Last thing I need is another subscription! Removed my Tesla Homelink module before trade in (that I originally paid $300 for) and brought it to my new Model Y. Easy to program through the gateway and works just fine. No subscription! Getting really tired of monthly FEES.
Tried to do that, made an appt w/Tesla to remove my Homelink from my Model 3 and install in my Model Y but they cancelled saying they won’t allow the swap :\
How is this a hack if you have to pay for it? It's like calling getting Netflix on your TV a hack. No thanks. I'll continue to open my garage from my smart phone for free...
We have MyQ but Tesla wanted $10 per month to activate it . We did try it free for 30 days and it was great, but for $120 a year we opted to continue to use the garage door opener or use MyQ on the phone
It's $45 per year the $120 is for 5 years I believe.
OMG are you telling me Teslas no longer work? My 2018 Model X worked with my Liftmaster. Not the new one now?
Tesla wants a subscription for EVERYTHING! Everyone I know with electric cars don't have to have a dumb subscription for garage doors. Tesla is dated when it comes to this crap.
I’m sorry I think it is Crap that you spend that much money on a car and you have to pay extra just to be able to allow you car to open the garage. Really….come on be better Tesla, stop nickel and dimming on everything.
Plane the people of MyQ and other cloud obsessed third parties. Oh your Volvo or whatever has homelink, that’s why you’re car is 1500 more than it’s probably worth lol.
I don't like the idea of a paid subscription to open my garage when I can do it for free with Home Link or there are third party apps that do it for free, though the integration with the Tesla infotainment is nice. If the car comes with homelink then use that or get it installed I guess.
I'm using my second free trial and really like it. I just cant justify paying for a subscription even though it's not expensive.
I have the myQ app on my phone, a model 3, and a VW Atlas. The 10 bucks a month was not worth it in my opinion. The app on phone is useful as a tertiary garage opener as well as monitoring the garage status. I will stick to pressing the clicker while it's clipped to my sun shade, when my house comes into view, so by the time my car reaches the drive way, the garage is already open for me to roll through.
Mmmm, Kim, you're reminding me of one of my pet peeve complaints: that Tesla no longer includes HomeLink -like it did in my Model 3. It's nice that myQ eliminates the problem of mixed signals when you arrive home. It happens so rarely at our home, however, that I'm not sure its worth it -as I hate subscriptions. Sick of 'em. Oh… unlike you, I like a chime when my garage door is opening. (I close it manually always.) What is confusing is sometimes I'm not sure if it's the garage door chime or the proximity sensor chime. My next EV will have HomeLink included, I can tell you this!
I bought a Kia Sedona 20 years ago for 25k and it came with ability to program and open garage. Dont understand why this technology is not standard on TESLAs
When will the cost become reasonable?
I hate that you need to purchase another subscription to open your garage door. Come on Tesla. So I buy an expensive car and now I need to buy a subscription to open my garage door? So annoying.
Yeah, no.. it's not "flawless".. it works maybe 30% of the times. Been using it for over a year.
I bought the Homelink add-on from Tesla last year right after getting my Model Y. A few months ago I moved into my new Ring connected house with MyQ connected garage included. I feel like I'm just throwing my money away switching to MyQ, but I will try it out for a couple months and see if I like it better. I do agree with you on the aggravation I get when arriving home with the garage door already open and then the Homelink sends the signal and closes the garage door when I'm pulling in.
You should try Remootio 3, my gate and my garage opens even if I'm coming home in a taxi!
@@dragosg1606 interesting! I've never heard of Remootio. I'll look it up. Thanks!
@@dragosg1606I wanted to try that but doubt it will work with my community gate.
I use Tailwind equipment and it works. No subscription needed.
I have myQ works good. Once in awhile it says not connected and won’t close but that’s rare. Cheaper then purchasing that add on option from Tesla.
Using the app for any car and no subscription seems like the better choice here
are you kidding? Let me buy a TV then pay to turn it on. complete waste of money.
😂😂😂😂😂😂😂this comment is epic 😂🎉
lol, just got a model y, went to setup the garage and I thought, surely I am missing something…….
This video is such great timing - I just had a myQ garage door opener installed a few days ago! It's cool to now be able to control it from my phone.
But you need to pay for the Tesla premium connectivity though to make this work still right?
Yes
I don’t have it and it works for me
Is your “DIY” solution to just use the standard software? Great video
I have tried 2 different Teslas at 3 different homes and MyQ has the same problems. The auto close usually delays closing and beeps many times. Also, if the door is closing or opening, you can’t reverse the door with the Tesla/myQ interface but homelink can! It is nice that the car knows if the door is open so it doesn’t close it like homelink. After 4 months, I got a refund and installed homelink. At least homelink works consistently all the time.
You should try Remootio 3, my gate and my garage opens even if I'm coming home in a taxi!
Thanks Kim. This is a great reference video. I’m gonna give it a try
Glad you found it helpful!
Kim - my wife and I love your videos! I have a '21 Model Y and with the recent price drops we just ordered my wife a Model X (too bad we can't do 6 seats with the tax credit). We love seeing your husband more in the videos and being parents ourselves your point of view with families and kids in mind is always great! We have watched for a few years (pre Kim Java days) but always on apple TV - so no like or subscribe, but I pulled out the computer today just to go back and like a bunch of videos and subscribe to the channel. Keep up the great work/content!
Ahh thanks for the kind words and the extra effort to give support to the videos!
Really appreciate your viewership and enjoy the new MX. Agreed, free paint is nice but
6 seater is such a great config.
must type KIM10 capital letters to get the discount but totally worth it $299.00 - $29.90 = $269.10 for 10 years = $2.24/month. Others may not know you don't have to have premium connection from Tesla that costs $99/year. Get a wifi repeater in your garage and have your tesla automatically connect to it when you drive up. (Or if your wifi signal is strong enough then your good).
Excellent video.Answered many of my initial questions. Much appreciated.
We have the remote in the front console - just slide open and hit button. Zero Fees (BTW, I have MyQ and app on my phone). 😂😂😂
Say more about this please. I have a Tesla on order and I pick it up later today. What do you mean "the front council?" (Asuming some sort of software drawer?) And how do I do that? Also, are you sure that's for MyQ and you don't have an older Tesla that came with Homelink built in?
What year is that microphone from?
gotailwind, not perfect and has some issues, but an option... Why were the mirrors open when you pulled in? Ok this looks really nice!
A lot cheaper at $90 for Life! And will work with any phone/car, just needs to be bluetooth or buy a $20 adapter.
Oh, the pain I have gone through with my same lift master and my Tesla, eventually I rebuilt the My Q setup, now it works sometimes, instead of opening as I drive up, I need to drive a few feet down, then it sends the signal to open. Kind of makes it a bit funky as I back into my garage.
Yes I have played with the Tesla setup, set it to 50 feet, the Tesla software seems to perform a count down 50, 40, then 5 then it opens.
Service Center was not helpful.
Im having homelink installed in my Y. I’m not paying $30 for a second smart sensor dingus to act up on me. And I especially don’t want to pay $45/y for it.
Would be better linked to your phone and you could use any car whether it belongs to you or not
It does. That’s what the app allows.
plus phone app is free and does not require subscription
@@ItsKimJava
Now you need a subscription to open up a garage door 😂 I just mount the clicker back of the display with double sided tape or velcros. No subscriptions needed.
MyQ is so overpriced on the Tesla interface. Ridiculous. I can open MyQ it from my phone for free but it's like $159 to do it from my Tesla. And it has an expiration date after which I have to pay again. Kind of insulting TBH.
Kim I like that the Tesla screen shows whether the garage door is open or closed. Personally, as long as my eyes & my finger still work while using Homelink (built into 2018 model 3), I’ll just keep the subscription fee in my pocket. Thanks for the review.
Does the myQ hack work without first installing the Homelink module on the model y?
you can have both at the same time. I have Homelink and activated the myQ 30 free trial and both work just fine. MyQ is much more accurate if you are wanting to do auto open or close. We use our garage door alot- 4 drivers in the house. MyQ knows when the door is open or closed- Homelink doesn't. I'm considering using MyQ. However, it is dependent on wifi and Homelink isn't.
What is NOPE. Not paying monthly or yearly sub to open a garage door. This is completely free if you follow a couple steps and use livekey. And livekey works with any car not just our Tesla. I will never pay chamberlain a fee to do what should be included for free. Bad advice in this video, in my opinion.
some pet peeves is that the auto close most of the time doesn't work but the auto open does....and why do we need to buy a subscription? ...my 2cents
I’ll have to try this because I disabled Homelink that came with my car. My garage door opener has myQ. I had similar problems as you but worse. I had my car in the driveway to perform a software update or wash and then when I pulled into the garage, my car triggered the door to come down.
oh what is that paint wrap color?

For all this cost and hassle I’ll stick with the old fashioned remote. It’s barely bigger than my thumb and works great
I thought to myself 'this is a great way to use the MyQ on my garage door that I never use...' but then I saw the $120/year fee for a service. I'll keep using my trusty little opener for FREE.
Great video! Was wondering if this would also work with an automated gate?
I was told no with gates.
I think if the gate is by Lift Master or Chamberlain then it use MyQ app would work just like garage doors open and closed.
You should try Remootio 3, my gate and my garage opens even if I'm coming home in a taxi!
What do you think about the $41000 drop on model X?
💀☠️
Personally, I cannot stand myq. The fact that they charge a monthly fee for such a simple thing is just the worst to me. I went ahead and installed Homelink myself, which works great from Tesla’s and doesn’t cost me anything.
I kinda like this! Saving your link, and savings code, in my favorites!
Possibly the only thing I'd like to know, is... What if you live/reside with the homeowner and they don't have a myQ compatible vehicle? Do they just need the garage remote while the meQ compatible vehicle owner links it to their vehicle?
Yes
Informative video clutch 💪
Tuya garage opener is much cheaper... Less than$20 and no subscription needed
Thank you
I don’t want software on my garage door. It is always one OTA update from bricking the system. I’ll never connect a television to the internet for this reason. I’ve had software essentially make the television sluggish to change inputs. Sometimes the best solution is the simplest!
Garage door as a service? Hard pass!
Is this still active? What is the promo code?
Should be… see description
I see the same price using your link or without@@ItsKimJava
3:45 - 2021 and newer Model X...this is a software feature. Tesla should not ve restricting it to newer models. Same goes for one pedal driving. There's no sane reason why my 2018 Model X can't have these features.
Probably the wifi antenae on the older X/S is not strong enough or uses wrong bands (N instead of AC/X) to transmit the signal to the home opener unit. I assume the signal is not going through the internet, through the Q server, through internet and to your home wifi - that would be lag central.
@@Tokamak3.1415 interesting. That may be the case. Although, Tesla is restricting a lot of features to newer models although they can be added to pre-2020 models, just to get people to switch to newer models.
wait... you call get the MyQ service a hack? i just have a garage door opener. beat that hack
Do you REALLY think that most Tesla owners are able to park in their garage? Most I know have garages full of junk. Either all their kids (with THEIR kids) have moved back home with mom and pop, or Dad has tons of tools or hobbies filling the space. In my town most are only single car garages, and you'd dent your Tesla even THINKING about squeezing it in there.
I hope MyQ gets relegated to the dustbin of history. Stop promoting subscription based services for things like opening a garage door. You're feeding the beast
Girl. This is NOT a hack. his is a subscription. lmbo
Not available in Australia at present. 😂
I don't want a garage door subscription service.
Dumb. Tesla is behind the times. Asking for subscriptions for garage door openers or extra crap. All my roomies can open the garage in our apartment but my Tesla can't? Bogus.
But you have to pay a subscription. Not good
Great video Kim. Other folks… I just looked at the subscription prices. Y’all complain about $45/yr or $300 for 10yr when you drive a Tesla? My phone has more expensive widgets.
You have to be kidding me!! You have to pay a subscription to open your own garage door!! That is insane. That is like walking into the bank and meeting the teller and they charge you to withdraw your own money. No. This is for insane people.
But hey if you’re going to check your garage door from Kathmandu that’s worth $10. Just think how much it’ll cost you to get your car there from the US anyway. 🤦♂️
Another subscription…ZZZZZZZZ
Give me a break,
I wouldn't care if I had to lift , crank , or didn't have a door.
I'd be happy just to have a garage or a carport or even gravel in my driveway. .
1. Steal a car
2. Set navigation to Home
3. Enter the house
4. Steal everything from the house
1. My car gets stolen
2. Set speed limit to 10mph via the mobile app
3. Report location of car to the police as I can see exactly where they're heading
4. Realise they're heading to my house so jump in an Uber and easily beat them back to mine as they're driving so slowly and grab my weapon of choice ready for their arrival
5. Document whole event on Tesla sentry mode and send the evidence to the police
@@neilkelsey1762 depends who's doing that. It can simply become unavailable to your app.
PIN to drive enabled no car stolen end
@@MultiVfc They can flatbed it but no normal thief would do that - only somebody with a grudge.
If you use Tailwind (with no subscription fee) instead of myQ then you have to have your car AND your phone with you to trigger the garage so if someone steals only 1 they still can’t get in.
Your amazing
This is not a hack at all. This is standard feature of Tesla's. Please don't use incorrect terminology.
Love my Tesla but very disappointed I'd have to buy a new garage door opener, get it installed, and buy a subscription just to open my garage door without a clicker. No thanks.
MyQ is a money grab, I will never recommend it.
Cost $150 for 5 years
I'm sick of subscriptions
Define hack
This was very informative. Thanks!
Wife material❤❤❤
Really? Paying to auto open garage door in 2023 in the most tech advanced car. Screw tesla
