Reminder that wearing corsets is not the same as tight lacing or corseting. Corsets are NOT bad for your health if wore properly. If someone is complaining about their corset, it's because it's not a good one, cheap, not fitting, bad materials, bad boning, bad lacing. Stay healthy, do some research about corsetry, love you ❤️

Victorian corsets never deformed rib chages or squashed internal organs because those corsets weren't supposed to be worn this tight. The reason we are under the assumption they did is because women of that era would pay artists to paint over their black and white photos to make them look as if they had freakishly tiny waists.

Corsets are actually used to better posture and as an undergarment, like a bra for example. What you’re talking about is tight lacing, which is different from just wearing a corset. Tight lacing is when you progressively tighten the corset over a period of time to achieve a thinner waist. I’m not an expert, but I had a corset hyper fixation once and watched a lot of TH-camrs that were experts on the topic. Main person I watched was Bernadette Banner, I believe. I love her videos. She actually has a back brace for scoliosis that functions like a corset, if I remember correctly.
Edit: fixed a typo. Also please note, as said previously, I am not an expert. Please do your own research if you want to learn more or start corseting.

@@PeaceOfMake Yes and no. It depends on what you mean. When someone wears a corset regularly, they don't wear it 24/7. When you aren't wearing the corset, you're supposed to strengthen your core through exercise, just like a person who never wears a corset is supposed to. It's all about listening to your body, and it should never hurt. Your muscles may feel sore if you have bad posture as it's putting your body in a position it normally isn't in. It should feel like someone is hugging you tightly, but not so hard it puts a ton of pressure on your body to where it's painful.
If you want to start corseting, just be sure to do research prior and look into good corset stores. Buying one off of Amazon or something isn't recommended as a poorly or differently shaped corset to your body type can be harmful. I bought my corset off of Amazon, but it was way too tight and I need to look into other stores that are good for their price. Don't cheap out on a corset.
By the way, I do not recommend tight lacing as it can be extremely harmful to your body.

Unfortunately corseting gets a really bad wrap due to tight lacing. Tight lacing was not that popular and while there were definitely periods where it was more popular and people who took it too far, throughout the history of corseting most people never did it or only did it on an occasion.
Corsets are not just excellent shape wear, but also fantastic support garments that can help hold your body weight and keep your back aligned. Additionally they protect you from the crinoline (I think that's how it's spelled) digging into your waist. The crinoline is that metal hoop that makes dresses puffy and keeps creeps from being able to feel you up

Karolina Zebrowska has a good video on it, but there are common misconceptions about corsets and what they do. Tight-lacing can be dangerous, but it was relatively uncommon amongst most women (you can't do housework if you can barely breatge afterall). Corsets were custom-made to the wearer's body to fit and compress the body equally (this is shown when u tighten the laces on the corset, the sides are supposed to be perfectly parallel to eachother) and they also don't move organs, but they will compress them and do the rest of the things that he says they do if youre really trying to squeeze.
I haven't studied waist trainers tho, so im not positive if that still applies

Actually - corsets were worn NOT to reduce waist size, but as a support for the back due to all of the layers of the gown, kind of like a bra today. Of course tight lacing was involved because of society and beauty standards, but the way they achieved their small waists was by PADDING the bust and hips, then the waist becomes significantly smaller because of perspective. Also a corset, if you tight-lace It, moves your organs kind of like pregnancy does, so It’s not really a big deal.

I say this as a historical dress enthusiast and amateur historical corset maker in my free time: if the corset/ the stays/ the boned bodice or whatever else is made correctly to your measurements using a historical pattern or a pattern based on a historical garment, it should not hurt, be restrictive, impede your breathing or mobility. If women and men wore corsets and other boned garments in the past it was for support, comfort, posture and to give the silhouette fashionable for the era which was not always a teeny tiny waist!! Especially 18th century (and prior) stays were very very VERY rarely tightlaced to an extreme because why in the world would most people do that?? ThE MALE gAZE? No. Women at the time were not all how they were described in contemporary books and writings because that was the ideal for men, not the norm. Most women who wore stays and corsets had other things to worry about than looking pretty for guys like for instance feeding themselves and their families, and...oh,not dying! And as already mentioned, in some eras and some places it was not uncommon for men to wear corsets.
If you made it this far into this comment of me ranting about a topic nobody gives two shits about, why? And are you ok?

Hey man, i give a shit about what you had to say and im glad someone did. Common sense should tell everyone that if the corset was such a destructive peice of fashion, it wouldnt have lasted as long as it did.
This whole stereotype idea that corsets were design to squeeze rather than shape has "stayed" (get it), relevant a little too long. I never understand how so much evidence that medieval people had enough of a grasp of anatomy to design a full plate suit of steal that fits the wearer perfectly but, people think they couldnt do that with cloth, leather and wood also.
Thats like someone in the future looking at a fashion designer of today and saying that the hat is designed to be squeezed over the head otherwise, it would blow off in the wind.

@@killerkrok55 Yess!!! I too often find myself aimlessly arguing about corsets with stubborn people that refuse the evidence and won't let their stupid little prejudices go. I have made historical corsets for fuck's sake! If they were so painful I wouldn't have to make three fittings and five mockups to get the right shape. I'm so glad someone finally agrees!!! I wish you well and I sincerely hope you have a very nice and happy life. :)

@@lonelygovernment4544 aye thank you very much for the well wishes and i hope the same for you!
If i were a little more daring i'd order a corset right now. But im afraid it would squeeze my ribs and liver into my pelvis. Lol.
Nothing but success and good fortune seems to be in your future, according to me, and your hard work ofcourse.

I’m not 100%, but if the corset isn’t tight laced isn’t it more like a spandex and a bra mixed together. I remember reading that if the wearer was lacing the corset too tightly that could cause issues. :0

Tight-lacing was frowned upon when corsets were used. Why do that when you can just use padding for optical illusions? Lol
