Im so happy that the bridge between traditional fighting games and platform fighters are starting to close. Leffen won evo at guilty gear this year (and the fgc hates him as much as the smash scene does lmao) riddles got 129th place at evo in sf6 this year out of over SEVEN THOUSAND COMPETITORS lordknight who’s a top level player in multiple more anime style fighters including guilty gear, persona arena, and melty blood was originally a melee player and recently just made videos on the misconceptions platform fighter players have about traditional fighting games both of which I highly recommend. It all gives me so much hope for the future of both genres. Fighting games are also living proof of how unexplored explored the platfighter genre is and has some WILD shit that you wouldn’t believe. Just as some examples off the top of my head one of the persona arena games has a character that uses baseball innings as a resource, killer instinct (one of my personal favorite traditional fighting games) has a stance character that switches stances at random that you can’t control and has an install that makes him both stances at the same time which turns him into the best character in the game, and arcana heart (I think that’s the right game) has a character that collects playing cards in the match and gets rewarded for drawing better poker hands. Slowly but surely we’re definitely seeing development. All of the crazy unique character designs and movesets in the rivals workshop, nasb2 having ex moves bursts and slime cancels (which is definitely a take on roman cancels from guilty gear) fraymakers having assists, rivals 2 having special ledge getups, special getup attacks, special pummels and pummel breaks (which I KNOW was inspired by killer instinct’s combo breaker system because Dan fornace actually worked on the game) sentinels inc having ex moves, assists AND tag mechanics and finally rushrev which just lets you be batshit insane. Even for as much as people like to shit on brawlhalla you have to admit that the weapons system, gravity canceling, and slide charging are pretty unique. AND spiritfall just came out which is a COMPLETELY different spin on the whole thing. (I know combo devils is doing stuff too but I’m not really familiar enough with the game to speak on it.) Uhhh sorry for the giant fucking wall of text but I’m just really passionate about this and didn’t quite realize how many words I typed until I finished and looked back

I truly like EVERYTHING SAID HERE. especially killer instinct. That game is peak to me. I love bridging this gap we've had. I really enjoy both genres.
I want everyone to succeed. This was so great to read

SF4 was a good start for me to get into traditional fighters, but I feel like what you need is high to top tier characters. You need very good normals, easy specials and good Supers before getting into most fighting games.
The character that locked me into fightings games has to be Ken and Juri. Ken's confidence and backthrowing after a Tatsu was pretty satisfying and Juri's taekwondo moves that make ppl often juggle were really fun to pull off (her sadistic and sensual manners help too)

Honestly this is a breath of fresh air. It's good to hear your insight on this from both as someone enjoys platformers and new to competitive fg player. The fgc does tend to be gatekeep depending on what fg you play but you challenge that perspective and conquer it. The amount of confidence and open-mindedness you have brings a lot of joy to me. Keep up the good work.

Props to you man. I'm a Kat enjoyer myself and trying to continue to grow with her as I've played a lot of righting games even platform fighters in the past like Smash but even got into the FCG scene of traditional fighters.
Also, something to note even if you do the shortcut of her DP, it still stays invincible at least the M and H version and EX the light is not invincible anyway.
But to answer the question. It a little tricky to say I mean I can say what fighting game kind help me expand/get into more fighting games which was Dragon Ball FighterZ . As for a specific character I guess that would have to be Leo White fang from Strive. Contradictory to what a lot of people say that players just play him Unga Bunga which to degree just do, but I do kind as well, but I also like to play him a bit more patiently and then getting in and just stick to them like glue. Honestly, he's been nerfed a few now and then but I'm staying pretty loyal to him no matter how many times he gets nerfed.

OOOOOH... that dp explanation makes sense now.
Theres so many people that talk about guilty gear..... and i just DONT COVER IT... maybe someday. Hopefully.
Im glad you play leo. He looks so cool. And his lore is sad. Thats why id play him.
But thanks for the comment. Its appreciated

NP. Honestly enjoyed watching the video coming from a person who is trying to learn and play 2D fighting games from platformers. As even though I've said I've played a lot of different games but I'm not really the best at any of them, but I enjoy playing the characters I enjoy like Katalina.
As for Leo yeah you can say I kind of vibe with him in a lot of ways plus my nick name among my friends and people call me is Leo, so kind felt like I just had to, or it was just a given already.

for me my best experience into Fighting games was Bridget in Strive her relatively simple fighting style and the amount of options made her quite fun and the more long range Shoto style i do works relatively well, even though i am not having as much fun anymore as my friends Character Happy Chaos keeps on getting nerfed again and again so that he is no longer having fun and doesnt enjoy the direction the game is going.

Damn. Sorry to hear that bud. I sish i got into strive before... but here we are.

Im playing underknight rn. And later on Project L and Multiverus is coming... IM HYPEF

@@SoftwareNeos I dont think he is gonna have fun with Strive anymore, as he fell in love with Chaos character wise and the thing they nerfed was his basic gatlings, he straight up does not work without expending resources, there is no basic gameplan anymore and everything has to be cancelled into "steady aim", its frustrating how much he has to do for next to no reward.
but hey, happy to hear that you are interested in underknight, i dont play it but it looks really fun and now with Project L being called 2XKO i kinda lost hope as it just doesnt sound fun when its called that, i expect a good game, but that new name makes it sound so sweaty and disgusting like actual league.
otherwise to me Multiversus kinda ran its course, it really just decided to make a Demo into the full game and then take that away while scamming people out of their money its kinda disgusting.

    "Show me your exhibition!"
Granblue is probably the best choice you could have made for an entry since it has a F2P option to join the series, a spotdodge/roll and there is a guard button. For my part, I'm mainly interested in GB Versus due to the aesthetics, characters and music with Lowain being hilarious.
I'm too long in the tooth for it to have an appeal due to being an entry game... I've been playing games including Tekken for over 20 years though I played a lot less traditional games.
Don't let the "FGC" get you down, there will always be people to call you a baby gamer for not playing their game, sub-genre or character. If you think it is hard for platform fighter players to be acknowledged, try arena fighters despite Gundam Vs almost being as old as 90s favourites like Guilty Gear, Smash and Tekken.
Who brought me into appreciating fighting games? Hard to say. Hwoarang and Jin in Tekken 3 were definitely important, especially thanks to the bonus modes. I got into playing Melee against family and a number of Dragon Ball games but think playing Clash of Ninja 1 on a higher difficulty is where I went "Oh shit, there's a bit more to this..." before trying to learn more against others. I wasn't playing online yet, so if I didn't play on higher difficulties or watch TH-cam to become aware of heights I wanted to achieve - I'd not be aware to try. Older games that I played like Budokai and Tenkaichi did have some harder fights but either too infrequently (end of long story mode in Budokai) or too cheesy (hide and seek in Tenkaichi, stats as a shortcut) for me to grow.
I'm more of a single player guy though.

      20 YEARS OF TEKKEN? Damn.
And its so interesting to be so varied. Especially when it comes to arena fighters

@@SoftwareNeos I'm just old and played the games my friends/family did at the time. The catch is that fighting wise we mainly played licensed games and Dragon Ball games on the PS1 were some of the worst games I played back then.
My first arena fighter (though I only initially played the demo) was the PS1's Destrega which I need to give more time but was pretty good. I'm sure someone out there is calling it ahead of its time, but that's a bit much.
