Hello, Is this the same with Thinkpad T440? my W key broke (only the top cover thingy, button still works no problem) and im tired of using external keyboard just because of that. I wanna use my underglowed keyboard :D anyway, what i need to know is, do i just need the "Cap" of the W key, and just press on it to kinda stick it on the actual button like lego, or do i need to replace the ENTIRE keyboard? If I just need the Button cap, can I use the W button cap from other notebook aswell (other than thinkpads) or do i have need exactly Thinkpad T440 Key Cap?
Perfect tutorial on how to handle/replace these rubberdome keys. I used it to (also) physically switch my FN and Ctrl keys on my Thinkpad T16 G1. Worked flawlessly without breaking anything.
Thank you for this. My cat walked across my Backspace key and loosened the top cover off of it, so this was helpful in putting it back together safely without damaging it! :)
@@krixdainsleifperdido6760 The hinge clip? How is it broken? If its just apart in two, it can be put back together. If its actually broken, it needs to be replaced.
Thanks for the instruction video! It was well done, & helpful! My Lenovo W530 "A" key cover popped off. Using the instructions you provided to remove a Key, I checked & put the "S" key cover over the "A" position to see if the clip was damaged. The "S" key popped right on and stayed in place. All I need to do now is order a replacement "A" cover and go from there! Thanks again, Mo-
You just saved my day! A piece of chocolate found its way beside the key and it was stuck. I opened it rather carelessly with a knife and the mechanics jumped out. This worked well for all my earlier notebooks. Fortunately nothing was broken. Putting things together was not that easy. First clipping the mechanics onto the upper metal pins did not work, perhaps I bent the pins during removal or trying to press down the mechanics. But in the end I carefully lifted the lifted pins into position with a screw driver and then I could simply clip it in again. Fazit: Make sure the clips are in the right position before pressing down the mechanics.
Broooooo thank you so much, I had to return a school chromebook when one of the keys stopped working, so I took it of and that still didn't fix it, so I tried putting it back, but I couldn't. You are a life saver.

Thank you very much for this instruction. I searched first in my own language, but the results were full of information garbage and completely on the wrong types of laptops with different keyboards. Then I decided to search in English and found your video. I bought a laptop of the same model range from a local classifieds site (used but in good condition) and after a few days my D key crumbled. It turned out that the carriage was damaged, just in the middle where both parts connect, it was broken off "mustache" (pin). I had to swap with some other key that I use the least. Hi, thanks for the video. I was able to replace the "N" on my son's laptop. This issues doesn't happen all the time and sometimes tapping the "N" will stop the problem. The key does appear to be a little more depressed than the other keys on the keyboard. Is there a way to adjust the key so this issue will stop? Thanks!
If your Key Cap is not clicking down in place correctly, it is most likely due to the Retainer Clip not being properly installed or damaged. Remove the Cap and inspect for damage or that its not laying down flush and properly snapped in itself. Compare to another Clip if needed by removing another Cap.
Thank you - this helpful video explained to me why I broke the plastic clip below the S key (i was trying to clean under it) on my Thinkpad P1 by removing it incorrectly. While replacing it with a new clip though I tried several times unsuccessfully to follow the instruction at 4:00 which is to snap the bottom holes of the clip into the bottom pins first and then the top holes into the top pins. Looking at it through a magnifying glass I realized that the top pins are hooks pointing towards the screen. So I tried it in reverse which was to hook the top holes in the clip around the top hooks and then the bottom holes quickly snapped into place.

So ive tried putting my alt and smaller control keys back on after they snapped off and I've check and they arent broken at all from any pieces but when I try to put it back on (the key cap) how you did and when I try to press down the key they just slide straight off right after, is there any way you could help?
1. Do the keys feel like they are physically fine or do they feel like they have something mechanically wrong with them? 2. Also, did anything happen before this issue appeared? Liquid spill, overheating, Windows update, etc?
Thanks. Is this a product defect, or a know problem with Lenovo product? My laptop has not been dropped, banged, or abused, and yet the C and V keys a popping off, and it looks like the top clips/retainers are busted. If this is a product wide issue, a trending problem with, in my case, X1 Carbon, it seems like Lenovo should be obliged to send the key retainer part.
Keys are pretty cheap non-high-tech parts. They just break sometimes unfortunately. I usually get my keys on Ebay or www.laptopkeys.com/. If you cannot find a loose key for sale, you may have to purchase a keyboard and take a key from there.
Not for that specific model, no :( However, all keys are generally the same. If you get the concept of this video, it should help you remove and / or install any keyboard key. Is there a specific part you would like assistance with?
Thank you for his Video. My T490S had a coffee spill and a couple of keys are not working. Can I use this method to pop the keys off and clean underneath?
Thanks for the video. My function key on my Lenovo T560 popped off (hinge and all). The 2 plastic pieces making up the hing separated. I put them back together and installed the hinge(s). The hinge is locked in at both the top and bottom, but the key is laying flat rather than sticking up. Is it possible the hinge can be installed upside down?
No. The hinge has to be installed correctly and be assembled correctly for the key assembly to work properly. If your Key Cap is not clicking down in place correctly, it is most likely due to the Retainer Clip not being properly installed or damaged. Remove the Cap and inspect for damage or that its not laying down flush and properly snapped in itself. Compare to another Clip if needed by removing another Cap.

My keys ASDF isn't functional and one of the top sound active keys is associated to a different function now.. if I replaced the key do you think it would fix the issue? Thanx
I don't know if you are still checking this but I thought I'd ask for advice. I need to reinstall my space key. I can easily get the 2 metal bars positioned. The top clicks easily but the bottom only clicks to the plastic key in the middle but not at the ends. Any suggestions?
Either the hinge clip is damaged, not orientated correctly, or the metal pins on the keyboard are bent out of place and wont allow it to snap in correctly. Those are the most likely issues
Hey man, firstly, thanks so much for the video. My cat decided to scratch and damage + 4 of the number keys on the right hand side numpad on my Legion 5 Pro. I never use the numpad so it wasn't too big of a deal but I decided to buy replacement keys which also came with spare springs and retainer clips. I had trouble fixing them so I left it hanging for a while. I found your video again and decided to give it a try and it worked for 3 keys. However for one of the keys, the spring actually came off. I'm not sure if I wasn't being careful or because the clip was exposed for months, the glue weakened. What can I do instead? Additionally, I have problems with some other keys as well which being W, Q and D. Those keys are much more important and it was affecting normal use. So I decided to call up Lenovo and since I had a Legion Ultimate support, I was being offered to get a free replacement of the entire keyboard INCLUDING the palmrest (which had gotten dark in some spots due to me resting my palm all the time). Unfortunately, because 4 of my numkeys were damaged, and that falls under user inflicted damage, they couldn't proceed with the keyboard replacement and I was really pissed. If I manage to get my keys fixed (3 are done, just 1 left) and contact them again, do you think its safe to let them do the free replacement for me if they don't remember from before? The keys and clips look pretty much the exact same. I'm not sure if thats a really dumb idea, and I don't wanna get into any legal trouble or get my warranty fully void. Sorry for the long message.
So I have a lenovo Legion, key looks similar to the one on the video, my issue is that the key keeps falling off as I press it, when it comes off I can put back and it snaps into position, but then after a few taps as I type it falls off again... what can I do to fix this?
@@fazolan2943, have you fixed it yet? I have a solution that I have worked for me greatly. First, learn how to remove the key safely, including the clip that stays attached to the key itself. Next, for the key that is bad, remove it and detach it from the plastic that stays attach to it when it comes off. Then, choose another key in your keyboard that you do not use as much. For me, I chose F9. The good key that you chose remove it as well, and also detach the plastic that is attached to the key. Finally, switch those plastics that are attached to those keys and use the good one on the key that you use often, and use the bad one on the key that you chose that you don't use as much, and put the keys back together. I used this method, and I don't even use the F9 key at all, so it hasn't come off. What I do suggest though, is to practice removing it with the bad key before you remove a good key. I really hope this helps.
Great video! What could be wrong if my keys switched places? Example, I press Shift 9 to get ‘)’ instead of ‘(‘ or Shift 7 to get ‘^’ instead of ‘&’. Thank you

what do we do if we’ve broken the really thin plastic on one of the corner holes? should we get a new retainer clip? or is there some way to diy it? my keycap will snap back in, but then come loose again even worse, my thinkpad (e15 gen 4) has a trackpoint and i broke the clip of the h key, so it’s differently shaped than all the other keys and i can’t just swap it out… wondering if i can get a replacement somewhere???

This was close, but not quite, for mine (Thinkpad T480s). The 2 plastic pieces under the key behaved a little differently and needed to be held together then seated EXACTLY at the right spot. The the key on top had a pin on each side that had to be inserted, and THEN the magic press down to click the key into the plastic set and finally attached. Phew!
Which version of the ThinkPad is this? I have a T480 and it doesn't have this kind of keyboard (the whole keyboard comes out). I have a dirty thing underneath my "R" (QWERTY position).
I have a thinkpad E15, I removed my right arrow and now to put it back it goes but when I press down or up it goes as if it's coming off it's not really attached even though I pressed well and everything looks good...

Thank you it worked! I have another problem, the numeric keypads are not working on the right hand side. How to fix it?
1. Do the keys feel like they are physically fine or do they feel like they have something mechanically wrong with them?
2. Also, did anything happen before this issue appeared? Liquid spill, overheating, Windows update, etc?
My e key will be eternally thankful to you good sir

This helped a lot, thanks! (Thinkpad TrackPont Keyboard II)
This helped greatly! Thank you!

Hello, good tutorial. I just have one question ¿do you have any tutorial to help me replace key cap + hinge for Lenovo Thinkbook 14 keyboard?
Not for that specific model, no :( However, all keys are generally the same. If you get the concept of this video, it should help you remove and / or install any keyboard key. Is there a specific part you would like assistance with?
Thank you so much
Worked perfectly!!!

Thank you for his Video.
My T490S had a coffee spill and a couple of keys are not working.
Can I use this method to pop the keys off and clean underneath?
Yes, cleaning under will be a good idea if they feel 'sticky' at all. Hopefully the keyboard or the motherboard was not damaged by the spill !!
WELL THIS LOOKS BETTER VIDEO TO MAKE ME FEEL BETTER CAUSE A LOT OF DESTRUCTIONS IN KEYBOARDS ARE GETTING FIXED
thx :)
Super helpful! Thank you!
Your welcome !! Happy to help :)
Helpful, but my retainer clip separated into two pieces...how can I get it back together?
They fit together with a small plastic pin on the left and right of the inner clip. These fit into holes on the outer clip. To see exactly how the inner clip sits in the outer clip, remove another key cap and copy the clip under it.
Sorry for the long message.
such a life saver thnx man

So I have a lenovo Legion, key looks similar to the one on the video, my issue is that the key keeps falling off as I press it, when it comes off I can put back and it snaps into position, but then after a few taps as I type it falls off again... what can I do to fix this?
im having the same problem
Thank you so much i legit thought i broke my dad's new laptop lol 😭
Glad your all set :) Always here if needed !!
Great video! What could be wrong if my keys switched places? Example, I press Shift 9 to get ‘)’ instead of ‘(‘ or Shift 7 to get ‘^’ instead of ‘&’. Thank you
1. Do the keys feel like there is something physically wrong with them or do they feel like they are mechanically working fine?
2. This video is a tutorial on how to replace a key. If your keys are not working but are not mechanically broken, troubleshoot them as seen here; th-cam.com/video/wqrchfpdJ_w/w-d-xo.html.
Did you do that deliberately? If so, the keys should work as the key that was in the place they're now it (so a Q will work as a T if the Q is put in the T's place)
I have a ThinkBook 15 G3 ACL Laptop - Type 21A4 with a broken shift key, I broke the white thing as well and I don't know where to get a replacement for it or is it maybe even possible to 3D-print and fix that to put my keycap back on and make it able to hold stable
I usually get my keys on Ebay or www.replacementlaptopkeys.com. If you cannot find a loose key for sale, you may have to purchase a keyboard and take a key from there.
Watched the video several times even casted it to my big TV hoping to see better but cant figure it out. My - key above the + popped off by accident and I don't think its broken but I cant figure out which way the two little white plastic pieces fit...
The Retainer Clip came apart in two?
They fit together with a small plastic pin on the left and right of the inner clip. These fit into holes on the outer clip. To see exactly how the inner clip sits in the outer clip, remove another key cap and copy the clip under it.
what do we do if we’ve broken the really thin plastic on one of the corner holes? should we get a new retainer clip? or is there some way to diy it? my keycap will snap back in, but then come loose again
even worse, my thinkpad (e15 gen 4) has a trackpoint and i broke the clip of the h key, so it’s differently shaped than all the other keys and i can’t just swap it out… wondering if i can get a replacement somewhere???
the hole i’ve snapped was on the inner clip, by the way if that helps
@@candylever3838 If any part of the key is damaged or broken, you will have to replace it. I usually get my keys on Ebay or www.replacementlaptopkeys.com. If you cannot find a loose key for sale, you may have to purchase a keyboard and take a key from there.
thank you brother you help me a lot
Great to hear !! Always here to help :):)

Most keys are constructed the same way. The keys should be very similar to this and can be taken off the same way
Thx a lot man, the z key had me stressing😭

I have a thinkpad E15, I removed my right arrow and now to put it back it goes but when I press down or up it goes as if it's coming off it's not really attached even though I pressed well and everything looks good...

Hi im struggling to put the inner part in the outer part in each other as they are in two pieces for me. I've seen another video of yours of doing it but I cant see what your doing in that one. help please
I describe how to do it in the later half of this video: th-cam.com/video/P_U_VzVxgK4/w-d-xo.html
Wish I had seen this video earlier. :( Any idea if I can find key and retainers replacements out there for my Lenovo?

Hey! Thanks for the video! How do I fix a key that keeps popping off if I hit it on the bottom edge? My R key keeps popping off....
Have you removed the key assembly as seen here and inspected for damage or for the need to clean and then tried to reassemble it?
@@PC_Monkey Yes, I closely inspected the key and the PC, both look fine to me, clean and nothing cracked, bent, or snapped, but maybe I'm missing something? Thanks for the reply!

@@PC_Monkey it is damaged. The two screen end loops on the plastic are bent outward compared to the next key over. I've put in a ticket with my company to get it fixed.
