I'm an old goalie. These days I'm relegated to mostly emergency goalie duties the last couple of seasons and the last game wasn't pretty. The usual goalie couldn't be there and I only had 2 hours of notice until puck drop ! Although we only lost 5-4 and the winning goal was scored by my own d-man, this could've all been prevented if I was able to have my "fail safes" in place with the proper "mental preparedness" check list done.
I blamed it all on the fact that I wasn't wearing the proper "lucky underwear". Another major factor was that I wasn't at the rink early enough to properly introduce myself to the goal posts. Most importantly I didn't have the time to properly prepare myself so I didn't have my tiny container of "lucky deer hair" from the stuffing of my first pair of brown leather goalie pads that I ever owned back in the 1980's. This is what happens when you are forced to break with tradition and get thrown to the wolves by your cousin.
No one except goalies know the plight and weight we carry around with us everyday as we just try to live life among the non goalies of this world. They do not understand that there's a lot more to being a goalie than just stepping over the red and blue lines and being able to carry on a conversation by yourself.

Thanks for sharing! Great points and I think that in today's age of technology, being able to have online platforms where other goalies can connect with each other is a great way to know that we're not alone! Pre-internet, I didn't really know that many goalies, let alone have an outlet to help process what it means to play goal. Thanks for your comment!

We all, well all goalies, have our pre-game rituals. One of mine (I’m not alone, Patrick Roy did this too) is that I always put on my gear in the same order every time. Left knee pad, right knee pad, cup, pants, left skate, right skate, left pad, right pad, (pause to stretch and settle into my pads), neck guard, chest/arm, sweater, pick up my catch glove, blocker, water bottle into my glove, glove on, mask, stick. If at any point I do anything out of order, I go back and start over again. Some of my team mates have commented when this happens but it’s about mental preparation just like every pre-game ritual we have. Cheers.

    • @ilyazhitomirskiy9218
      @ilyazhitomirskiy9218 2 ปีที่แล้ว

I have a similar routine. The only difference is that I put my right pad on before my left pad, and strap my right pad before my left pad. With knee pads, I would put the right knee pad on before the left one. I stretch in a specific way, carry my water in the trapper, and tap my posts before the start of each period.

I think a lot of what I did when I still played-- back when I was a young dude-- was a lot of what I heard pro's did. Junk like left side first, tap the posts, sleeping with sticks. Everyday stuff. There were one or two weird things that I did that probably very few did, now that I think about it, but I'm trying to maintain some degree of online professionalism these days. :)

    Weird things I do:
Talk to my post and crossbar
Arrive way before all my team mates to the rink
    Kiss my pads, glove, blocker
Tap my Post & Crossbar a million times before each faceoff
Salute my net before every period
Jump over opposing teams locker room before games when I pass it
Talk to myself before a game
NEVER WEAR KNEE PROTECTION OTHER THAN THE ONE'S IN THE PADS
    I think that's all.

For the most part I am not superstitious but I do look for a tell on game day. I was washing dishes before a late game once and a cup dropped off the counter, I caught it before it hit the floor, the game was pretty much over at that point because I felt invincible and had a 35 shot shut out in a 1 - 0 win (lost to the same team in the playoffs a month later 0 -1 so their goalie got me back). It was all in the mind set and a little thing that gave me confidence before I ever hit the rink changed mine for a positive. And you are right, we do get hit in the head a lot.

  • @joshuadoxen7586
    @joshuadoxen7586 ปีที่แล้ว +4

As you mentioned, goalies see the game fundamentally differently than skaters. It's like you're constantly working out the geometry, and probability of every play...all the time, which skaters don't have to do.
I mentally replay plays and goals on several levels to see which parts I need for the future, and which parts I need to let go of so that I can keep focused.
Goalies are weird. At least skaters usually leave us alone so that we can focus on doing whatever we have to do to stop the puck.

Nobody knows what I’ll do, for example on some breakaways I’ve gone into the “Karate Kid” pose (almost always works). Depending on the shooter, I’ll tell the defense “if so & so is shooting a slapper, get out of the way, you don’t have the equipment for it”. Not quite Billy Smith or Ron Hextall, but old school (you hit me you’ll get hit, you rub you’ll get RUBBED, you run me you’ll get checked, with extra sauce) Most people won’t go in the corners or behind the net when I play the puck there, I wonder why.

Am I really crazy? I thought I was...my mask says Maineiac (I play in Maine). The players think I am...they call me maniac and &#@% crazy! Now, based on this well-presented scientific research, I am not sure. However, considering my track record and the physical evidence on the ice and on X-rays, I still recommend that you play assuming I am. Plus, since this video came from another goalie and was found on the Internet, I guess we’ll never know for sure.

if your not at the rink at least a full 24 hours before your game your not even trying
Like I mean bringing a bed, and that novice practice at 7:00am where some soccer mom called security on you is your game day morning practice, and finally that 10:00am free skate for little kids where you payed the skate patrol guy 15$ to let you go on in full gear is actually you’re backup game day morning skate after you got escorted out by security at the novice practice. Doing this for every game is how you go pro, trust me

  • @jasontryon8621

Short answer, yes we are, because we have to have a different mindset to play the position we do. I always arrive early (at least an hour before game time,) and my pre game ritual is ALWAYS the same from the music I listen to on the way, to the meal that I eat pregame to how I stretch to how I put on my gear and how I do warmup. It’s not superstition, it’s about getting me mentally prepared to play.
In game, I do NOT go to the bench during the game unless there’s a penalty being called. I don’t go to the bench between periods. I just go down to the other goal get a drink and skate from crease to corner back to crease to the other corner and back. Again it’s all about the mental space I don’t want anything taking me out of my mental space for playing. Also, right before the period starts I always to the same thing. Focus on the other net, go down to do a groin stretch, while I’m down there I do three repetitions of the eye movement exercises that Braden Holtby does, then more stretching, and I’m ready for the next period. Again, mental space.
On a goal, I skate to the corner on the side the goal was scored from and back to the crease to cleanse that goal out of my mind.
Just my personal quirks, your mileage may of course vary.
    Cheers.

I talk to my posts, have the exact same pre game and tap my posts every single 5 seconds if the pucks in the other zone or I’ll tap super speed when the pucks coming to my zone, also it’s gonna mess up my game if I’m not singing all game screaming randomly again talking to my posts. My other goalie on my team and I sword fight during practice when it’s a player drill and our shooting coach isn’t there. We probably should work on positioning but no

Arrive early, lay out gear, stretch, stretch again, check the board 9 times to make sure i'm here on the right day and in the right locker room, stretch again, watch earlier game, stretch again, start dressing - *** very important *** - left skate and left pad first. stretch with gear on, back up stick at the end of the bench by the penalty box, DUDE, WE"RE WEIRD. I'm just getting started, we are screwed in the head. It takes a special kind of nut bag to pick this job BUT - there is nothing better than having some hot dog winger skate back to the bench shaking his head in disbelief

I cried after making my first b-grade shutout. Was number 4 draft pick and had been with the team for 2 years. My dad had attended every game i had played so far. He missed this game due to work and it was my second shutout in 3 years. I think a lot of goalies would feel the same to get that monkey off their back (and obviously my dad missing it played a big part)
Captain of the team ridiculed me for crying and said i was "being selfish" for celebrating my own accomplishment "instead of the teams win" (i mean, its a win, of course i celebrated it...)
Was splitting the goalie duties that season which i was ok with, however, got annoyed that i didnt play 1 playoff game that year despite the team getting swept in the finals.
Also kept getting made fun of for ordering custom white/pink gear, supporting breast cancer awareness, but it didnt matter cause it was pink.
End of the season, told them to shove their backup duties, left the team and had success elsewhere

I just got my first hockey goalie gears and can't wait for winter to try them out on ice. Anyway I'm playing goalie in floorball and mentality stuff checks out. I've always wanted to be goalie no matter what sports. It just fits my personality very well. I'm part of the team but in a way I'm still on my own and I don't have to deal with any drama. At the end of the day all I have to do is stop the puck / ball / whatever and if I can do that it doesn't matter how I managed to do it :D It's very simple task for very simple man :D

I also believe almost all goalies have adhd. I coached for a few years for The Goalie Club and my towns association and almost every goalie i met had a.d.d. or a.d.h.d. including myself. I have been diagnosed since age 12 so i can recognize it easily because i know exactly what i was like as a kid so when i see someone doing all the things i did its pretty easy to tell haha.

    My weird things:
Arrive about an hour before puck drop (used to always be first, but lately guys have been super early fro pregame beers)
Have a specific corner in the dressing room and take up way too much space
Only take exactly 3 or 5 shots in warmups
Go for small skates around the dots between whistles and make weird faces while doing so (I really don't know why)
Tap crossbar with butt end of stick when play approaches our end (three times on breakways)
Do this thing where I stretch both my arms forward and then settle into my stance on faceoffs in my end
If my team wins I don't wash my uniform (jersey and socks), if we lose I won't wear my uniform until I wash it and I will swap to my other stick next game

My tendencies that teammates usually notice.
    1. Early to arrive. Late to leave.
    2. After strapping on the pad, I often pound the center "rebound" area, intentionally making noise.
    3. When the puck is not my zone my arms are resting on the top of the posts. I actually really need to stop this habit. It causes unnecessary wear on my glove and blocker. Some red paint also gets on the shaft of my stick too.
    4. On in zone face offs I stand flush to the post, stare at the ground, do a standing recovery push into position, and then look up at the ref. This one is more about the ref than me actually. I use this pattern to make sure the ref is actually paying attention to me.

Thanks for your comment! Great point about interacting with the ref on a defensive zone face-off! So many times I've had the puck dropped before I can get my heels off the goal line!

Bro I take a shot in the face as I think it helps with not being scared of the puck I lost 4 teeth when I took a shot to the face, now I face me being afraid by having someone head hunt me a couple times. I also do 20 push ups per quarter as I feel more loose after, I circle my net as I think it gives me a better look to my surroundings though I have been goalie for 2 years, still got a long way to go. I improve the past season so let's see how good I do this season. #hockeytime!

28 years as a goalie: NO ONE was to speak to me from the time I get into the room to the time I put my left foot (ALWAYS FIRST) on the ice. I would get very, very angry if this wasn't respected. I tape my stick with new, fresh white tape when I'm half-way dressed. If anything got on it, I would remove the tape and do it again. I ALWAYS put the left side piece of equipment on first, so left leg, left arm etc. I also hated it when someone touched my stuff, especially my stick. I had to have a half Kit-Kat before the game and the other half after. It was so important to me that if I couldn't get one, I wouldn't play. Basically, I was Gilles Gratton levels of odd. Gratoony the Loony, indeed.

We are are a very strange bunch!!!! I was a right winger for the first years of my life. In 72 I started playing goal and we won the championship and won the MVP. I always show up 2 hours early before everyone else. LOL When I was playing Senior hockey I was a crafty BASTARD!!! I could get away with a lot of stuff just by a subtle move. Also I still try pushing the envelope in every game, sometimes I get away with it sometimes ,not so lucky!! But I always respect the refs!!! And after a game I thank them and tell them ..... Well I had to try!!! We always have a laugh about it!!

    OMG rituals...ok
    1. Listen to Crazy by Seal on the drive before the game...I will actually pullover to get it playing.
    2. Pole to pole slides to get the feel of my blades when I first step into the net, not that snow chopping that looks like you took a dump and need to cover it.
    3. Hang my stick in between the pad and the knee board while play is at the other end, not quite tall enough to Ken Dryden my stick, but always wanted too .
    4. Wet my gloves...I like them damp but not soggy.
    5. Light dinner meal...pasta, burger, taco's....no way.
It's all about the mental part.
And due to my own timeframe, I'm the last guy to get into the locker room, which sucks cause I got to lock the door and carry the key to the bench. And I only live 4 miles from the local rink!
    Thanks for your vids!

I got hit in the cup… hard… during warm ups in a losing streak and we beat 5th place (we were about 9th at the time) team. Next game, other goalie hit me low thinking it was luck… won that game against 3rd place. Tied going against 1st place in 3rd period, walking out, had a defenseman take his stick and rock me in the cup… we won by 3. Unfortunately (yet fortunately) next game I didn’t have it happen and we lost. 20+ years as a goalie and only that position… yeah… we’re weird

I count how many times i have been hit in the head. 2483 im at right now. But i retired about 4 years ago at the age of 21 from competitive play so i don't play nearly as often. I played 10 years competitive hockey as a goalie so i was taking about 200 some shots to the face each year. I also would go out into the hallway before games and do a pre warm up where i would be in my pads without the chest protector and helmet with my headphones in and do basically all the movements you make in a game and also do some saves like a glove or blocker save even though no one was shooting on me. I would do this while listening to slipknot. Then i would pray to my godmother, who wanted me to become a goalie in the first place but died before i dawned the pads, and ask that she please help me make the saves i need to get my team the win. When i was doing the most extensive version of my pregame it turned out great. I also only ate a small lunch or no lunch at all on game days. Also before faceoffs i tap both posts for a total of 7 times. Idk why, I just do. And taping your stick on the post during play is something we coach as being checking your angles. I also would skate to the corner after my team scored a goal during games and tap the boards where a young fan would be sitting. I had broken a stick one game in high school, threw it in the trash can, and 2 younger kids came and grabbed it and asked me to sign it and asked for a picture with me. My record that year because my team was practically all sophomores playing varsity while i was a junior... 5-8-2. With a .893 save percentage and 3.12 goals against average. My goaltending partner who was also a sophomore so since they were all friends they would try harder when he played... 6-9-3. With a .900 save percentage and a 3.01 g.a.a.

Also, last thing because I’m too stubborn to continue because I’ll forget my thought and a goalie after many years of hit to the head and too stubborn and forget my thought… someone pointed out how I’m a “true” goalie because while rushing I strapped half my right side then realized it’s always the left side first, so I unstrapped and did the left side. Because he noticed, I did right side first from then…. I’m not the greatest but I wasn’t bad lol. Needed all the luck I could get

  • @iandalcourt3384
    @iandalcourt3384 4 ปีที่แล้ว

Wow... I never put thought into it but yes... 2 things I do religiously and subconsciously is arrive super early. So much that I’m usually watching the whole first period of the game before us while I wait for our dressing room to open up for us. Extra time to suit up is one reason... but I do a lot of pregame ungeared stretching. This takes even more extra time... but I also like to be first in the room to do this so as I got the room without crowding the boys.
Second is post tapping for position. It’s so much habit that I don’t even realize I do it anymore.
As for talking to your posts... is there even a goalie that exists that doesn’t have that side girlfriend relationship with their posts 😝

I'm a goalie and 26 now and haven''t played much hockey since I was 18. I started subbing for a men's league team lately. Since playing again I've been wondering to myself, what kind of lunatic plays goalie? Goalies are a very interesting breed, in all sports. I'd love to see some research on what kinds of people play goalie because there has to be some sort of underlying psychology that all goalies share that makes them want to be a part from the rest of the team and the last line of defense.

I think that Defense are the real crazy people. They try to block shots with much less equipment than us. What’s wrong with them.

I arrive at least an hour sometimes 2 or 3 before the game, listen to the same songs, eat pretty much the same things, talk to the posts, tap my glove and stick on the post in a certain way before every faceoff, tape my stick the same way, get dressed the same way, wear pretty much the same clothes, and I shake my helmet like a dog when I get shots to the face. Definitely a little odd, but it's fine.🏒😂

I think it helps to be a touch autistic to be a goalie. Normal people don't like to play goal because they get lonely and miss the social interaction of being on the bench, but also they don't have the hyper focus and concentration that you need to always be ready for the shot. It's kind of an autistic trait to have rituals for everything, which goalies usually do.
