Doug, the kind of guy who calls a car just under 65k reasonable and affordable.
Welcome to 2023
That guy has a Ford GT and a Carrera GT and lives in Southern California. Daddy Doug is too spoiled now 😂.
He means reasonable and affordable for his kids who he gives a monthly allowance of 20K.
It is!
Because of import taxes
The integrated trash can is a really interesting addition. Often we have to find a temporary spot to place little wrappers or other trashy items.
Yeah that's a good idea. A small removable box for papers and wrappers. Surprising that it hasn't already been common.
My 2006 has that factory option
I don't get why all cars don't have a dedicated trash bin like that.
Indeed ingenious!
I can only think of aftermarket ones but they stick like a sore thumb
This thing is being reasonably successful here in Brazil as we don’t have many electric car options. The other car brand which is coming strong is BYD.
What's BYD?
Build Your Dream@@danielvaljin2538
@@danielvaljin2538a blyatiful chinese brand
@@danielvaljin2538 It's a chinese brand. @kyronrc Are they good?
@@danielvaljin2538 BYD is a chinese brand that's investing massively in europe and latin america - Doug has reviewed one of their cars (that's not available in the US but was there for some reason)
Quirks that he missed: there is a bag hook on the glovebox latch- the floor of the trunk hinges and offers bag hooks- the trunk area cover can be flipped over and stowed under the trunk floor- the camera systems are ridiculously nice- the turn signal sound - the seat is your ignition key - the entire infotainment is run by google, and it updates over the air- one pedal driving - firm steering wheel feel - the accelerometer in the dash display - the rear light display when you lock/unlock. Its like he phoned it in? I own this car, and it is right quick.
Most of the same features on my XC40 P8. Great car now, however it wasn't that great the first two years when the system software was buggy. I've basically been Volvos unofficial beta tester on this EV-platform since november 2000.
That's an odd description- I have not had a single glitch with any of the software on mine. Apple Play/Maps/verbal assist - they all work flawlessly.
@@siraryx
Well you own the car, so you've had time to notice all those quirks. This review didn't appear to be "phoned in", at all.
There’s also a hidden credit card holder in the storage space in front of the shifter.
And a pen holder just inside the glove box door.
Surprised he didn’t mention the plastic rocker panels. That was designed to prevent paint chipping from the AWD system throwing rocks or debris into the lower body - an issue plaguing some other EVs with lots of torque.
I also own a C40 Twin Ultimate in the exact Fjord Blue with the blue interior. There’s also the little animation the headlights project when you lock and unlock the cars, though this may only be available with the upgrades LED pixel headlights.
1) At least for the XC40 there's an option to get that carpeting in a bright orange, just in case you find the riiiiiptide bluuuuue a bit pedestrian
2) Having seen quite a few of these on the road here in Norway, I'm convinced that the basic roof line design of the C40 is heavily inspired by the 1950's Volvo 544 "PV"
The orange is no longer available I believe. And it was only for the gas
@@yourlilbrudder5766 That's too bad...I really liked the subtle orange accents on the XC40. These funkier colors tend to be introduced and dropped fairly quickly. It was always a bit odd, but I kind of liked the funky green exterior, as well as orange and blue interiors available on the S60 and V70 Rs in the early 2000s.
@@ryannatividad3137Same. The C30/S40/V50 had some crazy colour options too. I’m sure you could get the C30 with orange or red carpet, and I liked the pale grey interior paired with navy seats the did too. I convinced my dad to buy a totally base model V50 in Gekko Green with tweedy lime green seats, which made him the coolest pensioner on the street.
Love the reference to Hoovie with the Riptide Blue comment.
@@siwynjones Nice! Not sure that they offered some of those bolder color options on the C30/S40/V50 in the US. That said, I do remember seeing the bright redish orange exterior they had the C30 around 2011 or so on a few cars.
Doug is the type of guy to call an SUV "turtle"
Right? Regular boring SUV "coupe" shape we've seen already too many times. Why is this one a turtle?
Doug dreamed about turtles the night before
@@samlepro3because it is shaped exactly like Koopa Shell on the back.
I love the interior. The blue carpet is great. Nice to see colors used in interiors (and exteriors) again. LED elevation map mood lights also look nice. The built-in waste bin is ingenious.
At least the car is cool.
That little clip on the windshield is very practical. I have one in my Saab and use it when I'm required to place a parking receipt on the dashboard, so it doesn't fly away or fall in between the windshield and the base of the dashboard. Apparently, it's a Swedish quirk as most Saabs and Volvos have one.
Every Volvo I’ve had since a 2011 S40 has had that little clip. It’s surprisingly useful.
I enjoy the fact that color matched interiors are making a comeback!
underrated opinion
*coughs* Hyundai Venue Denim
The new improved (2024) C40 has a revised powertrain and thus the range is increased beyond it's competitors. WLTP for the Audi Q4 40 e-tron is 518km/321miles where as the C40 AWD has 547km/340miles, The old C40 has 400-450km range WLTP.
WLTP numbers are a JOKE.
@@MichaelEilersthey aren't a joke of you drive like a sane person
@@Kurre. I own a Polestar 2 dual motor long range; driving like a grandma and cruising gently on the highway downhill at 55, you aren’t getting anywhere NEAR 340 miles. Trust me.
@@MichaelEilers we got 520km from our Volvo xc40 recharge (my 2024) that we rented a few weeks ago :) mostly going between 60-100km/h (I wont bother converting that to freedom units)
@@Kurre. I can lie too, I wiped my ass with 100 pound notes while shagging queen’s coffin this morning, like every day
The new wool-based upholstry option looks pretty sweet as well.
I'd love for cloth to become the luxury fabric again. Leather is hot in the summer, cold in the winter, requires regular conditioning, and doesn't breathe nearly as well. Wool is a fantastic fabric.
I have that wool in my v60. It’s amazing, like a Gentleman’s tailor.
Don't all new mid-sized SUVs look the same? Or is it just me?
Safety standards, effective shape for wind. As we reach optimization there’s really only one shape that works.
LOVE the blue inside and out. Wheels are cool too. I actually think this is a better execution of the "coupe" crossover trend as well. Now, squash it into a true "C" model as a hatchback and we'll really be talking
The car looked cool bro. Like Shelby Mustang 1968.
I'd also add that the regular shape XC40 recharge has a pano roof that opens instead of a fixed, a little dash of extra usability. As a fan of coupe/sportback crossovers though, this one is a pretty sexy turtle.
1:16 Yes indeed. The C40 is just a smaller XC40 with a teardrop design, and you should mention that these cars share almost the exact same features and capabilities. The C40’s exterior design is very plain and simple, I like how it secedes itself from the competition’s rough and angry-looking design styles, although they look fine. The funny thing is that the XC40 Recharge also doesn’t have the startup button visible, but instead it’s the same technique as the C40. The color options are great on this car.
The C40 is more like smaller Citroen C4 also.
I bought one of these a few months ago. I love it. I definitely would have preferred an xc40, but i got a 540/mo lease for a fully kitted c40. The cheapest xc40 lease i got offered was 675 or so. The back window is pretty brutal, but otherwise I much prefer this to my x3m i traded in for it.
My 2005 Chevrolet Malibu Maxx also had that clear plastic ticket holder thing on the windshield. The only time I thought about it was when I was cleaning the inside of the windshield and I'd ram my fingers into it.
I always found it useful to put tickets, etc. on my parent's Volvos. They've been doing it for a while (my parents have a 2005, and had a 1998 until recently) and I always wondered why more manufacturers didn't add that handy little feature. It was nice to be able to add parking permits without having to have it permanently stuck to the windshield blocking the view, and also being able to switch the permit to another car when necessary.
Crazy that a company like Volvo, reknown for its cool wagons, now gives in to the crossover SUV trend, also stopping production of sedans and wagons in the UK, slowly making the legacy obsolete. It's sad to see, considering this is a worldwide phenomenon amongst car manufacturers...
It's not a crossover!
why build something that no one will buy?
Apparently UK people buy SUV
@@srspower What is it then!?
@@adamfry1125 It's just a entry level sized SUV, it's not based on a car which is what crossover means.
Volvo died when they were bought out by the Chinese. Now they just make boring cars with boring engines.

The Volvo's windshield clip still basically usable tho.
I was surprised to see it still being put on new Volvos. I have the clip on my 92’ 240. I’ve used it too!
This car is selling well here in Brazil, along with its XC40 brother. Which is remarkable, since electric cars are still not very accessible here and the charging infrastructure is not the best. After a short period of Volvo dominance, now Chinese electrics from brands such as BYD and GWM are growing in sales. Tesla is still out of the market, we only have a few on the roads because its fans decide to spend money on independent imports. I'd say this car's only flaw is that it doesn't have a sunroof shade.
I guess Doug is back to being 6’4
His height exists in a quantum state, he is simultaneously both 6'3 and 6'4.
Rented one of these the other week and was surprisingly fun to drive - WAY faster than expected, especially at highway speeds. They have pretty good lease deals right now too, believe $400/mo for 24mo is the current deal in socal. Would align perfectly for swapping it our for the new EX30 when it's released.
From what company did you rent this?
@@skippy5311 Turo
Doug didn't really mention it other than the one time, but I'd say the closest thing I've driven to this (power, shape, equipment) would be the Mach-E. Other than styling, these things are almost twins if you compare it to an AWD Mach-E. It's actually weird how similar they are.
Colored interiors are great. My 2002 Alfa Romeo 156 has the blue facelift Momo leather interior and I love it, especially the factory Momo seats!
I can't wait for the EX30 to come out. It's going to be a game-changer for Volvo and EV's in general.
Def not, for the same price u will have atleast 10 diffrent good options in 2024
Particularly in that Moss Yellow color!
@@senoow4215 Around 29-32k... I hope you're right
@@chris-do6nr i am, there already is cars on the same platfrom and specs, like the Smart#1
@@senoow4215 Really? Wow, you must have some insider info that all of us don't because I don't see anything coming out at that price range with these specs.
I actually really like the look of this thing and it seems like it would be great around town. But I refuse to buy an EV until I can get a mid-size SUV with at least 400 miles of AWD range, 0-80% recharge in 30 minutes or less, and has a 0-60 of at most 5 seconds. The price just isn't worth it otherwise. If I'm on a road trip, I want to be able to drive, stop for lunch and charge after 400 miles, then get back on the road and drive another 400 miles and charge at my hotel for the night. Our family does a lot of road trips, especially to remote places like National Parks out west and up into the Canadian rockies.
I would consider lower specs for a much lower price. Something the size of a Subaru Crosstrek would be a great city car for my wife (I work from home), and an EV version with AWD for the snow would be great. But I'm not willing to spend an arm and a leg to get an EV version currently. Especially when her commute is only 15 minutes. Hopefully we see more plugin hybrids on the market in the coming years. I would love that option for my Telluride.
Mid size suv, sub 5 second 0-60, 80% charge in 30 Mins or less, 400 mile range...that's gonna be expensive..
‘It looks like a turtle’. Doug, it looks like every other soulless SUV on the market.
My old Swedish bricks had that parking meter/ticket clip (they're from the 80s!). I LOVE this feature.
Hey Doug you should definitely checkout the early c4 corvettes from the 80s you would love them, they are full of cool features and quirks!
Kinda a weird time to review this one since the 2024 model specs are so much better plus I think it’s weird that you didn’t mention that the interior colors matching the exterior colors are not an option they are forced based on what color you pick. They do the interior based on exterior color and don’t get to customize the interior separately.
Probably not in US, in Europe you can still do it separately.
The range on these has gotten better than EPA estimates after further OTA updates. It's really the 2wd models for 2024 that are much better. Slightly faster L3 charging for 2024 as well.
Voice control in the AAOS Volvos is excellent, you never need to touch the screen
I have this car and I regularly beat the 220 mile range. The torque is intoxicating.
The engines are updated in the facelift, which increases the range! And also increased power 🤠
It's like calling a gas car 'FillItUp'
That little parking ticket clip was on my 2004 V70 R. Some things never change 😁

I just watched this after Doug's Polestar 2 review and came to the conclusion that this is a Polestar 2 disguised as a Turtle 🙂
i just saw two of these within a couple of hours this morning. I was looking for signs of an exhaust pipe and concluded that it must be electric. then Doug posted a video.
So instead of using leather, a renewable organic material usually made from hides of cows that were going to be used for their meat, they are using synthetic fabrics made from plastic fibers. Excellent
Hey Doug! As DC charging becomes the norm for EVs, it would be helpful to mention the actual max charging speed in kw these vehicles are capable of.
That's kinda misleading unfortunately, it's all about the charging curve, which requires draining it and then plugging in and monitoring to see how it charges. Like the BZ4X AWD (in the US) has a max advertised charging speed of 100kw, but it almost never hits that outside of a short window between like 12-15%, and its charging power drops like a stone after like 25% (and drops under 50kw above 50%), which makes it slower to charge than a Chevy Bolt which charges at a max of 50kw, but it can hold that for most of the charging session.
Doug and Volvo is a good mix. Fastest click
doug the kind of guy to call a very normal looking car a turtle for no apparent reason
The moment you compared power and range was SOOO weird.
"It has more power than all (but the Tesla I don't mention) but that obviously reduces it's range (just not very much in the Tesla I don't mention)."

The plastic clip for the parking ticket saw the light of day in the mid 1980th in the Volvo 700-series and has been installed in almost every Volvo since then.

We are spoiled in Europe, we have the 428 hp 543 Nm Smart #1 Brabus and the MG4 Xpower with 435hp 600 Nm with a 0-62 mph in 3.9 & 3.8 seconds respectively. Price in the UK £43,450 and £36,450 I’ve driven both and ordered the Brabus. They are both supercar fast to the speed limit. Quicker than a Porsche Taycan 4s
Nice! Those would be HUGE hits here in the US. Unfortunately, "market adjustments" would knock the price up an additional 30% at least. Those sounds like incredible cars. Im going to look them up
Yeah but who needs that?
@@christiandulaney1638 it’s similar hear in the UK eg. The Brabus I’ve ordered starts at £30,000 we have 10% import duty, registration, manufactures delivery £529 charge plus another 20% £7,300 Value Added Tax. So it finishes up at £43,450

This is the class of vehicle i hate the most, but that blue carpet on the doors and weird ambient elevation lighting makes me want one. I wish more manufacturer did things like this.
I took a shot every time Doug said “turtle” and I am now on the way to the ER
my absolute favorite electric crossover is the BMW IX3, which is an electric version of the X3, and it looks identical to the x3, inside and out which i love, you get 2023 tech, a high end brand name, good range, great driving dynamics, and looks like a normal car. shame it isn’t available in north america
I can't believe that a ticket holder is a quirk. I have never seen a car without one!!
… so your ticket has a little home while you’re driving down the rooooad 🙌
I have never seen a car with a ticket holder
Doug the kind of guy who's gay for electric SUV crossovers.
Electric SUV crossovers are about as generic as H2o at the moment
In my opinion styling is pretty decent rather than typical crossovers which are already in the market. It's quirky and funky which gives it a more distinctive look.
In Volvo I trust!
Volvo even invented the three-point seatbelt and decided to open the patent so that any car manufacturer could use it in their design, saving millions of lives
They also invented how to make fugly cars for elderly people, luckily nobody copied them
Volvo makes one of the most unique and beautiful cars
Well, not this.
now they only make SUVs
Looking forward to your Grand Highlander, Lexus TX, and ID Buzz Longwheelbase videos!
I remembered Doug's first car was a Volvo 850
Mine was an '89 Cavalier that was mostly rust.
We grew up in different families.
I would consider this because I think the xc40 is so ugly. But at this price and this range, I'll probably just keep looking. I never drag race on my way to work or the grocery store so 0-60 is at the bottom of my priority list.
0-60 is important for avoiding accidents.... sometimes you need to quickly speed out of harms way, and sometimes your car is too slow to do sk
I think Doug should changed the order of the Cars & Bids ad, and start all the videos as before with the THIS... and the car of the day. Then the logo, the the C&B ad, then back to the car. As it was before.
Glad to know Doug is still growing!

Who wants to pay $60,000 for a Chinese car? 😂
Doug, why do you keep avoiding comparisons with the Tesla Model Y? That is the car Volvo is trying to compete with!
Because anything that compares to a Model Y looks like garbage 😂
I really like how the C40 looks like and also compared to the XC40, which i also like, it has more foot room between the brake pedal and the transmission tunnel. But it's really expensive...
Our son just got his ‘23 XC40 Recharge. With all the technology in this car including the pixel headlights (which are amazing), you would think that Volvo would do something different than using the same halogen brake light bulbs from the XC40 gas version.
Thanks for adding the km info. 👏🏻👏🏻👏🏻
Volvos are so underrated
Doug, we love you Doug
the ambient light is just so great, i don’t think it is any odd
The gauge cluster not being able to show more stuff is a feature I'd argue. Only put the stuff you need up there.
As a Tesla driver the start button is totally unnecessary. When you open the door the car wakes up, put your foot on the brake it “starts” and away you go. Then when you put it in park and get out it goes back to sleep… very simple. It took a bit to get used to but now when I drive my wife’s gas car I keep a.most forgetting to turn it off.
Fwiw, the C40 and XC40 EVs were substantially different. It's not just a different outline. Though it's been nearly two years since I last checked in how they differed, and they may have erased the difference by updating the XC40.
I sat in this car today! Pretty nice car! 😊
Love the “don’t fence the Capital” decal.
Materials and finishing are another level here. Wow...
Could you do a review on a gen 1 ford escape? They're not really noticed of, but they are actually pretty cool. They have the 3.0 duratec and are pretty lightweight. These cars aren't noticed as much as an interesting thing, but i love them and a lot of others do too
Some of the new volvos, especially a couple of their new wagons, are some of the nicest looking cars out today. I never thought in my 40 years, that I would say a Volvo looks good.
I feel the same way. I've actually turned my head to look at one, which I would never have expected from a Volvo.
I can't afford one but I find myself lusting after the XC 40.
Agree. I've always had a soft spot for "Boxy but good" Volvos, but nowadays they are just straight up beautiful.
Volvo's newer cars are stunning, particularly the S90 and V90. The long and low proportions look fantastic and they're not overstyled for the sake of being overstyled.
I'm glad I'm not alone out there! 😆😆😆
Im a little confused about the range mentioned in the video, my 2023 XC40 has a pretty similar range to the official numbers by Volvo, 467km.
Other than that, awesome video like always
Additional quirk - with the newest Android Automotive update, if you've got an iphone, you can put Apple Maps navigation in the cluster screen. I've switched to that, which allows GPS+music on the carplay screen
Doug, you should make a video about how car prices have changed dramatically over the last few years.

I have a 2022 Volvo C-40 and it absolutely does change lanes for me. You probably had it in cruise control mode rather than "pilot assist" mode, which is a switch using the same button on the steering wheel. It changes lanes and drives for you in Pilot Assist mode. The range though sucks. And the seats aren't ventilated. Everything else is great. The value of these has dropped dramatically though, and I would buy a used one over new for sure. My car, one and a half years old with 10K miles, was $60K and fully loaded, it is now worth $40,000!!!! So crazy. I am giving my lease back next year in search of better range. You really need around 300 usable range to be practical for any sort of travel. For example I frequently travel to a place about 85 miles away, and I can get there and back without recharging. But, that location is in a great city and I often want to drive around while I am there, which requires driving 15 miles out of the way in heavy highway traffic to a fast charing station, and sitting there for half an hour. So I usually skip it. I tried a 2000 mile each way roadtrip last year and it was horrendous to recharge 5 times each day for 30 or 40 minutes, sitting in the sun because that stupid panoramic roof is not adequately UV protective. Now they sell a screen for it but it is $400 dollars. They didn't have that option at the time.
That windshield clip has been in Volvos for decades BTW. The little trash bin is genius.
I like this car, but Volvo doesn't use LFP batteries in this or the upcoming 2024 rear drive model. That's a deal breaker.
Doug, one thing you forgot to mention with the infotainment system - Despite running Android Automotive, it does not support Android Auto.
Huge pet peeve of mine, the Volvo dealership lied to me about this lack of a feature (or doesn't know their car's actual features), and it's still irritating me to this day. Apple carplay works fine, just no android parallel.
The channel quality is going down with every new week. Doug is a used car dealer now, like Saturday mornings on PBS selling ad space to local car dealers
Turtle comments aside, I like it. What I don't understand is the limited range, given the state of tech these days. I just took my BMW i4 on its first long trip from Virginia Beach to New York. Left my house with a 100% SOC and arrived at an Electrify America charging station in Wilmington (Delaware) 243 miles away and still had 110 miles of range remaining. That worked back to about 4.5 miles/KWH. The advertised range on the car is 282 miles with 19" wheels and I obviously blew past that number by a large margin. I like the crossover style of the Volvo but the short range is a deal-killer for me.
IF you want more range, get the one that accelerates less quickly. Another issue is the size of the tires. Smaller tires equal more range. They come with 20s for the performance car, 19 is a bit better. But you can't go lower. Volvos will never give great range, just good enough.
As a Bavarian with Family who works for BMW i'm glad to see at least one American in TH-cam Comments who is say something positive about their BMW, especially an EV!
If you'd listen to Comment Sections on American Car TH-camrs, you'd think BMWs are horrible Cars, badly made, break down after 10k Miles, no matter which one

@@chartreux1532idk about build quality, I just think they're ugly as sin. Your boss should really give Chris Bangle a ring and ask if he wants his old job back.
The volvo also overperforms similarly to the i4 in good conditions (summertime, flat terrain, not too heavy on the gas). So it's unfair to compare the BMWs best case range with the Volvo's EPA range. Also, the EPA range of the updated 2024 model year is 259 miles for the dual engine, and 290 for the single engine, matching the BMW.
@@chartreux1532 Someone at work has just bought a new BMW M Series. It was only today that I noticed the green stripes on the number plates that I realised it was an i4. The styling is a big contrast from the i3
