gives them hope.
They tell him how they’ve destroyed a lot of the anti-Superman security. As glad as Superman is to be supported again, he tells them that it is his fight and fights his way through the city to find Lex and enter boss fight with Lex in a giant robot and anti Superman weapons.
Superman saves the day, gets awarded a Medal of Honor or something similar and he begins rebuilding the city with the rest of Metropolis. It’s not a perfect story but I made it up on the spot so
Edit: Separated the story into paragraphs.

I think Superman Returns basically got it right in concept. Superman's conflict isn't personal harm as said at 3:20, it's that the people he cares about aren't invincible.
I think Dead Rising is a good basis for a Superman game. Focus on rescuing civilians, and dealing with 'Psychopaths' (his villains).
The threat of villains should be stunning you, and endangering civilians that form your health bar. I can imagine trying to fight off brute enemies while trying to reinforce a bridge with ice breath. Flying into the sky, looking down on the city with 'Action Vision', and seeing a heatmap of danger in the city.
Have Braniac put Metropolis in a dome. He can flood the city with robots based on DC species (Thanagarians, Tamaraneans, etc). Civilians are your health bar. Break up the action with stealth segments as Lois and Jimmy Olsen (which Marvel's Spider-Man essentially done).

    • @АбуталифАкылбеков
      @АбуталифАкылбеков 4 ปีที่แล้ว +9

I was thinking about the same. That's a groundbreaking change oh concept. Imagine Batman trying to save people. Alongside such a thing as safety of civilians meter, there is also his own health bar. That makes the game intense. Though, sometimes Batman can have people dying (like in Arkham series) or their rescue is part of the script, so you don't care all the time about civilians.
That's not the case with superman. He has powers to save everyone and if ONE person dies, it's his defeat. I think it's a best opportunity to make him use all of his powers, something that defines a good super hero game.
It also means no conventional beat'em up. Every punch is winning punch, so fights must be done creatively.

    • @DoctorInk20
      @DoctorInk20 4 ปีที่แล้ว +2

Yes! Finally somebody who remembers Superman actually *cares about people.* 😁 "First, we attack his heart!" and all that.
Personal harm wouldn't be much of a concern, sure, but I don't mind the idea of Superman getting tossed around. He may not come to harm, but major force must act upon him and he react in turn.
Regarding the "health meter", I don't quite think indicating "civilians" or "the city" works, but saving them would be core to the gameplay. Have you ever played *Incredible Hulk: Ultimate Destruction?* That was great for making you feel powerful, but still having to keep on your toes regarding you own wellbeing. It was more like a tolerance gauge than health, strictly speaking. With a big enough force, Superman can stumble or be put out of commission for a while.
Enemy-wise, I think you've the right idea - robots, mutants, aliens, etc. for enemies, but if you really want to give Superman a major physical (and non-Kryptonite based) threat, then you unleash Parasite on him. I don't think he gets enough credit. He'd be an interesting challenge to build a boss fight around.

Few ideas, coming from a Superman fan:
    - Make Superman fight against "wizards". Maybe not too strong wizards, to not make ir unfair to superman. But he is weak to magic, so you could make him fight guys who use magic powers.
    - Aliens. Intelligent or not intelligent. They're aliens, so you can make them as strong as you want. If they are kryptonians, like Zod, could be easier, because they have the same power as Superman.
    - Make him fight him against the entire Justice League. Each member could be a boss on its own. Wonder Woman on the island, throwing amazons to fight Superman, Aquaman the same with atlanteans. The Batman "level" could include more intelectual challenges, and a boss fight with Batman in a suit BvS style. Green Lanters has the Corps, and Flash maybe other speedsters. Cyborg could use some weird robots. Why is the JL evil? Mental control from Maxwell Lord, or whatever.
    - Mutants. Lex Luthor could make an experiment that turns many humans around the world into mutants, trying to take humankind into the next step in evolution. Many people take advantage, and Superman must stop them, and Luthor.
    - Put Metropolis in danger. And Lois, his mom, Jimmy Olsen, Lana Lang, Perry White, even Batman. Also random citizens, Arkham style.
    - Inside a weird dimension, because of Mr. Mxyzptlk. Kind of the Mad Hatter levels on Arkham.
    - Make him fight far away from the sun. His powers could go weaker slowly.
    - random thugs could use kryptonite and "red sun" weapons, provided by Lex Luthor.
    - At the begining of Rebirth, Superman had to go to the center of the earth to romove some devices. It was hard even for him, and almost die. This could not support a hole game of course, but maybe a level.
    - Use Doomsday somehow
    - Darkseid. But I would use him in the third game of the "trilogy", an invasion from Apokolips.
I like Superman, so I would love a good videogame about him, and the Arkham series, which I love, gives me hope.

Hell when Doomsday first showed up he didn't have any other special abilities to explain it, he was just that powerful.

I think the easy way to make a Superman game would be to almost go with the story of Smallville the show. Where he is still learning and developing his powers and relationships and coming to terms with the fact he is from another world. Makeing it the emotinal stakes you talked about, with his parents and friends from Smallville High. He would go from the smaller threats at the begining like he did at school and work his way up, by descovering new powers throughout the game, until midway when he finnally gets his suit made by Martha Kent and becomes Superman with all of his powers. Like the show, at this point he will have bigger threats such as his former freind Lex Luthor and more physical threats such as Brainiac, and maybe even Darkside, this making it both emotinal and physical stakes for him even with all of his powers. That and with the way Smallvile handled the other Leauge members if the developers wanted to add them because of Smallville, they would add to the emotinal because they are not as strong as Superman but also making it not only nestalgic for Smallville fans but also to build more of a world with more people to interact with and work with to make it feel more real, to make the player feel more like they are Superman. This giving him more character but keeping everything that makes him Superman.
Sorry this is so long winded😂 Thank You, Loved the video!1

Always had this idea for a Superman game, inspired by InFamous, Batman: Arkham, Spider-Man: Web of Shadows, Metroid Prime, and Incredible Hulk: Ultimate Destruction, as well as the decent concept/poorly executed Superman Returns game.
The beginning of the game has Superman destroy a gigantic meteor threatening to destroy the Earth. He destroys it, Superman-style, but didn't expect it to contain a whole spectrum of kryptonite, with small amounts red and green kryptonite ending up lodged near his heart (let's take something from Iron Man--why not?).
Landing back on Earth, he finds on the computer of his Fortress of Solitude that he's not only slowly dying of Kryptonite poisoning, but the red kryptonite has locked off most of his powers and is affecting his behavior. So he eventually has to re-learn (read: unlock his later powers through the story or upgrades) his cooler powers like freeze breath or super-vision.
Red kryptonite is known to have unpredictable effects in the comics, but the most common ones being affecting his powers (to the point of taking them away) and/or drastically changing his personality to be more of a jerkass.
This means that we can have something in InFamous and Spidey Web of Shadows where Superman has the option of being more of a "bad guy"--not necessarily actively murdering innocents (that would be *way* too out of character for Supes, especially early in the game), but allowing him to be more destructive and violent towards his opponents *without* punishing the player, perhaps giving a morality system.
Or, if that's too cumbersome, we can just ignore the harsh destruction and implied murder completely and just let Supes cut loose with no consequences. (i.e--Spider-Man crushes enemies with scaffolding--Batman runs people over with the Batmobile in Arkham Knight*without* killing them--why does this have to stop at Superman?)
The green kryptonite justifies a health bar, which Hulk in Ultimate Destruction had--in that game, bullets and regular soldiers do little to nothing, but explosives and Hulkbusters could chip away at him pretty well.
This means you can still have basic robbers and gangbangers trying (and failing) to shoot at Superman with *barely noticable* decreasing of the health bar (if at all), so their threat mostly comes from hurting other civilians and as Metropolis crime activity busywork (Spider-Man-style).
Escalate enemy variety from there. Level up to Intergang opponents that can do *some* damage to Superman with their Apokolips laser guns, but they go down in one hit. Have Lex Luthor or Braniac (or both, Silver Age team-up style) throw some robots flying around, so there's more of a physical threat to challenge the player's fighting skills. Give Metallo a robot army (like in Whatever Happened to the Man of Tomorrow?) so there's actually an enemy that could *really* hurt you.
This is all starting to sound a bit like Silver Age silliness, but I think that's the best way for a Superman game to work. Businessman Lex would be a boring threat in a Superman game, so bring him back to being a mad scientist. Throw in Mxyzptlik in there. Have Bizarro be a recurring chase boss.
There's so much you can do for a fantastic Superman game if you really dive into the mythos.

I don't want to overdo kryptonite, especially since my idea already has Superman deal with the green rocks in his heart at the beginning, just so less "super" enemies have a remote chance of hurting him.
With red kryptonite affecting his powers, I had the idea that he'd have to "re-develop" some of his natural immunities, which Kelex (his personal robot Alfred from the Fortress of Solitude) would recommend going through physical trauma to build that immunity.
Now, Superman is still bulletproof from the get-go and it still takes a lot to hurt him, but he is no longer immune to extremely large amounts of heat and electricity (flying through fire and crossing through telephone wires is fine, but enemies with plasma-based weaponry and getting struck by lightning presents at least a minor danger and can stun him).
However, boss fight encounters with Livewire (an electrical themed foe) and Volcana (a lava-themed foe) end with Superman not only developing an immunity to fire and electricity, but also using those immunities in creative ways.
      -Fly through oil rig
      -Fly through fire
-basically become the Human Torch and melt through enemies
      -Fly through electrical pylon
-Charge yourself with electricity (à la the remote control batarang from Arkham)
-Now able to stun strong enemies
-Become a temporary electromagnet that pulls pesky robot drone enemies towards you

I always thought a morality system for a Superman game would be great. In fact, if someone could combine Spider-Man PS4 with Tell Tale gameplay and the city health bar concept from Superman Returns, that would be my ideal Superman game.
Also, it might be cooler to have Lex Luthor be like Telltale Joker in a way: he starts out as a possibly corrupt business man that, depending on your choices, becomes a mad scientist supervillain or begins running for president.
I like a lot of your ideas. Esp. the Healthbar ideas.

I actually prefer the morality system to be more subtle and nuanced, rather than just giving the player the option for Superman to be a callous, destructive jerk that could hardly be called a hero.
I always found Superman at his most compelling when he is fundamentally heroic regardless of how bleak or morally grey the situation gets.
Take a look at Mass Effect, or, as you've suggested, TellTale Batman. Shepard and TellTale's Batman are still fundamentally heroic people because they are bravely risking their lives for the greater good. The player choice comes in making the character a paragon of virtue or a borderline anti-hero.
Now, I don't necessarily want TellTale style "press A to do good option, B to do bad option" in a Superman game, but rather I'd like situations in real-time gameplay for a player to either take a more peaceful, humane approach, or a destructive, ruthless approach.
      Example: Hostage Situation.
Peaceful options: Superheat guns to make criminals drop them; use superspeed and knock them out from behind without them noticing; if they're intimidated (super-senses could be a Detective Mode thing to notice that), simply walk up to them. Because you're Superman.
Destructive options: X-ray vision--locate a pipeline to heat vision and flood the room; draw their fire and catch all their bullets, then flick them right back; or just *punch* them. You're Superman.
Basically, the "morality" system just gives players an excuse to be creatively destructive without being totally out-of-character.
I actually wrote more details about how this can work in another comment, I might copy-paste it.

I think flight should be the first priority with a Superman game. The flying should be fun, smooth and easily controlled. With a huge map you should have the option to fly at normal speed or light speed. You should be able to fly at different speeds and that too should be fun.
The flying should be so fun that you just want to spend the majority of the game just flying around and exploring.
The game should be story based. I don't see a free roam based superman game working all that well. All his powers should be used in a way that gets you passed levels. Superman really doesn't use his powers unless it's absolutely necessary.
Saving Lois a few times in the game could come into play also. I hope we eventually get a good superman game. I don't see it happening probably for another 5 years or more...

Option 1: Have the game start in Smallville, with a period of time like the show where he's still discovering his powers and slowly rises into the Superman role, eventually going to Metropolis and potentially tying into the Justice League by the end of it.
Option 2: The Death of Superman arc. He begins as this all-powerful hero, and goes up against Doomsday, ultimately dying. Only, as we know, he returns from the dead and has to recover his powers. They could also add in the "Reign of the Supermen" arc, having him take down the pretenders to the Superman title, ending with a fight against Metallo/Luthor.

The game starts with you in Smallville as a teenaged Clark Kent. Your powers have just begun to manifest so they are not only at base levels, but you do not even have them all. You'll level up all your powers the same way you did in Crackdown. This way you can customize Superman the way you want him to be.
As the game goes on you begin to level up the powers you have, and develop some new ones along the way...by the 3rd act of the game, you have all of your powers, and all of them are mostly maxed out. You will be able to traverse seamlessly from Smallville, to Metropolis, to space, to Apokolips, to Warworld (the next gen consoles will apparently have this capability) and the enemies types you will face will be:
1.Thugs/Terrorists: who will have earth based weapons ranging from handguns, to Rocket launchers, and vehicle mounted weapons
    2. Lex Luthor henchmen: will have earth based weapons as well, but some will be equipped with Kryptonite weapons, and Mech suits

We could have him start out as standard Superman, and as the game goes along we can upgrade his powers to Silver age era levels of OP. It could be a subplot of him coping and coming to terms with the fact that his family and world is gone. He is the last of a handful of kryptonians left. I know people hate Man Of Steel, But I love the concept of his dad being an AI hologram helping him. He finally copes with his loss and his feelings of not belonging through optional side events that give upgrade points, allowing him to fly faster and hit harder and have more powerful heat vision until his last upgrade. Its his solar flare move where he just fucking turns into a hydrogen bomb and incinerates everything. You can unlock a variety of suits like the Spider-Man PS4 game, from the classic one to the white one to the one in the comics that he wears after he resurrects from his fight with Doomsday and he has the crown and shit to the Black Lantern suit to the remnants of his suit when he gets blasted to the future and he has a mix of his torn up suit and Mad Max armor to just flying around as Clark Kent. We could go to a ton of locations not only on Earth but around the universe.

Starting off as a young Clark Kent where you earn your abilities would be interesting. Adding in RPG elements like picking the good route or evil route could possibly work. Depending on which one you take you could end up fighting certain villains. Or even characters who are normally Superman's allies. Maybe have it where its the start of Superman's career. He has to learn to be Superman and chooses either to be good or evil. He comes across various characters and has to make certain choices that impact the story. Maybe this is where he first meets Batman and Lex Luthor along with others. Maybe he also travels to other places beyond earth as well. There are many ways to make a Superman game work it's just very difficult.

I think there's two big things a superman game needs to get right.
    1. Making protecting people compelling: Superman Returns had a solid idea in that you drastically cut the need to overblow credible threats by having protecting threatened civilians being a big component of gameplay. Coming up with techniques or shortcuts to make "pedestrian" types a component of gameplay without having them being annoying (Maybe having them get into some kind of armored structure when the disaster starts, with the objective being getting civilians who cant go into it, as well as protecting said structure) would mean you can build a wider scale of enemies based on how they harm civilians, how they delay superman from protecting civilians and solving crisis, and finally if they can indeed actually hurt superman.
    2. Making Superman's powers impactful: Superman's powers seem kind of needless if they're not really used for anything besides beating people up, making sure theirs world objects and obstacles that react somewhat organically to superman's powers may seem obvious but also need consideration to ensure the games limitations make sense and don't contridict each other (With some exceptions needing to be made because games are always going to have some limitations)

  • @MorningDusk7734

I actually like the idea of making the "Joe Schmo mugger" completely ineffective. Make it so Superman can walk right up to a robber, as they are shooting at him, and crush the gun in his hands. But, like you said, make it so if Superman harms the criminal, his reputation with the city goes down. make him safely deposit the criminal with the proper authorities, or somehow restrain them. Then, make it so you can't ignore any crime going on. If Superman tries to fly too far, make a crime happen. Problem solved.

  • @christiandagostino5516
    @christiandagostino5516 4 ปีที่แล้ว +3

They could create their own story where someone like lex luthor or any other baddy for Superman exposed the whole city to some sort of weak red sun burst, thus limiting Superman's powers so that he doesn't one shot every street thug, but not making him useless against them either. And as the game goes on they could set up multiple different boss fights where they get harder and harder, but at the end of each one you get stronger and stronger so that at the final boss fight your on an even playing field with whoever the main baddy is. It would solve the problems and keep the game and story somewhat logical as far as Superman goes

  • @KipcreateGaming
    @KipcreateGaming 2 ปีที่แล้ว +2

I think the problem with making a challenging Superman game when it comes to a street level crime-fighter is one of perspective.
How do you make interesting and challenging gameplay when most things can't hurt Superman?
Well, the answer is actually really simple. Do what the comics do. Don't challenge Superman physically.
The street thugs with guns can't hurt Superman. But they can hurt everyone else. That's why Superman is there. The challenge was never survival. The challenge is saving people. It's doing the right thing. It's using that awesome, immeasurable power to do for others what they can't do for themselves.
I think that's where you could make a cool game. Have Superman human shielding for civilians, catching them from buildings, pulling them from rubble and catching falling girders and debris so they don't hit anyone. That's how you do it. That's how you make it different. You're not playing the game and mastering the systems for your own preservation. You're doing it to save people. And that's Superman.

Superman’s goal is to protect and inspire humanity and give them Hope. I wonder if they could give the player the full arsenal of Superman’s abilities to use, but then create the challenge of learning when and where to use restraint like Superman has to. When you don’t exercise restraint you cause varying degrees of collateral damage and consequences which affects how humanity views you. Now I do think in order to do a Superman game right, you can’t keep the game earth bound. You’d have to give players situations where they need to unleash Superman’s full arsenal of abilities as well, or situations where his abilities are severely diminished, i.e. Apokolips, Daxam, Warworld, Mongal, etc. Of course like you said, you’d also need to do some deep character development as well to make the characters feel real and relatable.
I do think a good Arkham style Superman game is definitely possible, I’m just not convinced anybody is gonna take the risk when they could just go with the almost guaranteed money maker that is Batman.

Jacob Hayes Yeah, I suppose it’s just that what people expect doesn’t exactly work with every character. If we want a game where Superman could showcase his strength and desteoy stuff, we can’t really have him do it in an open world Metropolis. A Crysis-like semi-open world game could work though. You wouldn’t have a completely open world but levels that are open enough for Superman to fly around and use super-speed but also have a scenario like going up against a star-fleet or something to have him break stuff. You could even have him trapped in an entirely hostile environment such as the Phantom Zone, or to a lesser extent, Apokolips for a portion of the game so Superman wouldn’t feel out of character when you’re taking out your stress by punching, ramming and blasting almost anything that moves (and even some that doesn’t, like defensive structures such as walls or towers) since almost anything will be immediately aggroed against you. I think if we can just get away from the idea of a completely open world Superman game on Metropolis and actually dig into the comics themselves for villains scenarios that can genuinely challenge Superman, both of which there are plenty, we can at least start getting somewhere.

    How to do it:
1 - let the player, at the very begining or tutorial part of the game, experience a fullpower invulnerable semiomnipotent superman shreding everything in a fun way.
2 - Nerf superman by making luthor (or any villain similar to him )use some kind of poison/gas version of some of the many types of kriptonite (or maybe a new one), at a epic setpiece that takes place in the begining of the game, introducing the main villain and also the emotional stakes.
3 - Play with a weakened version of superman that progresses the game by slowly regaining his powers (flight, breath, lazer eyes, resistance) one by one after completing some key objectives or defeating key villans, etc
3.5 - Place hidden areas in the game that can only be acessed by the player when he has a particular power already unlockes (See bonus itens trough walls when unlocking super vision, some places only acessible trough flight, etc)
4 - Finally, recover all your powers in the end and fight the main villain again (him also being considerably stronger) on a final battle dbz style in space.
5 - After ending the main story, give the player the freedom to explore the open world with a full powered superman, being able to risk-free defeat normal enemies and easily defeat vilains, unlocking what is essentialy a sandbox mode

One way of doing it, whilst bending his powers a bit, would be giving him limited "sunpower". All his superpowers (heat vision, ice breath, sustaining deadly attacks, special melee attacks and flying!!!) would burn through that "mana pool", which would be constantly regenerating. Once you're out you actually get wounded by conventional attacks. Indefinite flying would still be possible by increasing the incoming radiation through higher altitude (at some point, not too high, regen outperforms drain from flying). This would also allow some shenanigans like night missions with lower regen and kryptonite temporarily limiting your max.

Maybe you could do a game where you CAN destroy enemies with one hit, but that kills them. And if you kill somebody you get a bad ending, so the player, to get the good ending, must defeat the enemies while not using all of his strenght (you can make the player control the force that he uses). This way, the players can lose if they restrain too much, or if they use too much strenght; obviously sometimes you can throw a powerful enemy or two.
