Having smaller goals is the key here. Since it's impossibke to pull a smash bros from the start it is easier to make something smaller scale for specific people that will be good enough to let you continue from there. Rivals did that, Ludacity did that, and Combo Devils is doing that

You can go as small as you need to and still be unsuccessful. These better plat fighters still struggle from a marketing standpoint, hence not-so-good sales figures, and lack of exposure. I get needing to spend money to make money but legit it'd take tons of money to really reach people (it's what games spend the vast majority of the budget on), making sure you show ppl what'd compel them to buy (which cant be just combo reels), and ofc making sure the game is really good, whether it's online-only or not

@@kindasomeviews Depends on what your bench mark is. 99 percent of indie fighters, not just Platform fighters stay really small. I'd say if you can least, say be as big as Skullgirls or Power Rangers Battle of the Grid I'd say its a success even if its Very tiny compared to a lot of other traditional fighters.

Wow it's like most plat fighters out there just aren't raising the bar. Imagine if most fighting games played at the same quality as Shaq Fu or Street Fighter 1, then mfs would be like "Fighting games are bad". So what a surprise, ppl dont wanna spend money on shite games and a shite experience. To do good in the space, get a good team, make a great game, put it at least 28 characters, regularly update to add more with stages, very good music and marketing needs to be on point. Devs of these games wanna act like this is rocket science

I feel like part of why Riot Games backed out after seeing Multiversus struggle isn’t so much that MV’s a platfighter, but more because MV’s a free-to-play live service platfighter, which is almost certainly what Pool Party would’ve been as well, considering League and 2XKO are also live services. Then, since the big reason MV’s struggling is because of its monetization, perhaps Riot saw that as a sign that live service platfighters were a bigger risk than expected. I still agree that the lesson to learn was “don’t rip off your audience” rather than “give up on the genre” but to a multi-million dollar corporation those are practically the same sentence.

The thing is, most SF clones came out at around the time of SF2. Meanwhile, Smash had two decades without any real competition, and even now, most of that is coming from rather small/young dev studios, while Smash is being made by the creme de la creme.

The ice cream analogy for Riot is hilarious, but accurate. But yeah, agree all that is said. This genre feels like been built on cursed Indian ground. But I do have some hope still, I mean for the longest time Pokemon had a strangle hold of monster taming but slowly are seeing more. Although, I feel that scene is less fucked because they at least had Digimon and other series. Arena fighters probably have it as bad as Plat fighters.

@@SoftwareNeos Another interesting similarity between plat and Arena fighters at the moment? Both are waiting on one game or two to 'save' the genre. (I.E. Rivals and Sparking Zero) We all know Sparking Zero is going to blow up, its just a matter of how competitive it is, which so far seems like it'll be good as its predecessors. In Rival's case, all it needs to do make a impact and be visible. Also, I really, really hope the SNK plat fighter goes forward. That sounds hella interesting just on a concept level.
Far as Pokemon, its been ass for a bit imo. That's one up it has over Smash, it hasn't really had a bad entry yet. If it had a Street fighter 5 situation, well, that would speak for itself.

I think you're missing the elephant in the room: Riot bought an entire studio (with experience producing solid fighting games) to produce 2XKO, dumped money into it, and then deliberately designed it to appeal to casual players who might not usually buy traditional fighters.
Why would Riot then go around and release another game that targets the same audience? The only way it makes sense is if they could produce it cheaply, and that the built in Platform Fighter fanbase would spend money on it anyways. They probably saw that Multiversus, a game thst had a similar scope to what they were planning, but stronger IPs, wasn't doing well, and realized that the Platform Fighter audience isn't going to throw money at a cheaply produced project.
After that, which do you continue to fund? The big title that you bought a studio to make, already is very far along, and already announced, or a project that's still early in production and has a smaller budget?
Honestly, something like Pool Party probably shouldn't have even been greenlit in the first place. Riot should have waited until after 2XKO had launched to even explore if there was enough demand for another League fighting game.

    • @SoftwareNeos
      @SoftwareNeos  6 หลายเดือนก่อน +1

I dont understand this only cause the target audience wouldn't be the same.
Sure. Fighting games exist. But on rip your getting different audiences to play your game. Do you get the street fighter crowd? The tekken crowd? The MVC crowd? They are fighting games but not everyone is playing all fighting games.
Just like shooting games. You got TF2 and titanfall. But the audiences dont really mix even though they are shooting games.
      Same with plat fighters.
To the second point. Ive already explained why multiversus wasnt doing well. So ill just go to the next one.
Why would riot put 80 workers on the game if it was gonna be CHEAP? ALSO.
Multiversus isnt even cheap. Again. Its everything around multiversus like monetization and bugs.everything else cost MONEY. RIOT can make a cheaper game and have it be fine on release.
At that point... its kinda clear that it wasnt gonna be a cheap game... and all that happened was that a board of directors made a presumption without even thinking about it logically.

    • @JamesNordberg-xv2pq
      @JamesNordberg-xv2pq 6 หลายเดือนก่อน

@@SoftwareNeos Because to the casual player it's all the same thing. Most casuals wouldn't invest in two League fighting games. And the majority of money for fighting games comes from casual players.
For serious players? Sure, Smash and Marvel are very different games with very different scenes. But that's only a fraction of your customers. And by adding one button special moves, it's clear that they're hoping to win over casual Smash players who are too afraid to learn regular fighting games.
On top of that, 80 person dev team doesn't always mean big budget. There are other elements, like scope, time allotted, etc, that are important. If this was a higher budget game, it's very unlikely Riot would have cancelled it. I assume the idea was to put out a game with a short development cycle and release it as early access, as Multiversus is.
Once they realized that platform fighter players don't want to put money into an unfinished game, they probably got cold feet. And frankly, I dunno if I'd want to have to compete with Rivals 2 either.

Disagree, least partially. From to be on the safe side/business partially right but we can't pretend the genre has been cursed fumbling for the longest time because of how they were made, not the genre itself. Like the video said a lot of potentially good ones didn't get released or got fucked over by suits. There is a time line where Punch time explosion and Playstation All stars were good games and part of the big three of Platform fighters, but we sadly don't live in that time line.

Riot really shouldn't have tried to release two fighting games at the same time, even if they're completely different. Regardless of whether or not Pool Party would have succeeded, it would just be stealing 2XKO's thunder. Hopefully some of the devs from this game was redirected to 2XKO.

Crossover platform fighters are doomed to fail because nobody understands what makes Smash great. They're either trying to copy Melee and promote the game with "WE HAVE WAVEDASH YOU GUYS" (Nick All Stars lol), or they fumble around and completely crap their pants when it comes to gameplay (MVS is the prime example for this). There's people who actually know what they're doing (Rivals and the whole Aether project/franchise), but that's like finding a shiny diamond on a random forest hike. It's that rare, yeah.
Other than that, there's absolute potential in 2XKO. Fighting game fans are eating it up (myself included lol), and you can say anything you want as far as the main League of LoL is concerned, that, Arcane, and even a few other side projects are pretty solid. The company is what it is, but I'd be absolutely lying through my teeth if I said they mistreat their IP. They treat it better than some companies with multiple IPs that are just collecting dust, and even them playing it safe with the popular IPs not being great at all. So yeah, as much as they mess up and all, at least there's that.
And no, not defending the company, just the games. I see all companies the same way: Greedy CEOs screwing over genuinely passionate developers who want to make stuff for the fans, but oh no, that's a bit risky, we might lose a few millions in our already multi-billion company! DON'T DO IT! God I hate CEOs and investors.
Oh, and FWIW, yeah I agree they're dumb with the logic behind shelving their platform fighter lol. Though, I do prefer 2XKO in the end, so eh.

You're wrong. We shouldn't allow bad games to just exist.
Bad products won't sell, that's just the gaming business.
Smash has set a high standard for the genre.
Other games are called clones because they have not gained a big fan base. In the 90s Fatal Fury was called an SF clone, like the hundreds of other shitty fighters being released. Fatal fury was able to escape it with its new hit franchise KOF.
Likewise with Tekken being a VF clone and Apex & PUBG being fortnite clones.
Rivals 2 has the potential to do this as well.
Smash has its flaws, namely Smash has PS3 graphics, bad online, and no story.
Canceling bad games will not stop a developer from making their own. But having a genre full of bad games will hurt the market.
All of the games you showed look like shit, that includes Rivals 2 and combo devils. The game needs to look good visually. Doesn't need to have best graphics but visuals play an important role.

Which one of the reasons why DBFZ and GG Strive sold so well.

    • @SoftwareNeos
      @SoftwareNeos  6 หลายเดือนก่อน

my problem with this is that i just dont get the points.
So games are bad games cause their quality of how they look isnt as good as THE BEST OF THE BEST? WELL THEN NOONE SHOULD TRY THEN.
If this is the case some fighting games like under knight in births shouldnt exist. Especially their new game cause Its litterally old models with some new effects. Most other indie fighting games shouldnt exist either like blazing strike. I GUESS THEY SHOULDNT HAVE TRIED. You dont got animation to be 120 frames per second? Get shit on kid... your graphics suck i guess.
If we used your approach to games. Litterally only the biggest and the best should exist. And noone would be inclined to do passion projects.
Tekken had a lot of fans way before their visual overhaul so idk why this is brought up. Especially when the reason why people play tekken over other 3d fighters is characters and gameplay.
Its weird to bring up things like hades and ori and zenless cause... it needed good gameplay to even get there. Litterally all these games would be forgotten or ignored if gameplay was ass. Its great to have both. But if they werent as good visually.... they still be the best regardless. Its a cherry on top. Not the whole entrée.
I just dont see how graphics have to dictate a game being bad.
Also. Again. Rivals 2 and Combo Devils is the best quality VISUALLY that you are going to get compared to nintendos millions of dollars. You can ask any platform fighter player on what looks the best IGNORING SMASH... and they will be the answer. But if you are saying that these are even sub par when it comes to graphics... then theres no hope. And noone should try to make games.
RIOT GAMES not doing the game even goes against your points. It is a big company.... has money and artists that have talent... if anything you should WANT THEM to make a game cause it would give you the visual quality you want. Since you dont like the other games.
SO NOW IM EVEN MORE CONFUSED. Like... what do you want? I dont get it.

@@SoftwareNeos look I don't why you're getting so triggered when I'm just stating facts.
All the games you mentioned, Blazing Strike, and UNI all look good, not graphically intensive, they all look great as sprite based games.
Tekken has always competed on its graphics not with other fighters but other genres as a whole in every generation. Each Tekken release uses graphics that were best at the time, PS1,2,3,4 and 5.
I never said anything about gameplay. You're missing the point, you want to Plat fighters to expand right? Well you need to make good product.
This means good gameplay, animation, visuals, sound design, and story.
Visuals get the players in the door, game play and story makes them stick.
You can't have more players if they never wanted to play in the first place.
If you want the game to hit casual appeal, all they talk about is graphics and how fun it is. You are part of the hard core audience.
The reason why I said the sprite games mentioned earlier looked good and 3D games we mentioned didn't is because people expect more from a 3D game.
Nick 1 had horrendous animation and no sound which led where it is today.
MVS looked decent, it did have issues like animations not canceling on landing but that's just a nitpick of mine. It failed because of the awful Monetization. All being all, visuals play a major role.
And it's depressing that you think devs should give up after this. No said anything about quitting. Just giving facts on why they failing.
I want Rivals 2 to succeed and Combo Devils and I want them to look good. It' doesn't need a big budget just artistic vision.

I do think the newer games coming out look good, like Sentinel's Inc for 2d visual wise. I honestly wouldn't mind more 2d art style plat fighters just as you said pick right art vision for it. Speaking of, I do think Flash Party looks good visually but it has other problems. The funny/sad part is the community has been screaming at the devs for fixes and suggestions and from what I gathered just mostly ignored. I do think that game could of least rivaled or surpassed Brawlhalla as a F2P plat fighter if they just kept improving it, instead of whatever the hell they're doing.
