I really like those brief and awkward pauses of silence during conversations in silent hill, they add another spicy layer of uncannyness/creepiness to the whole mix
The artstyle of the first game needs more recognition. That game makes the Otherworld look incredible. I think the ps1 graphics actually enhance it instead of hold it back. Visually my favorite of the franchise. Hope the sequel being developed for Pachinko machines lives up to the legacy.
Silent Hill 1 was more intense. Don't Cry is terrifying when you hear it in Alchemilla Hospital with Zombie Nurses Damned to roam its dark and foreboding halls. Silent Hill 2 is more heavy and sludgy, with Pyramid dragging that heavy oversized knife. And James Guilt oozing out of every moldy surface. Silent Hill 3 follows up Silent Hill 1s terror with the Bloody walls that move. And the thick heavy angry energy felt from Heather's confusion and anger. And Silent Hill 4s nightmares revolved around the antagonist. Dealing with indoctrination, imprisonment, birth, and Walters suffering. Eileen's motherly compassion even towards Walter she felt pity. But even she knew what needed to be done if she and Henry were to survive. I could go on but the games that followed just rehashed elements from the previous games. And Downpour obviously focused on heavy, cold, constant rain. Reminding Murphy Pendleton of his sins. I miss games like these.
Fun fact Gman: Konami added in a cool little Easter egg if you plugged in either the Namco Guncon or the Justifier into the controller ports of your PS1 while playing Silent Hill you automatically unlock the hyper blaster without having to receive the UFO ending going through a bunch of chutes and ladders.
Actually Silent Hill was subject to extreme crunch. The lead animator actually lived in his office to get this game done on time (edited because I said designer initially)

I remember when i was in the 8th grade I had a 10th grade friend who made me come over his house to play Silent Hill 1. Besides changing my life completely more interestingly he bet me that I could not beat the piano puzzle in under 20 minutes. 14 minutes later he owed me a pizza and lent me 25 subbed vhs tapes of sailor moon in the worst 4th generation copy quality you ever seen. Original Japanese commercials intact, blurry and frequent.
Oh man I miss those times, I was introduced to SH by a friend too, but in my case, my friend was to scared to play the game alone so he invited me and we played (tried) all the night, I was like 11 and that was definitely the scariest I game I have played to this day..
@@cyberdemon9306 I feel lucky i got to play it before Silent Hill 2 came out because its empty natural north east setting really hit a chord with me and was very similar to the nightmares i had throughout my childhood. One of my favorite parts about SH1 is the normality and how it twists without explanation. Not seeing the other world change and not not knowing why there is an air raid siren and not having anything explained. After 3 they got away from this and since the movie the series has been tainted by money and greed.
@@cyberdemon9306 I played it with an older friend too, and it was a pirated Japaneses copy, so we didn't know what we were selecting half the time. But since the dialogue was in English, and the atmosphere was so creepy, it didn't take too long for a 16 yr old and 19 yr old to get paranoid. At one point, we screamed so bad that we had to pause the game to collect ourselves. We were even paranoid on the drive home because a bit of fog rolled in.
Team Silent were the masters of psychological horror. I still remember playing this for the first time as a kid thinking nothing would scare me after playing Resident Evil. I was very wrong. This was my introduction to psychological horror and it genuinely scared the crap out of me. Silent Hill 2 was a masterpiece and even playing it as an adult would still give me nightmares.
The uncensored version has actual monster kids in school instead of these mole monsters and it's creepier. First two SH games I am still replaying at least once every couple years. I guess it helps that they're only 5-6 hours long. First one is definitely the scarier one. Crappy graphics are easily forgotten once that sound design kicks in, it's still pretty immersive.
@@numchuck3 Yes the version with mole monsters in school is the censored one. NTSC-US version should be the proper one, I believe. Mole monsters only appear in Annie's Bar and in the sewers in it.
Yeah I remember when the room came out and everyone was shitting on the silent hill series but that was the last really good one(but I low-key enjoyed origins tho)

I think the most impressive aspect of SH1 was the cinematics, not just graphic wise, but the direction and the expression of the characters, i never forgot the moment Harry realize that Lisa was "one of them", the desperation on Lisa's face, the dread and disgusted face that Harry showed, running, closing the door, and hearing Lisa crying with the excelent soundtrack playing was for me the point that i realized, games are not just for kids anymore
And, in the vein of the same genre as Silent Hill and Resident Evil on PS1, *_Alone In The Dark_* - though it only had the troublesome re-release on PS2, its previous releases, iirc, inspired Resident Evil
Silent Hill isn't on Google maps other than a church and a street. But the "actual" place that is more or less Silent Hill is Centralia, Pennsylvania. It is a town that was evacuated more than 50 years back iirc due to a fire that caused an abandoned coal mine to light on fire and is still burning to this day, because of the carbon monoxide fumes coming up from the ground.
Yeah, the Mumbler is what we're seeing in this video: the brown teddy-looking things with claws. The Grey Child looks notably more similar to a first grader, though still monstrous in appearance and definitely not mistakable for anything human.
I first played this game with a mate on his chipped Playstation before the game came out in the UK, so it was the US version. We didn't even know what it really was. We were completely unprepared. The Grey Children were much more disturbing, those noises still give me PTSD to this day.

I also grew up with the US version and i live in Europe, for some reason back in those times (late 90s early 2000s) everyone was burning US versions of video games,primarily PS1 and 2 games,bcs we all had modded or chipped consoles back then hahah 😅
The worst thing about SH1 is the boiler note memo that isn’t in the NA version of the game, due to a bug. This RUINED western fans who for years misinterpreted the story, due to this missing file. Do play the NA version, because it’s the best version with the correct enemies, but when you get to a certain part at the end of the game, look up the boiler note memo.

The least spoiler explanation I can give is "The fire was not part of a ritual. The fire was an accident caused by putting a girl under extreme stress. Below I'll further spoil... like a lot, so you're better off just keeping the cryptic sentence above in mind if you plan on playing. Anyway: Alessa Gillespie is the daughter of a cult leader. Alessa has psychic abilities and is a powerful child. (My theory is that this was done TO her and not natural, since she was groomed for a purpose.) The cult wanted to use Alessa's body as the vessel to bring a "god" into the world. This "god" was supposed to bring about a paradise on earth, but this "paradise" is obviously a nightmarish hell, and the god is a demonic being or ancient evil entity. Alessa did not want to go along with the sacrifice and resisted, during the struggle the boiler in their home caught fire and the house burned down, charring her body. She was kept alive, and her soul split into two. Without the note, people assumed that the fire was part of the ritual, but it's obvious once you read the note and play the game, that something went wrong. If they had succeeded with the ritual then the game would not have taken place, since the cult would have already brought about their "paradise". The whole reason you're even there in the first place isn't just an accident [even more spoilers]..... SPPPPPPPPPPOOOOOOOOIIIIIIIIILLLLLLLLLLLLEEEEEEEEEERRRRRRRRRRSSSSSSSSSSSSSSS[[[[Cheryl is the other half of Alessa's soul and was drawn to the town]]]]]]]]]
I still wish we could've gotten a full game for Silent Hill P.T. It offered an unrivaled horror experience that would've been groundbreaking in the horror genre for games.
Did it really though? I played it and whilst it was atmospheric and eerie and tense. It was just a series of walking back and forwards through the same gallery waiting for scripted sequences to appear/happen. So lets not overrate it as some meta horror masterpiece when it was really just your bog standard horror game with a kojima twist on it.
Listen to band Lycia, the game's soundtrack almost feels like it took inspiration from some of their stuff (especially off the Cold album and The Burning Circle and then Dust album)
This game was pretty amazing for the time. Someone even took the entire game and turned it into a 8 map campaign for Left4Dead 1 and 2 with all the puzzles intact, its a wild ride
I think the reason why Silent Hill 1's graphics still hold up is that they're reminiscent of papercraft or stop motion. Even the low frame rate makes it feel like claymation, which further makes you feel like you're living in a nightmare
I remember my buddy and I rented this in elementary school. We were scared so shitless, we started laughing. We made it to the school and I never touched it again until my junior year of high school when I played this in preparation for Silent Hill 3. Good memories. 11/10 horror. Fun fact. The final boss track was made with a dentist drill.
The thing I liked best about the first Silent Hill is that the multiple endings were influenced by actions you took in game. There was an entire section of the game that was skippable if you were not too worried about the fates of some of the other characters you encountered. Later entries in the series used a some what cryptic set of criteria to determine which of the endings you would earn. Eventually the spread of FAQs and (later) walkthroughs would demystify that process to an extent. However, I still think the first game allowing you to directly manipulate the narrative toward the ending you were trying to get was my favorite system .
I was so upset when I missed that extra section of the game during my playthrough as I wanted the full experience. I explored around that area as I thought heading there was the next main objective and then I accidentally triggered the actual next objective, prohibiting me from concluding that side arc.
Fun fact. You don't have to fire a single bullet to defeat Silent Hill's final boss. Spend all of your bullets before descending on the last staircase, and I do mean ALL OF YOUR BULLETS. Pistols, shotguns, hunting rifles. You need to have absolutely zero ammo before the boss encounter. Then all you have to do is go around the stage dodging the monster for about two or three circles and you're done. The creature will automatically keel over and die. See, the whole boss fight is a scripted event which will automatically end once you spent all of your bullets. It's mind trickery to make it seem like you've been fighting a difficult boss. Not sure if it's intentional or because of technical reasons but there you have it. How to kill the last boss in SIlent Hill without ever firing a single shot. Kind of.
I was 13 when I first played Silent Hill and I was expecting it to be just another Resident Evil knockoff and boy was I wrong... It is also the only game that gave me nightmares as a kid.
I played SH2 when I was 14, expecting resident evil. The dude in the store told me 'new hot horror game, scary as shit'. And boy it wasn't just scary, it was so fucking disturbing that I got so depressed that I missed school for a week. I was too young for heavy themes it touched, I kept thinking about it and felt terrible all the time, I couldn't even comprehend it properly - it was so fucked up. And it was the experience that kept haunting me as I grew older and were relating more and more when getting more life experience, understanding everything better. SH games are the most mature games ever created, that's for sure, not because of violence, but because they require a lot of personal experience with darkest shit in life.
@@orchid9 Holy crap, I am glad I played it with a friend first time in my high school year. SH got so crazy scary, we were passing controllers back and forth because we couldn't handle the stress. On the way home around 11pm, we were just chatting in the car non stop hoping not to see any fog or little girl run out of road. One of the game that scared a 16 yrs old and 19 yrs old at the same time.

Yooooo I *just* finished this for the first time on my PS2 3 hours ago. Some of the little tricks it pulls are brilliant (like the locker room one) and the story is better than people had led me to expect. Oh and it's actually not very long (6 hours, 46 minutes) which for horror games is a plus most of the time. Oh and there were some surprising QOL touches, like pre-boss checkpoints and a few moments where you need to go all the way across town and the game just straight-up teleports you there. Also if you go into the final boss w/no ammo you can apparently just try to reload all of your weapons and it will drop dead so it's not possible to get screwed over in that regard. The controls, voice acting and low-detail graphics, intentional or not, really just added to the deeply weird, dismal, and oppressive vibe of the game. Also the hammer is so powerful I actually started fighting enemies lol
@Disobedient Nomead Oh yeah I'm definitely going to do a New Fear run after a little break. I want to play the extra hard mode to get some real challenge. I actually own every localized game besides Book of Memories, and have beaten 2, 3, and Origins before. I've found something to enjoy about all of them but there's no denying the original games are on a whole different level.
@@ninjatanek8516 In some parts here in Mexico, there are subways and tunnels blocked by wire, normal looking streets that suddenly shift into old industrials zones, etc. I remember one time, I had to cross this metal and concrete pedestrian bridge, and the whole thing had rusty wires hanging from the upper part and all around, and the long stairs leading up to it where so badly built, each step was almost vertical; I can imagine how it looks like at night. And no, not all of the places are like that, but if you know where to look, you have the scenery for a Silent Hill live action right there, hahaha.
I had played through RE 1 and 2 a billion times by time this came out (and Alone in the Dark once on pc) but this thing still scared the absolute shit out of me. The fog was a genius addition.
I played this game a lot back in the day. Did you know that you can break the neck of those flying monsters with a well timed steel pipe swing? It will then slowly fly away from you near the ground with it's head dangling.
If you're a fan of silent hill even a little then you owe it to yourself to watch the twin perfect video series on the games. They explain everything in insane detail. I actually became a bigger silent hill fan because of their videos. They are also great for days when you don't have **** to do because they can be up to like 4 hours long and there's tons of them and then they would do revisits answering fan questions or if a different interpretation was offered they would explain why it was actually this other way. Absolutely fantastic.

I miss the old days playing Silent Hill in a cold weekend with my ex-girlfriend. We had little money, just enough to grab a pizza and a couple of beers. But it was always a hauntingly beautiful experience. Plus, something in the horror and the music always turned her on for some reason.
Most rewarding thing on Silent Hill1 is getting the Laser gun after the UFO ending, and using it against enemies that haven't even appeared on screen, then advancing and see all the enemy horde dead.

The snow in Silent Hill 1 (the game) is indeed snow, despite the movie claiming it's ash. The doctor Kaufman refers to it as snow, "...and it's snowing. At this time of year?". Additionally, the first track to play during the game is called "Summer Snow".
The only thing that really held it back was the vertex lighting, although it was not quite as noticeable as in Silent Hill 2 due to the more detailed textures environments. i still prefer the look of 2, but 3 is one hell of a stunner.
Lots of content creators I follow are talking about this game this year. I remember it being one of the only games that actually made me afraid to sleep at night as a kid. One of my favorites to this day.
9:48 one of my absolute favorite scares in the game; they set it up so well. When you go there first in the regular world, there's not much that happens (other than a gray child eating the cat that jumps out), but that sets it up so well for the body to come out of nowhere in the otherworld later on.

sh1 & 2 have a really special place in my heart since i played them as a kid. i recently replayed them, and they hold up just great, specially sh1. the low poly aesthetic is magical man.

The first SH soundtrack is very Tetsuo The Iron Man. That shit slams. I just watched the movie for the first time last weekend and I was ok for the first quarter of the movie, then Pyramid Head showed up and got dropped off the face of the earth, the whole hospital scene - yeah, I lost it then, haha.
This game and Parasite Eve are still the only times that gaming with my girlfriend looked like a console commercial because she would actually curl up on the couch with me when I played, wouldn't let me play without her and would even suggest that we put it on when I hadn't mentioned it. It was a golden time when anything seemed possible. I'm not crying you're crying.

16:20 Now that Woolie started his Silent Hill run and his first ever survival horror game, he's going through healing items pretty quickly when making a lot of new player mistakes and getting used to the controls. So the game Normal difficulty is quite sweaty for a person who is new to tank controls.

His playthrough is interesting because he has a QA Testing- and lengthy fighting game streaming background (used to be part of SuperBestFriends). Yet as a genre newcomer he makes the same decisions and mistakes I (and probably you) made as a kid when playing for first time. Like trying to shank dogs in outside areas to conserve ammo. So him being good in other game genres doesn't make it much easier. His troubles with the game reminded me of this video for some reason so had a rewatch.
I'd agree that Silent Hill 2 is less visceral since SH1 was arguably more gory. I mean, yeah you came across dead bodies in Silent Hill 2. But most of the time they were just slumped in a corner, In SH1 they were hanged up and displayed with bits and pieces missing from them.
I must say that I really like the first SH movie, but on the other hand, I didn't really played any SH game.. but in my opinion, it was the best horror movie from 2006.. it has great atmosphere and music (which I know is from the games)
the movie has the right presentation but the plot isn't so great. it loses the weird, dreamlike vibe of the game in favour of a more straight horror tone, and for some reason decides to change the cult from a weird pagan thing into a puritan one, which is a weird choice
They messed up some important characters tho. Harry, Lisa Garland, Kauffman, and some monsters also (pyramid head, nurses) and so that affect the story.
I'm the same. Loved the first movie but couldn't get into Silent Hill games, though I tried only the first two games, I've always got bored after a few hours. It sure doesn't help that I didn't play them at the time of their release too
Silent Hill four is the most underrated game in the series. Something about this game freaked me out more than any of the others. It was almost too dark. The opening when you turn the game on is god damn freaky.

@@edwinortega4499 I've played all *two* of them multiple times, and the first one is the better of the two imo. They actually did a great job with the second one, even with vocalizing Isaac, but the raw, cluttered, cramped, shitty atmosphere of the Ishimura in the first game really gets to me much more than the polished city feel of the second game. There's great shit in the second one all the way through but the first one lays it on thick and never lets up.

Just replayed through all three of them this year, and it is incredible how perfect the first game is. Second one didn't do much for me; it's more of a horror-themed shooter where the shooting doesn't hold up too well. And I still don't understand the hate for 3. It's much easier than the other two on Normal difficulty, but it comes full circle to The Thing where the series drew it's inspiration from.

I´m currently playing the Silent Hill 2 with the "Enhanced edition" mod, it´s totally bonkers, so far it´s my favorite on the saga, on second place there is a tie between SH1 and Shattered Memories.
Silent Hill 3 introduced me to the franchise. Being seven years old, I did not know what I was getting myself into ; when stumbling upon this game in one of the PS2 Demo Discs . What drew my attention was the graphics, monsters projecting emotions, and even the atmosphere. In 2003, there was no other game on the PS2 pushing the hardware's limitations. Silent Hill 3 not only caught my interest into the franchise, it was the reason I wanted a PS2. Unfortunately, I couldn't get the game at my local GameStop due to ESRB rating. Years later into my high school, I began collecting PS2 games and found Silent Hill 3 for $25; Silent Hill 2 for $5, and Silent Hill 1 for $25. Worth my money and easily my favorite horror games to exist.
Yeah SH1 had more raw feeling in it. More grind, blood and sweat. Also the story was more hidden than in the two so you had to figure the little details out. The soundtrack of the first one is still on my playlist. Industrial sounds I would say. Like in the Tetsuo Iron Man movie. SH1 is still my most favorite in the whole series.

I just beat this game for the first time the other day and I absolutely loved this game. Solving most of the puzzles on my own was so satisfying. The way that this game makes you explore and find your way around on your own was a breath of fresh air compared to games of today. For the first time in a while a game made me feel like an adult lol. I’m kind of mad at myself that I got the bad ending because I did have the unknown chemical but didn’t know how to use it and the Kauffman side quest completely eluded me. Overal love this game and can’t wait to play the sequels.
I envy you that you can experience SH2 fresh... love that games atmosphere and story. Until today I realy like to watch LPs from different gamers that exp that game for the first time :)

As a kid I found this disc at my older cousins house and as soon as I got into the back alley with the camera going overhead it took me like a solid few minutes to move on beetween screens. I only got to the part where the monsters start showing up and shut it down. As an adult I had a vague memory of this game scaring me shitless so I booted it up and beat the thing. Great game.
The first Silent Hill is still one of my favorite games of all time. 2 and 3 were my introduction into the series, but I went back and played 1 and it was so worth it. It's a shame we never really got another good one after 1-4, and 4 was kinda odd anyways =0
I think the dated graphics of the first Silent Hill game work in its favor since it allows the mind to fill in the gaps on details, and simultaneously allow it to subconsciously work as an impromptu psychological horror element. Edit: My particular point of view on this comes from the fact that I didn't really grow up with Silent Hill as a series. It came out about a year before I was born and I only played it for the first time back in (around) 2014. And where I wasn't scared of it per se (horror games just don't seem to have any affect on me I guess, it sucks) it still kinda freaked me out in a passive way that no other game ever had except for F.E.A.R which made me irrationally scared as a child, but I digress. My point here is that nostalgia isn't really playing a role in this particular case.

Having played the first three in reverse order originally, the only thing that annoyed the shit out of me in the first one was that the radio "static" sounded more like somebody playing a never ending school bell through a walkie-talkie.
Yeah, I'm not too fond of that odd bell sound. I'm always surprised when I see people stating that the radio static was scarier in 1 than 2, especially given the three progressively-scarier stages the radio has in 2.

@@kacper2274 that's just your subjective opinion, i have a different opinion that most people who played silent hill games would agree that silent hill 2 is the best in the series, 4 is my second favorite, after that 3 and last is silent hill 1 . But nothing has scared more than pt silent hills did, it was both extremely creepy and scary, it wasn't a game it was an interactive teaser so I wouldn't call it a game because it was canceled
I think movie adaptation is fairly good. I mean more specifically comparing to other game based movies. But absolutely,the lore should've been focused more. Though then again nitpicking about having possibly hours of plot compacted to couple hours might not work either.
Yea my exact opinion, I even would say its the best "Video Game Movie Adaption" (perhabs with the WoW Movie) but just that... there are a lot worse Video Game Movies in comparison. But as just a "Horror" Movie there are a lot better ones :)

I think everyone can agree that there's plethora of horror movies that are worse than Silent Hill. Thinking about overall quality of horror movies, I'd say it's well above average. It comes to show just how well-made this game is that I can still go back and play it today. I've always been more of a Fatal Frame guy, and PS1 games RARELY get with me, due to weird controls, goofy graphics, etc., but I can always go back to this one. No nostalgia attached, no history with the PS1, just me, this game, and a good time.
The first game always has a special place for me too because the day i exchanged a game for silent hill from my friend that movie was on air on tv.. That was some sick shit..

The artstyle of the first game needs more recognition. That game makes the Otherworld look incredible. I think the ps1 graphics actually enhance it instead of hold it back. Visually my favorite of the franchise.

First one has top creep factor definitely.
It really nails Silent Hill's trademark spooky atmosphere with the MUA HA HA Dracula voice the plays every time you miss a shot.
Silent Hill 1 was more intense. Don't Cry is terrifying when you hear it in Alchemilla Hospital with Zombie Nurses Damned to roam its dark and foreboding halls. Silent Hill 2 is more heavy and sludgy, with Pyramid dragging that heavy oversized knife. And James Guilt oozing out of every moldy surface. Silent Hill 3 follows up Silent Hill 1s terror with the Bloody walls that move. And the thick heavy angry energy felt from Heather's confusion and anger. And Silent Hill 4s nightmares revolved around the antagonist. Dealing with indoctrination, imprisonment, birth, and Walters suffering. Eileen's motherly compassion even towards Walter she felt pity. But even she knew what needed to be done if she and Henry were to survive. I could go on but the games that followed just rehashed elements from the previous games. And Downpour obviously focused on heavy,
cold, constant rain. Reminding Murphy Pendleton of his sins. I miss games like these.
Fun fact Gman: Konami added in a cool little Easter egg if you plugged in either the Namco Guncon or the Justifier into the controller ports of your PS1 while playing Silent Hill you automatically unlock the hyper blaster without having to receive the UFO ending going through a bunch of chutes and ladders.

I remember when i was in the 8th grade I had a 10th grade friend who made me come over his house to play Silent Hill 1. Besides changing my life completely more interestingly he bet me that I could not beat the piano puzzle in under 20 minutes. 14 minutes later he owed me a pizza and lent me 25 subbed vhs tapes of sailor moon in the worst 4th generation copy quality you ever seen. Original Japanese commercials intact, blurry and frequent.
Oh man I miss those times, I was introduced to SH by a friend too, but in my case, my friend was to scared to play the game alone so he invited me and we played (tried) all the night, I was like 11 and that was definitely the scariest I game I have played to this day..
@@cyberdemon9306 I feel lucky i got to play it before Silent Hill 2 came out because its empty natural north east setting really hit a chord with me and was very similar to the nightmares i had throughout my childhood. One of my favorite parts about SH1 is the normality and how it twists without explanation. Not seeing the other world change and not not knowing why there is an air raid siren and not having anything explained. After 3 they got away from this and since the movie the series has been tainted by money and greed.

But since the dialogue was in English, and the atmosphere was so creepy, it didn't take too long for a 16 yr old and 19 yr old to get paranoid.
At one point, we screamed so bad that we had to pause the game to collect ourselves.
We were even paranoid on the drive home because a bit of fog rolled in.

I played this game when I was 5
Team Silent were the masters of psychological horror. I still remember playing this for the first time as a kid thinking nothing would scare me after playing Resident Evil. I was very wrong. This was my introduction to psychological horror and it genuinely scared the crap out of me. Silent Hill 2 was a masterpiece and even playing it as an adult would still give me nightmares.
The uncensored version has actual monster kids in school instead of these mole monsters and it's creepier. First two SH games I am still replaying at least once every couple years. I guess it helps that they're only 5-6 hours long. First one is definitely the scarier one. Crappy graphics are easily forgotten once that sound design kicks in, it's still pretty immersive.

Don't overlook SH4. The story and atmosphere is just as good as the first 3. After that is where the series takes a dump.
Yeah I remember when the room came out and everyone was shitting on the silent hill series but that was the last really good one(but I low-key enjoyed origins tho)

I think the most impressive aspect of SH1 was the cinematics, not just graphic wise, but the direction and the expression of the characters, i never forgot the moment Harry realize that Lisa was "one of them", the desperation on Lisa's face, the dread and disgusted face that Harry showed, running, closing the door, and hearing Lisa crying with the excelent soundtrack playing was for me the point that i realized, games are not just for kids anymore

But the "actual" place that is more or less Silent Hill is Centralia, Pennsylvania.
It is a town that was evacuated more than 50 years back iirc due to a fire that caused an abandoned coal mine to light on fire and is still burning to this day, because of the carbon monoxide fumes coming up from the ground.

Fun fact: one of the monsters the Grey Child isn’t seen in most countries outside of the US. It was replaced with the Mumbler due to their appearance.
Yeah, the Mumbler is what we're seeing in this video: the brown teddy-looking things with claws. The Grey Child looks notably more similar to a first grader, though still monstrous in appearance and definitely not mistakable for anything human.
I first played this game with a mate on his chipped Playstation before the game came out in the UK, so it was the US version. We didn't even know what it really was. We were completely unprepared. The Grey Children were much more disturbing, those noises still give me PTSD to this day.
I had nightmares about those...and the noises the Grey Children make is just haunting.

The worst thing about SH1 is the boiler note memo that isn’t in the NA version of the game, due to a bug. This RUINED western fans who for years misinterpreted the story, due to this missing file. Do play the NA version, because it’s the best version with the correct enemies, but when you get to a certain part at the end of the game, look up the boiler note memo.

The least spoiler explanation I can give is "The fire was not part of a ritual. The fire was an accident caused by putting a girl under extreme stress. Below I'll further spoil... like a lot, so you're better off just keeping the cryptic sentence above in mind if you plan on playing. Anyway:
Alessa Gillespie is the daughter of a cult leader. Alessa has psychic abilities and is a powerful child. (My theory is that this was done TO her and not natural, since she was groomed for a purpose.) The cult wanted to use Alessa's body as the vessel to bring a "god" into the world. This "god" was supposed to bring about a paradise on earth, but this "paradise" is obviously a nightmarish hell, and the god is a demonic being or ancient evil entity. Alessa did not want to go along with the sacrifice and resisted, during the struggle the boiler in their home caught fire and the house burned down, charring her body. She was kept alive, and her soul split into two. Without the note, people assumed that the fire was part of the ritual, but it's obvious once you read the note and play the game, that something went wrong. If they had succeeded with the ritual then the game would not have taken place, since the cult would have already brought about their "paradise". The whole reason you're even there in the first place isn't just an accident [even more spoilers].....

Did it really though? I played it and whilst it was atmospheric and eerie and tense. It was just a series of walking back and forwards through the same gallery waiting for scripted sequences to appear/happen. So lets not overrate it as some meta horror masterpiece when it was really just your bog standard horror game with a kojima twist on it.

This game was pretty amazing for the time. Someone even took the entire game and turned it into a 8 map campaign for Left4Dead 1 and 2 with all the puzzles intact, its a wild ride

I think the reason why Silent Hill 1's graphics still hold up is that they're reminiscent of papercraft or stop motion. Even the low frame rate makes it feel like claymation, which further makes you feel like you're living in a nightmare
I remember my buddy and I rented this in elementary school. We were scared so shitless, we started laughing. We made it to the school and I never touched it again until my junior year of high school when I played this in preparation for Silent Hill 3. Good memories.
11/10 horror. Fun fact. The final boss track was made with a dentist drill.
The thing I liked best about the first Silent Hill is that the multiple endings were influenced by actions you took in game. There was an entire section of the game that was skippable if you were not too worried about the fates of some of the other characters you encountered. Later entries in the series used a some what cryptic set of criteria to determine which of the endings you would earn. Eventually the spread of FAQs and (later) walkthroughs would demystify that process to an extent. However, I still think the first game allowing you to directly manipulate the narrative toward the ending you were trying to get was my favorite system .
I was so upset when I missed that extra section of the game during my playthrough as I wanted the full experience. I explored around that area as I thought heading there was the next main objective and then I accidentally triggered the actual next objective, prohibiting me from concluding that side arc.
Fun fact. You don't have to fire a single bullet to defeat Silent Hill's final boss. Spend all of your bullets before descending on the last staircase, and I do mean ALL OF YOUR BULLETS. Pistols, shotguns, hunting rifles. You need to have absolutely zero ammo before the boss encounter. Then all you have to do is go around the stage dodging the monster for about two or three circles and you're done. The creature will automatically keel over and die. See, the whole boss fight is a scripted event which will automatically end once you spent all of your bullets. It's mind trickery to make it seem like you've been fighting a difficult boss. Not sure if it's intentional or because of technical reasons but there you have it. How to kill the last boss in SIlent Hill without ever firing a single shot. Kind of.
I was 13 when I first played Silent Hill and I was expecting it to be just another Resident Evil knockoff and boy was I wrong... It is also the only game that gave me nightmares as a kid.
I played SH2 when I was 14, expecting resident evil. The dude in the store told me 'new hot horror game, scary as shit'. And boy it wasn't just scary, it was so fucking disturbing that I got so depressed that I missed school for a week. I was too young for heavy themes it touched, I kept thinking about it and felt terrible all the time, I couldn't even comprehend it properly - it was so fucked up. And it was the experience that kept haunting me as I grew older and were relating more and more when getting more life experience, understanding everything better. SH games are the most mature games ever created, that's for sure, not because of violence, but because they require a lot of personal experience with darkest shit in life.
@@orchid9 Holy crap, I am glad I played it with a friend first time in my high school year. SH got so crazy scary, we were passing controllers back and forth because we couldn't handle the stress. On the way home around 11pm, we were just chatting in the car non stop hoping not to see any fog or little girl run out of road.

Yooooo I *just* finished this for the first time on my PS2 3 hours ago. Some of the little tricks it pulls are brilliant (like the locker room one) and the story is better than people had led me to expect. Oh and it's actually not very long (6 hours, 46 minutes) which for horror games is a plus most of the time. Oh and there were some surprising QOL touches, like pre-boss checkpoints and a few moments where you need to go all the way across town and the game just straight-up teleports you there. Also if you go into the final boss w/no ammo you can apparently just try to reload all of your weapons and it will drop dead so it's not possible to get screwed over in that regard.
The controls, voice acting and low-detail graphics, intentional or not, really just added to the deeply weird, dismal, and oppressive vibe of the game.
Also the hammer is so powerful I actually started fighting enemies lol
Also combat gets a lot easier to maneuver if you hold sprint while strafing--the first boss in particular is a LOT easier with that maneuver.

I actually own every localized game besides Book of Memories, and have beaten 2, 3, and Origins before. I've found something to enjoy about all of them but there's no denying the original games are on a whole different level.

I remember one time, I had to cross this metal and concrete pedestrian bridge, and the whole thing had rusty wires hanging from the upper part and all around, and the long stairs leading up to it where so badly built, each step was almost vertical; I can imagine how it looks like at night. And no, not all of the places are like that, but if you know where to look, you have the scenery for a Silent Hill live action right there, hahaha.
I had played through RE 1 and 2 a billion times by time this came out (and Alone in the Dark once on pc) but this thing still scared the absolute shit out of me. The fog was a genius addition.

If you're a fan of silent hill even a little then you owe it to yourself to watch the twin perfect video series on the games. They explain everything in insane detail. I actually became a bigger silent hill fan because of their videos. They are also great for days when you don't have **** to do because they can be up to like 4 hours long and there's tons of them and then they would do revisits answering fan questions or if a different interpretation was offered they would explain why it was actually this other way. Absolutely fantastic.

The snow in Silent Hill 1 (the game) is indeed snow, despite the movie claiming it's ash. The doctor Kaufman refers to it as snow, "...and it's snowing. At this time of year?". Additionally, the first track to play during the game is called "Summer Snow".
Silent Hill 3 will always be the best looking game ever made for me.
The only thing that really held it back was the vertex lighting, although it was not quite as noticeable as in Silent Hill 2 due to the more detailed textures environments. i still prefer the look of 2, but 3 is one hell of a stunner.

Lots of content creators I follow are talking about this game this year. I remember it being one of the only games that actually made me afraid to sleep at night as a kid. One of my favorites to this day.

I just watched the movie for the first time last weekend and I was ok for the first quarter of the movie, then Pyramid Head showed up and got dropped off the face of the earth, the whole hospital scene - yeah, I lost it then, haha.
This game and Parasite Eve are still the only times that gaming with my girlfriend looked like a console commercial because she would actually curl up on the couch with me when I played, wouldn't let me play without her and would even suggest that we put it on when I hadn't mentioned it. It was a golden time when anything seemed possible. I'm not crying you're crying.

So the game Normal difficulty is quite sweaty for a person who is new to tank controls.

His playthrough is interesting because he has a QA Testing- and lengthy fighting game streaming background (used to be part of SuperBestFriends). Yet as a genre newcomer he makes the same decisions and mistakes I (and probably you) made as a kid when playing for first time. Like trying to shank dogs in outside areas to conserve ammo. So him being good in other game genres doesn't make it much easier.
His troubles with the game reminded me of this video for some reason so had a rewatch.
I'd agree that Silent Hill 2 is less visceral since SH1 was arguably more gory.
I mean, yeah you came across dead bodies in Silent Hill 2. But most of the time they were just slumped in a corner, In SH1 they were hanged up and displayed with bits and pieces missing from them.
I think with modern emulation, you can switch the lighting to per-pixel rather than gouraud shading to make it look even better.
I must say that I really like the first SH movie, but on the other hand, I didn't really played any SH game.. but in my opinion, it was the best horror movie from 2006.. it has great atmosphere and music (which I know is from the games)
the movie has the right presentation but the plot isn't so great. it loses the weird, dreamlike vibe of the game in favour of a more straight horror tone, and for some reason decides to change the cult from a weird pagan thing into a puritan one, which is a weird choice
They messed up some important characters tho. Harry, Lisa Garland, Kauffman, and some monsters also (pyramid head, nurses) and so that affect the story.
I'm the same. Loved the first movie but couldn't get into Silent Hill games, though I tried only the first two games, I've always got bored after a few hours. It sure doesn't help that I didn't play them at the time of their release too
Silent Hill four is the most underrated game in the series. Something about this game freaked me out more than any of the others. It was almost too dark. The opening when you turn the game on is god damn freaky.
Back when Konami released some actual games instead of pachinko machines.

@@edwinortega4499 I've played all *two* of them multiple times, and the first one is the better of the two imo. They actually did a great job with the second one, even with vocalizing Isaac, but the raw, cluttered, cramped, shitty atmosphere of the Ishimura in the first game really gets to me much more than the polished city feel of the second game. There's great shit in the second one all the way through but the first one lays it on thick and never lets up.

Just replayed through all three of them this year, and it is incredible how perfect the first game is. Second one didn't do much for me; it's more of a horror-themed shooter where the shooting doesn't hold up too well. And I still don't understand the hate for 3. It's much easier than the other two on Normal difficulty, but it comes full circle to The Thing where the series drew it's inspiration from.
@@AbsoluteDeicide the third one just seemed more action oriented than the others. The first one scared me constantly, but the third was mainly just through jump scares.
I´m currently playing the Silent Hill 2 with the "Enhanced edition" mod, it´s totally bonkers, so far it´s my favorite on the saga, on second place there is a tie between SH1 and Shattered Memories.

Silent Hill 3 introduced me to the franchise. Being seven years old, I did not know what I was getting myself into ; when stumbling upon this game in one of the PS2 Demo Discs . What drew my attention was the graphics, monsters projecting emotions, and even the atmosphere. In 2003, there was no other game on the PS2 pushing the hardware's limitations. Silent Hill 3 not only caught my interest into the franchise, it was the reason I wanted a PS2. Unfortunately, I couldn't get the game at my local GameStop due to ESRB rating. Years later into my high school, I began collecting PS2 games and found Silent Hill 3 for $25; Silent Hill 2 for $5, and Silent Hill 1 for $25.
Worth my money and easily my favorite horror games to exist.

Yeah SH1 had more raw feeling in it. More grind, blood and sweat. Also the story was more hidden than in the two so you had to figure the little details out.
The soundtrack of the first one is still on my playlist. Industrial sounds I would say. Like in the Tetsuo Iron Man movie.
SH1 is still my most favorite in the whole series.

I just beat this game for the first time the other day and I absolutely loved this game. Solving most of the puzzles on my own was so satisfying. The way that this game makes you explore and find your way around on your own was a breath of fresh air compared to games of today. For the first time in a while a game made me feel like an adult lol. I’m kind of mad at myself that I got the bad ending because I did have the unknown chemical but didn’t know how to use it and the Kauffman side quest completely eluded me. Overal love this game and can’t wait to play the sequels.
I envy you that you can experience SH2 fresh... love that games atmosphere and story.
Until today I realy like to watch LPs from different gamers that exp that game for the first time :)

As a kid I found this disc at my older cousins house and as soon as I got into the back alley with the camera going overhead it took me like a solid few minutes to move on beetween screens. I only got to the part where the monsters start showing up and shut it down. As an adult I had a vague memory of this game scaring me shitless so I booted it up and beat the thing. Great game.
The first Silent Hill is still one of my favorite games of all time. 2 and 3 were my introduction into the series, but I went back and played 1 and it was so worth it.
It's a shame we never really got another good one after 1-4, and 4 was kinda odd anyways =0
I think the dated graphics of the first Silent Hill game work in its favor since it allows the mind to fill in the gaps on details, and simultaneously allow it to subconsciously work as an impromptu psychological horror element.
Edit: My particular point of view on this comes from the fact that I didn't really grow up with Silent Hill as a series. It came out about a year before I was born and I only played it for the first time back in (around) 2014. And where I wasn't scared of it per se (horror games just don't seem to have any affect on me I guess, it sucks) it still kinda freaked me out in a passive way that no other game ever had except for F.E.A.R which made me irrationally scared as a child, but I digress. My point here is that nostalgia isn't really playing a role in this particular case.

Having played the first three in reverse order originally, the only thing that annoyed the shit out of me in the first one was that the radio "static" sounded more like somebody playing a never ending school bell through a walkie-talkie.
Yeah, I'm not too fond of that odd bell sound. I'm always surprised when I see people stating that the radio static was scarier in 1 than 2, especially given the three progressively-scarier stages the radio has in 2.
Loved your take on this mate, still have me original copy on PS1 with the 'WARNING: This game is not recommended for those with heart problems or the elderly' sticker on the front case, your title's spot on too as the original Silent Hill on PS1 is absolutely 'timeless' and IMO still 1 of the best games on the console! :)

I think movie adaptation is fairly good. I mean more specifically comparing to other game based movies. But absolutely,the lore should've been focused more. Though then again nitpicking about having possibly hours of plot compacted to couple hours might not work either.
Yea my exact opinion, I even would say its the best "Video Game Movie Adaption" (perhabs with the WoW Movie) but just that... there are a lot worse Video Game Movies in comparison. But as just a "Horror" Movie there are a lot better ones :)

I think everyone can agree that there's plethora of horror movies that are worse than Silent Hill. Thinking about overall quality of horror movies, I'd say it's well above average. After all, there's a lot of absolutely horrible horror movies that fail on every possible level :)
It comes to show just how well-made this game is that I can still go back and play it today.
I've always been more of a Fatal Frame guy, and PS1 games RARELY get with me, due to weird controls, goofy graphics, etc., but I can always go back to this one.
No nostalgia attached, no history with the PS1, just me, this game, and a good time.
