Andrew Hammond. A career minor league goaltender who one season put up a 20-1 record dragging the Senators into the playoffs. Then kinda disappeared into obscurity.

He actually played playoff games for the avalanche a few years later and did pretty well lol. He then bounced around the league, playing games for Minnesota’s affiliate in Iowa, he played a couple games for the habs last season (those ones were my favourite), and he finished his career with New Jersey this past season after announcing his retirement.
      His career stats:
      67 GP
      31-20-7
      .917 SV%
      Playoffs
      5 GP
      1-4-0

Pierre Turgeon right up there with Alexander Mogilny when it comes to glaring H.O.F omissions.. It makes zero sense aside from personal pettiness from members of the voting committee.
I was done with the H.O.F after they callously waited until Pat Burns passed away before inducting him. They had several opportunities to do so while he was still alive.
Hopefully Pierre & Alex get their moment some day soon.

I grew up on hockey, but have recently come to realize what utter dogshit the culture of the sport is. "Oh you didn't participate in a brawl as a teenager? BANNED FORVER YOU FUCKING COWARD!"

Dude, Theoren Fleury got arteries in his left arm severed and missed a year when he was like nine or ten. His parents were alcoholics/addicted to prescription drugs. He was sexually abused when he was a teenager. He was never supposed to make it besides all of that heaped on him and was "too small" for the NHL to begin with. Yet, he's in the top seventy all-time in points and may be pound for pound and inch for inch one of the best players all-time. His NHL record of three short handed goals and his plus nine game never get talked about either. The last four years of his career or so were about as bizarre as it gets too.

Turgeon never played for tem Canada again because it was so stacked at the center position. Gretzky, Lemeiux, Sakic, Neiwendyke, Lindros, Messier, Francis, Linden, and Hawerchuck were the choices for team Canada at center. Who do you bump to put Turgeon in? He also had a reputation of being frail. He didn't get to play for them because of all the Hall of Famers who were available and much better. It wasn't because team Canada hated him. Turgeon was good but not great.

I understand he was ambidextrous and could catch with either hand and shoot both right & left. It must have helped, because he won six Vezina Trophies in a seven year career. Similar to Pat Verbeek, but in baseball, Carlos May had part of a thumb blown off by a mortar in an off-season accident while training in the National Guard, but was able to continue his career. In terms of his undrafted status and later NHL success, I'd really compare Marchment to Alex Burrows as the two most unlikely NHL success stories, assuming Marchment can keep it up. Burrows though has a leg up, he spent wayyy more time in the ECHL than Marchment, who was moreso an AHLer before making it in the NHL. 900+ games for Burrows and some playoff magic doesn't hurt either.

I was never much of a fan of Pierre Turgeon. In fact, I thought he was kind of a little too soft. But for Hockey Canada to ban him from international competition just because he didn't get involved in that massive scrap between the Russians and Team Canada in the WJC's in '87 is just flat out stupid on their part. And if that's what's also keeping him out of the HHOF? Well, that makes it even more stupid. Like I said, not much of a fan of his. But he was a very good player, and should indeed been elected to the Hall already.

Bill Durnan used two gloves for his career starting in I think 1932 or 33 for the Bruins. I'm not sure about the year but I'm close. He was ambidextrous and was one of the best goalies of all time. He would switch his stick from glove to glove on breakaways to confuse players. I'm pretty sure that he won a Vezina in his career too. The man was incredible.

    • @sportsnstuff5557
      @sportsnstuff5557 ปีที่แล้ว

you're close, but slightly off. durnan played 7 seasons for the Canadians during the 40s, and he won 6 vezina trophies in those 7 years, and got 2 stanley cups during those years. he was ridiculously good though

A big reason there was less goals and “better goalies” back then was more to do with how defensive the game was back then compared to now! It’s not like goalies are worse now, they are actually better but it’ll be hard to beat old goalie achievements in todays high scoring high offence game!

You call it petty but I call Turgeon a bad teammate. Canada always has plenty of great players to choose from. Why would they want someone on the team who has nobody's back and the players couldn't respect. All he had to do was jump on the ice and grab someone. Sitting on the bench was his own undoing. If you really think it's petty, you don't know hockey like you think you do. Players need to be able to trust their teammates. Turgeon proved he couldn't be counted on or trusted. It's that simple.
