Actually, the worst thing bout Mamamoo is that Byul isn't showcased enough in main tracks. She has a really beautiful vocal color and she has the skill to back it up. As for their vibrato, I guess Hwasa and Solar are a lil inconsistent. But it's Byul's lack of vocal lines that drives me crazy sometimes.

Yeah, Immediately confused at what he meant there. Irene's upper register sounds a lot like Wendy so I thought that was going to be the comparison. Seulgi and Joy sound similar only when in falsetto. Irene sings way softer and Wendy sings more powerful cause she's given more belting lines. Joy, Yeri, and Seulgi are are all so distinct that I can't even understand lol.

Yes, this is why I don't consider it a "negative" the clearly work on this heavily. Wendy and Seulgi have different vocal tonality but to harmonize like they do, they have to train their voices to sound similar. However, what I think they did for Queendom was smart, it highlighted the ladies individually on the chorus, and it can train the fan's ears to hear the differences better. I know many fans did not like that Queendom lacked RV's usual harmonization, but to gain new fans, they need to let the ladies shine individually. That said, one of the best harmonization duos is.....YERI and Wendy! If you hear them together ONLY like in Bing Bing they have incredible harmonization!!!

The fact that in that clip Hwasa was hella sick. She’s a very underrated vocalist also Moonbyul have a lot of potential. For me not only Wheein is a excellent vocalist in the group, all of them are amazing with their strengths and yes they may have flaws but their vocal ensemble is simply the best. Also the individuality of the members not only vocally but even in their stage presence and dance makes them very versatile to ALL of them, without mentioning their creativity and autonomy in their music 🤩

I don't think Hwasa's vocals are underrated at all . Literally everyone from the korean music industry who's familiar with Hwasa have praised Hwasa's unique vocals ( the rasp and the range in her voice) . Also, the same thing goes for Moonbyul . The latter's distinct deep voice is very much appreciated . To sum up, every single Mamamoo member has a vital role in the group .

@@samiafliti1848 yes hwasa is always praised by professionals but you rarely see people appreciating her vocals under youtube videos when her techniques are really good. i never see comments that praise her technique, agility, control, vocal range etc. too bad people think only crystal clear voices or belting 24/7 or falsetto, which she can do all, are considered as good vocals.
Mamamoo vocals is no joke. They know how to compliment each others vocals and blend beautifully. Definitely a powerhouse within the 3rd generation.
MAMAMOO has their own tone individually and when they sing together it blends perfectly

I don't think RV lacks variety because of their tone, it's just their ways of singing are very similar, the SM singing style. Your "worst" quality for Red Velvet is actually also one of their strengths. Since they "sound" similar their voices do not clash with each other when they sing in unison for their choruses.
Yes, good singers should be able to do both. Good singers can adapt their tone a bit to fit with the people they’re singing with. It could also be their producers who push it.

Thats most of the SM groups, everybody talk about sm being the best vocal company but for me they only debute groups who can fit their vocals together but individually there is not potential. Wendy can be a potential soloist but the other members cant relate. The same with EXO.

With Red Velvet, I honestly don’t think their voices are that similar at all? They blend together extremely well (especially Wendy) but I can tell apart every single one of them singing with almost no difficulty, and I’ve pretty much been able to do so since I first got into them. At most, I think Wendy and Irene can sound kind of similar on more rap-like lines and when Wendy aims for a brighter tone she sounds pretty similar to Seulgi. Other than that they all have pretty damn distinct tones, especially Joy.

Ikr! Jeongyeon should be given more chances to sing more. Imagine her vocals if she chose SM during her trainee days
colour me surprised, this is the first time I'm hearing someone say that there isn't a vocal variety in RV :o So many times, I hear how different their voices are from eachother haha. I won't lie though there are times when even Luvies confuse their voices. But there are 2 groups in Rv, Non-nasal and Nasal. The Nasal group is Seulgi, Yeri, and Joy, with Joy being the least nasal, and the Non-nasal group is Wendy and Irene, but sometimes they can be very slightly nasality, it's not always pleasant. That's why even Irene and Wendy can sound the same in their lower and upper register. But the nasal group all sound completely different from eachother, cause they all have different placements so their nasality is different. Yeri's voice is like placed behind her head, so it's really hard for her to project and her nose sounds blocked like she's singing from her nose, Joy's voice is placed like ontop of her head so it's very bright and light and shaky, while Seulgi's is also like behind her nose, and she has a lot of tongue tension. But yeah I don't see anyone confuse Joy, Yeri, or Seulgi. But I have noticed that Wendy can actually sound like any of them. When she sings in her lower register, ppl confuse it for Yeri or Irene or Seulgi, and when she sings in her high register with a diff tone, ppl confuse her for Seulgi or Joy, haha she really is a vocal chameleon.

I actually agree with the video. As a casual listener of Red Velvet, the only voice I can distinguish is Wendy's and sometimes Seulgi's. I used to think I had Irene down, then it turned out she's not the only one that raps lmao.

First of all, I enjoyed this video and agree with majority of your points honestly. I love how you highlighted Byul's vocals. Most who review Mamamoo on youtube really only talk about her rapping. I'm mostly Hwasa biased, but I do enjoy Byul's singing voice because it's very velvety when she sings longer parts. I think with Red Velvet they started evening out Seulgi and Wendy's parts when it comes to vocal difficulty, so Wendy wouldn't have to push her voice in every single performance. Plus in cases where Wendy couldn't perform Seulgi can cover her most vocally challenging parts. I'd say Red Velvet's voices that have the most "character" are Joy, Yeri and Seulgi (when she sings in her upper register).
Seulgi and Joy did really well covering Wendy's parts that they could, but there's only so much they can do. Wendy's "most vocally challenging parts" are still left being played in the background in their concerts though. There's a reason they didn't perform Zimzalabim while she was on her haitus. There was a lot of sustained belts and head voice adlibs that they just let play in the background during the concert cause they would injure their vocal chords if they were to cover them cause there's clearly a gap in technique. But Seulgi as a lead vocalist is very impressive that she's on the same level as many main vocalists nowadays and she clearly holds her own in RV, but Wendy's level is just different.

You're absolutely right, there are simply just some songs that Seul/joy can't handle or cover her parts especially with no vocal backing. Wendy truly is a vocal beast wrapped up in a smol body lmao.

Everyone's voice in RV is very nice for me except Yeri... She sounds annoying.... Her talking voice is much deeper.
Itzy biggest strenght i think is confidence, they are not the best singers, Lia the main vocalist is kinda shallow, but they are not afraid to show people their vocals, they are really amazing for a group that is still kinda new, Lia and Yeji have a lot of potential

People were saying that Jisoo was a bad dancer and that Jin and RM were also bad dancers but now they praise their dancing skills and also theislr vocals seeing how much they've improved after so many years. Lia is undeniably using less energy than others but as time goes by you will grow to accept her adorableness and see that she's trying to get better and better day after day.

The fact that RV members sounds the same is mainly because of their vocal training, it's also the reason why RV sounds the best when singing together or how SM groups are the best in harmonizing. Plus it's very common in SME groups especially in their vocal line to somehow sound the same an example of this is Jessica and Taeyeon from SNSD. This just show how their vocal abilities are somehow similar making them sound the same when singing a specific note. Honestly, I don't think RV has any bad side on their vocals, because each and every members has their own roles whenever they're singing and it shows.
YAS Wendy really deserves the acknowledgement! some ppl think she's not that good and think that her lines are really not that hard, but Seulgi and Joy said when they had to record her lines (there were some they couldn't even record), they almost died and were so exhausted after that they realized how awesome Wendy was and they kept praising her. She really is such a well-rounded vocalist with all her registers being well developed and deserves her title as the "finest main vocalist of the 3rd gen". She's even up there with 2nd gen main vocalists who are much move developed and advanced than the newer gen
I always see you in videos abt Wendy's vocals!! Tbh I don't understand much about singing so I just believe what people with more knowledge say lol but her voice and mostly the emotion she puts into singing really moves me. Wendy is a gem and I think RV fans sleep on the role she plays in their sound a lot.

I'm very worried about itzy vocals. Honestly, jyp dont know how to treat their vocals but in itzy this is very serious. Its sometimes even awkward to see their lives vocals cause their dance are so strong and the music so high that they struggle to sing

A lot of time Seulgi and Wendy both sound similar. Speaks volumes on Seulgi.. Think about when Wendy was out and she had to cover her parts and did it flawlessly.. Seulgi has amazing vocal color and ability that gives her voice the versatility to jump on any part of the song and kill it!!! And let's not skip the fact that we are talking about the main dancer!!! Seulgi deserves her flowers!!

I love mamamoo too, but some of the areas all of the vocalists lack in are agility (sloppy runs with no musical direction) and weak upper register (all sing with a raised larynx above C#5 and none have a developed a connected headvoice).
@@ezzmoslostchild I didnt study voice and I'm just a musician (violin and piano), not a singer. So i wouldn't know abt the raised larynx or connected head voice. I know Solar tends to push her high notes a bit too much and strain her voice and wheein does falsetto a lot (but she has a REALLY nice falsetto so all's well haha). For the runs I'm not sure if you heard some of Wheein's riffs. I think some of them are pretty cool 😁 just to be clear, i'm not looking for argument haha. Just a musical moomoo looking to discuss musical aspects of my fav artists with other ppl :)
Honestly before I couldn't see what people used to say about Jeongyeon being better than Nayeon, because #1 I'm not completely a ONCE, so I hadn't seen much of them other than title tracks, #2 Cuz JYP is hiding her talent, so the new fans can barely see it, but once you get more into TWICE music, you watch live performances, solo stuff and etc, then you realize how incredible is Jeongyeon vocally and how unfair is her treatment, not only has a good range, and big potential, she also has a great stability which at least I'm glad people are aware of. Honestly, she is one of those members who really need to make solo content, and to be more pushed, so people can see their talent.

It’s so funny how you had to find something to nitpick on for Mamamoo. I love RV and am also a fan of BP and Itzy. But let’s be Mamamoo is wooooorlds apart in sheer talent as a whole group. I find BP to have incredible stage presence and each member can stand on her own. RV is very flexible in terms of concept and they all have their basics down where they can even cover for the main vocal’s absence (still hate SBS) and main rapper’s. Itzy to me is one of the top 4th gen girl groups if not the best because of their charisma, talent and stability. Twice is the nation’s group- i personally am not a fan but I understand the appeal.
But quite honestly I just want to see a collab between Queen Wendy and the Perfect Child Wheein.
Jeongyeon's voice was always the most impressive for me even before I joined the fandom.
If ya'll ever listened to their bsides you know what I'm talking. Songs like HO! Cry For Me and Alcohol free really lets her vocals shine.

I stand by my statement that RBW is a great company for not limiting their artists and allowing them to explore themselves may it be through art, dance, singing, instruments and even song composition and production.
Yeah thats why RBW dont do that weird position /role thing too seriously either. Consider this If "main vocal" stagnates but another member kept on working on their craft and get better they never get recognized because fans keep harping on "no shes the main vocal position she should get more lines, etc". The company and the fans should be blamed as it stunts the growth of these idols its the equivalent of being typecasted for actors. That system really has to go, its stupid/ artificial and harmful to growth .

I can say that you went easy on each group's weaknesses, except mamamoo, cuz i don't think they have much weakness as a group. But I kinda don't agree with RV's weakness as they are full of varieties. The only example i can say that they sound the same sometimes is when they sing all together, they create a sound that sounds like seulgi or something, or maybe seulgi's voice were just overpowering them by volume that time.
Funny enough if you watch RV's live performances, they usually lower WENDY's mic, they up the volume on Joy's mic, and Seulgi is the one you can hear the clearest. My GUESS is that because Wendy was a trained Accapella singer before joining SM she can naturally belt out loud enough that she overwhelms the mic, and Joy is just too soft without enhancement. In contrast, there are a few live Mamamoo performances where they NEEDED to lower Solar's mic, but didn't and it creates a not-so-smooth sound.

It's painful to watch Jisoo singing du-ddu, she is really uncomfortable there. Jennie has more demands than she can carry on black pink singing and rapping. Sometimes I agree with a friend that says BP needed a 5th member...I just disagree because Jisoo is there without a fair amount of lines
Tbh BLACKPINK doesn't need a 5th member. They need a proper vocal training. 3 out of 4 girls in BP have incredible potential that is currently wasted by YG.

We know Lisa loves performing and that she was made to do this + she loves her fans a lot so I don't think she lost interest and same with Rosé. She is the most passionate with music among the girls so I don't think she lost interest in being an idol. When it comes to Jisoo if she lost interest she wouldn't improve so much for HYLT era. The only person I can think lost interest in being an idol is Jennie. Idk she just feels to like being a model/someone connected with fashion and influencer more.
And yeah I agree that YG is totally wasting them. He holds the most powerful GG in his hands and he doesn't use the opportunities. BLACKPINK deserves better treatment.

Jeongyeon is so vocal skilled, so visual, so talented, I love her, but it makes me angry that from her debut, the company only mistreat her

Now she is on hiatus (again) due to her anxiety disorder, she was back but was told she has to lose weight to comeback, and that made her performances less energetic

About Red Velvet, I do agree that it takes time to pick one voice from the other. For me, Irene, Wendy and Seulgi blend together, and so do Yeri and Joy. But tho Wendy is their greatest vocal strength, I think it's not fair to not acknowledge that all the members can hold their own, and having the members be independent of each other is a huge plus for them.
If only YG realized the potential BLACKPINK holds and actually trained them properly...
These girls would be unstopable if they received a good vocal training and more creative freedom.

@@whimsical5325 From what I know none of them had any vocal background before joining YG except Rosé. She never trained to be a singer, but she saw passionate about music since childhood and she was a self-taught vocalist. The rest of the members (From what I know) started their journey with singing in YG, but even there they didn't receive a proper vocal training.
Their potencial is really crazy, especially Jisoo and Jennie. Jisoo could have one of the best lower register in Kpop if she was well trained, also her upper register, which is really good for a underveloped vocalist. Jennie have this powerful vocal, she could be the most balanced member, good lows, good mixed and okay upper. They definitely are being wasted by YG.
I agree with the Jeongyeon one! When I first got into Twice I didn't really notice her vocal skills and abilities because of the lack of lines. I didn't even know she was in the vocal line. I just hope JYPE gives her justice, she has so much talent and potential to be one of the best kpop singers, sad it isn't rly showcased.

Mamamoo is the best vocal group of kpop and solar is simply one of the best vocalists of kpop along with wendy, her sustainability, resonance, projection are on point, solar is not a vibrato based singer, she really doesn't need it as much cause she has the magic of sustain notes with resonance incredibly well without vibrato, and it's her style, she's a powerhouse singer and she can still very versatile and she deserves credit for that
PS: Wheein doesn't have a very well off vibrato too!

I honestly agree very much with was said especially abt Blackpink and Red Velvet. Sometimes I can't tell the difference between Yeri and Irene and similarly for Blackpink they all have distinct voices but it needs work. There lives personally never sounds the same. Kinda like a hit and miss.
Also, Jeongyeon was surprising to me when I first heard her sing but I don't hear enough of her as I would like. Mamamoo are legends in vocals come on.

I do agree about red velvet vocals being hard to distinguish, it took me an eternity to figure out who's singing, I still have trouble difrenciating between irene and yeri or wendy and seulgi sometimes. I'd love if you made an analysis on the girl group Dreamcatcher. They're EXTREMELY underrated, both in dancing and singing, and they definately deserve more praise for their unique metal/pop style. I mean, Siyeon's vibrato and Yoohyeon's head voice gives me life everytime
When he mentioned Mamamoo's lack of vibrato, being InSomnia, my mind immediately went to Siyeon and Yoohyeon's use of it. I don't know a lot about music or vocals but I think that they can really make their singing more beautiful with that resource.

As a blink, I hope BP members will train more in vocals. I mean, they can really sing live and has talent on it but they are still lacking although Rosé shown signs of improvement. I hope Jennie can support notes in their future comeback cuz she has the biggest potential in the group (despite being the Main Rapper, Jennie once belted into E5 in the studio version which got me impressed so I hope she'll grow more as a vocalist). I hope Jisoo would definitely fix her tonality and she should try to train using mixed voice. Jisoo should also work on her placements. She is stable and really has great potential. As for Lisa, she's a decent singer but with a proper training, of course she'll improve.
BLACKPINK are not the best vocal group or best vocalist individually but they are definitely not the worst vocalists in kpop. And as always, MAMAMOO and RED VELVET's Vocals are UNTOUCHABLE💗

I like Jennie’s vocal timbre. I still cannot forget how she sang her first lines in an encore performance of As If It’s Your Last. Her voice was so round and full but with this really unique tone. That’s when I realized Jennie can sing and that with proper training, she can develop it well.

I can't see Blackpink, the 4 of them taking vocal lessons, honestly I don't think they do, and that's more of YG's fault. When they are recording in the studio there are only producers, who are mostly RAPPERS, you don't see a vocal coach with them in any moment of the behind the scenes, not even in 2NE1 behind the scenes the old days, so there you have it, Jenlisa have learned from amazing rappers and everytime they're getting better in that area, so if you had them learning from the best vocal coaches their improvement would be in another level. Same with any other YG group, except for AKMU and soloists, YG groups usually have a the most iconic rappers in IKON, WINNER, BIGBANG, 2NE1 and BP, but when it comes to vocals you can only mention ''UNIQUE'' vocals, can't talk about ''good technique'' at all
I think Rosé is working with a Vocal Coach now, cuz she improved from LSG to ONT. Jisoo was improving in LSG, maybe she's also working with a vocal coach.

Another problem with twice is the half air half voice technique, jyp really want their idols to sound like them.
Members like Dahyun and Chaeyoung doesn't have a big bright voice, their best registers are actually low, but now when you check predebut and recent years, their voices sound right now kinda airy and weak, especially Dahyun. Dahyun A4 in truth heal me.
Due to that technique Nayeon has become more inconsistent with supported Bb4, i hope they can use a better technique

Mamamoo have such strong vocals which carry the song regardless of whether it is the genre I like or not. That's what I really love about them! The biggest surprise for me initially was Wheein because Solar and Hwasa gave me the impression of powerful voices while Wheein had this sweet doll like vibe to her - while her voice was just magical!!
Then Twice - Before I got into kpop properly all I knew was Likey and I automatically assumed they had cutesy voices 😂 It's only after I've listened to more songs I realised that while Twice may have cute songs their voices are completely different! I honestly love their vocals now! They carry the song too even when I may not vibe with it at first! My favourite vocal moment from them is the Yes or Yes chorus!❤️ The way their voice sounds at that part is beautiful!
Mamamoo was actually the group that opened my ears and eyes to other groups who are not under the big 3.

Jeongyeon doesn't have a deep voice, she has a dramatic high voice (compared to e.g Mina or Nayeon who have a light high voice). Moonbyul does have a deep voice.

Mamamoo and Wendy are on another level. And Itzy is one of a very few 4 Gen group whose sings live even tho they are not vocal bass group. 4 Gen groups are quite disappointing they need to step up their game.
