    Thx so much for taking your time to post this video. I follow a handful of arborists on TH-cam ...and now you’re one of them. It’s one thing to post a video cutting limb after limb, but the how’s and why’s are more important. Knowing how to tie knots and hitches properly, explaining their uses and application as well as explaining what type of hardware they might be used with is key. That’s what keeps climbers safe!

    Since this is an educational video I think it's important to clarify rope terminology. A hitch connects a rope to an object. A bend connects a rope to another rope. The knot you are calling a double fisherman's bend is really called a Poachers knot(hitch). This is worth being specific about because if you tell someone to look up a double fisherman's bend in a recognized published rope/knot book, or even just to google it, the knot they find will not be the termination knot you've shown. So many people call the Poachers knot a double fisherman's because that's how they were taught it. Let's break the cycle. Not trying to bust your chops, just trying to help make the educational video you're generously spending your time and effort producing as educationy as possible. I like your content... appreciate your contribution.

    • @BinoH

      True the same knots are called by different names in different fields of work. There is a publication named Arborists' Knots for Tree Climbing and Rigging by International Society of Arboriculture and Arbor Master Training that labels the knot you're talking about as a Double Fisherman's Knot also known as a Scafold Knot. Also another good publication is The Tree Climber's Companion by Jeff Jepson where this knot is named the Fisherman's Loop. I had never heard it called the Poachers though. Thanks for the info. and thank you for the comment.

    • @JBullock54
      @JBullock54 2 ปีที่แล้ว

      @@BinoH Yeah I’ve heard it called three different names, but it’s a poachers noose. A scaffold knot has 3 wraps. I understand the fisherman’s loop though, because it’s basically a double overhand loop

      Call it what we will, most important for the tree climber is personal safety and the ability to handle extreme loads when things go awry. Here's a video with scientific evidence why the Double Fisherman's Bend is tops, being able to handle 19kN, 4200LBF or 2000KGF that breaks the rope with the knot hanging in there the entire time - truly impressive and IMO worthy of whatever name implies the highest praise! th-cam.com/video/dagg2-If4h8/w-d-xo.html

    Us Mechanics get sensitive to metal on metal sounds , well some of us anyways. Jiggle jiggle , ahhhhh, great knots, thanks..
    The fear of a knot slipping is real for me as I have had a few fail from slippage and went tumbling. I never want to experience that again. A good non walking nonslipping knot is priceless.
    Thanks a million.

    For the "anchor hitch" it should be tied so you're taking your wraps towards the gate of the carabiner (opposite than done on the video) this puts the load in line with the spine of the carabiner and makes it stronger.

    • @benrcunnyngham
      @benrcunnyngham ปีที่แล้ว +2

      I was going to leave the exact same comment. Might not seem important but it definitely is. Having the standing end load the carabiner not along the spine negates the load rating stamped on them by the manufacturer.

    It is interesting how different rigging professions (and regions) develop cultures and modalities for "terminations." Many of these would...NEVER...be used for a termination in some professions (AMGA, Steeplejacking, Arborist field by region, Tactical, Search and Rescue, etc.) yet are still found in others. From a safety perspective, I see nothing incorrect in this video, just logistically and ergonomically impractical, yet executed well overall...

    Hi. What knot(s) would you recommend to give a fixed "ring" that won't constantly tighten on a rubber loop? Here's my situation: I have a saw case that has a rubber strap with a hole that I want to secure to my accessories loop on my harness. The problem is, the knots in this vid would give a constant stress to the rubber hole once thightened. So, it would be nice if there was a knot that could just tighten but keep a loose "ring" that wont constantly stress that rubber hole. 'Hope that made sense. My other option is to just attach a small carabiner to that hole, then use one of the termination knots in the vid but it'd be nice to minimize accessories so less things to entangle on branches.

    • @BinoH
      @BinoH  2 ปีที่แล้ว +1

      One reason is that some double locking climbing clips have a small ring to tie into and when using an Anchor Hitch two parts of the rope go into the ring. If you use a Double Fisherman's or a Buntline you only need one part of rope.

This has to do with Lanyard connection to my saddle as it relates to my climbing rope(s). I use DRT for recreational tree climbing. Anchor bend/hitch looks wrong to me. If you look at other tutorials you'll see that the working end should stay over the standing end. Doing it that way lets the working end fall more inline with the extra half hitches that back up the basic knot.

    • @BinoH
      @BinoH  4 ปีที่แล้ว

      The Anchor Hitch is tied correctly but the load part of the rope should be on the major axis of the carabiner. When Noah tied the Anchor that is the more proper way to tie it. thanks.

    If you are tying in direct to a harness loop I would not use these knots, as they are very likely to jam up on you. With a karabiner you can open the gate and slide the knot off.
    Whatever knot you tie, you cannot say you have properly learned it, till you can tie AND check it 100 times out of 100 blindfolded.

    • @BinoH
      @BinoH  2 ปีที่แล้ว

      I agree it's not a good idea to tie to a saddle loop. In Tree Care we at the very least tie to a double locking clip because when you are entering a tree most of the time you have to disconnect and reconnect to reach the top. That 100 out of a 100 sound like a good challenge to master. Thank you for sharing!

      Not exactly likely in treework, but the real challenge is to be able to tie the knot you need, without a split seconds thought in an open boat, pitch black and a howling gale. Whatever the job you do, once you get into a dangerous situation, it's amazing how easy it is for your mind to go walkabout ..... too late to learn then
