I have severe hearing loss and now working with cochlear implants which help a lot, but Maya, OMG I have to tell you that you have the clearest speech of almost anyone I have ever heard, you enunciate your words so well, it is an absolute pleasure to listen to you speak. So many people mumble or speak too quickly, you my dear are clear and concise, and I’m sure there are many people out there that notice it and appreciate it as much as I do. I'm a 83 year old Swede, and I appreciate every form of sound this wonderful woman Maya produces, speech as well as music! I long for the violin, but a violin on board a small sailing vessel perhaps becomes affected by the humidity?
Nice vlog, again well done. The split of ships is done in the middle doe to draft and current. It could be the case one barge had class one or class two explosive/ hazardous goods onboard. These dangerous goods may not dock to others ships or near harbour or loading stations. Splitsing barges is obviously a job that needs total control. In the middle of the river the anchor barges will stay where they must. Going to the side they may started turning. Leaving current in the river is always done in a 180 if you can.

I noticed that there is something special when she folded. The letter a bit lower the exact to half. I guess it is a method of folding letters to be send without putting them into an envelope

Mosel river is very beautiful, with wineyards and nice villages ! Barge traffic it is still the 2nd most important after the Rhine in Germany, but as there are locks along the way you will basically get 170 m in length of barges (either in one pice, either two smaller ones) every hour in each direction, roughly. Moreover, many locks are double : one big 170 x 12 m lock for barges and one 18 x 3,20 m automatic lock for leisure boats (open April-October) so you avoid the stress of getting locked together with 3000 t barges :-)

The locals were correct, the River Mosel is both beautiful and peaceful. Lived near it for 3 years in the early 1980's and couldn't get enough of it. Put it on your list for the next time you travel through Germany. Love the videos. Keep up the great work and stay safe......
I was in Germany about 30 years ago on business. No matter what town or city you go to you will experience the best beer in Germany according to the locals and the beer just happens to be brewed right here in this very town. How fortunate you are.

Separation of barges. It sounds like they are going to two addresses, another tow boat is coming to pick up the ones left. There must be a port or other waterway nearby. They stopped the traffic because it is turning, and in that maneuver it needs the entire width of the river.
Ah, the chocolate museum! A great place to visit in a fascinating city. "Just reverse all the way," lol. Advice from the dock is often worth the price you pay for it.
Your neighbors in Koblenz were right about the Mosel...it would have been such a nice contrast to the Rhein, but now you can save this for another day! Really enjoying your travels and your observations. What will you do once the sails are up again? Do you have a destination in mind?

I stayed in the Koblenz fortress youth hostel back in 1994 before the gondola over the river. The only way to the top was a very steep road you could walk up or pay a couple of Deutschmarks to take the old style open ski lift built for two up. It was during Euro Cup and it was a very fun and amazing place. Would liked to have stayed longer.
I loved the early videos through the French locks and seeing the countryside but your videos are all entertaining and escape for me during our lockdown.
If you get to the Netherlands the Biesbos and Zeeland area are really nice. Zeeland also for sailing. I used to do a lot of windsurfing there. If you like to go more inland, the Friesland area is nice as well and the IJsselmeer is great for sailing. You could go up to the Afsluitdijk and go into salt water and visit some of the islands or 'park' your boat on the Wadden sandbank plains when the tide is low.
Awesome video as usual guys. Went down the mosel in 2000 after a week at expo 2000 in Hanover. It was the best trip ever. Zell is my dream town and like your friends said it is so relaxed and scenic that I'll never forget every moment. Thank you for the trip north through the continent!! I enjoyed it as if i was there.

Your travels are sooo beautiful and you both are so peaceful people, that I think you should buy a big boat and offer a few days tours trough some rivers. You'll find that you'll get lots of clients!
Welcome home - what about going north (north on the continent) Norway have a fantastic coast, even winter boating is cool. (look at You Tube). Reaching the Norwegian coast you have many more challenges than the rivers, but there is people giving you advice at every harbor. What about Stavanger - Tromsø - Svalbard. If the oktober is cold where you are - it is the same here in Trondheim, middle of Norway. We are sailing/motoring all the year.

The barge situation on the Rhine might be related to a drop in the water level of the river which has affected how much they can carry and the cost, it might be that to continue forward the barge group had to split and the units with no engines would be towed by the other boat you saw, of course, while all that was being organised it would be quite dangerous for other traffic to pass. I have great memories of Koln, a great and sadly departed friend Klaus Doll came from there and we had many many hours making music together, they were wonderful times.
You missed not only the Mosel, but also the Lahn! Going up to Limburg would have been an amazing experience for you! And no commercial ships. Obviously, you have a lot of German followers. ;-)

Dini, I wish I could have seen film of your stud style boat handling docking maneuver. But it's best to focus all attention piloting Magic Carpet not on getting dramatic footage.
Maya, I love that your prepositions are 'slipping'. Mine did the same thing after a year in Japan, and my Canadian accent is still touched by my time in the UK.
How wonderful to cruise the Rhine, I love all of the castles, fortresses and all of their legends. I went on a touring cruise many years back but to do it at my own speed would be amazing. Yes your boat struggled, much like a Smart Car on the Highway on a windy day and yes the Rhine has constant commerce, but it is what it is. It's the Mississippi River of Europe but wider so that helps. Having a larger more powerful motor boat would have made it more enjoyable since you're not battling the current and wake of other boats as much, but hey...it's an adventure ya? And lots of good content :-)

I forgot the motor didn't have reverse... definitely makes it harder for maneuvering and tight River spaces! It looks like there's some cool old boats in Cologne :) also, good to hear that you can become a patron for as little as $2 a month... I will certainly do that soon when things ease up for me a bit! 💕🤙
Cologne is one of the larger suburbs of Düsseldorf and sort of interesting with some primitive charm but better to see Düsseldorf and enjoy the real culture of the Altstadt. As they say in Germany, „there is more fun at a Düsseldorf funeral than there is at a Cologne wedding“.

May I give you a suggestion ? When you enter the Netherlands follow the river Nederrijn and Lek insted the Waal and Merwede . There is a lot of commercial traffic on the Waal .
Another stunning video, covering my home waters! 5:56 We see the vessel "Rheingold" - a reminiscence of the Nibelung Hort (and a Wagner opera). 14:45 your first glimpse of the bridges of Cologne - natural habitat for yours truly as a pupil, rowing up and down the stream uncounted times... We would cover the section from just above Koblenz (mouth of the Lahn river) to "home" at the lower part of Cologne three times on river trips.
There are only about 5 very big ships with 3 barges and one ship propelling I think. A few ones called “Camaro”. They are the biggest ones on that part of the Rhine. I also have no idea what happened, pretty weird story
Have watched all your vids...really enjoy them...are you planning coming to UK...can I suggest the mighty menia straits. ..stunning scenery...Nelson once said if you sail through here you can sail anywhere...there's a challenge...it's got the swellies....very tricky.....oh and yes you got to sail into Liverpool...liver birds and all that..
Another excellent video! I suggest you practice reversing the boat out in an open area. Every sailboat will steer when reversing once you are actually moving backwards so that there is water moving past the rudder to give you steerage. The stern of the boat will pull sideways when first put into reverse so you plan on that, once the boat has pulled around some and then started to move backwards the rudder will start to have effect, continuing in reverse and getting more water flowing past the rudder and you will see that you can steer very well and can weave around anchored boats, mooring buoys, and anything else while in reverse. I have watched many experienced sailors who say that their boat won't back up but that is because they haven't learned how and practiced. They put the boat in reverse and the stern starts pulling sideways, then they put it into forward and use the rudder and prop wash to push the stern over, then back into reverse and it pulls the stern over again... repeat, repeat, meanwhile any crew is trying to fend off other boats, piles, etc. The captain never gets the boat moving backwards at any speed to have steerage in reverse. Take into account how any wind will push the bow and get some speed, even 1 knot is enough to give you steering in reverse. Please practice reversing and the next tight slip you have to back into will be so easy, even when you have to drop an anchor from the bow and back up a good distance then squeeze between two other boats to moor. That is where we see who knows their boat and who needs to practice. Love your videos, you bring back wonderful memories of my days of cruising so long ago.
@@paulsj9245 The "channeled" wind makes it more difficult to turn around, not more difficult to back up. He's young, he will learn. There is a lot to learn and we are always learning, or should be. Many are convinced something can't be done, until they learn how to do it.
It could be the barges split in a very streamlike part because the motor couldn't make it or stopped. The trouble is that the load can fall off. It happened a few times before so they block the channel/river to prohibit an accident. A load of containers on the floor of the Rhein is a disaster. If ever you going to do this again, take the Moselle. Breathtaking river and surroundings. I so had to laugh, Cologne is famous because of the church, not because of the crane flats XD
In railroad parlance it is called doubling the hill. When a train stalls because it is too heavy to go up a hill they take it apart and park one piece in a siding. Seems to be the case here. The barges being next to each other form a sizable resistance. And before going through faster currents the load will be halved. And parked (anchored) at a place where there is enough space for the passing traffic. Either this is routine and was planned because they calculate the tug's power for the load to be too small or the engine has issues.
@@V100-e5q usually a harbor is there to stall the load, must be panic when they leave them in the middle of the river, and the whole river is closed off. And they do have drunk captains a lot too.
Cologne - called Köln by the locals - was founded as a Roman colony called Colonia. It has a beautiful Graeco-Roman museum at the square with the main basilica/duomo.
Please allow me to correct your typo: It's the Romano-Germanic Museum. The Greeks probably came only in the 20th century for restaurants like Sokrates or Aphrodite ;)

Almost in the Netherlands.. my home country.. excited to see what you're going to show about it. But also which route you are going to take as the rhine splits up right after the German-Dutch border... are you both going to follow the "Waal" the southern arm of the Rhine river... or are you going the North arm...(North..but flowing right through the center of the Netherlands.. and about 20/30km north off/parrallel to the South arm)which is named Rhine.. but later on "Lek".. Its smaller.. with some commercial barges, but less than on the "Waal" ... This arm named Rhine/Lek crosses a canal.. the "Amsterdam - Rhine canal" yes.. the connection between the port of Amsterdam and the Northern arm of the Rhine named "Lek" at the crossing at the town of "Wijk bij Duurstede" and the southern arm named "Waal" at the town of "Tiel". An old employee of the Waterlocks at Wijk bij Duurstede once named the "Lek" the parallel road of the highway "Waal" .. as it should be (smaller and therefore) more relaxing to travel. Anyway... just a free mind message.. Have a safe trip and enjoy your stay.. if not allready done in the Netherlands.

How wonderful to cruise the Rhine, I love all of the castles, fortresses and all of their legends. I went on a touring cruise many years back but to do it at my own speed would be amazing. Yes your boat struggled, much like a Smart Car on the Highway on a windy day and yes the Rhine has constant commerce, but it is what it is. It's the Mississippi River of Europe but wider so that helps. Having a larger more powerful motor boat would have made it more enjoyable since you're not battling the current and wake of other boats as much, but hey...it's an adventure ya? And lots of good content :-)

I forgot the motor didn't have reverse... definitely makes it harder for maneuvering and tight River spaces! It looks like there's some cool old boats in Cologne :) also, good to hear that you can become a patron for as little as $2 a month... I will certainly do that soon when things ease up for me a bit! 💕🤙

Cologne is one of the larger suburbs of Düsseldorf and sort of interesting with some primitive charm but better to see Düsseldorf and enjoy the real culture of the Altstadt. As they say in Germany, „there is more fun at a Düsseldorf funeral than there is at a Cologne wedding“.

May I give you a suggestion ? When you enter the Netherlands follow the river Nederrijn and Lek insted the Waal and Merwede . There is a lot of commercial traffic on the Waal .

We would cover the section from just above Koblenz (mouth of the Lahn river) to "home" at the lower part of Cologne three times on river trips.
There are only about 5 very big ships with 3 barges and one ship propelling I think. A few ones called “Camaro”. They are the biggest ones on that part of the Rhine.

Have watched all your vids...really enjoy them...are you planning coming to UK...can I suggest the mighty menia straits. ..stunning scenery...Nelson once said if you sail through here you can sail anywhere...there's a challenge...it's got the swellies....very tricky.....oh and yes you got to sail into Liverpool...liver birds and all that..

I suggest you practice reversing the boat out in an open area. Every sailboat will steer when reversing once you are actually moving backwards so that there is water moving past the rudder to give you steerage. The stern of the boat will pull sideways when first put into reverse so you plan on that, once the boat has pulled around some and then started to move backwards the rudder will start to have effect, continuing in reverse and getting more water flowing past the rudder and you will see that you can steer very well and can weave around anchored boats, mooring buoys, and anything else while in reverse.
I have watched many experienced sailors who say that their boat won't back up but that is because they haven't learned how and practiced. They put the boat in reverse and the stern starts pulling sideways, then they put it into forward and use the rudder and prop wash to push the stern over, then back into reverse and it pulls the stern over again... repeat, repeat, meanwhile any crew is trying to fend off other boats, piles, etc. The captain never gets the boat moving backwards at any speed to have steerage in reverse.
Take into account how any wind will push the bow and get some speed, even 1 knot is enough to give you steering in reverse. Please practice reversing and the next tight slip you have to back into will be so easy, even when you have to drop an anchor from the bow and back up a good distance then squeeze between two other boats to moor. That is where we see who knows their boat and who needs to practice.

@@paulsj9245 The "channeled" wind makes it more difficult to turn around, not more difficult to back up. He's young, he will learn. There is a lot to learn and we are always learning, or should be. Many are convinced something can't be done, until they learn how to do it.
It could be the barges split in a very streamlike part because the motor couldn't make it or stopped. The trouble is that the load can fall off. It happened a few times before so they block the channel/river to prohibit an accident. A load of containers on the floor of the Rhein is a disaster. If ever you going to do this again, take the Moselle. Breathtaking river and surroundings. I so had to laugh, Cologne is famous because of the church, not because of the crane flats XD
In railroad parlance it is called doubling the hill. When a train stalls because it is too heavy to go up a hill they take it apart and park one piece in a siding. Seems to be the case here. The barges being next to each other form a sizable resistance. And before going through faster currents the load will be halved. And parked (anchored) at a place where there is enough space for the passing traffic. Either this is routine and was planned because they calculate the tug's power for the load to be too small or the engine has issues.
@@V100-e5q usually a harbor is there to stall the load, must be panic when they leave them in the middle of the river, and the whole river is closed off. And they do have drunk captains a lot too.
Cologne is also well known for the Toyota race cars that are built for the 24h or Le Mans, for example ;-)

Cologne - called Köln by the locals - was founded as a Roman colony called Colonia.
It has a beautiful Graeco-Roman museum at the square with the main basilica/duomo.
Please allow me to correct your typo: It's the Romano-Germanic Museum. The Greeks probably came only in the 20th century for restaurants like Sokrates or Aphrodite ;)

The best channel
Almost in the Netherlands.. my home country.. excited to see what you're going to show about it. But also which route you are going to take as the rhine splits up right after the German-Dutch border... are you both going to follow the "Waal" the southern arm of the Rhine river... or are you going the North arm...(North..but flowing right through the center of the Netherlands.. and about 20/30km north off/parrallel to the South arm)which is named Rhine.. but later on "Lek".. Its smaller.. with some commercial barges, but less than on the "Waal" ... This arm named Rhine/Lek crosses a canal.. the "Amsterdam - Rhine canal" yes.. the connection between the port of Amsterdam and the Northern arm of the Rhine named "Lek" at the crossing at the town of "Wijk bij Duurstede" and the southern arm named "Waal" at the town of "Tiel". An old employee of the Waterlocks at Wijk bij Duurstede once named the "Lek" the parallel road of the highway "Waal" .. as it should be (smaller and therefore) more relaxing to travel. Anyway... just a free mind message.. Have a safe trip and enjoy your stay.. if not allready done in the Netherlands.
