  • It's hard to believe, but we have put 50,000 miles on our 2021 Tesla Model Y! So what do we think after two and a half years and all those miles, including about 30,000 miles of road trips?! We review software updates, tires, sleeping in the Model Y, the supercharger experience, charging at home, cost of gas vs charging, cost of maintenance and service, and more! What's the verdict after 50,000 miles?

    • @MegaWilderness

      How many sets of tyres have you been through? Is the battery original? Is the suspension original?

    • @zerix01
      @zerix01 ปีที่แล้ว +3

      @@MegaWilderness I don't have the tire info on hand. I know when I was sticking to the OEM Michelin Primacy tires they only got me maybe 20k miles. Possibly less. Once I switched to a better all season Continental, they have been lasting for over 30k miles and I have been bad at rotating them these last six months. The tread is starting to look questionable.
      The battery is original. I use Scan My Tesla to monitor various stats. My estimate is I have about 10% degradation. 85% of my charging is on Super chargers because I don't have a driveway at the house. On good weather days, I charge from one of my outside 120v outlets, slowly... Lol But anyway I do abuse it more than you should.
      The suspension is original. I have had the control arms replaced once in 2021 because they were squeaking. Apparently this is a known issue and I have another appointment tomorrow for the same thing. However, since this is known, they have redesigned them and hopefully this will be the last time I need to do this. Also they are providing the fix at cost of parts ($192.79) plus tax. This is nice since labor I think would have been around $300. I didn't need to say anything either, the estimate very quickly came back with the reduced price.
      Other stuff I've needed. In early 2019 I had mobile service replace two rear lights filling with water. Easy and fast. I had my 12v battery finally go this last January. Mobile service tried to replace it and found my frunk latch wouldn't open. They quickly got me into the service center and got that and the battery handled in an afternoon.
      Also in 2019 the driver's side seat heater would not always work. It took three visits before they figured out a cable harness was pulling too much and causing a bad connection. During one visit they also updated me to AP HW3, but the seat still didn't work and AP kept crashing (the software only lol). On the next visit they found the harness and fixed both finally!
      And last in 2021 one of the vent motors for controlling where the air flows broke and was stuck in one position. This wasn't too expensive but it took them a whole weekend to do. I don't think that breaks for many people and they weren't used to it. I got a Model X loaner for that.

  • @johnross6314
    @johnross6314 ปีที่แล้ว +14

    Personally, I find running my MY P in chill mode helps save tires. Chill mode still leaps faster than most ICE. But, better on tires. :) Also, it handles so well, it is easy to go around corners, roundabouts at go cart enthusiasm. That also hurts tire wear. It is so smooth and capable, even close within speed limits, to drive sporty.
    It is the best overall vehicle ever owned. Have owned many many.

    I just crossed 30,000 miles on my '22 MYP (had it less than a year) and have traveled from Vermont to California. Michelin tires still have good tread and I have a heavy foot. I can't believe in any other car, I'd have done 10 oil changes and other maintenance. Wild. Will never go back.

    I wish you'd spent a little less time repeating over and over again that the car accelerates and handles well, is spacious and economical to operate and instead used the time to cover things in a little more depth. For a car review, you're a little short on details. How has the battery held up? How is the road noise (when you're not driving on South Carolina roads)? How is the upholstery holding up? How is the sound system? Seat comfort? Headlight coverage? Do you miss the lack of physical controls?
    I like that you mentioned what appears to be the car's one big drawback: It goes through tires quickly.
    Have you considered taking the time to make some point-form notes on what you would like to cover instead of rambling for 20 minutes? What would you tell your son if he stood up in front of his class and gave a presentation like this?
    Your videos contain good information and are well lit and miked, always sharp and in focus, and you have interesting, worthwhile ideas. I might subscribe if you worked on organizing your delivery and cut down on the repetition.

    My vehicle now comes with HW4 and the better quality cameras. I did allot of research on many EV's, which would fit my needs, and the model Y hatchback style was the best. I only have the basic Auto Pilot which haven't had a chance to try it yet.
    I am retired and only do my driving around town or short single charge trips. I do my charging in my home garage with plugging into a 220 volt outlet. I have the factory tires (Continentals), so I will see how long they last with my driving style. Living in Northern Illinois, I will see how the Model Y AWD does in the snowy roads.

      @@manueldavid7369 Thats amazing.. I thought governments and lying food industry had their money making scam working in every country... they'l get to yours soon! I live in Canada and one day I saw a "heart healthy" endorsement from the Heart and Stoke Foundation on a package of sugary gummy bears. Anyone can be bought, the publicly funded groups that are there to look out for your best interest are easily bought and dont give a crap about lying and marching you to an early death as long as they get money for it.

      @@user-io8bm6gz5z That's why I believe in DIRECT DEMOCRACY. Democracy alone is not enough, only DIRECT Democracy works. As that gives people the chance to vote on actual decisions every three months, instead of voting people into the government that then just have to be trusted for years. And new laws and law changes can always be proposed spontaneously by every individual, as long as you get 50k signatures on it. Any such law proposal is then voted upon by any citizen that wants to, every three months. It is upscalable to countries the size of China as much as it works for a tiny one like Monaco. All that's needed is offer education for free, that your population maintains a high level of knowledge and understanding. And suddenly life becomes free and easy. Only in this way THE PEOPLE RULE the government, and the government rules the companies/industries. Not the other way around. It is the only system which works and is almost impossible to corrupt. Move to the german speaking part of Switzerland for a few years to check it out. People who come never want to leave anymore. It makes sense.

    Wow 4.7 cents / Kw. I pay 20 cents / Kw in low season, and charge only at home. No road trips yet though. Fortunately, I have solar panels and that energy is Free! Especially since the solar system has paid for itself already. If anything, I would like to double my solar panel output with an upgrade. But, I notice that the electric charge itself isn’t the problem. It’s the customer charge, energy surcharges, taxes and line after line of extra fees the City heaps on the Utility bill. Oh, and California wants to add a 4 or 6 cent per mile charge because they think EVs will be eating into their gas tax revenues! They haven’t passed that into law yet, but it’s probably just a matter of time.
