      The cloudburst Arkham Knight boss fight had already left a bad taste into me, and when I went to him and it is revealed to be the same boss fight with different villain, I literally didn't play the game for like a week. This fight isn't fun, it is annoying and frustrating that all these work lead to this.

      And there’s this thing when you do a couple of his races and challenges with Catwoman, but then the next one is in an area you still haven’t unlocked in the story so you can’t proceed. In Hush’s hideout in Arkham City, you see some canisters that some have said could have been Scarecrow’s fear toxin. They should have had Thomas perform surgery on Crane and become a co-conspirator in AK’s plot. Especially in terms of funding for Crane and Arkham Knight’s plan: Elliot could have slowly siphon money from Wayne Industries that somehow went unnoticed by Bruce or Lucius.
    Or even better, a part of the story could be that Jack Ryan or Vicki Vale found that the Arkham Knight’s operation in a Venezuela was traced back to Bruce thanks to Hush’s surgery.

      Apparently Paul Dini's original story for Arkham Knight (the one rocksteady decided not to go with) had Scarecrow and Hush as the main villains. All that Hush set up in Arkham City makes more sense if you think of this.

    The main thing that bothers me about Hush is regarding what Batman said in Arkham City. He told Oracle that he would be going after Hush tomorrow (one day after City's events). So, unless there's a comic I missed, did Batman just forget to pursue at the time? Or did he look for him once and said "Meh, I'll see him in a year". Seems really odd to me that Batman wouldn't pursue someone who could jeopardise everything for a whole year.

  • @rottensquid

    Basically, all of these complaints highlight the fact that the Arkham series is still expanding on the first game when it should have been changing the game. in 2015, MGSV and Witcher 3 came out.
    MGSV's systemic dynamics would have greatly benefited Arkham Knight. Had the ATV chases had a variety of approaches, they wouldn't have been so repetitive. Had taking out Bird affected your battle against Bane, or the world in general, or anything, it would have been more interesting. Had rescuing the political prisoners given you some important info, or benefited you in any way, they wouldn't have been so lackluster.
    On the other hand, had Arkham taken a page from the Witcher, and offered anything more than the barest minimum of story for any of these quests, especially the Hush quest, what a difference it would have made. Imagine if you could spend even half as much time as Hush as you spend as Vlodimir in Witcher, gleefully trashing everything Bruce Wayne has built, what an opportunity to build a character bond with both characters! But because it's an action game, they avoided character building like it was poison. Yet it wasn't an action campaign either. It wasn't even a detective mystery. It was basically nothing.
    The same is true for the firemen you rescue. What that whole side quest could have benefited from is some good old fashioned branching choices. Making judgement calls about a morally complex situation would have made you more involved with the story, and let you feel like Batman in the one way the game never does.
    At the end of the day, this whole list just shows that the Arkham formula, great as it is, has reached its limits, and needs to evolve like the rest of gaming. The next Batman needs to be systemic game, as well as an RPG with branching choices. We've been Batman the brawler and Batman the predator. The next step is to let us feel what it's like to be Batman the character, making hard decisions in a morally complex world, and having those decisions change the game. Not just in a telltale games kind of way, but in a Mass Effect kind of way, where our decisions effect our reputation, which changes how criminals interact with us, or cops, or Gordon, or even our sidekicks. Where the choices we make affect the game.
    That's an Arkham sequel I could get excited about.

      Facts. That’s honestly why Knight doesn’t like the other games that much, because previous hero side characters you’ve interacted with don’t acknowledge what you did, unless you go into the GCPD lockup, but that’s not even that interesting either. In Asylum any villain activity would either directly tie into the story, or would completely finish the Island events. In City, (besides the side mission mentioned in the video), everything tied back to an upgrade or an legit interaction with a side character. In origins, any side mission that didn’t give an upgrade, was at least acknowledged and appreciated by either Gordon or his daughter, fleshing out the dynamic between Batman and the GCPD. In Arkham Knight? Oh yea, thanks Batman, I know we could’ve never actually done that shit, so we appreciate that. That’s it, just a thank you and a lemme put u in a cell later, and that’s it. You get more lore from the equipment lockup, and just talking with the villains. Not that Knight is anywhere near bad, but they put too much time into Tank Warfare that they couldn’t world build with the characters they already had

      Yeah, I replayed the entire series just now (including platinums, lord city took forever), and...
      They're just super repetitive games period, if it weren't for the story and aesthetic and such they really wouldn't be notable games at all!
      Adding new gadgets isn't changing up the game, and other games have better tank combat, better action (Arkhams is too simple and easy), and better stealth. Gameplay wise, they are very weak games... They need to completely reshape the game, I'm not asking for DMC level combat, but just something far better

    • @rottensquid
      @rottensquid 4 ปีที่แล้ว

      @@kiwakokirigiri3923 The one thing these games have going for them, other than great atmosphere and great scripting (at least on the first two, courtesy Paul Dini) is the brawling and the stealth. Both were clever and innovative, designed perfectly to be engaging for a novice, and get deeper as you get better. That's why everyone fell in love, and they were right. Add to that the deep exploration of Batman lore, and you have a game worth spending time with.
      The problem is the game had way too much padding. Eventually, brawling with street thugs got so repetitive that the mechanic turned stale. Tracking down trophies would have been great if they'd been capped at the 150 most interesting, challenging ones, instead of 243 in Arkham Knight and a whopping 400+ in City, which I'll wager is why it took you forever. Almost all the side missions were challenging at first, but eventually began to feel like busywork, just a task to be checked off.
      The problem many games face now is that, once they get past the scripted quests, there's no more reason to play them. And the you can only create so many scripted quests. So to create the perception of extra value, the cut-and-paste challenges appear, things like collectables, or the same enemy xeroxed and littered all over the game map.
      With, say, the firemen, the monotony could be broken up with variations in who's guarding them, and how. I remember one group having two or three big burly guys that could take out Batman in two hits. Another was four guys surrounded by auto-guns. That was tricky, as it was hard to keep Batman from leaping into firing range when he was jumping from punch to punch. But after twenty or more, the variations ran out.
      Of course, this wasn't nearly as dull as the landmine tank fights, or the incredibly repetitive watchtowers and checkpoints.
      So the real question is how do you solve this problem without losing something valuable, without making an already overly long development time even longer? Do you just pair down the sidequest lengths? Fewer riddler trophies? Less watchtowers, etc? I think that's the obvious answer. But I think also, the best moments in the game were the aha moments when you were given the challenge of a device you came to rely on suddenly not working, and you had to figure out a new solution. I think there weren't enough of those.
      And if you think about it, the most celebrated boss fight in the game is the one that's made entirely of those moments. There are twelve ways to attack Mr. Freeze, and each can be used only once. That dynamic could have applied to every watchtower, checkpoint, hostage, etc. as well. The game had a dozen gadgets and tricks that you never use, because the smoke, the basic battering, and the bat-claw were more or less enough for everything. But once you get used to them, they get old. Take them away and you have to get used to a whole new skill set. That's what keeps the game fresh.
      But I think the next Batman game should dispense with most of the Arkham format. It's not fresh anymore, and yet another game of the same brawls and stealth will impress no one. Arkham was an amazing game in its day, but its time has passed. The new generation demands a new kind of game. I hope they've figured that out.

      @@rottensquid It took forever because of doing the map challenges, with all 4 characters. Not the riddler stuff, but yeah that does take longer than it should in city.
      I disagree with the combat getting deeper, it starts simple and remains simple. Yes there's some enemies that you need to use certain tactics on but that's about it. Just a matter of memory, not really skill
      But yeah that's a very good perspective and I agree, although there will be plenty that would bash the game for not being anything like the older ones if that were to happen

    one thing to appreciate about the apc missions, chasing those things around will most of the time help you find outposts or mines so you don't have to hunt them down yourself. they mark on the map once your within a certain radius so you'd be surprised how much it fill your map after a couple chases

    Regarding the Bird side mission in the comics Bane had 3 lieutenants, not just Bird, each with different abilities. Would the mission have been better if it had involved taking each one down and each one requiring a different way of being taken down and each one of them fighting in a different way, and it was a requirement before the first fight with Bane?

    I can say that fot me, the redeeming part of Bird side mission in AO is that you get "Disarm and destroy" ability as a reward. I like the idea behind AO side missions that every side mission unlocks a specific upgrade that you otherwise cannot obtain in game.

  • @jasonpratt5126

    Man, I really thought I remembered the chief working with Firefly. It had nothing to do with beating Firefly's side mission, which could be done independently, but I did think it tied in.

    • @DegenerateJay
      @DegenerateJay  4 ปีที่แล้ว +3

      It did kind of yeah. I mean the chief was essentially getting Firefly to do it but we were trying to simplify the plot. The chief is behind it technically but I suppose FF is the one actually igniting them. It ties in, it's just not a super interesting tie in imo. Better than nothing for sure.

    • @jasonpratt5126
      @jasonpratt5126 4 ปีที่แล้ว

      @@DegenerateJay I think the actual story of the side mission is pretty okay: the chief is trying to keep jobs for his guys, and is using FF in areas that don't seem to matter to help them for job security. But his conscience is bothering him and FF is a loose cannon, so he tries to call it off somehow, and FF hits the crew. (Just not sure how thugs tie into this... He had them in Origins, but they were borrowed from Joker/Mask.) It's a heck of a lot more nuanced than the Firefly missions themselves, so it really helps those by extension. It's just, as you say, the application of the side mission is repetitively bleh. At best it's a less random red-crime system from Origins with a story tie in: go to areas figure out how to fight the mob, do that, repeat.

  • @b1ackspid3r43

    Here’s how I think the Hush side mission should have gone:
    Similar way that Degenerate Jay said but hush was hunting down everyone Thomas Wayne was close to because he saved his mother and stopped him from getting his inheritance so Batman found different bodies around the city like “The Perfect Crime” but it’s just a quick scan and there is a quick story to go with the body. Eventually Batman discovers what’s happing and tries to contact Lucius Fox because he was close to his father, but he doesn’t answer so you go to Wayne tower and (you might not like this idea) you find him dead. Batman is devastated, and he learns that Thomas Elite is going to Wayne Manor and takes Alfred hostage, you go there and confront him, he tells Batman he wants you to bring him Bruce Wayne... Yada yada yada, same type of thing with the game but he says he doesn’t hate Bruce, he just hates his father and wants to destroy everything he built and everything he cared about.
    So what do you think of my idea?

    1. Riddler ( Knight) 2. Nora Freeze (City) 3. Deadshot ( City) 4. Escaped Prisoners ( Origins) 5. Mad Hatter ( City). It's okay but the best Mad Hatter for me is the side mission in Origins where you go through a nightmarish Wonderland to stop Mad Hatter from killing his latest victim. The Mad Hatter side mission from Knight's pretty good too from what I've seen, haven't played since I don't have it, but it too is better than the Mad Hatter side mission in Arkham City.

    I don't get why people don't enjoy the Firefighter and Militia missions from Knight. They're some of the best side missions in my opinion, better than anything in City. Do they have literally 0 story? Sure. But I take gameplay over story, and these side missions are just an excuse to have more combat or predator encounter. I enjoy the gameplay and these missions give me more reason to partake in the gameplay I enjoy.

Armed and Dangerous was the most dynamic gameplay option for the batmobile in my opinion. It feels really cool ramming into cars and chasing around a big APC. I found it dynamic and fun to play as apposed to the tank fights.
