That was really informative Van, living here in the UK roughouts are not available so I tend to carve straight from the bandsaw. Being a relative newbie to wood carving my learning and inspiration comes from TH-cam and books by the likes of Mike Shipley, James Miller, Harley Refsal, Harold Enlow etc. Great following your videos 👍
Thanks Van for explaining ... The roughout is what all carving classes use .. so no cheating at all ..Wonderful for those without band saws or limited carving shop availability
@@vankellywoodcarvings I need a bandsaw, can you recommend one? I can’t wait to try out some rough outs. All fun, no work removing waste material. Thanks Van, great video always wondered what the difference was between a rough out and a bandsaw blank. 😀
Good video as usual. Thanks for sharing. I recently ordered 4 Roughouts from you and they are good wood, easy to carve and paint. Just a suggestion…. I’m an experienced carver and had no trouble, but especially for a newer carver…. It would be helpful to send along four finished photos rather than just the front view if you have the time. That way we know what front, both sides, and back should look like when complete. Thanks, Van.
I just started carving and did make my own such as you demostated lots of work your cutout would save anyone and they could get more done ✔️ Thanks for the teaching Sir
I’ve never carved from a rough out, but have saved some time and effort by doing a bandsaw cutout. This still leaves a lot to carve which 4:09 can sometimes be discouraging. A rough out does seem like a good idea. You mentioned cutting the profile first! Does this matter. Thanks for your videos.
Very interesting. When I was a teenager I made a chess set by carving "found wood" (by streams, lakes on farms and so on) into a chess set that was sized to use an 8'x8' "chess board" in the basement. All of the pieces got lost in a fire. Forty some years later (inspired by a trip to the Bily Brothers clock museum) I am thinking about trying to remake them - just for the nostalgia of it. This video is helpful. I think I should get a good set of tools. any suggestions on how to go about selecting the right tools (knives, gouges etc.)
Thank you for explaining this. I have asked several CCA members to to demonstrate this process, but none have. This is a niche you’re on, that separates you from the rest. Do you ever use a clay model?
I have not used clay myself. I know a few folks that have. I am hoping in the future to be able to go and make a video actually showing how the roughout process is done at the duplicator.
Wow, roughouts are a great stress saver. especially for the novice carver. Thank you.
This is really interesting. I've always wondered how the roughouts were made.

For sure! Not everyone has access to a bandsaw or shop area to cut out blanks.

Thanks for some new knowledge, Van, and never knew the process.
Great video! Awesome work shop!

That's very interesting. If someone had a design, what's the ballpark price for a dozen or two rough-outs?
I struggle with cut outs, trouble getting my mind around it. I have done better just carving. I will keep after it
It’s easier on the hands and mess too lol
