    this reminds me of one of the first times I ever played goalie for my team. one of the craziest games of my life. we only had enough players show up for 2 extra men, so we were dead tired the whole time, and winning. then our goalie decided to get in a fight with 5 minutes left in the second period. I volunteered to stand in the net with the stick, trapper and blocker, and play it out until we could get to the end of the period. craziest game ever. we actually started to lose our lead by the end, but then buddy from the other team attacked the ref and the police were called and that was that. good times.

    I’ll stop playing and probably watching if the new standard is two blockers. The NHL has to stop messing with the game. There’s enough goals and a nice save is just as exciting as a nice goal.
    They already messed up the record books by awarding the goaltender a win from a shootout win. It should be a tie after OT!

    You're the guy I have a question for.. When I was growing up as a goalie 75/85.. we cut the angles down we stayed up on our skates Of course there were reasons that we went down a deke or in traffic trying to see the shooter in a screen.. When the puck was in the corner we would hug the post standing. It would cover the whole side Unlike todays goalies covering post on knees causes the the goalie to leave top corner open near there noggin.... Now a goalie on his knees trying to catch a shot to the top corners has to locate and reach up..its quicker for a goalie standing to move left or right with glove or blocker And now you have secondary body parts to back you up Shoulders elbow etc.... I Watch nhl goalies game after game giving up goals on ave. 2 a game just being in the wrong position on their knees... May I ask when did this kneeling position become state-of-the-art norm.....ty .. Sit back and watch a few games and and it'll blow your mind..love your show... ps. I know back in my time seventies and eighties there was the other extreme goalie the floppers gerry cheevers Eddie G etc.. If you are lucky enough to be able to be consistent as a flopper It was exceptable by management. But the majority of goalies couldn't handle that type of style....

    If they are really serious about creating more goals, they should reduce the height of the thigh rise on the top of the pads, and eliminate the thick landing pad on the medial knee side of the pads. I quit playing in 2001 due to age. My pads were typical for the mid-90’s; they had a protective pad on the medial side of each knee, but you couldn’t close the 5-hole and slide laterally like goalies can now. Watch games in the 1990’s and see how goalies had to play, compared to how they play now.

    You are braver than me. I would totally have the blocker facing the wrong way. My muscle memory is set to present the inside of my left arm in most daily situations.
    At the 2:50 mark you mention the "old school instinct" to move the body out of the way; not sure I agree. Unless you're deliberately going for a windmill-type save, if a goalie has to move their body away to get the glove into position, I'd suggest that their C/A is too bulky and doesn't fit right.
    At 3:36, as you move left, it looks like you're opening your blocker up and exposing your palm before the shot was taken, like you would with a trapper.
    As for the NHL's approach to handcuffing goalies, before we get to 2 blockers, I think they might opt for a modified trapper that can't close (like Lundqvist's) paired with a shallower pocket--that would allow easy covering of the puck but would also create more rebounds if the trapper's face were more rigid and it doesn't require re-raining the catching arm muscles.
    Finally, you are able to talk way more coherently during a game than I can. Thanks for the interesting video.

    • @VOGoalie
      @VOGoalie  5 ปีที่แล้ว

      Great points as always! Interesting with trapper modification. That'd be one way to do it!
      One thing I wanted to touch upon that didn't make it into the video was body mechanics and range of motion with regards to how we utilize our different gloves. And also the effects of blocking vs reacting. For me personally, I still struggle with that "moving my body out of the way" to get my hands on shots (as a grew up with no formal training). But all of that could be a whole different video!
      It's funny with exposing my palm, I deliberately kept my solo blocker hand in a fist in an attempt to disrupt my muscle memory. It actually worked out pretty well as I think there was only 1 or 2 times I caught myself turning my palm out!
      As always, thanks for your thoughtful insights!

    Interesting theory... As for NHL Scoring, LEAVE THE GOALIE ALONE! More shots should lead to more scoring. I've been saying for YEARS, add a SHOT CLOCK to the game. Once in the offensive zone, it counts down. Would force more shots, maybe not so much time wasted in the zone looking for that perfect shot.....

      That sounds terrible. Players have enough to worry about while on the attack. Plus goalies would cheat for the shot more way more. Teams also rarely stay in the offensive zone for more than 20 seconds anyway. The game isnt broken or needs to be fixed.

    • @johnnyrc9304
      @johnnyrc9304 5 ปีที่แล้ว

      I agree with some of your points Zach Bell, the game isn't broken, and if they left it alone, I'd be fine with it. However, that colossal DB Bettman insists on keeping up changes. With that in mind I suggest a shot clock. Changes to goalie equipment have not had the desired effect, and I believe further changes would not create said changes. I think the shot clock should be 15 or 20 seconds. The theory being it would put an end to the ceaseless cycling and searching for the perfect setup. There would be A LOT more shots on the goal with scrums for rebounds. A built in sense of urgency. As a goalie, it sounds like hell honestly, but the game overall would be more exciting IMO if the theory pans out.

    Ringette goalies sometimes wear two blockers. I prefer wearing a catching glove, but I throw the ring with my blocker hand by whipping my stick under my catching arm and picking it. You get used to grabbing with a blocker since you don’t freeze the ring, you have to throw it

  • @blake6992
    @blake6992 5 ปีที่แล้ว +4

    In my opinion (as a goalie) I feel like it is a safety hazard to have two blockers. When you try and freeze the puck with your hand, it will be completely exposed to hacks and slashes. It is what forwards are supposed to do. But just think of how many broken hands there will be every year when people are hacking at an unprotected hand. They would have to make a big change to the design for it to work.

    I tried two blockers as well, but I would put it forward to cut the angle, just as I would with a catch glove. But in order to keep to square to the puck, I had to bend my wrist in an unnatural way, and it was not comfortable at all. Ended up returning to a normal set up real quick.

    If anything make the leg pads narrower. Huge pads where 6’5 goalies just slide around on ice and block shots is ridiculous. Narrow leg pads and force them to skate. Chest protector should avoid injury and reduce pain but otherwise be very taught. A max jersey size should accompany chest protector. Same thing, trapper should prevent injury not be any bigger than that.

    The one glove save is often what triggers the desire to be a goalie in the 6-7 year old kid that tries it for the first time. My goalie son that’s bantam still remembers that one glove save he made when he put on the pads for the first time at 7.
    Also players have so any opportunities to be creative and make plays and goals worthy of highlight reels and big celebrations. The nice glove save is often the only way for goalies to show off a little and get crowd reactions. I think it’s important to keep that.

    In my opinion (and maybe Im biased because I’m a goalie and think shutouts are the most exciting) but high scoring games get really boring really fast! I just watched a Midget A state final and it got to 5-0 in the first period! That effected pace of play SO MUCH. The losing team was out of it, they all quit trying, and the winning team let off the gas so not to run up the score. My beer league game was more exciting!
    I could also see 2 blockers leading to more injuries for defense and goalies alike, mostly goalies. With added rebounds, there will be more scrambles in front of the net which leads to pushing a shoving and usually someone being pushed on to the tendy. Ask Rask about that.... or really any goalie...
    Stop punishing goalies for getting better at stopping the puck. Maybe it’s not the one stopping the puck.... Maybe, just maybe, it’s the ones shooting it?

    Also means more rebounds which means tired players and more bad line changes both leading to more mental mistakes that would lead to more goals. Could probably lead to more icings as well.

    Do you find it distracting when you film yourself and talk through a game. You seem pretty focused on game and with the talking to us during video. Im very impressed.
    I actually have an mp3 player and earbuds i put in my helmet so during games that i cant get my head in the game, i turn up the tunes and helps me relax.

      Thanks for asking! I've actually been working on this for a while now. When I first started, there was no way I could talk and focus on the game at the same time. And even now, if the play is intense and my puck focus is high, it's challenging. As this was a fairly relaxed skate, it was easier for me to do both.

    The NHL doesn’t have a scoring problem. The fanbase and the NHL are simply unwilling to accept that goaltending is an athletic position now. Goalies should not be penalized by the league for their skill, you don’t see people saying “let’s take away Connor McDavid’s stick and make him play with a mini-stick, to make the league more fair”.

    • @brandontrost8888
      @brandontrost8888 5 ปีที่แล้ว

      The counterargument to this is probably that Gretzky without the benefit of any modern sports science (so using the same 1980s workouts/diet, and playing pretty much the same way he did back then) would still be a top center in the NHL.
      Meanwhile the best goalie from the 1980s would most likely make it to the AHL at best without a totally new technique.
      Also, making McDavid play with a mini-stick would be an unfair comparison. More accurate would be making him play with a WOODEN stick. You know, exactly like the MLB does in pro baseball. So there's actually a precedent to making athletes use inferior equipment in pro sports, and that is all the NHL has done to goalies this season: Making them use pads that are normal sized pre 2000s.

    More scoring? Call more penalties, and hand out harsher punishments for dangerous plays. That'll cut down on concussions, and either increase the number of powerplays, or increase the speed of the game. To me it seems obvious, yet the NHL seems determined to keep stripping goalies of more and more equipment.

    • @VOGoalie
      @VOGoalie  5 ปีที่แล้ว

      I totally agree and think there are other ways to promote scoring and/or a faster paced game. It's just easier to target goalie equipment. And as it has historically been done in the past, there's even less barrier now.

    awsome video. IT would definately be awkward to have to wear 2 blockers, i say to the "scoring problem" its up to the players to get better and find better ways to score, another thing too is that the nhl has evolved defensive strategies so much over the years , that has lead to the lower scoring in todays game,

    • @VOGoalie

    you mentioned having a medical condition limiting your play... i myself have a medical condition too, i started out playing goalie playing standard stick in right hand and glove in left... but in 2004 i was injured in Iraq giving me problems and loss of range of moment in my left arm, so when playing goalie it left my whole left side wide open, so i went to full right with my blocker and stick in my left hand and glove in my right and have actually been able to up my game in many ways... better stick handling for one because i play out as a righty so it feels more natural to handle the puck as a full right... also most goalies are not full right so i find them shooting right into my glove side thinking they are going blocker side... it was hard ar first to switch but was able to do it

    I don't know if you still watch for these comments but I'd be afraid of reaching out to catch the puck with an unprotected hand. IMO the stick kind of keeps that blocker in position but without the stick you can easily rotate that hand out to a natural catching position, which would be bad even on the weakest of shots. Watching this video is going to give me nightmares.

  • @thomasspeed3390
    @thomasspeed3390 5 ปีที่แล้ว

    Im trying to figure out what the nhl is after. No one likes a breakaway-fest. The last team with the puck should not be the winner. It sucks because goaltending is a major part of the game. It seems like if they really want more goals (stupid idea anyway) increase the size of the net or make the scoring zone an arc to increase the challenge to cover. We should be finding a way to improve the capability of the tools not make it more difficult. Finally, it should be hard to get a goal. That way, there's something worth celebrating

    • @VOGoalie
      @VOGoalie  5 ปีที่แล้ว

      Thanks for your comment! I think the NHL has plateaued with how they can "increase" scoring. My personal opinion would be to move to Olympic size rinks, but that will never fly. It's like mobile phones, there were huge advances then they peaked and now any changes are small by comparison.

    • @thomasspeed3390
      @thomasspeed3390 5 ปีที่แล้ว

      I don't know if making it bigger would help. Making it smaller would create a challenge. I don't know if you have ever done a 3v3 on 1/3 ice, but it is intense. Exhausting but intense.

    • @VOGoalie

    • @inlinetoice
      @inlinetoice 5 ปีที่แล้ว

      VOGoalie ok, I commented on your last video when you unboxed the blocker. I just bought the g3 sr leg pads and the g3 pro blocker. Just wanted to get your input on the difference between the two. I have the g4 sr catcher and really like it, I got the g3 gear just because I needed new gear and it’s what I could afford if I wanted new pads and blocker. Keep the videos coming it’s always good information for us goalies out there. It was your videos and one other guys videos that got me to go with warrior gear.

    • @VOGoalie

      The G3 line is also great! When looking at Warriors latest lines, the G3 was the biggest leap in improvements over the G2. And actually, I could probably just swap out a G4 blocker palm in my G3 and that would suit my preferences!
