Buri-nawa Japanese traditional conifer tree climbing ブリ縄木登りテクニック

Before introduction of the American tree climbing, Japanese tree workers have been using a rope and two sticks to climb conifer trees for work. In the mountainous Hida region, we are trying to revive this tradition by organizing workshops. Please note that this is just one of the many Buri-nawa techniques, a variation which we consider as good compromise between efficiency and security. awesome tutorial ! how would you belay and retrieve the top stick if from really high ?

did they used to use a rope to self-belay? Also, not quite sure how he decended? I am new to this, but how would he do it from a great hight with only one rope and two sticks. (truly interested)

it says he is "rappelling" which seems to mean you go down with a double rope . You need some descensor to slow down but it is much easier.

I figure that as far as the descent goes you would basically rapell down to where you could attach the bottom stick in the same fashion as when ascending and basically repeat that process all the way down... Wonder what you'd do if you rapelled to far and used so much rope you couldn't re-attach it though ^^
