Good NZ morning Maya and Aladino. First of all...I am subscribed to "Free Range Sailing." And as a 70+ guy, I can identify with the free range/self sufficiency that we practiced in the 60's and 70's and still do. So when you alluded to it...I thought fantastic. Looking forward to that next chapter. You see I view "Magic Carpet" as your/our ride to each new adventure. Whether it's rivers, canals, open ocean, up in a boatyard for general maintenance, or reviewing each day. Each new day/adventure has a story to go with it. And for anybody to offer up a negative comment is unfortunate. And I feel that the author of those comments has lost the point of your videos. So MC ignore the negatives, and focus on the positives. I am enjoying ALL the aspects of your adventures. Incidentally my last boat i owned was called "Storyteller." A 38ft Hartley Golden Cowrie in ferrocement, flush decker. Thank you for sharing your life with us. The current pandemic is hard to handle living "normally" in a house so I can only imagine what it must be on a boat. Once your river boat is back to a sail boat you will return to what you realy enjoy. Wish you luck with your plans.

Thanks for the nice sentiment Guy. Although the comments we receive are REALLY nice and I really do appreciate them, you have to understand the words from strangers on a screen are not a solid foundation to base mental health on. There's SO much that happens off screen. The little TH-cam app on my phone isn't my world -- and nor would I want it to be. I didn't share this video to get advice on how I should feel, but rather to share the reality that long-term travelling on a boat can be filled with a lot of ups and downs. Everyone who I've ever met that has spent extended periods living and travelling on a boat already knows this, but I want to share it for everyone at home who thinks this lifestyle is a magical-cure-all to all their problems. It's not. The highs are higher, but the lows are lower -- like your entire home being slammed around out of control in a huge concrete lock. That's what I wanted to convey through this video.
I would like to echo "Guy Machiels" comments. May the wonderful crew of Magic Carpet continue to sweep us (viewers) along on their adventures as long as they are able and inspired.

Gooi Dag from a Dutch Australian to a Dutch Canadian. Memories of working on those Rhine River barges as a twenty year old just arrived in Holland in 1972/73 come flooding back as I watch this channel. Suddenly being thrown into the deep end of working those barges, of which I had absolutely no idea about, certainly changed my life. I remember at our first lock on the Neckar River I snapped our thickest 40cm cable which made it a very stressful situation inside a huge lock etc. Fortunately the Dutch skipper (who, even though he has passed on, I admire to this day) taught me how to deal with the next lock and many others. Eventually it became so easy and wonderful sailing in and out of these many locks, particularly on the Moselle, Main and Neckar Rivers. On another note I too felt as an artist when I travelled around the world in 1988-90 in my 1969 VW campervan from Alaska to Tierra del Fuego and all over Europe. If you want stress try dealing with coming back to your beloved boat which has taken you on so many adventures and finding that it is not there. It has been stolen and now you need to deal with the stress of what just happened! That all happened to me when, while I was walking in the early evening light around the historic streets of Seville Spain, I came back to find my completely rebuilt home on wheels stolen! These are life path changing ordeals that have to be reckoned with and of course dealt with. As a result, for example, I have not revisited Holland (and its gezelligheid) since then which is a huge pity. So enjoy Holland to the fullest and as I tell my family there, eet maar een lekkere verse zoute haring voor mij haha!
Free range is one of my favourite channel. Maya, you may get inspired by Uma sailing around the North Atlantic. Mast up and further North.. Love your music. Lov you 2. Keep true to yourself.

You might experience similar in the Netherlands. If you have floating bollards you can tie up to stabilise. It is recommended to make fast after the water level is reached to avoid being thrown around by the big boys, then wait till they are far enough away before following.
Enjoying the video's....When you get to the Netherlands, the Rhine splits; one arm goes towards Nijmegen (more South and renamed Waal) the other more North towards Arnhem , initially called Nederrijn and later Lek. They both end up in Rotterdam, but the Waal has a stronger current and quite busy traffic (and the little dams protruding into the river) While the Lek is quieter, less current and traffic. One easy lock near Hagestein. Plenty of places to spend the night.

Once you are just passed Arnhem, there is a village called "Oosterbeek". It has a camping with a small harbour which offers a place for passing small boats. If you moor there you can easily walk to the village. I have lived and sailed a big part of my life on that part of the river Rhine.

I just want to say thank you for taking us along on this trip through France and places I've never been to, but dream of seeing one day. I'm 50, and feel that my whole life is actually in front of me, at the least, the best part of it... The joy is indeed in the journey, I've at least learned that much, though, and the journey you've taken us on this summer has been a sweet escape, and a joy for the heart. You are both calm, sweet, and gentle, and I wish you well on all your travels together. You are a lovely couple, and I wish you happiness. Jai!
Maya/Alidino, I love your videos & the music you put to the videos. I can understand how you feel you are just a bystander & not really putting much effort into the sailing aspect of it, almost like you are a passive observer & that must be frustrating & kind of sad to you. I can assure you that I never felt as if you were a passive observer, that never came through in your videos at all. I really enjoy your work & it actually is giving me a chance to see what I never saw before, which is the part of germany I would have liked to have seen, but could not. Also, parts of france as well, of which I am of french descent, but probably will never be able to go there. You are doing an outstanding job of narration & videography for which I am grateful. So Thank you Maya & Aladino for taking us w/you on your journey through life, with each other & through all the countries you have sailed through. I will be forever grateful for both of you.
We are all having these moments of stress these days. Agreed that it is a problem when it negativily impacts your objectivity. Glad you are aware of it, recognize the potential issues and are working to handle it better. It is a challenge and a very important quality in a sailor. I'm sure you two will work it out. Meanwhile, I am loving what you are doing. You are definitely headed in the right direction. What you are experiencing are minor course corrections. Big virtual hug to you both!
As always very articulately expressed. You're right though, we're all going through this painful re-invention of our world and freedoms...very few of us happily so good on you for fleshing it out a bit in your own case. You do have a gift for expressing what many feel. In our case we just finished building a camper which we had great plans for but face the impossibility of free travel so we've had to redirect too. We're going back to our other love, sailing. We too love Troy and Pascal on Free Range Sailing...as well as you guys of course.
I have enjoyed your “river cruise”. Its been stressful for you but relaxing for many of us to watch. I look foward to Friday mornings in the USA because another episode of MC appears.

For anyone who is in the same situation in a lock with one ore more commercial ships in front, just ask with your VHF if they can be easy with their engine when leaving. In most instances this works great. It is not that the person in the steering hut wants to harass the little boat on their stern, mostly they either have no idea that their prop wash is a problem or they have not noticed you at all. Beware that most VHF channels used by locks (e.g. 18, 20, 22) are simplex so (unless the lock uses a semi-duplex transmitter, but you usually don't know that) you better use either VHF10 or the local VHF block channel to hail them.
How to predict the behaviour of the big Commercial ships/barges Up stream : ships loaded, they usually take the deep part of the river, but evenso trying to avoid the current as much as possible. Ships unloaded, they usually try to avoid the current as much as possible having the possibility to sail beside the deepest part of the river Down stream: Both loaded and unloaded ships try to be in the highest current as much as possible. Tip: when the ships are out of sight, by looking on your AIS you can see the speed of the ships, slow ships are loaded, faster ships are unloaded. So now you can predict the side of the river they most likely will take and you can adapt in an early stage. If you are in doubt which side to pass , ask them on the VHF. They will appreciate that you ask them for their advice. Those skippers are really professionals!. Last but not least sport boats have to stay us much as possible on the utmost right side of the waterway.
Hearing the talk about branchment reminded me of a swiss family of three using my phone while I was repairing their car.They were phoning their doctor and discussing "medicment"for their 3 or 4 year old boy. Must be something to do with language in Switzerland. CHEERS from southern Vancouver Island.

The Magic Carpet - Aladino and Maya stories/videos are or such high quality that I feel transported as if I am "on deck" with them through their trials and adventures. That is a genuine gift that Maya and Aladino share with us.

Once upon a time long long ago I had a chance to buy a 35ft ketch in Scotland. I didn't have the money so it didn't work out. The interesting thing is it was twin screw. The owner wanted to make the same trip as Magic Carpet. He was worried that his engine would quit when he needed it the most so he had the boat built with twin engines. He also had the masts set up so he could lower it without out a crane.
Makes me envious of the trip. Although going downriver on idle (sort of) would almost be like going through the Rockies with the car on neutral downhill. 👍🙂
That is how this started, but it’s grown to be way beyond that. Which is a good thing! Production quality and story telling were way less when it was just friends and fam. But the bigger audience does come with some more responsibility.
I now know why I felt a connection with Maya when first experiencing a Magic Carpet film stories. We share - which I often suspected - a common Dutch ancestral heritage. We're Hollanders; both our families migrated to N. America. Dutch immigrants living in Canada and USA inevitably share certain cultural markers. And, we still have ties to Holland and Dutch relatives in the Netherlands. This is yet another instance proving that cultural identity is very often marked not only by language used, but by how it's used, meaning syntax, phrasing, expressions, gestures and colloquial expressions. After migrating, my parent's families ended up in the Great Lakes region. I think Maya's family settled in coastal B.C. Canada not too far from the USA/Canada border. Yet there are many similarities in how we speak English. I may be weird (and, I'm a retired teacher = proof of weirdness?) but I find that intriguing.
Another super video. Your anxiety in the final lock, so eloquently described, was quite tangible but you met the challenge, and continue on your fascinating voyage 'North through the Continent' with your characteristic good humour. You mentioned in your commentary Maya, that you are excited by the prospect of arriving in Amsterdam in your own Boat: I'm intrigued as to whether you will take the Staande Mast Route through The Netherlands, or the Offshore Sea Route when you are able. Continued inspiration to both of you in your different ways.
Ahoi! Interesting footage, and I feel almost home (it's @Rheinkilometer 692,5). /methinks that you did very well, and traffic didn't look that dense. I can imagine what kind of inferno those two barges created in the lock - they probably did not know that you were behind them. 20:58, the biggest problem would be a third barge steaming down in the middle ;)

I have been watching your journey from the very beginning. Maya's storytelling is so enthralling and vivid that I often feel like that I have been travelling vicariously through your videos and narration. I have recently discovered another sailing channel called Sailing Uma about another fellow Canadian ( from British Columbia) and his Haitian partner who bought a derelict sailboat and rebuilt it over time while travelling. Sound familiar? Both Sailing Magic Carpet and Sailing Uma are my favourite TH-cam channels. Although similar but also very different they both inspire and educate viewers on the beauty of our tiny planet. Maya you should be proud about what you and Aladino have achieved. Bye the way, the crew of Uma have just recently left the Netherlands and are currently in Norway. I have mused about how wonderful it would be if the crews of my two favourite sailing channels would meet up sometine in the future. Here is to fair winds and calm seas.

That sounds like a compliment to the Dutch, dear. 3 months later will only turn the Netherlands a bit colder and more colourfull. Please go and take your time. About the stress, it is a stressful time for most of us. Life will change and it will be very different for you two I guess. If you've to keep up a tensed body 8 hours or more you will feel exhausted afterward. The Rhein/Rijn is not an easy river, for all the commercial traffic. and Basf isn't welcoming too. Worms has this massive old cathedral and on the way more will come to enjoy. Make music to wind down, it will help you.
Good videos..... about the current and prop-wash in the locks.... its because you have a keel, and that is that the wash catches. Also when you "rope up" in the locks..... why not just tie it on the front with some rope.... then keep the engine in idle reverse....and let the boat do its thing.... just a thought. Again... good videos! It has inspired me 🙂
The pandemic has brought the luxury of time for introspection.....stress is a natural reaction to the pandemic....but your introspection is a luxury.....we overindulge it at our peril.......more sustainable adventure will come your way for sure.....buen viaje
I think that introspection, which is the practice of using our own minds to make sense of our world, is a basic human instinct - far from a luxury. Perhaps structures have been but in place which prevent us from taking that time as often as we should, but I think it's really healthy and productive. "Bottling up" emotions never got anyone anywhere.

Guys, just an idea for securing the boat in a lock: there is the mooring technique parallele to a dock when we use only one line from a cleat midship to the parallel pontoon, than we keep the engine in forward till the boat pulls itself to the pontoon - than we keep the prop running at low rpm and lock the steering in a position that it forces the aft against the pontoon. When the water level is stabilized in the lock, is it possible to turn the engine on and force the boat agains the wall using one rope from midship, the rudder and the engine? It is a quite stable position for the boat...
Hey Magic Carpet 😃 This is finally exactly my stretch of the River Rhine 😎 You will find me 🛥 somewhere between Strassbourg and Worms on almost every summer weekend 👍 This episode confused me sometimes 🤪Because in the final cut, you were jumping back and forth a lot. One scene is the „Wassersport verboten“ anchorage, that actually is located near Rastatt on the french side. Minutes later you are passing Speyer, which is at least 80km further down the river 😇 So sad, that i never saw you somewhere. I would have loved to say hello 🙂 These stone walls, that narrow the river, are called „Buhnen“ in german. They have been built to slow down the current. You really have to have an eye on the charts! At low water level, you can see them. At higher water level, they are completely submerged and can be really dangerous to unlucky boaters. Good luck, Maya and Dino 🦖
In german waters the blue sign (or the blue light at night) that the cargo ships show, only applies to large ships and is not to be followed by pleasure craft up to 20 meters in length. But it obliges you to pay more attention.
That's true, however if a big ship is coming up the other side of the river towards you, you still have to avoid them. If there's room to pass on either side that's great, but sometimes there's not.
These days I guess most of us are treading water and life plans are very much on hold. As we grow and develop we also change and adapt to our life experiences. Sometime we feel we are not getting anywhere or even going backwards, but who would have know 12 months ago what was to become us all? Though we see just a glimpse of your lives a reality check has hit us all, maybe you are weathering the pandemic storm better than most, your vista changes daily, your roots are on the boat, though a slow progression through Europe seems like there is no objective, you are riding the storm in a different way, and these major events shape all our lives for the future in different ways. Documenting your life and adventures is a treasure that you may not fully understand until many years later, though then you will realize you have learned and grown much without knowing it at the time. Its a big wide world but there is no rush adventure is around every corner, if you have each other that is the biggest support and reward your ever need. Life is the journey not the destination as that always changes... fair winds and following seas.

We bought an 1980 Quest 8 meter sloop a few months ago and I'm doing a refit here in Bribie Island Australia. I'm an Aussie and my wife is American. Good NZ morning Maya and Aladino. First of all...I am subscribed to "Free Range Sailing." And as a 70+ guy, I can identify with the free range/self sufficiency that we practiced in the 60's and 70's and still do. So when you alluded to it...I thought fantastic. Looking forward to that next chapter. You see I view "Magic Carpet" as your/our ride to each new adventure. Whether it's rivers, canals, open ocean, up in a boatyard for general maintenance, or reviewing each day. Each new day/adventure has a story to go with it. And for anybody to offer up a negative comment is unfortunate. And I feel that the author of those comments has lost the point of your videos. So MC ignore the negatives, and focus on the positives. I am enjoying ALL the aspects of your adventures. Incidentally my last boat i owned was called "Storyteller." A 38ft Hartley Golden Cowrie in ferrocement, flush decker. Thank you for sharing your life with us. The current pandemic is hard to handle living "normally" in a house so I can only imagine what it must be on a boat. Once your river boat is back to a sail boat you will return to what you realy enjoy. Wish you luck with your plans.

When i see the few seconds of your opening theme (from 1:06) where you see the MC floating through the canal with beautiful green trees hanging overhead accompanied with the soft music, it feels like you are sailing though heaven. Thanks for the nice sentiment Guy. Although the comments we receive are REALLY nice and I really do appreciate them, you have to understand the words from strangers on a screen are not a solid foundation to base mental health on. There's SO much that happens off screen. The little TH-cam app on my phone isn't my world -- and nor would I want it to be. I didn't share this video to get advice on how I should feel, but rather to share the reality that long-term travelling on a boat can be filled with a lot of ups and downs. Everyone who I've ever met that has spent extended periods living and travelling on a boat already knows this, but I want to share it for everyone at home who thinks this lifestyle is a magical-cure-all to all their problems. It's not. The highs are higher, but the lows are lower -- like your entire home being slammed around out of control in a huge concrete lock. That's what I wanted to convey through this video.
I would like to echo "Guy Machiels" comments. May the wonderful crew of Magic Carpet continue to sweep us (viewers) along on their adventures as long as they are able and inspired.

Gooi Dag from a Dutch Australian to a Dutch Canadian. Memories of working on those Rhine River barges as a twenty year old just arrived in Holland in 1972/73 come flooding back as I watch this channel. Suddenly being thrown into the deep end of working those barges, of which I had absolutely no idea about, certainly changed my life. I remember at our first lock on the Neckar River I snapped our thickest 40cm cable which made it a very stressful situation inside a huge lock etc. Fortunately the Dutch skipper (who, even though he has passed on, I admire to this day) taught me how to deal with the next lock and many others. Eventually it became so easy and wonderful sailing in and out of these many locks, particularly on the Moselle, Main and Neckar Rivers. On another note I too felt as an artist when I travelled around the world in 1988-90 in my 1969 VW campervan from Alaska to Tierra del Fuego and all over Europe. If you want stress try dealing with coming back to your beloved boat which has taken you on so many adventures and finding that it is not there. It has been stolen and now you need to deal with the stress of what just happened! That all happened to me when, while I was walking in the early evening light around the historic streets of Seville Spain, I came back to find my completely rebuilt home on wheels stolen! These are life path changing ordeals that have to be reckoned with and of course dealt with. As a result, for example, I have not revisited Holland (and its gezelligheid) since then which is a huge pity. So enjoy Holland to the fullest and as I tell my family there, eet maar een lekkere verse zoute haring voor mij haha!

You might experience similar in the Netherlands. If you have floating bollards you can tie up to stabilise. It is recommended to make fast after the water level is reached to avoid being thrown around by the big boys, then wait till they are far enough away before following.
Enjoying the video's....When you get to the Netherlands, the Rhine splits; one arm goes towards Nijmegen (more South and renamed Waal) the other more North towards Arnhem , initially called Nederrijn and later Lek. They both end up in Rotterdam, but the Waal has a stronger current and quite busy traffic (and the little dams protruding into the river) While the Lek is quieter, less current and traffic. One easy lock near Hagestein. Plenty of places to spend the night.

Once you are just passed Arnhem, there is a village called "Oosterbeek". It has a camping with a small harbour which offers a place for passing small boats. If you moor there you can easily walk to the village. I have lived and sailed a big part of my life on that part of the river Rhine.

I can understand how you feel you are just a bystander & not really putting much effort into the sailing aspect of it, almost like you are a passive observer & that must be frustrating & kind of sad to you. I can assure you that I never felt as if you were a passive observer, that never came through in your videos at all. I really enjoy your work & it actually is giving me a chance to see what I never saw before, which is the part of germany I would have liked to have seen, but could not. Also, parts of france as well, of which I am of french descent, but probably will never be able to go there. You are doing an outstanding job of narration & videography for which I am grateful. So Thank you Maya & Aladino for taking us w/you on your journey through life, with each other & through all the countries you have sailed through. I will be forever grateful for both of you.

We are all having these moments of stress these days. Agreed that it is a problem when it negativily impacts your objectivity. Glad you are aware of it, recognize the potential issues and are working to handle it better. It is a challenge and a very important quality in a sailor. I'm sure you two will work it out. As always very articulately expressed. You're right though, we're all going through this painful re-invention of our world and freedoms...very few of us happily so good on you for fleshing it out a bit in your own case. You do have a gift for expressing what many feel. In our case we just finished building a camper which we had great plans for but face the impossibility of free travel so we've had to redirect too. We're going back to our other love, sailing. We too love Troy and Pascal on Free Range Sailing...as well as you guys of course.
I have enjoyed your “river cruise”. Its been stressful for you but relaxing for many of us to watch. I look foward to Friday mornings in the USA because another episode of MC appears.

For anyone who is in the same situation in a lock with one ore more commercial ships in front, just ask with your VHF if they can be easy with their engine when leaving. In most instances this works great. It is not that the person in the steering hut wants to harass the little boat on their stern, mostly they either have no idea that their prop wash is a problem or they have not noticed you at all. Beware that most VHF channels used by locks (e.g. 18, 20, 22) are simplex so (unless the lock uses a semi-duplex transmitter, but you usually don't know that) you better use either VHF10 or the local VHF block channel to hail them.

How to predict the behaviour of the big Commercial ships/barges
Up stream :
ships loaded, they usually take the deep part of the river, but evenso trying to avoid the current as much as possible.
Ships unloaded, they usually try to avoid the current as much as possible having the possibility to sail beside the deepest part of the river
Down stream:
Both loaded and unloaded ships try to be in the highest current as much as possible.
Tip: when the ships are out of sight, by looking on your AIS you can see the speed of the ships, slow ships are loaded, faster ships are unloaded. So now you can predict the side of the river they most likely will take and you can adapt in an early stage. If you are in doubt which side to pass , ask them on the VHF. They will appreciate that you ask them for their advice. Those skippers are really professionals!. Last but not least sport boats have to stay us much as possible on the utmost right side of the waterway.

Hearing the talk about branchment reminded me of a swiss family of three using my phone while I was repairing their car.They were phoning their doctor and discussing "medicment"for their 3 or 4 year old boy. In 2006 I cycle camped down the Rhein from Basel all the way to Rotterdam also did a detour up and down the Mosel at Koblenz. Fantastic trip 🚴♂️

I dont know anything about boats, but I was surprised by the speed of the huge barges compared to magic carpet. They must be very powerful.

Once upon a time long long ago I had a chance to buy a 35ft ketch in Scotland. I didn't have the money so it didn't work out. The interesting thing is it was twin screw. The owner wanted to make the same trip as Magic Carpet. He was worried that his engine would quit when he needed it the most so he had the boat built with twin engines. He also had the masts set up so he could lower it without out a crane.
Makes me envious of the trip. Although going downriver on idle (sort of) would almost be like going through the Rockies with the car on neutral downhill. 👍🙂

My impression was that you started the videos to keep your family and friends informed as to your activities. My enjoyment was purely a fringe benefit
That is how this started, but it’s grown to be way beyond that. Which is a good thing! Production quality and story telling were way less when it was just friends and fam. But the bigger audience does come with some more responsibility.
I now know why I felt a connection with Maya when first experiencing a Magic Carpet film stories. We share - which I often suspected - a common Dutch ancestral heritage. We're Hollanders; both our families migrated to N. America. Dutch immigrants living in Canada and USA inevitably share certain cultural markers. And, we still have ties to Holland and Dutch relatives in the Netherlands. This is yet another instance proving that cultural identity is very often marked not only by language used, but by how it's used, meaning syntax, phrasing, expressions, gestures and colloquial expressions. After migrating, my parent's families ended up in the Great Lakes region. I think Maya's family settled in coastal B.C. Canada not too far from the USA/Canada border. Yet there are many similarities in how we speak English. I may be weird (and, I'm a retired teacher = proof of weirdness?) but I find that intriguing.
Another super video. Your anxiety in the final lock, so eloquently described, was quite tangible but you met the challenge, and continue on your fascinating voyage 'North through the Continent' with your characteristic good humour. You mentioned in your commentary Maya, that you are excited by the prospect of arriving in Amsterdam in your own Boat: I'm intrigued as to whether you will take the Staande Mast Route through The Netherlands, or the Offshore Sea Route when you are able. Continued inspiration to both of you in your different ways.

I have been watching your journey from the very beginning. Maya's storytelling is so enthralling and vivid that I often feel like that I have been travelling vicariously through your videos and narration. I have recently discovered another sailing channel called Sailing Uma about another fellow Canadian ( from British Columbia) and his Haitian partner who bought a derelict sailboat and rebuilt it over time while travelling. Sound familiar? Both Sailing Magic Carpet and Sailing Uma are my favourite TH-cam channels. Although similar but also very different they both inspire and educate viewers on the beauty of our tiny planet. Maya you should be proud about what you and Aladino have achieved.
Bye the way, the crew of Uma have just recently left the Netherlands and are currently in Norway. I have mused about how wonderful it would be if the crews of my two favourite sailing channels would meet up sometine in the future. Here is to fair winds and calm seas.

Anxiety and excitement induce a very similar feeling in the body they just have different names which can be switched.
That sounds like a compliment to the Dutch, dear. 3 months later will only turn the Netherlands a bit colder and more colourfull. Please go and take your time. About the stress, it is a stressful time for most of us. Life will change and it will be very different for you two I guess. If you've to keep up a tensed body 8 hours or more you will feel exhausted afterward. The Rhein/Rijn is not an easy river, for all the commercial traffic. and Basf isn't welcoming too. Worms has this massive old cathedral and on the way more will come to enjoy. Make music to wind down, it will help you.
Good videos..... about the current and prop-wash in the locks.... its because you have a keel, and that is that the wash catches. Also when you "rope up" in the locks..... why not just tie it on the front with some rope.... then keep the engine in idle reverse....and let the boat do its thing.... just a thought.

I think that introspection, which is the practice of using our own minds to make sense of our world, is a basic human instinct - far from a luxury. Perhaps structures have been but in place which prevent us from taking that time as often as we should, but I think it's really healthy and productive. "Bottling up" emotions never got anyone anywhere.

Guys, just an idea for securing the boat in a lock: there is the mooring technique parallele to a dock when we use only one line from a cleat midship to the parallel pontoon, than we keep the engine in forward till the boat pulls itself to the pontoon - than we keep the prop running at low rpm and lock the steering in a position that it forces the aft against the pontoon. When the water level is stabilized in the lock, is it possible to turn the engine on and force the boat agains the wall using one rope from midship, the rudder and the engine? It is a quite stable position for the boat...

One scene is the „Wassersport verboten“ anchorage, that actually is located near Rastatt on the french side.
Minutes later you are passing Speyer, which is at least 80km further down the river 😇
So sad, that i never saw you somewhere. I would have loved to say hello 🙂
These stone walls, that narrow the river, are called „Buhnen“ in german. They have been built to slow down the current.
You really have to have an eye on the charts!
At low water level, you can see them. At higher water level, they are completely submerged and can be really dangerous to unlucky boaters.

In german waters the blue sign (or the blue light at night) that the cargo ships show, only applies to large ships and is not to be followed by pleasure craft up to 20 meters in length. But it obliges you to pay more attention.
That's true, however if a big ship is coming up the other side of the river towards you, you still have to avoid them. If there's room to pass on either side that's great, but sometimes there's not.

These days I guess most of us are treading water and life plans are very much on hold. As we grow and develop we also change and adapt to our life experiences. Sometime we feel we are not getting anywhere or even going backwards, but who would have know 12 months ago what was to become us all? Though we see just a glimpse of your lives a reality check has hit us all, maybe you are weathering the pandemic storm better than most, your vista changes daily, your roots are on the boat, though a slow progression through Europe seems like there is no objective, you are riding the storm in a different way, and these major events shape all our lives for the future in different ways. Documenting your life and adventures is a treasure that you may not fully understand until many years later, though then you will realize you have learned and grown much without knowing it at the time. Its a big wide world but there is no rush adventure is around every corner, if you have each other that is the biggest support and reward your ever need. Life is the journey not the destination as that always changes... fair winds and following seas.
